QOn the FoodNetwork’s
Cupcake Wars, what happensto the 1,000cupcakes bakedby the loser?JEAN CASEY, Penfield, N.Y.
We got the scoopon what happensafter the dust —er, flour — set-
tles on the weekly dessert dustup, whose third season starts Tuesday.“All the fresh ingredients that are stillusable are kept for the next challenge, while the completed cupcakes left overare delivered to nearby charitable or-ganizations, or given to our hardwork-ing cast and crew,” a Food Network andCooking Channel rep tells us. “The setis a great place to work — especially ifyou have a sweet tooth.” Yum — soundsas if there are no real losers!
QThe things Joan Rivers says onFashion Police are hilarious. Do
celebrities contact her to retaliateor ask for an apology?
Jared Scott Tesler, Rochester, N.Y.
“Very few,” Rivers tells us. “The bigones always know it’s in fun. No one whois making $20 million cares that I didn’tlike her dress.” That does not mean shehasn’t gotten nastygrams (from EdieFalco and Kathy Bates, to name two).
Hollywood is a smalltown, and when Riversand her targets collide,it’s awkward, she says.“We had just done athing on SandraBullock’s bangs, and we ran into her
on a plane on the way home. Youfeel terrible, but my job is to be acritic. That’s why people tune in.”Catch Fashion Police Fridays onE! at 10:30 p.m. ET.
QWho putstogether
Bonnie Bedelia’sBoho chic outfits onNBC showParenthood?
Camille ThompsonSan Ramon, Calif.
That is costume de-signer Diane Crooke, who also has dressedthe stars on Friendsand Crossing Jor-dan. To dress Parenthood matriarch
Camille Braverman as “a morecurrent version of a past
hippie life,” Crooke skipsthe hemp and starts
with skinny blackjeans (“She has greatlegs”), then adds sta-ple tanks from EileenFisher and “flowy,
colorful tops” from Cit-ron and Harari.
Like Camille’sjewelry collec-tion? Buy fromlocal arts andcrafts fairs, asCrooke does.“Bonnie is anartist and apainter in herreal life, soshe wanted tohave thatfeeling influ-enced in herclothes now,”says Crooke,
who keeps acloset busting
with pitch-per-fect clothes for
each character.
Andrew Rannells scored one of a whopping 14Tony nominations for the hit Broadway musical The Book of Mormon by South Park creators MattStone and Trey Parker. Their subversive cartoonwas a staple for Rannells when he was growing upin Omaha. “Who would have thought, watchingSouth Park in high school, those are the guys whowould change my life one day?” See if Rannells, 32,
wins the best-actor Tony Sunday on CBS. . . . Alfre Woodardseems to have spent more time on the road than at home. “I'venever been a suburban type. I like the circus life,” says Woodard,58. But her children, Mavis, 19, and Duncan, 17, (with husbandRoderick Spencer) always came first. “Wherever we were, theybecame kids in that city. Then when they started playingorganized sports, they said, ‘Mom, we don’t want to go toZimbabwe. We have soccer games.’ ” Catch Woodard on TNT’sMemphis Beat, which returns for its second season Tuesday.

MEN LIVE A LOT LONGER than they used to: About40 years ago, average life expectancy was 67years; today it’s almost 76. It’s a definite improve-ment, but men still have work to do when it comesto their health: They tend to smoke and drink
more than women, they see their doctor less often, and they arediagnosed with more cases of cancer and heart disease.
Step One to staying healthy: Get regular checkups andscreenings. Here are more strategies to help prevent or treatthe top threats to men’s health:
Eat more fiber. Two recentstudies suggest that doing somay help decrease your risk ofdeveloping and dying fromheart disease. These findingsadd to the body of evidencethat links fiber-rich diets tolower rates of high blood pres-sure, high cholesterol and obe-sity. The daily recommendedfiber intake is 38 grams formen under 50 and 30grams for men over50. But most mendon’t even come close, averaging about 15grams a day. Some ofthe best sources ofdietary fiberare beansand peas.Others in-clude fruits, vegetables,
whole grains and nuts.Know signs of diabetes.
According to the most recentstatistics, 7 million Americanshave the disease and don’tknow it. That’s because symp-toms often go undetected. Butleft untreated, diabetes candamage your heart, blood ves-sels, nerves, vision and kid-neys, and it can lead to health
complications suchas erectile dysfunc-tion. Diabetes is di-agnosed with a sim-ple blood test. If youare overweight and
age 45 or older, askfor it at your nextcheckup. See your
doctor sooner if any ofthe following signs
seem familiar: frequenturination, unusual thirst,

Keep BMI below 25. Youknow maintaining a healthy
weight can lower your risk ofheart disease and diabetes, butnew research suggests it mayalso help prevent dementia. Sci-entists in Sweden followedmore than 8,500 twins over 30years and found that peoplewho were overweight or obesein middle age had an 80% high-er risk of certain types of de-mentia or Alzheimer’s diseaselater in life compared with peo-ple who have normal body massindex (BMI). Low point: The infamous video from last May thatappears to show Ferguson selling a businessman accessto her former husband, Prince Andrew. Ferguson saysthe press “twisted” and “sensationalized” the story, andwhat she was really doing was offering the man anopportunity “to invest in a start-up company.”Before Oprah’s intervention: She was at rock-
bottom — “a place where you sit bolt-upright on a12-hour flight to Los Angeles with an eye mask on withyour eyes wide open.”Family ties: “We have a good relationship,” Fergu-
son says about her ex, to whom she was married for 10years and with whom she still shares a home. “He is mymost special person I’ve ever met. The best day in mylife was when I went down that aisle. We’re a familyunit, the four of us.” (They have two daughters, Be-atrice, 22, and Eugenie, 21.)The newest royal couple: “She’s learned about life
in the royal family,” she says of Prince William’s bride,Catherine. “Diana and I [each] met and married veryquickly. I hope and pray the mistakes we made can helpWilliam and Catherine with their future. Diana wouldbe so proud.”Her princesses: “They both looked utterly beautiful,
and to be called ‘the ugly sisters’ is outrageous,” saysFerguson, referring to the drumming her daughters gotin the press for their royal-wedding attire. “It’s onething to have a go at me, but keep away from youngpeople who are trying their best in a very, very difficultenvironment.”The queen of England: “One of the greatest ladies
I’ve ever met in my life is my mother-in-law, and I’mjust very lucky to even be able to say that,” she says. “Ilove her.” 6

Finally, we're over weeklongcasual Fridays!
Spring's three-piece suitsand sleeveless sweaters echo sar-torially smooth '30s star Clark Ga-ble and TV'sBoardwalk Em-pire. But dress-ing up is not justfor old guys.Teen idol JustinBieber and twen-tysomethingrocker Bruno Mars also play itclose to the vest.
What draws today's dashingdandies to vests are price — lessthan sport coats or Savile Rowsuits — with greater panachethan pullovers.
“Vests are hip, young and ver-satile,” says Perry Ellis creativedirector John Crocco. “They sellbetter than matching slacks andjackets. So clearly, guys wearthem other ways.”
J. Crew pairs vests with loos-ened skinny ties, rolled-upsleeves and jeans.
No shirt is required for PerryEllis argyle cotton sweaters and
even Emporio Ar-mani's neck-highwaistcoats for fall.
You also can loosenyour collar or com-pletely unfasten avest over a T-shirt —just not at work.
“But casual doesn't mean un-tucked shirttails,” Crocco says;nor should ties hang farther thanpartly buttoned vests. “That'ssloppy.”
Otherwise, Crocco says, “Any-thing works if you wear it withconfidence.” 6
