Minister’s letter Dear Friends, In recent years there has been much discussion in all denominations about the importance of house groups in the life of the church. Recent research has revealed that virtually all churches that are growing have house groups. Of course such groups are not a new idea. John Wesley considered small groups to be an essential part of the life of the church. Methodism was born in small groups. In the early years of Wesley’s mission he established small groups that met together in houses, cottages or barns. It was only towards the end of his life, when the early Methodists were made unwelcome at many parish churches, that these groups began to join together to build their own chapels and churches. Even then it was still required that every Methodist should be a member of a class or a band, as the groups were known in those days. Such groups have always been a part of Methodism, though for some decades they fell into disuse in many areas. In recent years all the churches have been rediscovering house groups as an important means of fellowship and learning. John Wesley in his teaching on small groups stressed particularly the value of fellowship. There is no doubt that through meeting together and talking together we can receive strength and help as we try to live out the Christian life. The importance of fellowship cannot be exaggerated – it’s very lonely trying to be a Christian on your own. Wesley also emphasised that small groups are valuable for learning more about our faith; through talking together we are able to learn from one another. Listening to sermons is often not a very effective way of learning because there is no real opportunity to ask questions or to ask for things to be made a little clearer. We currently have only one bible study/house group at The Grove,

a very low number for a church of The Grove’s size. That group has a regular and faithful attendance but it would be good to have more people coming along necessitating the development of new groups. Fellowship groups can be a source of great help and encouragement in living the Christian life. If we ignore such opportunities we may be making that harder than it really is.

With best wishes Mark

'Come and Sing' Jonah Man Jazz

Sharon Brocksom, the Circuit Children & Families Worker, tells us about a circuit event on Friday 15th June 2018 at Trinity Methodist Bramley from 6.00 to 8.30pm, a ‘Come and Sing: Jonah Man Jazz’ by the composer Michael Hurd (1928-2006). This is planned as a fun way to celebrate Bible Month in June 2018 as the theme is the book of Jonah. It is open to everyone and I do mean everyone, all ages, abilities and experience. We'll learn together the songs that tell the story of Jonah, we'll eat fish and chips, have another quick practice and then, 'perform' from 8.15 -8.30pm. If anyone plays an instrument, bring it along. No need to book, just turn up. (If you have a music copy, bring it along).

The Grove July Picnic Concert Summer should be with us by July and then …., and then, it's a time for picnics – packed meals, comfy settings, and leisurely encounters in friendly company. But, there's always a big problem with eating outdoors. It's the weather! Summers at home are often cooler than those on the Continent and as Yorkshire experiences a fair amount of rainfall throughout the year, July is no exception. So why not come and enjoy all the pleasures of a light, relaxing picnic in the stunning surroundings of The Grove Centre? As part of The Grove's Anniversary Concert Series, on 14th July the church is hoping to do something different - to host a picnic concert in the Main Hall, a picnic that's indoors not outdoors so it won't be rained off or finish up as a scarf and overcoat event if the weather should do the usual. Don't like set food menus? Don't worry - the idea is to book a place at a table with friends (or strangers if you really want to be brave and have a new experience!) and to bring your own food. Bring what you like to eat, as much or as little as you want: snacks, sandwiches, pork pies, whatever you fancy. The church provides the tea, coffee and juice and of course the music to relax by. Even now, people are planning their contributions – including, Mitzi Whitham on the piano, The Grove Orchestra, the instrumental excitement of Peter Reasbeck and the spectacular (new to The Grove) Harrogate Steel Pans. Come along, meet friends, chill out and enjoy music to relax to. A sensational summer occasion awaits. More details later.

The Grove Methodist Mission Project 2018 Thank you for the on-going donations that are being made for the May-June carboy appeal that is focussed upon the project, 'Keep a girl at school'. The aim for these donations is to make a difference to girls in the Pece area of Northern Uganda who feel pressured into dropping out of school at puberty and thus becoming vulnerable to exploitation and abuse. It is also good to pass on grateful thanks for the small difference that has been made by use of some of our previous gifting to Soleterre Children’s Cancer Family Centre where Shirley is a volunteer. Health Soleterre promotes the opening of welcoming houses for children with cancer. Part of the education money that has given by the church has been used to create 12 chalk boards for the Soleterre Children’s Cancer Family Centre. Shirley is helping to set up a classroom for the children who stay 9 months in the hospital to receive their chemotherapy and so the new boards will be much appreciated. Many thanks for your support.

The new Director of Chaplaincy and Spirituality at Methodist Homes is the Rev. Christopher Swift. The following is taken from his most recent letter:

MHA’s 75th Anniversary MHA will be holding a Thanksgiving Service to mark its 75th anniversary. In 1943, the Rev Walter Hall gathered a group of friends together in an attempt to find a solution to the problem of accommodation for vulnerable older people.

Walter Hall had originally intended to retire in 1940. The war prevented it and he was still in harness when the war ended in 1945, that year he retired from the active work of the ministry. But he still continued his work as the secretary of MHA. In 1945 the first MHA residential home opened in Surrey.

75 years later, MHA delivers a range of high quality services to 17,800 individuals; 4,680 older people living in care homes, residential, nursing and specialist dementia care; 2820 older people living independently in a range of purpose built apartments with flexible support and personalised care; 10,330 older people supported via live at home services in the community.

To celebrate MHA’s 75th anniversary, there will be a thanksgiving service held at Derby Cathedral on Saturday 13 October at 3pm.

Director of Chaplaincy and Spirituality Chris Swift, said: “Our Service of Thanksgiving will not only celebrate the work of MHA but look forward to its next chapter. Derby Cathedral is a wonderful venue for us to mark our 75th anniversary and I look forward to welcoming our supporters, residents, families and staff to what I am sure will be a fantastic service.”

supported by a local committee. Our services are provided by a dedicated team of volunteers. We would like to thank everyone involved in Live at Home Schemes for their hard work and commitment, and wish them continued success (see the following article by Sally Metcalfe, our local Manager. In his book Being Disciples, Rowan Williams argues that following a teacher means more than turning up in a classroom. He writes that “being with the Master is recognizing that who you are is finally going to be determined by your relationship with him”. Living in this culture, even when it is as small as an inner circle of twelve, shows us a way of living where belief and action are a single experience. Prayer: Each day may we live in the Teacher’s company; being led and taught by love. Let our homes be places of learning, an apprenticeship in the school of Peace. At each and every turn, in all we do and say, may the Holy Spirit guide our ways until thy Kingdom come. Amen Wishing you every blessing, Rev. Dr. Chris Swift Director of Chaplaincy and Spirituality Leaflets can be found in the Narthex. Please take one if you would like to find out more.

Live at Home

MHA’s Live at Home Schemes are based within the community and provide a range of services for older people aimed at decreasing social isolation and loneliness. They are delivered appropriate to the specific needs of the locality and work closely with the wider community including both voluntary and statutory agencies. MHA says “As a charity we exist to ensure that older people can be connected within the community of their choice – empowered, engaged, cared for and loved. . .isolated no more.”

Horsforth’s own Live at Home Scheme has been supporting our older people in Horsforth for over 21 years, it was driven by Ken Faulkes with the support Rev. Paul Tudge and Horsforth Churches Together who continue to provide much appreciated sponsorship to this day. Leeds City Council has also been a large supporter of the scheme and provided early grants before the introduction of the Neighbourhood Network Contracts in 2010 which have provided Financial stability and have influenced the growth of the scheme to enable us to support over 600 members.

Today Horsforth Live at Home has over 630 members and 75 volunteers. We aim to enable our members to maintain (and in some cases regain) social contact and independent living. We run a varied programme of activities five days a week Monday to Friday, offering around 64 social activities a month, including lunch clubs, coffee mornings, table tennis, craft club, exercise classes and days out. There really is something for everyone. We also provide extra support for those living with dementia. Our HomeWard project is unique to the Horsforth area and has the aim of preventing hospital admission and readmission, providing both bedside befriending and additional support at home.
