The British asparagus season officially ends on Midsummer’s Day, 24th June.British growers have to stop cutting in midsummer so that the remaining asparagus spears can grow on into fern, converting sun into carbohydrates; these are stored in the root system or crown ready to fuel next year’s crop. Unless the harvest stops at the end of June there won’t be a crop next year! Once the British season is over the only asparagus available will be from the southern hemisphere, mostly Peru. There’s a wonderful range of new potatoes from growers right across the UK, including Mrs Thompson’s & Mr Vose. Watch out for these as they come to the market. A fantastic variety of beans are available at this time of year ranging from the good old fashioned broad bean to the runner (or stick) bean. Bobby beans should also be available soon. English pod peas from Yorkshire will be plentiful and sweet. Local new season cauliflower and broccoli should be coming through nicely depending on the weather. There will be plenty of availability of tomatoes with product coming from Lancashire, Yorkshire, Holland and Spain.

We are expecting plums, cherries, apricots, peaches and nectarines (both round and flat) from Spanish growers. Stone fruit from France will be along shortly. As we move further into the season quality and flavour will get even better and prices will ease. British strawberries really come into their own in June and you will see produce from growers as far afield as Scotland and Kent.
