My term is ending, and one of the regrets that I have as I leave is that I did not get to spend as much time with SWD as I would have liked. This district is so unique and full of fun individuals and projects. I am so grateful that you accepted me and that I was able to attend your Zombie-themed Fall Rally and James Bond themed DCON along with my friends. I had so many unforgettable memories at these events, like tripping and being the first turned zombie or helping facilitate your arduous House of Delegates. Your district is small, but your heart for service and impact on your communities is huge, and I want you to know that I am very proud to have served as your Sub Region B Trustee this past year. It was not easy, but with a great Governor like Omar and his supporting district board, you all made it through, and now you have great potential for more progress and growth, more impact, and more crazy experiences. Your new governor, Andrew Lee, is ready to help build your district and help realize what great potential that you have. I am sure that you will have the support of the new Trustee after me as well as the rest of International Board. What you do is great, and what you can achieve is even greater. Although I will no longer be a trustee, I will be watching for all the accomplishments the Southwest District will have. Thank you for sharing this part of your history with me and I'm so proud that I could be a service to the Southwest District. ~Ryan Max Ocampo Subregion B Trustee 12-13

Meet your District Administrators team!

Ron Smith is our assistant administrator and my right hand. Ron advises me and steps in when needed. Ron will be our SWD

administrator at ICON in Vancouver. Ron is a past governor for the SWD and is our district chair for the Eliminate Project. He is

a charter member of the Payson Dream catchers and the Scottsdale Young Professional Kiwanis clubs and knows how to

start and grow clubs. Ron will be working with our Eliminate Ambassador, Perla De Los Angeles to develop goals and activities to help us raise funds for the Eliminate Project.

The Kiwanis administrative team for CKI is ready and willing to provide resources to your club. Team members are assigned to different schools for organizational purposes, but each has a

functional specialty to help you in specific areas.

Lori Bonomo lives in Silver City and is the associate administrator for the Rio Grande division (southern New

Mexico and El Paso). Lori is a CKI alumnus from the Florida district and also advises the club at WNMU. She is a past president of her Kiwanis club and is the current club secretary. Lori works as an insurance professional

and lives in Silver City with her husband Mike. Lori knows how to charter a new club and can advise any

club secretary.

Dr. Jim Lee is a professor of drama, radio personality and much more at Eastern New Mexico University. Dr.

Jim is the voice of public radio in southeast NM and west Texas. As a past Kiwanis Governor for the

Southwest District, Jim brings a wealth of knowledge about Kiwanis and Kiwanis protocol. Jim helps in the Rio

Grande division and eastern NM.

Also, in the Rio Grande division and Zia Division is associate administrator Bert Benedict. Bert is best known in the Southwest

district as a great team leader and membership recruiter as the president of the Albuquerque Kiwanis club and Lt. Governor for division 2. Sounds like Bert can help with membership growth.

We have another past Governor on the admin team helping in the Kachina division (northern Arizona,) Bobby Davis. Bobby is the president of the Payson Dream Catchers and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Payson. The Dream Catchers is an Internet

club, so if you are curious about how that works contact Bobby.

C. K. Lieu is a member of the Kiwanis Young Professionals and serves on the Southwest District Foundation board of directors. C. K. has a vast experience in Kiwanis, CKI and Key Club, having been a board officer in all three organizations. Can anyone say

"K-Family Relations"?

Betty Misch has been advising CKI at the University of Arizona for several years and is always willing to help anyone with

anything. Betty has been in the Kiwanis family for many years and her late husband Dick even worked for Kiwanis. Betty is

really good at organizing registrations and has many ideas about how to do CKI service projects.

Joining Betty in the Baja Division is Lt. Governor Michael Iafrato. Michael is a CKI alumnus having served as CKI Lt. Governor in the Florida district. Michael is a professional food blogger and will be serving on the CKI technology committee. Michael also has more than 16 years in the hospitality industry working with Disney so

knows a thing or two about running conventions.

Our administrative team would not be complete without The Desert Rose, Executive Director Rose Ann Dodson. Rose Ann is a

past district Governor and a member of the Kiwanis Club of Queen Creek. She is a CLE instructor and her specialty is club

secretary.

The Kiwanis CKI Admin Team is here to advise and grow CKI. Use them! Please give them a big thank you next time you see them!

What is Leadership Academy? CKI Leadership Academy is an investment in the members of CKI. The six-day event is intense and focuses on the E6 Framework created by Brendon Burchard, author of the Student Leadership Guide. Facilitators walk students through the steps to envision, enlist, embody, empower, evaluate, and encourage. Students learn that true leadership is based on servant leadership, which requires leaders to put the needs of others first, and to realize that no matter whether or not you have a title, there is always a need for service to one another and to the world. This program takes members of CKI through an adventure, starting with the CKI amazing race and ending with a plan in place to serve. The most unique part of the program—and what sets it apart from others—is that students and facilitators have an opportunity to do a service project during the program. For more information: click here

As of May 1st, 2013 the Southwest District has completed over 700 service hours! That’s

amazing considering that it only includes two months of service completed by the clubs in the district. The University of New Mexico is currently leading in service hours with a total of 258 hours. Of course, that can all change on a month-to-month basis.

It’s important to keep track of your club’s service hours and have your secretary send in an accurate report each month for a few reasons. First, the international board likes to see how many service hours we complete as a district each month. It allows them to see how each district is performing relative to the others and how much service we actually do. Second, it allows us to stay connected as a district. Sharing with each other about the service we have completed and the upcoming projects we have is a great way to come together as a district. Last, keeping track of how many service hours we have completed allows us to achieve goals and commend ourselves for our hard work within the community. This year, the District Board hopes to complete 7,500 hours of service as a district. When your secretary sends in a monthly report of hours, it makes it easier to track our progress. It also makes it easier to celebrate the amazing amounts of service we complete as a district, which is really something to be proud of. So make sure to help your secretary with recording service hours each month and keep on serving, Southwest!

University of New Mexico

During the past few months UNM CKI has participated in a variety of service projects. We have worked with both preferred charities and other groups within our community. One such project was to benefit an organization called Little Dresses for Africa, with whom the Southwest District has worked with previously at Fall Rally. The event we conducted was both a Key Club social and a service project. During the project we transformed pillowcases into dresses that will be sent to little girls in need. It may seem strange to turn a pillowcase into an item of clothing, but it was surprisingly simple- no exceptional sewing skills needed! The trick was to undo a hem here, snip some fabric there, and of course add pretty details. Little Dresses for Africa is a non-profit that collects the dresses sewn (and britches for boys!) and sends them to towns in Africa, as well as other places in crisis. By doing this they aim to inspire home within the younger generations. The donated clothing gives Little Dresses for Africa the opportunity to travel to low-income towns and teach children about proper nutrition, hygiene and family skills. This is especially important in many regions in Africa, where the AIDs virus is prominent and many young children are left to take care of themselves. The clothing sent gives children a sense of aspiration, and the teachings provide them with knowledge that will serve them throughout their lives. We were able to change perspectives halfway across the globe while taking part in a fun-filled sewing party. This project allowed us to impact people beyond our normal locality; it helped to expand UNM CKI’s reach to the global community, which is a great felling for all of us!

Rio Grande Division Update

Western New Mexico University and New Mexico State University CKI Clubs are busy making goals and plans for the coming year.

At WNMU we are working closely with our Kiwanis Club sponsors and have a fantastic Kiwanis Advisor, Lori Bonomo, and Faculty Advisor, Dr. Cline. We have some of our officers in place and working on getting more members and positions filled when the fall semester starts. We are excited to have Carla Viejo Sanchez from Spain as our new Vice-President. WNMU CKI just complete a huge service project in the community promoting reading literacy and giving around 400 hours of service to the project. This project was made possible in part by a grant from the CKI Tomorrow Fund.

The NMSU President, Mirabella Macias, has been working hard to get their club up and running with re-chartering, membership growth plans and overall goals. Congratulations to all of them for working hard to see this club revitalized.

I encourage all clubs to consider applying for the CKI Tomorrow Fund in the late fall to help with funding some of your larger projects. It truly made a difference to our club and being able to implement such a large scale project.

Ramblings:

Western New Mexico University

During the months of April and

May, Western New Mexico CKI completed their extensive service work promoting reading literacy in elementary schools. The project involved getting funding from two sources, the CKI Tomorrow fund grant and the Disney Friends of Change grant. Because of this funding, the project was made possible for more than 150 elementary children in the Silver Consolidated School district. A special literacy and art workshop series was undertaken by members of CKI and including members of Key Clubs and other youth mentors, that culminated in community art shows and also the creation of full-color published calendars of children’s art for the purpose of promoting reading.

A program developed by Serina Pack called “For the Love of Art and the Read for Joy” program provides for a motivational reading program that includes youth mentors working with elementary students in an interactive reading and art watercolor workshop. Youth mentors lead the children in fun reading games, read with the students, and paint with them. Overcoming reading challenges are discussed and the importance of reading. Also, from the books that are read, the meanings of the books are discussed. This includes a book named, My Dad, John Mc Cain, that talks about Viet Nam, serving our country, patriotism, and strong family values. The other book used in the workshop was called Mahalia Mouse Goes to College. In this book, the importance of education is stressed and that anyone can go after their dreams no matter who they are. A Huge Success—150 Elementary Students Participated

May 31st to June 2nd the District Board attended a Tri-K training at Kamp Kiwanis! At this training your district board planned out the year, made long term goals for the district, and bonded as a team and with our Kiwanis and Key Club counter parts. Check out these photos from our weekend!

After coordinating the service work through the School Board, then with each elementary school and the teachers, during April more than 150 elementary children were able to participate in the program for free through six workshops. Then for Global Youth Service Day, the last weekend of April, all of the children’s art was displayed in community art shows. Two art shows were hung and managed for a week by CKI members after each of the children’s art creations were matted and mounted for display. In one of the two art show venues, more than 100 pieces of art were on display during the Kiwanis Club of Silver City’s year-end Student of the Year banquet, when incoming Southwest District Kiwanis Governor, Wendy Mortenson, visited.

During May, each of the children’s art pieces were created into literacy calendars. This required a lot of work to create calendars for each class and featuring the work of the children. The calendars included fun, family reading activities each month. Then the classes were each revisited and the calendars and art presented to the participants with the importance of reading discussed again. Also, each child received a free book thanks to Literacy Link Leamos, thanks to the coordination efforts of CKI. Also, all of the costs of the workshop were covered by the two grants and contributions by Serina Pack.

A total of 401 community service hours were involved with this project. A very sincere thanks is given to many as this project would not have been possible without the tremendous support of the Kiwanis Club of Silver City, the schools, Literacy Link Leamos, American Legion Auxiliary, administrators, youth mentors, CKI, and others, with special thanks given to Kiwanis member, Sabra Humphrey, retired English teacher and artist who helped with many aspects t of the project as a volunteer.

WNMU CKI attends many functions of the Kiwanis Club if Silver City and tries to represent CKI in many capacities within the district of Kiwanis in the southern region of the state of New Mexico ...so was the case when three WNMU CKI members attended the Silver City Kiwanis Club "Student of the Year" banquet on May 2nd, 2013, where Wendy Mortenson attended. Ms. Mortenson was presented a special painting by Serina Pack in admiration of her leadership inspiration to others. Mrs. Mortenson presented scholarships and special recognitions to area youth. The evening was also enhanced by an art show in progress by the service work completed by WNMU CKI from their literacy art and reading workshops made possible in part by the CKI Tomorrow Fund Grant. WNMU CKI sincerely thanks the Kiwanis Club of Silver City and Ms. Mortenson for their support of CKI.
