COLAC CHORALE The Colac Chorale was delighted to host this yearrsquos successful
Choral Festival held on Sunday May 22nd at the Colac
Performing Arts Centre A total of thirteen Choirs took part
and items included many different choral styles and
participating numbers ndash with quite a few groups choosing an
a`cappella style of presentation Choirs travelled to Colac
from Millicent SA Geelong Warrnambool Cobden and
Apollo Bay (where the 2017 Choral Festival will be held)
Various positive feedback comments were received following
the day
These included ldquoa most successful eventrdquo ldquodiversity of
performancesrdquo ldquowide range of choral stylesrdquo ldquo it provided a
wonderful opportunity to network and connect with other
choristersrdquo and ldquoa lasting memory will be that of seeing how
much all the choristers enjoy singingrdquohellip All will look
forward to participating again in the future
Two other positive comments involving the Colac Festival
were made regarding the ldquomagnificent afternoon teardquo ndash and
that consideration may be given to once again holding the
Festival ldquoduring the dayrdquo rather than in the evening (as
previously) thus enabling more convenient travel
arrangements and therefore more distant groups able to
consider participating
Once again the Colac Chorale was very happy to host such a
positive event
We will now turn our attention to preparing for our
forthcoming concert with a ldquobird themerdquo later in the year
Gwenyth Knox (5231 4278)
Editor Note Congratulations to all who participated in this
years most successful festival Thanks and congratulations to
the committee and members of The Colac Chorale who
hosted the event
MILLICENT CHORAL SOCIETY
In May we held a successful Sunday afternoon Variety
Concert Our guest artist was the Mt Gambier City Band and our
local theatre company The Company of 7 As always after
our functions afternoon tea was served We have been pleased with the response from audience participants
Our winter break has begun but forward planning includes
a Pleasant Sunday Afternoon on Oct 23 and a concert for residents of our local Aged care residence on Oct 24
And then Christmas is just around the corner Jennifer

GEELONG U3A CHOIR It is hard to believe that Easter has come and gone and June is
almost over
U3A Geelong turned 30 this year and on Saturday 30th July at
Cobbin Farm a full day of outstanding speakers from science
music medicine literature wellbeing and history will be
presented The cost is $1000 which includes a lunch box tea
coffee with birthday cake and champagne
Last month our Choir had the joy of sharing music at the 21st
Anniversary of the Combined Belmont Probus Club On
stage we all enjoyed the chance to demonstrate our
performance skills with lots of happy faces and this was a
great chance to share our music with friends The audience
were so enthusiastic that the Choir was even afforded a
standing ovation at the end of the concert Particular mention
must be made to our fantastic Music Director Margaret
Hughes and our Accompanist Jan Smith who with their
guidance and patience the U3A Geelong Choir is what it is
today
We are currently rehearsing new music for a concert to be
held in JulyAugust
Music is everywhere whether itrsquos humming a tune in the
shower singing along to the radio or hearing a busker on the
footpath music features prominently in all our lives and one
of the simple joys of life is being able to share this music with
others
And In Case You Didnrsquot Know Neuroscience shows
singing connects the neural pathways in the brain differently
and releases endorphins making people healthier happier
smarter and more creative That explains basically why we
are a good bunch of well-adjusted contented friendly easy
going tolerant and capable choristers
Till next time keep warm protect your voices and happy
singing

THE GEELONG CHORALE The Geelong Chorale performed a program of English and
French romantic music on Sunday April 17 at St Pauls Anglican Church Geelong The wonderful acoustic
enabled us to produce a lovely concert for which we
received much commendation The concert opened with
the English component - I was Glad Song for Athene and God is Gone Up Vaughan Williams Valiant for Truth
was very well received and we repeated this wonderful
work at the Western District Choral Festival The first half concluded with Psalm 148 by Holst The second half
comprised French music - four lovely motets by Maurice
Durufle and the beautiful Solemn Mass by Louis Vierne
We were fortunate to be accompanied on the organ by Dion Henman One could almost imagine we were singing
at Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris where Vierne was
organist Dion also played Prelude on Psalm 37
by Herbert Howells in the first half and Toccata from
Suite Gothique by Louis Boellmann in the second half
Our next performance was at the Western District Choral
Festival where we also performed Waltzing Matilda
Special thanks to the Colac Chorale for their excellent
organisation of the festival and we are already looking
forward to 2017 in Apollo Bay
Our next concert When Icicles Hang is on Saturday July 30 at 630pm It is a cafe concert at the Geelong Racing
Club Over the course of the evening we will sing music
about winter The title piece is a set of 6 Elizabethan
poems set to music by John Rutter The music may be about winter but the atmosphere and meal will be warm
and inviting We hope you can join us Angela West 044

GEELONG HARMONY CHORUS Theres not a lot to report other than a very pleasant sojourn to Wollongong where we competed in the Sweet Adelines
Australia regional championships and although we missed
out on any bling we did improve our national ranking by
three places from 10th last year to seventh this year which pleased our Musical Director Alex Morris no end
As always wed love to have more members Were a great
bunch of women singers who take their a cappella harmony singing very seriously but we also manage to fulfil the fun
and friendship part of the deal too If you know a woman
who loves to sing the ringing chords of four-part a cappella
barbershop then get her to call Cynthia on 0406 666 737 or go to our website geelongharmonycomau and let us

about the festival in the report from The Colac Chorale on Page 2
Yesterday was the second Singing the Classics for 2016 attended by a large turnout of choristers and light opera aficionados from
around the district and Melbourne John Stubbings (star of many shows presented by GSODA Geelong GampS and Lyric Theatre)
directed the group through a selection of favourite choruses from light operas and musicals including Die Fledermaus The Gipsy
Baron and The Sound of Music before inviting Margaret Hughes Musical Director of the Geelong U3A Choir to conduct a
comic piece Painless Opera by Phyllis Wolfe-White This had the group in stitches as they worked their way through a medley of
popular operatic tunes to words like ldquoI never did like opera They always sing too highrdquo (O Mia Babbino Carordquo Puccini) Anne
Pilgrim (founder and co-ordinator of For the Joy of Singing the Classics) was a most accomplished accompanist With the popu-larity of singing songs from the shows itrsquos likely that Singing the Classics 2017 will feature another chance to sing your favourite
choruses and songs

As always wed love to have more members Were a great
bunch of women singers who take their a cappella harmony singing very seriously but we also manage to fulfil the fun
and friendship part of the deal too If you know a woman
who loves to sing the ringing chords of four-part a cappella
barbershop then get her to call Cynthia on 0406 666 737 or go to our website geelongharmonycomau and let us
know Anna Marie Shew
