George Strait Wins ACM Entertainer

Of The Year On April 6th in Las Vegas, NV, George Strait won the Academy of Country Mu-sic’s Entertainer of the Year Award for the first time in 24 years. Back in 1989 when

he first won the Award, it was voted on solely by the industry. But now, the Award is voted on by both the industry AND the fans, which makes it seem more special to George.

George was so excited that he actually tweeted, “#mysecondtweetever-Thank you to the fans for this honor! You mean every-thing to me!”.

This was George’s 18th ACM Award. He won his first more than 30 years ago in 1984 for Top Male Vocalist (a category he has won five different times through the years-1984, 1985, 1988, 1996 and 1997). Three of his albums have been name ACM Album of the year: Does Ft. Worth Ever Cross Your Mind (1987), Blue Clear Sky (1996) and Carry-ing Your Love With Me (1997). In addition to the 18 “regular” ACM Awards, George has also received the Gene Week Special Achievement Award in 2002, the 40th Anniversary Milestone Award in 2005 and the Artist of the Decade

(2000’s) Award in 2008. His career remains the envy of every artist active today but this last year has been even more amazing for George. His two-year “The Cowboy Rides Away Tour” has been

selling out across the country and will finish in Dallas on June, 7th. He won the Coun-try Music Associations Entertainer of the Year Award for the third time last year, and was also the first country artist to receive Billboard Magazine’s highest accolade, the Legend of Liove Award. And, he achieved his 60th No. 1 hit with “Give It All We’ve Got Tonight” ~ an accomplishment no artist in any genre has reached except for him. The man’s not slowing down either! It will be exciting to see what awards and honors still await in the future.

At 22 years old, Clint Summers is no stranger to winning. The Lake City, Florida cowboy started roping when he was just five years old and progressed through the jackpots. He has been the champion at the International Finals Youth Rodeo and the Ram Southeastern Circuit Finals. But Sum-mers will never forget March 15, 2014, a warm day in San Antonio, Texas where in less than four hours he earned more than three times what he’s won in his entire PRCA career. Summers, a heeler, teamed up with two-time World Cham-pion header Matt Sherwood, of Pima, Arizona, to claim the richest first place payout in George Strait Team Roping history, a whopping $265,800 in cash alone. The pair began their winning streak by turning in the fastest time of the qualifying rounds on Friday, a 4.54 second run in rotation five and going into Saturday’s finals with the fourth fastest time on two head. Turns out, fourth place seemed pretty comfortable for Sherwood and Summers. As the final round ticked down on Saturday, the duo found themselves in the fourth high call position, but with just three tenths of a sec-

A Record Breaking Payday for Sherwood & Summers

Matt Sherwood and Clint Summers cashed in on a record-breaking payday at the 32nd GSTRC, earning over $265,000 in cash alone, plus prizes. The pair is shown here with the King of Country Music, George Strait himself.

Nick Sartain and Rich Skelton, both past GSTRC Champions, were just .13 seconds off the championship pace and picked up

well over $100,000 as the reserve champions.

ond separating the top five teams, it was anyone’s roping to win...or lose. If you’re not familiar with the GSTRC, ropers qualify on Friday in a two-header with the top 50 teams returning on Saturday with a clean slate to rope three more rounds. For the first 28 years, ropers just bowed up and roped against the entire field for two rounds to determine the fastest 50 teams. In 2011, George Strait and his staff made a significant, roper-friend-ly change to the format, running Friday’s qualifier in 10 rotations, with the top five teams from each advancing. It’s a more efficient way to run the roping and contestants love it, pitting them against only 49 other teams and a more level field with the cattle. Needing a 5.80 to steal the lead from Arky Rogers and Wade Clayton, the Sherwood/Summers team blasted their final steer in 5.41 seconds, giving them the lead with a 16.79 on three head and three teams left to rope. Up next were the 2010 GSTRC champions, Coleman Proctor and Jake Long,

Arky Rogers and Chase Tryan turned in the fastest time on two head from the qualifying rounds. Left to right, Tryan, Strait, Rogers and Steve Miller

of Montana Silversmiths.

$3,000. With 697 teams, the 32nd George Strait Team Roping Classic once again, set records for size and payout. Over $1 million in cash and prizes was handed out over the two-day event, with $723,500 in cash alone...$50,000 of that was awarded in Friday’s preliminary rotations. Arky Rogers and Chase Tryan led the pack after Friday’s qualifying rounds with a 9.96 on two head from rotation five, receiving a pair of buckles. Each year in March, the San Antonio Rose Palace is the destination of hundreds of team ropers chasing the elusive yet lucra-tive GSTRC title. It’s also the destination of thousands of team roping fans and George Strait fans, either to watch their favorite ropers or trying to catch a glimpse of “King George”. Whatever their reasons, they’ve been doing it for 32 years now and they’ve followed the event from Kingsville, where it all started, to the current location in San Antonio, where it was once again a sellout. In addition to providing one of the most lucrative events for ropers, Strait also uses the weekend to give back. Following the first round on Saturday, Strait entered the arena with retired Lt. General Leroy Sisco of the Military Warriors Support Founda-tion to make the presentation of a new home to an American hero, Sergeant First Class, Christopher Livesay, retired US Army, who was wounded in battle defending our coun-try. Plus, through the efforts of the GSTRC and Priefert Ranch Equipment, the custom-painted chute used at this year’s event was auctioned after round two, with all proceeds benefiting the Justin Cowboy Crisis Fund and Western Wishes.

who suffered a no-time. A pair of world champions in Nick Sartain and Rich Skelton roped in the second high-call position, turning in a 5.64, just .14 seconds from taking the lead. Then, it was down to one team, the scary-fast tandem of Ty “Blaster” Blasingame and Dakota Kirchenschlager. These two were the high team back with an 11.10 on two head and both are known for their speed. Blasingame hung his rope on his stirrup as he left the box, tried to make a recovery but missed the head loop, making Sherwood and Summers the 2014 GSTRC champions. In addition to their $132,900 apiece for the average, the champions also each received a 2014 Chevy crew-cab dually from Cavender’s Chevrolet, a Bruton Strait Xtreme three-horse trailer, custom tooled leather rope bag, a Montana Silversmiths buckle, spurs from Tommy D’s, a golf bag and membership to The Resort at Tapatio Springs, plus another buckle and $1,500 each for the fastest time on Friday. Second place was nothing to sneeze at with Sartain and Skelton, both past champions of the GSTRC, taking home over $53,000 each and a pair of Twister saddles for their performance. Rogers and Clayton finished third for $36,550 apiece. Derrick Begay, who holds the GSTRC fast time record with Cesar de la Cruz (a 3.31 from 2007), and Kory Koontz won round one on Saturday with a 5.04. Luke Brown and Patrick Smith’s 3.71 was the fastest time of the roping and won round two, while Riley and Brady Minor turned in a 3.89 to take the top spot in round three. Each round winning team received

Thirty-two years is a long time to do anything, much less improve every year, but Strait and his crew have once again shown the team roping world that their event is at the top. It seems like we always go back to this quote from Strait himself...I hate to use it every year but it seems relevent, “My goal is, and has always been to make the GSTRC the best roping out there, I won’t be satisfied until I know it is.” You think he’s satisfied yet? Welcome to the summer issue Strait Talk. Since our last issue, George has had a very busy tour including sold out shows every-where he has gone. He has also had the 32nd George Strait Team Roping Classic and been awarded with the “Entertainer of the Year” Award by the Academy of Country Music. With all of that happening, it doesn’t sound like he has slowed down very much. With the 2013/2914 Tour coming to the end on June 7th in Dallas, George will take a well-deserved rest. Please remember that he still has committed to 5 more CD’s for MCA Records and at some point will look at some very special things to do in the future. We can assure you that you have not seen the last of George Strait, but there will just not be any organized tours in the future. He will also see all of you next year at the 33rd Annual George Strait Team Roping Classic in San Antonio, TX. We have also been asked by many of you, what will hap-pen to the Fan Club. We will still be here talking about George Strait and keeping you posted on his plans for the future. We promised back in March we would include the information and photos on the 32nd Annual GSTRC and have included a large story about the event in this newsletter with several photos. If you would like to see more photos, please go to our website at www.georgestrait.com and click on the Photo/Video Gallery. When you get there, please click on photos and then at the top of the page you will see a link for the 2014 GSTRC. There are many photos there. We hope you enjoy them. Also, please keep checking back for the dates for the 2015

GSTRC that will be announced later in the year. This year’s roping was extremely exciting. The winners were Clint Summers and Matt Sherwood. With 697 teams that entered, they took the Champions Trucks and Trailers loaded up with a lot of cash. Well worth the two days of work they per-formed at the San Antonio Rose Palace Arena. Please read the complete story, compliments of Kent Lynch of Dally Times, elsewhere in the newsletter. During this year’s GSTRC Retired Lt. General Leroy Sisco and George Strait pre-sented a home on behalf of the Military Warriors Organization to Retired Sergeant First Class Christopher Livesay of Wichita Falls, TX. The 2-time Bronze Star recipient was wounded and lost his leg during combat in Baghdad, Iraq in 2003. We congratulate and thank Sergeant Livesay for his service to our country. The final show of the tour in Dallas, Texas at AT&T Stadium is rapidly approaching. but a show was added in Hidalgo, TX on June 5th and that sold out in minutes. What a great way to ride away. George Strait received the ACM Top Award during the national telecast from the MGM Grand Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas. He beat out Blake Shelton, Luke Bryan, Miranda Lambert and Taylor Swift for the Fan voted Award. It was an exciting moment with the entire audience, including all of the other nominees, on their feet applauding the award. Many of you that have not been able to attend one of George’s final shows have asked about tour merchandise. The fan club

carries the same wearable’s as are available on the tour. Please go to our website at www.georgestrait.com and click on the General Store link and it will take you to the merchandise so you can see it. Many of the shirts do have tour shirts on the back if that is what you are looking for. Photos and descriptions of all the items are available in the store. We will be designing a new Christmas Sweatshirt, coffee mug and Christmas orna-ment that will be available in the next news-letter. Please look for it. In closing, we would like to thank every-one who sent in Birthday wishes to George and Bubba. They are appreciated. Also to all that sent in congratulations to George after his ACM win in Las Vegas, thank you very much. George was very gratified with the Award and it was very special to him because it was Fan Voted. He appreciates you all very much. Thank You!!! We hope that you have had a wonderful first part of the year and sincerely hope that it will continue to be good for you. We also hope you are able to catch one of the final concerts before the Cowboy Rides Away. Remember that there will be many more projects ahead for George and we can’t wait to tell you about them as they develop. Have a wonderful and safe summer ahead, listen to a lot of George Strait music and we will be back before you know it. As always, please pray for our Servicemen and women all around the globe as they work hard to keep our Freedom ringing. God Bless!!!
