II THE MONTH — NB SUPPLEMENT June-July 2017

CONTINUED FROM PAGE I

16 FRIDAY Richard, Bishop of Chichester, 1253; Joseph Butler, Bishop of Durham, Philosopher, 1752● The retired clergy, Readers and lay ministers who live and work in the Deanery of Basildon.● Diocese of Northern Michigan (Province V, The Episcopal Church).17 SATURDAY Samuel and Henrietta Barnett, Social Reformers, 1913 and 1936● The three fundamental disciplines of any church are worship, fellowship and learning. These are the foundation stones of our mission as we are sent out to share the fruits of God’s love. They are not simply an end in themselves. That’s why it is so helpful to be reminded in the calendar of people like Samuel and Henrietta Barnet. They lived out their faith in response to the squalid conditions they found in their parish in Whitechapel and worked throughout their lives to improve housing conditions for the poor and provide proper pensions. The life of the church at the service of the poor – now that’s Gospel living.● Diocese of Northern Philippines (Philippines)18 THE FIRST SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY● Pray for all those involved in Lay Development and Training in the Diocese, led by Elizabeth Jordan, Lay Development Adviser.● Diocese of The Northern Territory (Queensland, Australia), Rt Revd Greg Anderson, Bishop.19 MONDAY Sundar Singh of India, Sadhu (holy man), Evangelist, Teacher of the Faith, 1929 ● DEANERY OF CHELMSFORD NORTH: Area Dean: Tom Page. Licensed Lay Minister: Linda Robinson.● Diocese in Nova Scotia & Prince Edward Island (Canada)24 SATURDAY THE BIRTH OF ST JOHN THE BAPTIST● John the Baptist is the only 'saint' except Mary who has more than one day in the Christian calendar. And the most important one – unusually – is today, the day of his birth, when almost all saints’ days mark the day of death. That’s because John stands at an extraordinary turning point and the heart of his ministry is preparing the way for Jesus. Certainly he meets a gory and deeply prophetic death, but it is his prophetic life and preaching that stands centre stage and invites each of us to consider how we are preparing the way for Jesus in our lives.● Diocese of Nsukka (Enugu, Nigeria).25 THE SECOND SUNDAY OF TRINITY● Please pray for Denis Huntley and his team as they minister to the less able within our diocese.● Diocese of Nyahururu (Kenya), Rt Revd Stephen Kabora, Bishop.26 MONDAY● THE CHIGNALS (St Nicholas w St James) w MASHBURY—Clergy: Caroline Brown (PIC), Rose Braisby (A), Sandra Sykes (A). JULY 20171 SATURDAY Henry, John, and Henry Venn the younger, Priests, Evangelical Divines, 1797, 1813, and 1873. ● Ember Day ● Four times a year you’ll find the word Ember Day against dates in the Common Worship calendar, This has nothing to do with ashes or warm fires! It’s simply an abbreviation of a German word meaning “four times a year”. They mark the traditional “four times” a year, once each season, when Christians fast to thank God for his gifts and pray for particular concerns. They are days of penitence and prayer – themes that easily pass us by! There is a very early rule that ordinations should take place in ember weeks, and although we no longer keep that tradition, in the Church of England these are days when we traditionally pray for the ordained ministry.● Please pray for all those taking part in the Bradwell Festival this weekend.● Diocese of Ogoni (Niger Delta, Nigeria).2 THE THIRD SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY ● Pray for all those being Priested today, for their families and the parishes where they serve.● Diocese of Ogori-Magongo (Lokoja, Nigeria), Rt Revd Festus Davies, Bishop; and the Diocese of Ohaji/Egbema (Owerri, Nigeria), Rt Revd Chidi Collins Oparaojiaku, Bishop.3 MONDAY THOMAS THE APOSTLE● NORTH SPRINGFIELD (St Augustine of Canterbury)—Clergy: Jane Anderson (PIC). Reader: Simon Carpenter .● The Bishop’s CE & RC School: Greg Waters (HT).● Diocese of Ohio (Province V, The Episcopal Church).4 TUESDAY● EAST SPRINGFIELD (Church of Our Saviour) LEP—Clergy: Ann Mackenzie, (PIC). Reader: Gill Price.

● SPRINGFIELD (Holy Trinity)—Clergy: Keith Roddy (V), Stuart Hull (A). None of this matter because “if we live, we live to the Lord.” An invitation to the whole church to focus on Christ as the centre of our life.● Dioceses of Okigwe North and Okigwe South (Owerri, Nigeria).9 THE FOURTH AFTER TRINITY: Sea Sunday● We remember all those whose lives are lived on your great oceans and give thanks for the work and inspiration of The Mission to Seafarers and pray for all agencies who work amongst seafarers.● Diocese of Okinawa (Japan), Rt Revd David Eisho Uehara, Bishop.10 MONDAY● DOWNHAM (St Margaret) w SOUTH HANNINGFIELD (St Peter) & RAMSDEN BELLHOUSE (St Mary Vn)–Clergy: Stephen Robertson (R), Jean Andrews, Miranda Seaman (AC). He was known for his intellectual gifts and learning, but also for his compassion and his commitment to evangelism. At his own request he was buried in a simple grave outside the walls of Winchester Cathedral. But of course the cult of saints was such that people couldn’t resist moving his body to a special shrine in the Cathedral – accompanied apparently by a huge and dramatic downpour of rain! They chose to interpret that as a sign of blessing.... Senior leadership in the church is always challenging – so pray specially today for our bishops, for humility, the right use of gifts and a passion for the Gospel.● Diocese of Ondo (Ondo, Nigeria).16 THE FIFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY● Give thanks for the men and women of the RNLI and HM Coastguard, who risk their lives to protect those who travel the seas around our coast.● Diocese of Ontario (Canada), Rt Revd George Lindsey Russell Bruce, Bishop.

For reasons that are not at all clear – but which need challenging – the western church has often portrayed her as a prostitute. This is simply an example of terrible bigotry – the New Testament simply says she was someone whom Jesus had healed, and NEVER associates her with prostitution. So today is a day to set right our thinking and give thanks for the first person to carry the good news of Jesus’ resurrection from the dead.● Diocese of Osun (Ibadan, Nigeria).23 THE SIXTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY● Pray for the work of the Hockerill Foundation, which provides grants to teachers in training from this diocese, St Albans’ and others, especially those studying Religious Education.
