34 il MARKETNEWS li Toshiba UK Launches 'No Cost' Replacement Scheme for R22 AC Plant Toshiba Air Conditioni ng, a division of Toshiba Carrier UK, has launched a ground-breaking lease scheme en- abling users to replace obsolete R22 air conditioning equipment with the latest high efficiency systems - in most cases for no additional cost. Despite the long-anticipated ban, R22 is stili ooe of the most common refrigerants io use in installed sys- tems. Under EU legislation, however, use of R22 for topping up plant will be banned from the end of 2014. David Dunn, Toshiba Air Condi- tioning commerciai director, explains, "Systems still runn ing on R22 will effectively become obsolete. The problem is that there is a huge arnount of R22-based equipment still in use across the United Kingdom - in offic- es, shops, hotels, restaurants and many other commerciai and public build- ings. Estimates vary, but there may be upwards of 200,000 R22 systems still in operation." He adds, "This represents a very serious exposure for building opera- tors. Toshiba's new lease scheme en- ables them to rep lace aging R22 plant with new high efficiency air co ndition- ing in a budget neutra! way. The sav- ings in r un ning costs in the vast ma- jority of cases pay for the lease costs on the new equi pment, giving up to seven years peace of mind - plus high quali ty heating and cooling for build- ing occupants." The key to the scheme is the use of high efficiency R410A eq uipment to replace old R22 systems. The new plant uses much less energy to de- liver the same cooling and heating to a building, dramatically reducing the user's energy bills. In most cases, the monthly saving in running costs wi ll equa! the lease costs for th e new equipment, making the replacement program budget neutra!. "It is a painless way for end us- ers to solve the R22 headache," says David Duno. "And the sooner peopl.e make tbe switch, the quicker the car- bon reductions kick in for their build- ing or estate, delivering a significant environmental benefit." Toshiba already reports keen inter- est in the scheme still dependent on R22-based a ir conditionin g. A key attraction in the current economie cli- mate is that the scheme solves th e R22 problem without requiring upfroot in- vestment in capitai costs. ICA Claims MicroGroove Copper Preferred over Microchannel Aluminum The International Copper Association (ICA) recently announced the advantages of MicroGroove technology cornpared to microchannel aluminum in air conditioning and refrigeration (ACR) applications.

According to the ICA, MicroGroove technology consists of smaller diameter copper tubes witb enhanced surfaces. Both features contribute to improved rates of beat transfer between the refrigerant and the tube walls, mak.ing it possible to use Jess materia! in smaller, lighter evaporators and condenser coils. Smaller diameter refrigerant paths also could be realized with extruded aluminum tubes, whereby severa! channels are produced in one flat, ribbon-like tube.

Round copper tubes offer severa! important advantages over aluminum microchannel tubes: - Many OEMs bave already realized

increases in beat transfer using round copper tubes without the added costs and risks associated with aluminum brazing. - In evaporator applications, mois

ture is more readily removed from the evaporator coils because there are no flat tubes between the fins but rather the fins surround round copper tubes, allowing for easy drainage. - Durability is an issue. Por most en

vironments, copper tubes are preferred over aluminum tubes on the basis of durability and corrosion resistance. Copper is proven as a tube materia! in ACR applications. Costly coating processes, as often required for ali aluminum beat exchangers, are not necessary. - MicroGroove coils can offer smaller

refrigerant volumes than microchannel coils because the tube ends are connected by small U-joints rather than bulky headers.

MicroGroove technology applied to various ACR units

"In summary, MicroGroove tubes provi de ali of the advantages of smaller diameter tubes without the drawbacks of aluminum and tbe overhead of aluminum brazing," says Nigel Cotton, MicroGroove team leader for the ICA.

3.3 MW of Turbomiser Chillers Installed in London Data Center Colt's data center in Wapping, London , has been equipped with ultra efficient Turbomiser chillers as part of an upgrade delivering a total of 3.3 MW of high efficiency cooling. The facility, located at Princes Court in East London, will be cooled by six of the Turbomiser macbines, each rated at 550 kW.

The contract was won by Bristolbased specialist Cool-Therm against stiff competition, following successful

performance tests with Thrbomiser at Colt's Powergate data center. Monitoring by the client showed tbat energy consumption fell by 55% following the replacement of existing chillers with Turbomisers.

Following installat ion of tbe Turbomisers, the site's power usage ratio (tbe total data center power to the power used by tbe computing equipment) bas been reduced by 24%, representing a 140 kW savings in electricity at any point intime. Over tbe lifespan of the equipment, it is estimated that Colt will have helped to reduce UK carbon emissions by at least 20,000 tons of co2 (5,200 tons of car·bon).

Rob Young, who headed the project for Cool-Tberm, said , "Taking into account ambient fluctuations, this equates to an annua! savings of well over flOO,OOO."

The award-winning Turbomiser chiller was developed by UK-based Cool-Therm and its partners, working

35

in collaboration witb Italian manufacturer Geoclima.

Based on oil-less Turbocor compressors that use virtually friction-free magnetic bearings, Thrbomiser can achieve EER of 10 and above without tbe need for additional free-cooling circuits with expensive glycol, saving both on initial cost and ongoing pump energy.
