Well, why not, we thought. Why not half the magazine just for guys, and half just for the ladies? And so, we did it: His Biz/Her Biz. Because let’s face it, there are some things that are just natural draws for men – like How to get Killer Abs. Or How to get Women (see our fashion pages).

And then there’s stuff that women want to know – like how to keep the pounds off when you have a desk job. Or how to get your energy back (when you’re too tired for fun, romance, the kids, heck, what if you’re too tired for TV??)

Ok, let’s face it: men will be scoping out the women’s issue and the women will be devouring the men’s issue: we all want to know what the other side is thinking! But in the end here’s the conclusion: Celebrate the differences, between gender, between age, education, leadership styles and more. And somewhere we can all meet in the middle (see our center spread) to connect, because working together is really the Smartest Biz of all!

ever heard this before?“You can’t make money in The Market.”

“The Market is too risky for me.”

“You’re just gambling if you have money in The Market.”

What is The Market? To most it is some nebulous term that means putting their money in places they truly don’t understand. When people say The Market they could mean a number of different things. I always ask…do you mean stocks, bonds, alternative investments, commodities, options, annuities…what are you referring to? Unfortunately, a large majority of people have bought an investment without truly understanding what they own and why they own it.

Solution… and it really doesn’t need to be any more complicated than this, invest in what you know and have a long term plan. Of course, one should learn as much as one can to make informed decisions to diversify. Having a beautifully diversified portfolio, although important, is not the same as having a long term investment plan. The reverse is also true. Although it’s cliché to say, it’s true: people don’t plan to fail, they just fail to plan. There is a big difference in having money in The Market and owning pieces of the best companies in the world. Do you know what you own and why you own it? What is your long term plan to get you where you want to go? u

gender in the workplace

BIZ Feature

Men are from Mars, and women are from Venus, right? We all know that men and women operate differently from each other—and that’s true in the workplace as well. Peggy Mastel, a Sioux Falls corporate trainer, offers some advice on how to work with members of the opposite sex.

WOrkPLACE TOP CHALLENgES

For women:Getting heard. A classic scenario: A woman is raising an issue or making a point at a meeting, and is ignored, a man then restates it and people start paying attention and addressing the point. Research shows that women are interrupted more and/or dismissed in public, in boardrooms and in general gender-mixed discussions.

For Men: Confusion about the ground rules. A lot of men are confused as to what the ground rules are. They acknowledge that times have changed but lack clarity as to what has changed behaviorally and attitudinally, and that the 'new' rules seem to vary from individual to individual.

“Every person – male or female - sees the workplace through his or her own unique perspective which is the result of experiences, education, cultural values, age, and gender,” says Peggy Mastel, Corporate Trainer in Sioux Falls.

“Organizations used to expect people to assimilate… to fit in and act like the majority of the employees. And most of the people in leadership roles were male, so predominantly male behaviors were accepted.”

The workplace has seen a dramatic shift since the “Mad Men” era of the male-dominated workplace, notes Mastel. Now with more diverse work environments, organizations need to re-examine their organizational charts; re-think how they hire, train, and promote.

“That yearly hunting trip may not be as acceptable when you have such a diverse workforce and then eventually you correlate the hunting trip to a promotion of a male subordinate,” she says.

Mastel has seen a lot of change in her 18 years of corporate training. “Training often has a negative connotation in the workplace. Nobody wants to attend a training session,” she says. “And it’s even harder to convey to Executive Leadership that training is necessary. Bosses will often wonder why there are

high turnover rates among their frontline employees.” But this is where Mastel steps in to help them make the connection.

“Gender differences in the workplace force us to ask better questions and clarify expectations,” she says.

Most important, according to Mastel, is open communication between superiors and subordinates.

In this shift of workplace dynamics, what’s her best tip on how men and women can work together? Look past gender, and look at things through your boss’s personal lens, she advises. Try to see what the boss (male or female) needs to achieve and how you can contribute to the success of his or her team or department.

“We need to put aside gender differences and focus on our colleagues’ strengths. From those strengths we will be able to better maximize productivity and not let small differences - such as gender - get in the way of our goals.”

Conclusion: The most effective workplace is one that encourages men and women to maximize their respective strengths, and to allow those strengths to coexist in a supportive and aware environment. u

BIZ Spotlight

How do you define success? A house, cars, elaborate vacations, lots of money...or is it something else? If you talk with Robert (Bob) Lowrey he will tell you that the secret of success is helping other people get what they want. Lowrey works as the managing partner for the Lowrey Financial Group of Northwestern Mutual Financial Network. “People that have sustained long-term success have an attitude of servant leadership.”

How to Make a MILLION in

the Sioux EmpireHow one Man found Success with a Leadership Style of GIVING by Angie Bakke, MBA

June 201 1 | BizNOWmagazine.com | 9

The modern servant leadership movement was launched by Robert K. Greenleaf in his 1970 essay, “The Servant as Leader,” in which he coined the terms “servant-leader” and “servant leadership.” According to the essay, the servant-leader is a servant first, making sure that other people’s highest priority needs are being served.

In order to be a servant leader, one needs qualities like: listening, empathy, awareness, persuasion, foresight, stewardship, building community and integrity. Acquiring these qualities tend to give a person authority versus power. Lowrey shares that “without integrity there is no trust...without trust....there is no leadership!”

So how does one find success in an industry that’s ultra competitive and highly regulated? “In a crowded field in any industry, you have to define what you do different and do a better job than anyone else. One difference in process for us is that our reps spend more time listening and less time talking, that’s why we’re known as the quiet company!”Lowrey shares that he’s had many great mentors along the way and the common thread was servant leadership. “While mentoring others, I continue to have my own mentors today as well, as I’m still growing and you need help to grow. Your mentor is someone who holds the mirror up in check of what you’re doing.” Mentoring for Lowrey doesn’t end at work; he mentors his own children by sharing his faith and his time. “I get to do what I love – hunt and fish...and connect with the boys.” Originally from western Oklahoma, Lowrey and his wife Jana have lived in Sioux Falls for the last 20-years. Together they have 3 boys, a daughter-in-law and a beautiful granddaughter named Emily.

As a servant-leader, Lowrey stresses the importance of faith. “The best business leaders have a strong faith. The higher you go up in leadership, the harder the decisions are and the bigger the decisions are. Your faith life helps you make better decisions.” Smiling, Lowrey says that “Wisdom comes from experience....and experience comes from making mistakes and learning from them.” At the end of the day, success for Lowrey is seeing others achieve success in their lives and helping families and businesses weather the financial storm!

A quote from Lowrey’s favorite author, John Maxwell sums it up quite simply. “Most people who want to get ahead do it backward. They think, 'I'll get a bigger job, then I'll learn how to be a leader.' But showing leadership skill is how you get the bigger job in the first place. Leadership isn't a position, it's a process.” u

Hanging Leg RaisesThere are two ways to perform this exercise: Hanging leg raise machine or pull-up bar. With machine: (1) Bring knees upward towards the ceiling with knees bent. (2) When the quad muscles get parallel with the floor, continue bringing up knees toward the chin. (3) Hold for a one-second count and proceed to let your legs back down to starting position.Pull-up bar: With a reverse grip on the pull-up bar, do the same steps as in the machine. For more resistance, perform the exercise with a dumb-bell squeezed between quads. Bicycles(1) Start lying with your back on the mat.(2) With legs straight raise them six inches off the floor.(3) Perform a crunch as you raise your shoulders off the ground.

(4) Bring your right knee towards your chin with your right knee bent.(5) Begin rotating your core so that left elbow rotates toward the right knee.Tip: Focus on keeping your abs crunched and shoulder blades up off the floor.

Weighted CrunchesPerform on a workout ball: (1) Lay with back on ball, roll backwards as far as you can. (2) With a weighted plate in hands, extend your arms toward the ceiling.(3) Proceed to crunch abs and bring shoulder blades off the workout ball.(4) Raise the plate straight to the sky, then proceed to let yourself back down.

1. Get a physical exam every year — no matter how good you feel.“Men tend to put off regular check ups or physicals because we think, ‘If there is nothing to complain about, then a visit to the doctor is a waste of time,’” says Dr. Scott Dierks, family medicine physician at Avera Medical Group McGreevy Clinic. However, health problems such as high blood pressure and diabetes can be present for years without symptoms, and when caught early, they can be treated easily, Dierks says.

2. Know your cholesterol numbers. At age 20, men should have a cholesterol screening and continue to get screened every five years. High cholesterol is one of several risk factors for heart disease. It’s important to know your numbers for total cholesterol and HDL cholesterol, which is the healthy cholesterol that moves “bad” cholesterol out of the blood stream. Desirable Total Cholesterol (TC).......................Less than 200HDL Cholesterol.................................More than 60

3. Adopt healthy habits. Men usually develop heart disease 10 to 15 years earlier than women do. According to Harvard Medical School, men can lower their risk of heart attack by 87 percent when they adopt healthy habits such as exercising daily and maintaining a healthy weight.

4. Be smart about tanning. Many people believe the myth that they should tan to protect their skin from a burn. But while not as painful as a burn, tanning damages the DNA in skin cells. "There is no safe way to tan," says Dr. Jana Johnson, dermatologist with Avera Dermatology and Laser Center. If you feel you must have a tan, consider a sunless self-tanning product.

5. Yes, you really do need to have "that test". Colonoscopies, which men should have at about age 50, can detect even early stages of colorectal cancer. Usually, no early symptoms of colon cancer exist, so the best way to prevent and cure the disease is with colon screenings. In fact, getting regular colon screenings can increase chances of surviving colon cancer by 90 percent. u

People often choose to measure success in terms of wealth, power or prestige. But for John Small, owner and general manager of Sunny Radio in Brandon, it’s not the size of your bank account that determines your success: It’s the number of people who have permanently tattooed your business logo on their bodies!

Since the launch of Sunny Radio less than a year ago, more than 100 avid listeners have gotten a tattoo of the station’s logo, a smiling sunny face. The people who choose to ink themselves range in age, occupation and sex – even Small’s mom recently joined the list.

The station pays for each person to get the tattoo, and the marketing tool has become just one example of Small’s creative, nonconventional approach to business. “I don’t know of any other company that’s doing something like this,” Small says of the tattoos, which came from an idea his wife and Sunny Radio co-owner, Heidi Small, had on the station’s morning show.

He could easily say the same about Sunny Radio itself: According to Small, it’s the first ‘80s-only music station in the Midwest. When beginning the process of purchasing and launching Sunny Radio, many people in the field told the Smalls it would be a mistake to play only ‘80s music. But they chose not to listen.

“I didn’t want Sunny to be the same as all the other stations in the area,” Small says. “I’d rather be an innovator, not an imitator. There is no need for something that someone else is already doing. We needed to do something innovative, unique and original to us.”

Despite the warm reception Sunny Radio has received in the Sioux Empire, getting the station off the ground hasn’t been easy, Small says. As general manager, morning show host, program director, promotions

director, web master and on-site engineer, he often pulls 12-hour days and usually works six or seven days a week. When the subject of finding balance comes up, he laughs and says he usually doesn’t, though it helps to have his wife as his business partner.

“She’s my biggest critic and my biggest fan at the same time,” he says. “We make a great team. I’m a big-picture kind of guy. I’m like a kite, with my head in the clouds. But my wife is the one on the ground holding the string.”

Even as a team, there are days when it can all be overwhelming. “I’m living a life-size whack-a-mole game,” he says. “I’m trying to stay on top of everything. It’s very much a process. I look forward to the day when I can grow my staff and phase myself out.”

If the number of listeners with Sunny tattoos is any indication of the station’s fast-track success, it sounds like that day might not be too far off.

“We’re definitely going in the right direction,” Small says. “I have a very ‘sunny’ outlook. I would say we’ve found success and are moving in the direction of more success. But there’s always a lot more to do.” u

Gray is Not a Black and white Issue

Color blocking is the perfect opportunity to play with colors. Some men are reluctant to mix and match colors, but shouldn’t be. Utilizing gray gives guys lots of options and gets them out of the black suit rut. Adding navy and a plaid tie allows the gray to really pop!

Research shows that men and women tend to use different communication styles.* While it varies from person to person, women usually process more; men tend to get to the facts quicker. Women often use a collaborative style: they get input, share ideas, and involve others. Men don’t need to have everyone on board: they tend to be more task-oriented and focused on outcomes. Resulting clash: men can become frustrated with women’s tendency to discuss details related to a project as a way of finding a solution, while women can become concerned when not everyone is included in the decision-making.

Solution: You need both male and female communication styles to deal with the complexity and diversity of situations in today's world. The dynamic workplace is one where men and women learn to value each other’s strengths and work together toward success. Celebrate differences!
