JUNE BYRON took the brave step to enter a public speaking competition despite having a fear of it.

The third-year Australian Catholic University education student entered and won the Ballarat campus oratory competi-tion, and went on to compete in the Sydney national competition, placing third.

Looking to next year when she would be applying for jobs on teaching rounds, Ms Byron thought this would be her last chance to enter the competition.

“While I’m at university I want to take every opportunity I can so I can get the most out of it, so I put my hand up to do it,” Ms Byron said.

Completing her degree as a

mature-age student who had l f h l i 10 d k d

left school in year 10 and worked in retail for 11 years, Ms Byron had never done public speaking before. “I’d never really had the chance,” she said.

She said the fi rst time she had to speak in front of her class at university she was nervous, but slowly got used to it as she became more comfortable with her classmates.

Having done teaching placements as well, she said she was fi ne speaking in front of students, but it was a group of adults who scared her.

“My first speech, I was so nervous. I could feel my knees shaking,” Ms Byron said. “If I

were to give the speech again now, I don’t think I’d be nervous at all.”

Ms Byron had to speak for five minutes on the topic of “Destination or the journey”,

“Everyone is capable and deserving of success. Sometimes it just takes that one person who gives you the self-belief, that inspires you to believe in yourself,” she said. “Life isn’t about the destination because we are all destined for the same thing one day.

“Life is all about the journey and people that you meet along the way which have the power to change one’s journey.”

Now in her first year of aBachelor of Early Childhoodand Primary Education atACU, the 19-year-old saidthe opportunity didn’t deterher from doing her best inthe HSC exams.

“I still tried to get the high-est ATAR (Australian Ter-tiary Admission Rank)possible,” she said.

The program rewards stu-dents who volunteer in their

communities. Ms Cavalericoached and umpired net-ball and volunteered forCancer Council Australia.

OctoberICT Symposium

9 October, 2014

Welcome back to Term 4 which is always a busy and exciting time for school communities.

Queensland Government Education AccordQueensland Government Education Accord

On 25 September I attended the Queensland Education Accord Summit at The Gap State HighSchool. The aim of the Education Accord is to build on the Government’s Queensland Plan whichoutlines the State’s vision for the next 30 years, identifying local and state-wide priorities. The singlemost important priority identi!ed in the Queensland Plan was education – foundational to all otherissues.

The Summit was attended by more than 450 parents, teachers, principals, education stakeholdersand Members of Parliament from across the State’s 89 electorates. A number of Catholic schoolcommunity representatives were included among the delegates.

Three main sessions focussed on the following themes:

Queensland’s future

School education in Queensland now

What matters in education now

Throughout the day, delegates were invited to participate in Participant Activitygroup sessions.

Summit participants provided feedback indicating that the Accord should focus on the key themesof:

teaching quality and school leadership

the need to develop students who are literate and numerate, and creative and criticalthinkers

the need to cater to diverse student needs

the impact of information technology on teaching and learning

A summary of the day, results from the session activities, and next steps in the consultation processare set out in the Queensland Education Accord Summit Communique.

In the coming months a draft Education Accord will be released for public consultation beforeapproval in late 2014. A representative panel of stakeholders drawn from Summit participants willalso consider the draft Accord to ensure community views are represented.

The !nal Accord will be presented to the Queensland Government for approval and public release in2015.
