by George Patterson, ARPCA PresidentHappy June to everyone! Before I recount

all of the current events for the membership, I want to share a great experience with you. In May, the ARPCA went to Watkins Glen for our season’s first Driver’s Education. I was assigned a D student named Collin Thomas. Collin had a few days on track but this was his first time at the Glen, one of the nation’s finest road courses. Collin is a relatively new ARPCA member with a Boxster S. He’s been learning the limits of his car and understanding what the German engineers had designed his car to do. I can’t describe what a great weekend I had as Collin’s instructor. To see him learn a new track and take his car around it with confidence was one of the most fulfilling experiences in my 20-year ARPCA membership. Collin was a fast learner and his confidence grew in a measured and safe way. To see him realize the potential of both himself and his car was simply terrific. On Sunday, Collin drove solo, and did so well. This is the kind of experience our club provides. It matters not what the event is, come out and try something new. There are people who will embrace and befriend you. Our Vintage Grand Prix is a great way to start your ARPCA adventure. If you’ve never been, you need to come. If you’ve been there, you know how great an event it is…

Besides our annual DE at Watkins Glen, May was a very active month... It was May 9-11 at the Glen where we’d had the best weekend weather in years. Lots of new and old faces and lots of fun. Our monthly business meeting happened at the Sewickley Car Store on May 15th [THANKS KC]. May 24 had our annual Car Control Clinic, where new and old drivers ran

exercises around the Vehicle Dynamics Course at Pitt Race. This event in its most simple terms makes drivers safer and more confident. We have a follow up course called Street Survival scheduled for September 27 at Pitt Race. The next day, on May 25th, again at Pitt Race, was our season’s first Auto Cross event. There were people who attended both the Car Control Clinic and the Auto Cross. That is commitment! Thanks to John Schrenker, Rob Hoffman, Tim Hronek, Scott Ishler, Scott Mores and all of the volunteers and instructors.

June keeps the momentum going. Our business meeting will happen on the 12th at Fowler Automotive. Please feel free to attend! Details on our website. On the 14th Porsche will be back at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. That day will be very busy indeed. It starts off at Generoasta in Warrendale with Cars N Coffee hosting Porsche Day. From there we will take a charity drive to Goosebumps in Canonsburg. This drive benefits UPMC Children’s Hospital and cancer research. Our host at Goosebumps,

Randy Evans, will have a BBQ going with live video of the Le Mans race, where former Formula One star, Mark Webber, will be piloting the Porsche 919 LMP1 race machine. You should plan to attend some or ALL of these events. See our site to register!!! Then on June 28 our second ‘Ladies Only’ event happens - a luncheon and Art Tour at the Duquesne Club. July is the host of our largest event of the year, the PVGP... Ed Rice with Ken and Louise Jeremiah are planning a PVGP this July that will be singular... We have PCA people from several regions outside our own coming. For race weekend, we have a welcome party Friday night at the Double Wide Grill in Mars, which includes Porsche Only parking. Saturday and Sunday of race weekend have catered lunches and many events in Schenley Park. Saturday night will be an informal gathering at Hofbrauhaus in the South Side. Please make your reservations EARLY and invite friends and family to attend. Mark down July 18-20 now!

As always, I ask you to take a moment to sketch out your Porsche schedule. You don’t want to miss anything this year. Check out our website www.arpca.com and register online for all events. The club is growing and new people are participating at every event which is the best... Please come out and meet the crowd. You’ll never find a better group of people. If you have any questions on ANYTHING, please contact me at [email protected]. Also, check out the new national site at www.pca.org. It’s all new and very user friendly.

As always, I am proud to be a part of such a great club. The cars bring us together, but the people are what keep us coming back. Hope to see you at the next event.

“If you don’t read the newspaper, you’re uninformed. If you read the newspaper, you’re mis-informed.” ¯ Mark Twain

Uninformed, mis-informed, uniformed… Whatever! And politics aside, well except for those of you on the wrong side, I wonder if this Twain-ism holds true in the automotive world as well. Examine if you will the June cover of some more popular car rags:

After closely reviewing the 10 hi-gloss monthly (or weekly) publications cited above, a clear pattern has emerged: Only three magazines can be relied upon for providing accurate automotive news. Hint – they’re the italicized titles. Oh, and another clear pattern emerged too… in none of the above publications did I find any quotes even remotely close to “Cool Prius”. Enjoy the calls [again], Cindy!

Welcome June! It is official – it’s summer – and we’re looking forward to a good one! Here are some fun and interesting facts about the sum-mer. Remember June is the month with the lon-gest daylight hours so I expect everyone will be out enjoying their Porsche! It is the beginning of summer and the start of Porsche season.

I was so excited for summer this year, I decided my article this month would be all about sum-mer. I searched some fun summer facts and a few tidbits about summer. • The name “flip-flop” originated because of

the sound that is made by slapping the sole of the foot and the floor when walking.

• The first day of summer is known as the summer solstice and this year it’s June 21.

• Many people enjoy throwing Frisbees in summer, but they were originally designed as pie plates in the 1870s. Students started throwing them in the 1940s.

• Ice pops were invented by accident in 1905 by 11 year old Frank Epperson. He mixed soda and water and left the mixture out overnight with the stirring stick still in it. Since the temperature was low, the mixture froze. He patented the idea in 1924.

• Even though this is the longest day of the year, it’s not the hottest, due to something

called seasonal temperature lag, which means that it takes a while for the oceans to let their stored summer solstice heat back into the air. That’s why it tends to be hotter in July or August than in June.

• France’s Eiffel Tower can grow by more than 6 inches in summer due to the expansion of the iron on hot days.

• In ancient times, most people swam in the nude; laws about decent swimming attire were created in the 17th century onwards. The first bathing suit for women was cre-ated in the 1800s. It was long sleeved with woolen bloomers.

• Watermelon is summer’s most popular veg-etable. It is part of the cucumber, pumpkin, and squash family. The average American eats 15lbs of watermelon a year and these juicy favorites are 92 percent water.

• The dog days of summer are a reference to the Dog Star which is part of the constella-tion Canis Major.

• June 18th is National Splurge Day!

I can’t wait to hear what all of you decide to splurge on! Enjoy the beginning of summer. Be safe.

Tail Of The Dragon Trip Report by Thomas DemkoWinter has finally broken its icy grip on our

region, so over the Easter holiday I was able to take a few days away from work to make an extended weekend drive to visit with family. Wanting to make the most of the road-time, I devised a purposefully circuitous route home to celebrate the resurrection of our precious and short driving season. I mapped my return route to Pennsylvania through the border of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.

The Tennessee-North Carolina border is home to the Smoky Mountains – a southern brethren to our own Allegheny region and all part of the Appalachian Mountain range. The Smoky Mountains are so named for the fog that naturally forms from the outgassing of the dense vegetation covering the range. The Smokies, as they are known in the colloquial, and the Blue Ridge mountains are home to some of the greatest driving roads in the eastern USA. These scenic drives are characterized by their astonishing natural beauty, breathtaking views, a mild climate and great road conditions.

Combine these attributes with a high performance vehicle and a few days’ vacation, and you have all the ingredients for a great get-away weekend or mini-vacation.

For this trip I mapped my route along highway US 129 – a portion of which is known as the Tail of the Dragon. The Dragon is so named because on maps the road resembles such, with 318 curves along an 11 mile stretch of road on the southwestern border of the Great Smoky Mountains National Park. Because the Dragon forms the border of the park – there are no intersecting roads, access roads, or development along this 11 mile stretch – eliminating at least one hazard of vehicles entering the roadway around the many blind corners on the road.

The Dragon has become a destination drive for motorcyclists and driving enthusiasts alike – becoming quite crowded on weekends with club drives, bikers, and curiosity seekers. The

Dragon is also still a public road and as such is subjected to the continuous efforts of law enforcement to keep it free of excessive speeders and illicit racing. Occasionally an 18 wheeler will attempt to navigate the route with disastrous results – closing the road while road crews attempt free the inevitably and hopelessly stuck tractor and trailer.

Knowing this I planned my drive for a weekday, Tuesday April 22, hoping to avoid the weekend crowds and traffic. Planning on an early start, I overnighted in Asheville, NC the previous night. Asheville is home to Biltmore Estate, the château built by George Vanderbilt and completed in 1895. To this day Biltmore remains privately owned in the hands of his descendants and is still the largest private home in the USA, encompassing 178,000 square feet and containing 250 rooms. Biltmore Estate includes 8,000 acres and contains a working dairy farm and winery. Depending on your route, Asheville is about 500 miles from Pittsburgh – easily placing it within one day’s drive. Throw in a run at the Dragon, a winery tour, a couple of great dinners, and two overnights, and Biltmore is a great destination place for a 3-day weekend getaway.

I rose early on the morning of the 22nd to make the 2-hour drive west to begin my conquest of the Dragon. The drive west along highways 19 and 28, paralleling Fontana Lake is every bit as scenic and beautiful and is a trip-worthy drive on its own merits, albeit without the notoriety.

The weather wasn’t as cooperative as one might wish – turning into a constant grey drizzle interrupted by intense periods of torrential downpours. However the gloomy weather kept the traffic, road-racers, bikers, tourists and gawkers to a minimum, and when I arrived at the Dragon and began the drive – I was a solitary vehicle travelling northbound on highway 129.

Rising up out of Deal’s Gap, the Dragon starts out timidly with a straight stretch of ascending road, punctuated with a few gentle turns. But within a minute or two, the Dragon quickly bares its claws – accelerating the intensity and amplitude of the curves it throws at you. The Dragon cuts a constant series of inside and outside turns through its ascent and descent through the Smokies – some of which are

effectively 180 degree switchbacks. Driving within your limits is critical on the Dragon, who is unmerciful in its ability to render justice for errors of judgment. Err on the inside and you can find yourself in the trees – but err on an outside turn and one could easily become airborne – with no small distance to a very hard landing. The Dragon is a public road with single lane traffic in both directions – so it is imperative to remain within one’s lane and not be tempted to cut the corners in a misguided attempt to improve one’s time. Several fatalities occur every year on the Dragon – mostly due to a driver or rider drifting out of their lane and directly into incoming traffic.

But on this day, with the inhospitable weather and bleak skies, I had the Dragon nearly all to myself. After the initial ascent and straight section, it only takes a few minutes to find your own comfort zone and settle into a pace for the switchbacks, sweeping turns, dips and esses. The berms are cut tight to the road and with their alternating overhanging trees or wide open skylines, they provide great incentive to remain within the painted lines on a controllable trajectory. After 318 exhilarating twisting turns, highway 129 runs out on the flats adjacent to Chilhowee Lake – continuing northbound toward Knoxville and other points north.

After completing my northbound run of the Dragon, I continued up highway 129 and after negotiating a series of local roads, I eventually intersected interstates 40 E to 81 N, 77 N, and 79 N to home.

If you are looking for a great way to spend a thousand miles and 3 days in your Porsche – I highly recommend an attempt to tame the Tail of the Dragon.

Registration is $75 per vehicle per day (Saturday and Sunday). This includes 2 lunches each day. Extra lunches can be purchased when preregistering for $15 each. All proceeds go the PVGP charities.

Some of the highlights of the PVGP week long experience include:• Friday July 11th – the Black Tie Gala at

Longue Vue Country Club – a few of us have registered for this event already, and it looks to be a good one. You can

get details and preregister at the PVGP website, www.pvgp.org.

• Weekend July 12th and 13th - the big-bore historic races at Pitt Race in Beaver County. This is always a fun event, and it features the bigger, faster, louder cars that do not race on the Schenley course the following weekend. It also includes the flashlight drags Saturday evening after the races. As in years past, the BMW Club will host lunch in their tent on top of the hill by the main building. Preregister online at the PVGP website for this event.

• Monday July 14th – Walnut Street invitational car show in Shadyside – join us for this excellent after work car show and dip into the local watering hole offerings as well.

• Wednesday July 16th - Tune up Party at Atria’s at PNC Park. This is the event that used to be at Bosa Nova downtown (that place closed). There will be a car show on the Clemente Bridge, which the City has closed for the PVGP for this event. This is always a fun event well attended by Club members. Preregister online at the PVGP website.

• Thursday July 17th – Cars & Guitars at the Hard Rock Café. We have reserved two tables for this event, and it should be well attended. Go to the PVGP website for more details and preregister.

• Friday July 18th – ARPCA Party at the Double Wide in Cranberry – this is our second annual get together to welcome out of towners and sister Club members to our gathering. There will be an impromptu car show as well, and you should drive out in your Porsche. Cash bar/food, but free great company and entertainment.

Rundschau • June 2014 \\ 13arpca.com

• Race Weekend July 19th and 20th – the “Big Show” includes top 10 Concours (new this year – all registered cars are eligible for an award, and you can vote for your top 5 favorites), door prizes, awards, great food, greater cars, and above all, friends gathering on the lawn and watching the races.

Also, this year we will have a special framed lithograph of the PVGP official poster from 2011 when Porsche was the Marque of the Year, and featured on the poster. It will be auctioned off on Saturday, July 19th, with all proceeds going to the PVGP charities (silent auction style). Don’t miss out on the opportunity to add this poster to your Porsche memorabilia and support the charities at the same time.

Be sure to preregister through our ARPCA website for the main PVGP Schenley Park event. It is best to register early so that we can plan for the proper amount of food, etc. Also, don’t be a

last minute registrant, basing your decision on what the weather might be. Even if there is rain on one or both days and you decide not to pull the garage queen out, think of it as a charitable contribution! Plus, you can still drive the grocery getter down to the Park, and walk up and get your lunch and visit with those of us brave souls who dare to drive in rainy weather!

The other big news this year is that the Greater Pittsburgh Automobile Dealers Foundation has stepped up as the new presenting sponsor for the Pittsburgh Vintage Grand Prix. The GPADF replaces Shop n Save’s 13 year run in that role.

Lastly, DON’T FORGET TO WEAR YOUR CLUB NAME TAGS AT THE EVENTS! We have great name tags, and you can order them now on the Club’s website.

See you at the races!

Around The Zone By Michael Soriano Zone 4 Representative

Greetings PCA Zone 4 Members,With the summer driving season already here,

hopefully all of you have had many occasions to enjoy the beautiful weather and lots of Porsche fellowship. I have already visited a number of regions throughout the zone, and had the opportunity to spend time on the track as well as at many social gatherings and fun-filled activities, and at each event I always appreciate meeting all of the PCA members that take the time to welcome me to their region. At each of these visits, I am always reminded that for me the PCA motto is so true, It’s not just the cars, it’s the people!

There are a lot of improvements being made within PCA to help get information to our members more easily. If you have not had a chance to visit the new PCA website, it has been fully updated. Also, our new Zone 4 Webmaster, Bob Harris has spent a great deal of time and has done a wonderful job updating the zone 4 website. At the Presidents’ meeting, I compiled the event calendars for all of the regions within our zone in order to create a Zone 4 Master Calendar. This master calendar has been created and will soon be available on the zone 4 website, so don’t forget to check out the new website http://zone4.pca.org to learn about events being hosted by your neighboring regions; I know they would love to have you attend. This month many of us will travel to Monterey, CA, to participate in the 59th annual Porsche Parade, a nationally organized week long extravaganza of competitive events and spectacular sightseeing, but for those of you not venturing west, there are a multitude of events to keep you entertained.

My schedule is quite full and as I continue travelling throughout the zone visiting all of the regions, I am reminded how truly special the Porsche camaraderie is, and I hope you will expand your horizons and travel to some of the outstanding events being held throughout Zone 4.

Please consider attending other regions’ events, such as:• Rally Sport Region is holding a Gimmick

Rally on June 1• June 5 Central Indiana Region members

are attending O’Daniel Porsche night at Germanfest

• Michiana Region members will be attending the Vintage Races at Indy on June 6-7

• June 8 is Southeast Michigan Region’s family day at Waterford Hills

• Ohio Valley Region is attending the Ault Park Concours on June 8

• Allegheny and Northern Ohio Regions are holding a DE at Nelson Ledges on June 13-15

• Central Indiana Region’s CruZionsville is June 14

• On June 15 Michiana Region will be holding an Autocross at Tire Rack

• Mid-Ohio Region’s 3rd Thursday Social Gathering is June 19

• Rally Sport Region’s Driver’s Education at Grattan is June 20-22

• Western Michigan Region’s Drive up to Traverse City is June 21

• June 27 is Maumee Valley Region’s Dinner and Drive-In

I look forward to having the opportunity of meeting each and every one of you at these upcoming events. If you have any questions of comments please feel free to contact me at [email protected]

Autocross Season 3 By Rob Hoffman, Autocross Chair

Well, season three is here and it is already off to a wild start. After a long winter, it was time for the annual pilgrimage to HRE to see none other than Mr. Trevor Hill for some fresh oil, sticky tires, apparently a sway bar bushing, and last but not least a clutch master cylinder.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of replacing one in a 944 I highly recommend it. It’s really great on the back and knees, yet there’s a lovely upside down under the dash element as well; followed up by a continued pumping motion for at least and hour and a half. I digress...

To PittRace the next day where 30 drivers showed up to participate on a course designed by Frank Gaus. His better half Kristi was running timing and as usual the Gaus’ got it done as they finished 1and 2 for the day. Also finishing out the day in top spots was David Payne in his fantastic 911 Turbo and Rick Nagel in his recently purchased SCCA PAX winning 968.

Throughout the day we saw times continue to drop and smiles get bigger and bigger.

After the event I was approached by a gentleman who said he was a newer member and this was his first event. His only question, “Are all ARPCA events this fun?”

If you haven’t made it to an ARPCA social event, Autocross, or DE what are you waiting for? You owe it to yourself to get into your P-Car come to an event and see what it’s all about.

Take a look at the calendar in the center spread of this issue for all of the ARPCA events coming up, but here’s a few AX dates not to miss:• PVGP Autocross School Hosted by Steel

Cities Region SCCA at PittRace July 12 or July 13

• Autocross on Sunday, August 10 at PittRace

• Wounded Warriors Benefit October 11-12 at PittRace

• Autocross on Saturday, October 18 at Greensburg Jeanette Regional Airport

Fall is getting closer….Here are a couple of up-dates:1. 2013 ARPCA Golf Outing

The Golf Outing was cancelled this year due to a lack of attendees. I am tentatively planning a 2014 version – to all who are interested, can you send me an email with your “ideal” golf outing requirements? I would love to hear your feedback – please send responses to the email below.

2. As ARPCA Members, can you help us get more advertising? Do you know some-one who would want to advertise in our newsletter and on our website? WE NEED YOUR HELP WITH ADVERTISERS!

For those of you thinking about it or think you know someone who would be interested in advertising / supporting this publication, we have added a block in the publication

with the current rates and contact information. The rates are very reasonable for the publica-tion demographics. In addition, if you are an ARPCA member, you also qualify for special pricing.

For those who support the Rundschau through advertising, we certainly appreciate it. Your support helps keep this publication go-ing.

Remember, we have a new item for the Rund-schau – an Advertiser’s Spotlight section. Our advertisers count on you to use their services – here is another way you can get to know our advertisers. Each month, we will showcase one of our advertisers – I think you will find this in-formative and helpful.

If you have any comments, potential advertis-ers, or suggestions, please send these to me: [email protected]

The Starks just wrapped up our 2nd ARPCA trip to the historically known racetrack, Watkins Glen. Taking a different approach from the start, we decided to leave a day earlier and enjoy the drive through the Allegheny National Forest with our 944 Turbo and 911 Targa. If you have yet to take this drive with the beautiful country sides and shaded tree lined roads, I highly recommend!

The weekend started off with a bang as we joined a few members of the ARPCA to do a full track walk of The Glen, led by professional racecar drivers, to really get the understanding of how the track was designed. Friday night was filled with dinner, live music and drinks at the Falls Motel Lounge, although we didn’t make it too late into the night as we all anticipated a full day of heart pounding adrenaline at track. We woke up to a beautiful morning to start our two day adventures. After the morning drivers meeting, changing tires to

slicks and being divided up in our run groups, it was time to hit the asphalt! Although being out on the track once before, the anticipation and excitement was a struggle to maintain. The morning sessions went as expected with early/ late apexes and slower lap times, but after the morning’s in-class room instruction and the confidence I had with my personal instructor, I knew I would be able to fine tune my “line”. As day one came to a close, I have to give great credit to the event staff and PCA driving instructors for their guidance and effort of making it fun and efficient. As the sun went down and due to the mental/ physical exhaustion of racing, it seemed our bedtime came sooner rather than later.

Being truly blessed, Sunday (happy mother’s day, mom) turned out to be another gorgeous day at The Glen. Without doubt the lap times were coming down due to the consistence guidance from the instructors and my confidence level had increased to where I could wrap up my last two sessions as a solo driver. For how much my father and I do together, there is nothing close to comparison with the ARPCA events. If you have yet to try a PDE day, or an autocross, I would please ask that you add it to your calendars! I’d feel really bad for yourself, but also your well designed German beauty sitting in your garage if you don’t give it the opportunity to really see what it was built for.
