FROM FATHER CHUCK

We are on week three of reopening and I am still patiently (or not!) waiting for this arbitrary number of 50 to be lifted so that we can at least accommodate a proper number in our church, with appropriate distancing. At the time I am writing this, it has not yet happened. Last weekend the 9:30 AM & 6:00 PM Masses reached the 50 limit. While we did have more people compared to the week before, overall, we still had seating available at most of the Masses. Remember that are live streaming the Mass at 9:30 AM & 6:30 PM in Spanish on Sundays, especially for the sake of all those who are seniors or who otherwise are staying home because they would be compro-mised in their health by the novel coronavirus if contracted.

I want to, again, thank the teams who are doing the cleaning after each Mass. It doesn’t take a lot of time but, is still a bit back breaking to go from pew to pew. We still could use people at most of the Masses to help with the cleaning. If you are under 65 and have no compromising health issues, please contact me by phone or email to let me know you can help and which Mass you normally attend or if you’re flexible on the Mass time. Thanks!

I think there is a need for me to reiterate why we are asking those coming to Mass or other service in the church to submit their names and contact info. We do this solely to have a way to contact you if someone at the Mass you attended later tests positive with COVID-19. Having a way for this contact tracing is highly recommended by the medical experts & our coun-ty health department. This information will not be released to anyone unless someone contracts the virus and we need to notify you. The information will be shredded after four weeks. It would be extremely helpful, and save time at the door, if you would COME TO MASS WITH YOUR NAME AND BEST CONTACT (PHONE OR EMAIL) WRITTEN OUT ALREADY ON A PIECE OF PAPER OR INDEX CARD; THEN JUST DROP IT IN THE BOX AS YOU ENTER. As I mentioned previously, if you are using your offertory envelopes, write your phone number or email address and you can skip that box and simply place your envelope in the offertory basket. Thanks very much, everyone, for your cooperation and support on this & on all the precautions we’re taking so to keep one another as safe as possible. Remember, it is an act of charity to consider the needs of others. Even if you feel perfectly safe or willing to take a risk, it is for the good of others and the desire not to spread a virus that could be deadly to others that we are doing what we do. History and experience show the effectiveness of what we are doing.

Fr. Lucio is on vacation visiting his family for a couple of weeks. He had to bump his visit a couple of times due to travel restrictions, so needless to say, he was very happy finally to be go-ing. I’m grateful to Fr. Tony Vercellone & Fr. Norm King, both retired priests of our diocese, who are helping with Masses in Fr. Lucio’s absence. Fr. Tony & Fr. Norm are a tremendous help with their willingness to assist in our area parishes. However, since both are older, they will not be dis-tributing Communion to the assembly so as not to put themselves at any greater risk. Please keep them in prayer and, if you get the opportunity, give them a word of thanks. Also, please say a prayer for Fr. Lucio and his family and for his safe return at the end of next week.

Last weekend we prayed for the parish of Corpus Christi in Carson City because it was the Solemnity of the Most Holy Body and Blood of Christ. Corpus Christi was established in 1949 in what was known as the Stewart Washoe Indian Colony in order to serve the indigenous people of that community. The parish rented the land from the Washoe Tribe under a long-term lease. Over the decades changes to the Stewart community happened and additional growth in the area brought other peoples and cultures to the parish. For many years the Pallotine Fathers, a mis-sionary community from Ireland, staffed Corpus Christi. Diocesan priests in more recent times have pastored the parish, including Fr. Ariel Arias, now retired, and, their current, long-time pas-tor, Fr. Jim Setelik. The tiny, stone church eventually became too small for the community. It was under Fr. Jim, in the first decade of the 2000’s, that the parish decided to relocate south, just across the Douglas County line and a new multi-purpose building with church, hall and offices, was erected.

On Friday we celebrated the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, hence we lift up in prayer this weekend Sacred Heart Parish in Carlin & Sacred Heart Mission in McDermitt, NV. Sacred Heart in Carlin, just 30 miles west of Elko, was established in 1862, before Nevada was officially a state. Carlin was an important railroad town in those days with a population of about 12,000. The original church served the community for over a hundred years. In 1978 the church was sold, and a new church was built at the current location. Over the years the economy shifted to mining but the town has continued to decrease in population, which is now under 2,000. While the parish still maintains its status, it no longer has a resident pastor but is administered by the pastor and priests from Saint Joseph Catholic Church in Elko, who currently celebrate Mass and meet the sacramental needs of the people of Carlin. Our other faith community bearing the name of the Sacred Heart in the Diocese of Reno is the mission in McDermitt, a small town with about 500 residents, that straddles the Nevada & Oregon border. Sacred Heart Mission does not have the status of a parish but is served by the pastor at Saint Paul Church in Winnemucca. Let us pray for our sister communities of faith in our diocese and for the priests and lay ministers who serve them. BLESSINGS TO YOU ALL THIS 12TH WEEK IN ORDINARY TIME!

THE SACRED HEART OF JESUS In Catholic churches and homes, one of the most popular images of Jesus is the image of the Sacred Heart of Je-

sus. It is the image of God’s love revealed in the pierced heart of His Son. It is the symbol of a love that conquers sin and transcends death, the symbol of the One who loved us to the end.

Love has always been associated with the heart, so it was only natural that the love of God became represented by a heart, the heart of his Son Jesus. In him, God the Father revealed his infinite love for us. On the Friday after the So-lemnity of Corpus Christi, the Church celebrates the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus. The Church was born from the pierced heart of Jesus on the cross. In the first creation, Eve was born from the side of Adam. In the new creation, the Church was born from the side of Jesus. The Bride from the Heart of the Bridegroom! When the soldier thrust his lance into Jesus’ side, immediately blood and water flowed out. St. John Chrysostom had this to say about this passage: “Beloved, do not pass over this mystery without thought; it has yet another hidden meaning, which I’ll explain to you. I said that water and blood symbolized Baptism and the Holy Eucharist. From these two sacraments the Church is born: from Baptism, the cleansing water that gives rebirth and renewal through the Holy Spirit, and from the Eucharist. Since the symbols of Baptism and the Eucharist flowed from his side, it was from his side that Christ fashioned the Church, as he had fashioned Eve from the side of Adam … As God took a rib from Adam’s side to fashion a woman, so Christ has given us blood and water from his side to fashion the Church. God took the rib when Adam was in a deep sleep, and in the same way Christ gave us the blood and the water after his own death.”

Since the Church was born from the pierced side of Christ, from his Sacred Heart, this should have great meaning for us. In prayer, we contemplate the pierced Heart of our Savior. We contemplate his incredible love. We reflect on the mercy, compassion and love that God has bestowed upon us. We become enthralled by Christ, like St. Paul, who prayed that Christ might dwell in the hearts of the Ephesian Christians through faith and that they might know the love of Christ which surpasses knowledge. When Christ dwells in our hearts, when we know his love deeply, in our minds and hearts, we are moved to live the great commandments of love of God and neighbor. We’re motivated by the Sacred Heart of Jesus to open our hearts to him so that they are filled with love for our brothers and sisters. In this way, we learn to live Jesus’ commandment: Love one another as I have loved you.

The Church, born from the pierced heart of Jesus, has a mission in the world to proclaim the redeeming love of God in Christ. This is a great mission. There are many systems of thought and action which seek to construct the human world on the basis of wealth, power, force, science or pleasure. But that’s not the Christian system. Our mission, our work, is to proclaim love, salvation, redemption, eternal life. The Sacred Heart of Jesus is precisely the image that ex-presses our mission. It is the image of the infinite and merciful love which the heavenly Father has poured out upon the world through his Son. The goal of all we do in the Church should be to lead people to encounter this love. Only the love of the Heart of Christ, can transform the human heart and bring true peace to the world.

In our lives and in our work in the Church, we must place all our hope in the One who said Come to me, all you who labor and are burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am meek and humble of heart. This is one of the most beautiful scriptural references to the heart of Jesus. His heart, the symbol of his re-deeming love, is also a symbol of his meekness and humility. Jesus invites us to learn from his heart and to imitate his love, his meekness, and his humility. This aspect of devotion to the Sacred Heart is evident in the common prayer or invocation: Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto thine.

The month of June is a month when this devotion is practiced more intensely. Some wonderful practices include praying the Litany of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, making a consecration to the Sacred Heart or having the image of the Sacred Heart enthroned in your home. These devotions are not just some relics of the past. They have continued rele-vance today. When we draw close to Christ in the mystery of his heart, this enables us to dwell on the great mystery of our faith, that God is love. This also strengthens us and inspires us to imitate his love and to help build the civilization of love. From the Sacred Heart of Jesus, our hearts learn meekness, humility, mercy, and love.

Devotion to the Sacred Heart of Jesus is profoundly Eucharistic. It finds its summit at Mass where we lift up our hearts to the Lord. We unite our hearts with the Sacred Heart of Jesus in the offering of the Eucharistic Sacrifice. At Mass, we are nourished at the Paschal banquet of our Redeemer’s Body and Blood. The Eucharist is the sacrament of charity. It is a school of love where we are educated by Jesus. The Eucharist has been called “the outstanding gift of the Heart of Jesus”, the Heart that gives life to the Church and to all of us, her members.

YOU ARE WORTH MORE THAN MANY SPARROWS Sometimes we look for very complex answers when a simple promise or solution is right in front of us. As I am writing and looking out the window, I see half a dozen little birds sitting in a bush. Their presence is a reminder to me of God’s love and care for each and every one of us. If some-thing that seems so insignificant or incidental is known by God, how much more are we loved and cared for! Take a moment, look at the world around you, breathe, take it in, and ask God for the help you need. Turn matters over and place your trust in a loving God. Remember, though, Jesus seldom heals without some sort of action on our part. When you have given your concern over to God, other concrete steps may be necessary. Is it time to schedule an appointment with a profes-sional? Time to name an issue? Or time for the sacrament of reconciliation? Evil’s power comes from remaining in the darkness. When we no longer close ourselves off or suffer alone but share our concerns with someone, we can begin to grow and heal and move past them. It is seldom magical or instantaneous. It is a long arduous process. But we hold on to the simple reminder, “You are worth more than many sparrows!” —Copyright © J. S. Paluch Co., Inc.
