Recently, someone asked me about a devotion called the Stations of the Resurrection. The Stations of the Resur-rection, also called the Via Lucis, is a fairly new practice that is modeled on the Stations of the Cross. The Via Lucis is a response to a concern that sometimes gets raised about the Stations of the Cross. Some find it prob-lematic that the last of the fourteen standard Stations of the Cross is the burial of Jesus. It’s a logical end to a meditation on the Passion of Jesus, but it does leave the second part of the story untold. If everything ended at the tomb, we wouldn’t have Christianity. Mary Magdalene and her companions would have anointed a corpse. Peter would have gone back to fishing. Matthew might have found another job collecting taxes. But the tomb isn’t the real end. That is why some versions of the Stations of the Cross now add a fifteenth station, the Resurrection, to remind us that the tomb was not the end. In 1988, a professor at Salesian University in Rome suggested that we could pray fourteen Stations of the Resurrection in the same way that we pray fourteen Stations of the Cross. This would be a Way of Light, a Via Lucis, which could be a counterpart to Lent’s Via Crucis. There are not yet fourteen generally agreed-upon stations, but most versions of the Via Lucis began at the tomb with the Resurrection. There are stations for Jesus encountering Mary Magdalene, for his meeting with the disci-ples traveling to Emmaus, for his encounter with Thomas, for his discussion with Peter, and for the Ascen-sion. The final station, in many versions, is Pentecost, when the Holy Spirit promised by Jesus descended on the disciples. The Via Lucis began, as many devotional practices do, on a grassroots level. Faithful Catholics found a way of praying that spoke to their hearts. In 2001, the Holy See promulgated the Directory on Popular Piety and the Lit-urgy, a large set of instructions on devotional practices. The Stations of the Resurrection are too new for the Di-rectory to comment on them extensively, but the Holy See seems to approve of the idea. “The Via Lucis,” says the Directory, “when celebrated in fidelity to the Gospel text, can convey a living understanding to the faithful of the second moment of the Paschal event, namely, the Lord’s Resurrection.” Personally, I have never prayed the Via Lucis. But as we close out the Easter season, it may be a good devotion

to consider adding to our spiritual life.
