Pope Francis calls each of us to witness to charity and to show God's mercy to one another. He encourages us to "open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help!" (Misericordiae Vultus [MV], no. 15). The Peter's Pence Collection unites us in solidarity to the Holy See and its works of charity to those in need. Your generosity allows the Pope to respond to our suffering brothers and sisters.

The Galatians to whom the letter is addressed were Paul's converts, most likely among the descendants of Celts who had invaded western and central Asia Minor in the third century B.C. and had settled in the territory around Ancyra (modern Ankara, Turkey). Paul had passed through this area on his second missionary journey (Acts 16:6) and again on his third (Acts 18:23).

The Second Reading begins with the opening verse from Galatians 5 and then skips to the middle section of the same chapter. The first words of the reading could easily be a rallying cry for the Apostle Paul’s message. Christ set the Galatians free, and intends that they live in that freedom. The Galatians, however, are struggling with this freedom. Under the influence of other missionaries who told the people to adhere to the Mosaic Law, which Paul is calling a “yoke of slavery,” some Galatians have been unable to stand firm in the freedom Christ offers.

Paul then instructs the Galatians on how to live in the freedom of Christ. The life of freedom entails following the great commandment to love your neighbor as yourself. It does not condone continuing to denigrate those who think, act, or live differently because of the desire to inflate your own ego; rather as Paul tells the Galatians and us in the final section, this new life asks nothing short of living by the Spirit. The Spirit transforms the flesh so that we do not indulge its desires, which are in opposition to the Spirit. These desires include giving the Law more authority than the Spirit’s power. Thus, the message of the today’s reading is that our freedom in Christ is freedom in the Spirit to live in love of one another.

Freedom in Christ (taken from Commentary On Today’s Second Reading)

Volunteer Opportunities / The Sacristan Ministry Currently, we have one coordinator that oversees the following three ministries.

The need is to find a new coordinator. This ministry can be separated to have a coordinator for each - Setup Sacristans, Sanctuary Attendants & Laundry

Sacristans - or keep this ministry together with one coordinator. Any suggestions are welcome. If this is something that you think you could help with, please call the Parish Office 408-296-3000.
