The shock: “Austria will leave CERN”

• Announced by secretary of science on May 7

• No prior consultation …

• Austrian physical society reacted very quickly

• Two clusters:– Theoreticians at the Vienna

University of Technology– Our institute (HEPHY)

• Aim: To provide public with accurate information (costs, gains, …)

AUSTRIA WILL REMAIN PART OF CERN

• We did not let the discussion become personal• But still, we were quite happy when on the 11th day…

• Our conclusion:– Fast and decisive action helped organize public opinion– There had been no “hierarchy” – only cooperation!– Strong support from other scientific fields!– Spin-offs (medicine technology) resonated with the public

• For this purpose, we will now use the material of our LHC2008 exhibition, plus additions (like Belle)

• “Long night of science”– Many groups of all fields presented

themselves throughout Austria

• ACCORD: Austrian Educational Cooperation for a COsmic Ray Detector

– Investigation of high energy cosmic radiation by pupils– First module is almost finished– Schools will participate starting in Fall 2009– Perhaps support by students of the University of Technology Vienna during the summer
