Designers are pretty unanimous in saying that mouldings have become as important as paint, furniture fabric, and accessories. Forget the idea that they are the reserve of old-fashioned rooms; according to decorators, mouldings are now a part of modern, original interiors.

These days, manufacturers are offering a broader variety of deco-rative mouldings in different types of wood and in MDF (wood fi bre), both of which can be installed easily by home owners. Although the trend is towards outsize mouldings, balance is essential. For example, in a 10’ x 10’ room, a crown moulding of 3 1/2” will fi nish the room perfectly. If the room is substan-tially bigger, a larger crown moulding would be more suitable. Mouldings can also be used to lower a wall that appears too high

by placing the strips about 6” from the ceiling.

If you decide to do the work yourself, let the mouldings acclima-tize for a day or two in the room where they’ll be installed. For hardwood mouldings, it is advisable to drill the holes in them before installation in order to avoid cracking, particularly if you are using a hammer instead of a compressor.

THE ADVANTAGE OF CROWN MOULDINGInstalling a crown moulding adds a decorative element and will also help you save both time and money: it means not having to plaster joints in the corners of ceilings!

If the return of fall means you begin to yearn for faraway climates where the weather is always warm, try bringing the essence of those places into your home décor. Wicker, bamboo, and rattan, to the rescue! They can help you incorporate a touch of the exotic into a room at little cost.

Rattan is a great material for manufac-turing furniture; when steamed it can be bent into beautiful shapes. Shaping rattan is a hand-made process, one that is very labour intensive. Wicker is the name given to the finished product composed

of woven rattan or other similar materi-als. Wicker is usually associated with a romantic style of decor because of the way the slats are shaped into lattice work or rosettes.

Bamboo has a bigger diameter than rattan, making it impossible to bend. This mate-rial is used to make all kinds of household furnishings, including chair backs and par-titions. Bamboo fi bre is even used in mak-ing cloth material. Because bamboo is very strong, it is also an excellent choice for fl ooring. Floors made from bamboo slats have an excellent stability, as the material is sealed on all sides and reacts little to variations in humidity.

Furniture made from rattan and bamboo is easy to maintain. Just be sure it is well varnished and dusted regularly, especially in joints where dust tends to accumulate.

A dash of the exotic

A very strong material, bamboo is all the rage.

You’d like your child to have a desk in his or her room, but there’s nary an inch of space to spare? Don’t worry! You can transform a bedroom closet by removing the door, installing a fl at working surface inside, and putting up a few shelves. Add a chair and a reading light and you’re all set.

Even if you don’t need a desk, the storage space in a child’s closet is often underuti-lized and can be put to other uses. Because kids’ clothes are short, you can lower the hanger rod, giving you enough room to install shelves for extra storage space for toys or for off-season clothes belonging to the rest of the family.

If your linen closet is always in a mess,

here are a few tips to help you solve the problem. Organize the closet, storing arti-cles according to their use (bed linens, tow-els, tablecloths, etc.), then by room (master bedroom, bathroom, etc.). Put a label on each shelf with the name of the person they are used by. You could also allocate a colour to each member of the family: candy pink for mom, crimson red for dad. It makes putting away clean laundry easy and everyone will always know where their towels and bedding are.

To un-clutter a front hall, put in a coat rack stand and a large pot in which to store umbrellas. Just a few such touches will result in a more inviting atmosphere and a tidier home!

Sometimes, all it takes is a bit of creativity to breathe new life

tive strips that form a frame around the whole.

To make a room look bigger, think about highlighting a window

by accentuating its actual size. Install curtain rod supports about

twelve inches beyond the edges of your window frame and as

close as possible to the ceiling. When the curtains are pushed

aside for daytime, they won’t be hiding any window at all.

Restoring objects that are kicking around your home can be

like child’s play. With inexpensive fabrics in daring prints, you

can spice up cushions, armchairs, and curtains. The skilful use

of fabrics and paint to create an entrancing living space proves

that a small investment in time and money can result in a huge

change in comfort and style.
