You also call women to embrace a religious community and in doing so, to serve Your Church in love and charity. Send forth Your Holy Spirit and open their hearts to Your call and give these men and women the courage to give their lives completely to Jesus Christ. Be their rock of refuge and their light as they discern. Help us to support them on their journey, and to love them as His disci-ples. Give them the grace to guide the Church to follow Christ more closely. We ask you this in the name of Jesus Christ, the High Priest who intercedes for us before Your heavenly throne. Amen.

Loving God, as Your Son hung upon the cross, He entrusted His Disciples to the tender care of His mother and thus formed from His own suffering a family of faith for all those who believe in Him. Help us now to embrace one another as brothers and sisters and strengthen the family Christ has called us to be. In the midst of our sadness, may we find comfort in the Virgin Mother’s arms. May we walk together to encounter the risen Christ in our hearts and in one another. And may the Holy Spirit unite us as we give witness to You, our God and Father, through Christ our Lord. Amen

MERCY’S MEASURE “She’s Not Dead”

In my worst moments of despair, I think about how many parishes are closing, how collections have dropped, how attendance is still low, how little enthusiasm I find among the parishioners, how hard it is to get volunteers, and I am tempted to think that the Church is dying. It is pretty clear in our society that faith and the Church are not respected by many people. Politicians forego their own religious beliefs to pander to a wider audience and too many pretentious preachers use religious belief as a way to divide people or attack others. Even worse, as long as some leader panders to the right audience on issues of abortion or “law and order,” their own hypocritical and abominable lives of adultery, lying and stealing are completely overlooked! It is easy to despair when I think of these things. But the Church is not dead and neither is Faith, as you and I can both attest. No, Faith is very much alive for those who put their trust in Jesus Christ and not in preachers or pundits or political movements. Renew My Church is not about healing a dying Church; it is about waking up a living Faith: a Faith that is active both in prayer and in works; in generosity and in mercy. Renew My Church is not about closing parishes, but about forming new communities that can give witness to Christ in our neighborhoods. Today’s Gospel shows us two ways that Renew My Church is the call of a Church that is very much alive. Embedded within the story of the healing of Jairus’ daughter (the synagogue official), we find the story of the healing of a woman who suffered 12 years with a bleeding hemorrhage. This is one of those Gospel stories that is repeated by both Matthew and Luke which tells us that it is central to the ministry of Jesus. Let’s start with her story. The woman has been bleeding for 12 years. Hearing about Jesus, she decides to take from him the healing she could not find elsewhere. Now this is where I am going to say bluntly that there are many people who use the Church and faith only when they want something. They take from God, but never give any offering in thanksgiving. Jesus knows someone has been healed and will not move on until she admits what she has done. Jesus is not out to condemn her, but to help her realize the importance of a living faith. In the same way, we must turn around and look at our brothers and sisters, our friends and neighbors and remind them that they, too, have been blessed by God. And they need to admit their blessings; practice their faith! When the Church gives charity, educates, or helps someone, we do it not out of a sense of goodness, but with the clear intention of bringing that person closer to Christ. When I had a school, I told the non-Catholic parents quite clearly: they may be sending their children for a good education, but the only reason I ran that school was to bring souls to Christ. Without this clarity, we are just another charitable organization! Now to the little girl who is the focus of our story. Fathers and mothers everywhere are pleading for their children who are spiritually dying because they have been taught not to believe in God or religion. The violence and selfishness we encounter every day is a sign of our dying society. While many “mourn” the violence, only some trust that God can heal us. Renew My Church tells us to not despair, but to awaken our children to God’s love and to feed them with the strength of our own faith. Peace,

LA MEDIDA DE LA MERCED “No Está Muerta”

En mis peores momentos de desesperación, pienso en cuántas parroquias están cerrando, que tanto han bajado las colectas, que tanto la asistencia a Misa sigue bajando, el poco entusiasmo que encuentro entre los feligreses, lo difícil que es conseguir voluntarios, y me siento tentado a pensar que la Iglesia se está muriendo. Está bastante claro en nuestra sociedad que la fe y la Iglesia no son respetadas por muchas personas. Los políticos renuncian a sus propias creencias religiosas para complacer a una audiencia más amplia y demasiados predicadores pretenciosos utilizan las creencias religiosas como una forma de dividir a la gente o atacar a otros. Peor aún, mientras algún líder complace a la audiencia apropiada en temas de aborto o “ley y orden”, ¡sus propias vidas hipócritas y abominables de adulterio, mentira y robo se pasan por alto por completo! Es fácil desesperarse cuando pienso en estas cosas. Pero la Iglesia no está muerta y tampoco la Fe, como usted y yo podemos atestiguar. No, la Fe está muy viva para aquellos que ponen su confianza en Jesucristo y no en predicadores o expertos o movimientos políticos. Renueva Mi Iglesia no habla ni de sanar a una Iglesia moribunda ni de despertar una Fe viva: habla de una Fe que es activa tanto en la oración como en las obras; en la generosidad y en la misericordia. Renueva Mi Iglesia no habla de cerrar parroquias, sino de formar nuevas comunidades que puedan dar testimonio de Cristo en nuestros vecindarios. El Evangelio de hoy nos muestra dos maneras en cómo Renueva Mi Iglesia es el llamado de una Iglesia que está muy viva. Incrustado dentro de la historia de la sanación de la hija de Jairo (uno de los jefes de la sinagoga), encontramos la historia de la sanación de una mujer que padecía flujo de sangre desde hacía 12 años. Esta es una de esas historias del Evangelio que es repetida tanto por Mateo como por Lucas la cual nos dice cual es la misión fundamental del ministerio de Jesús. Comencemos a ver su historia. La mujer ha estado sangrando durante 12 años. Al oír hablar de Jesús, ella decide tomar de él la sanación que no pudo encontrar en otro lugar. Ahora bien, aquí es donde iré directo al punto hablando de muchas personas que utilizan la Iglesia y la fe a su propia conveniencia. Toman de Dios, pero nunca dan ninguna ofrenda en acción de gracias. Jesús sabe que alguien ha sido sanado y no seguirá adelante hasta que ese alguien admita lo que ha hecho. Jesús no está para condenarla, sino para ayudarla a darse cuenta de la importancia de una fe viva. De la misma manera, debemos darnos la vuelta y mirar a nuestros hermanos y hermanas, nuestros amigos y vecinos y recordarles que ellos también han sido bendecidos por Dios. Y necesitan admitir sus bendiciones; ¡practicar su fe! Cuando la Iglesia da caridad, educa o ayuda a alguien, no lo hacemos por un sentido de bondad, sino con la clara intención de acercar a esa persona a Cristo. Cuando administré una escuela, les dije a los padres no católicos con bastante claridad: pueden estar enviando a sus hijos para una buena educación, pero la única razón por la que administré esa escuela fue para traer almas a Cristo. Sin esta claridad, ¡somos solo otra entidad caritativa! Ahora hablamos de la niña que es el enfoque de nuestra historia. Los padres y madres de todo el mundo están suplicando por sus hijos que están muriendo espiritualmente porque se les ha enseñado a no creer ni en Dios ni en la religión. La violencia y el egoísmo que encontramos todos los días es un signo de nuestra sociedad moribunda. Mientras muchos “lloran” la violencia, sólo algunos confían en que Dios puede sanarnos. Renueva Mi Iglesia nos dice que no nos desesperemos, sino que despertemos a nuestros hijos al amor de Dios y los alimentemos con la fuerza de nuestra propia fe.

La liturgia, por su propia definición, es el pueblo orando jun-tos. A diferencia de las devociones, las liturgias, especialmente la Misa (o liturgias eucarísticas) son momentos en que la oración común, las palabras comunes son importantes. En la liturgia, cada participante tiene su propia parte: uno puede leer la Palabra de Dios, otro puede ayudar a recoger las ofrendas, otro responde a la invitación a orar por invitación del sacerdote o diácono. Según el Concilio Vaticano II, la Eucaristía es “la fuente y cumbre de la vida cristiana”. Como la “fuente”, la Eucaristía nos inspira a unir nuestras vidas a Cristo, a abrazar la misión de Cristo de evangelizar el mundo y de llevar a Cristo a los demás. Como la “cumbre”, la Eucaristía es la forma más elevada de alabanza que podemos dar a Dios, el momento en que estamos más cerca de Dios mientras estamos vivos, y el tesoro más pre-cioso entre todos nuestros dones espirituales y bendiciones. La Eucaristía es Cristo verdaderamente presente en forma de pan y vino, el Hijo de Dios viene a nosotros en una manifestación física. El Prólogo en el Evangelio de Juan nos recuerda que “todas las cosas llegaron a ser a través de Él y sin Él, nada llegó a ser”. El Hijo de Dios es la fuente de toda vida; así, la Eucaristía es también la fuente de vida cristiana. En el Evangelio de Mateo (28,18), Jesús dice, “todo poder en el cielo y en la tierra me ha sido dado”. Por lo tanto, Él es también la cumbre de nuestras vi-das, ya que Él preparará un lugar donde vivamos para siempre. (Jn 14,2-3) La Liturgia Eucarística no es la adoración de Jesús, como algunas personas piensan. No es una repetición de la Última Cena como otros creen erróneamente. Jesús no “se sacrifica de nuevo” durante la Misa. Más bien, la Eucaristía es la liturgia donde esta-mos unidos a la Pasión de Cristo, donde el tiempo y el espacio se abren para que podamos estar con el Señor y todos Sus discípulos de manera como Él se ofrece como propiciación de nuestros pe-cados. Pero la Eucaristía requiere nuestra plena participación, tal como los Apóstoles participaron en la Última Cena. Nosotros también debemos tomar el pan que se ha convertido en el Cuerpo de Cristo y comerlo; nosotros también debemos beber el vino que se ha convertido en la Sangre de Cristo. Adorar a la Eucaristía es consumir lo que se nos da. No se limite a sostenerlo, o levantarlo, o arrodillarse ante ella como si usted fuese indigno. No, escuche a Jesús: tomen y coman. ¡Así es como debemos adorar la Eucaristía!

Liturgy, by its very definition, is the people praying together. Unlike devotions, liturgies, especially Mass (or Eucharistic liturgies) are times when common prayer, common words are important. In liturgy, each participant has her own part: one may read the Word of God, another may help collect the offerings, another responds to the invitation to pray extended by the priest or deacon. According to the Second Vatican Council, the Eucharist is “the source and summit of the Christian life.” As the “source,” the Eucharist inspires us to unite our lives to Christ, to embrace Christ’s mission to evangelize the world, and to bring Christ to others. As the “summit,” the Eucharist is the highest form of praise we can give to God, the moment when we are closest to God while alive, and the most precious treasure among all our spiritual gifts and blessings. The Eucharist is Christ truly present in the form of bread and wine, the Son of God come to us in a physical manifestation. The Prologue in John’s Gospel reminds us that “all things came to be through Him and without Him, nothing came to be.” The Son of God is the source of all life; thus, the Eucharist is also the Christian life. In Matthew’s Gospel (28:18), Jesus says, “all power in heaven and earth has been given to me.” Thus, He is also the summit of our lives for He will prepare a place for us to live forever. (Jn 14:2-3) The Eucharistic Liturgy is not the worship of Jesus, as some people think. It is not a repetition of the Last Supper as others mistakenly believe. Jesus does not “sacrifice Himself again” during the Mass. Rather, the Eucharist is the liturgy where we are joined to Christ’s Passion, where time and space are broken open so that we may be with the Lord and all His disciples as He offers forever Himself in forgiveness of our sins. But the Eucharist requires our full participation, just as the Apostles participated at the Last Supper. We, too, must take the bread that has become Christ’s Body and eat it; we, too, must drink the wine which has become Christ’s Blood. To worship the

Eucharist is to consume what is given to us. Do not simply hold it, or raise it up, or kneel before it as if you are unworthy. No, listen to Jesus: take and eat. That is how we worship the Eucharist!

We would like to encourage families to pray for vocations to the priesthood and religious life and to ask their children if they have an interest in learning more about a reli-gious vocation. Each week, a family at Mass will be

invited to take home the “Vocation Chalice and Paten” which comes from Jerusalem. Each day, we ask the family to say a special vocations prayer, to pray for our priests, our deacons, the religious sisters, and mission-aries like Father Zacharias in Tanzania. If you are interested in bringing the Vocation Chalice and Paten to your home, please call the Rectory for more information.

With the start of Restore Illinois Phase 5 which began on June 11, here are some guidelines that will remain and take effect here @OLM: No reservations required to attend Mass. Capacity restrictions are lifted. All ministers must be vaccinated or they won’t be able to

serve. Holy Communion will still be given in the hand. Unvaccinated people should maintain social distance of 6ft.

Invitamos a todo feligrés que asiste a Misa regularmente a registrarse como miembro de la parroquia. Registrarse es importante para usted y para nosotros. Para usted, registrarse como miembro significa que usted tiene una familia parroquial un lugar donde su voz y sus oraciones son escuchadas. Si se le pide ser un padrino o madrina, si usted necesita una carta de apoyo o de referencia para inmigración, si tiene una entrevista de trabajo o una aplicación de la Universidad, éstas cartas sólo se pueden escribir para feligreses registrados atestiguando la frecuencia o cuán bien la persona practica su fe.
