European Mineral Processing & Recycling Conference 2018 2

GDMB Society of Metallurgists and Miners The GDMB is a non-profit organization. Its activities focus on combining science with practical experience in the fields of mining, engineering, tunnelling, mineral processing, extraction, recycling and refining of metals, as well as on the manufacturing of semi and finished products. There is an increasing emphasis on associated environmental issues. The GDMB is active internationally with a European basis and covers a wide variety of topics from applied geology via processing to recy-cling. These include many important areas of chemistry, especially the complex metallurgical chemistry and, last not least, also analytical chemistry. As a consequence of their increasing im-portance, aspects of industrial minerals are addressed in addition to the traditional fields of metals and alloys. In order to remain a vibrant and attractive professional society, the GDMB draws on the experience and interests of its worldwide members.

European Mineral Processing & Recycling Conference 2018 4

Welcome to EMPRC 2018 in Essen We are proud to invite you to the first EMPRC – European Mineral Processing and Recycling Congress. It will take place in Essen.

The EMPRC focuses on physical and physico-chemical processing of primary and secondary raw materials and will complement the Europe-an Metallurgical Conference (EMC) which took place from June 25 – 28, 2017. The aim of the conference is to gather professionals from industry, universities and research institutions to exchange, analyze and discuss the most recent innovations and developments of our industry.

EMPRC reflects Europe’s increasing interest to secure its raw material supply, to save resources and the environment. Reasons for this development are, among others, highly volatile metal prices within the last decade, formation of monopolies and oligopolies for so-me raw materials, state run raw material policies of some big producers, high pace of technology development as well as political uncertainties. As Europe’s situation is characterized on the one hand by large industrial output and therefore high raw material consumption, and on the other hand by a limited number of own deposits, the import dependency is generally high. Therefore, besides the processing of primary raw materials, the conference will also focus on the processing of se-condary raw materials and the associated specific challenges.

Young Scientist’s Paper Award 2018 The GDMB “Young Scientist’s Paper Award” was conferred for the very first time at the EMC / Pb-Zn 2015.

The “Young Scientist’s Paper Award” will be presented to students, young engineers or scientists for outstanding papers which contribute to future developments in the field of raw materials industry.

The candidates must not be older than 30 years of age. The criteria, on which the selection of the winner is based, are the following:

the scientific significance for the raw materials industry the possibility of practical implementation the future prospects for the research results and the professionalism of the presentation.

Every participant at the conference is entitled to vote. Paper ballots will be handed out together with the conference documentation, on which one favourite can be selected.

The winner will be announced in the 5/2018 edition of World of Mining. The presentation will also be printed in this edition in the form of an article along with a brief introduction of the award win-ner.

The prize will be the complete assumption of participation costs for the next EMPRC, including the fees for the evening programme. At this event, the prize winner will have the opportunity to thank the plenum and to address the conferment of the next award.

In addition, the winner will receive a free two-year GDMB membership.

This kind of award corresponds to the consistent implementation of the GDMB slogan “We support the future’s resources”, by integrating young academics into the existing network of experts of our society, and to help shape the research and industry in the field of minerals processing and recy-cling.

EMPRC 2018 banner presentation In conjunction with the European Mineral Processing and Recycling Congress, a banner presenta-tion will be organized. This provides an excellent opportunity for attendees/ delegates of the pro-cessing industry and delegates of equipment manufacturers/service suppliers to discuss potential solutions, to solve actual problems or further upgrading of plant components/equipment.

The banner presentation represents a volatile market place for communication of technical staff, management, consulting experts, university delegates and an extension of the technical lectures to the real hardware or software related questions.

The EMPRC 2018 banner presentation will be held in the foyer of “Atlantic Congress Hotel Essen”, Norbertstraße 2a, 45131 Essen and will thus be readily accessible to the delegates.

EMPRC 2018 – Conference Sponsoring

Conference Sponsorship is a wise investment

A Sponsor’s direct support ensures corporate brand delivery to the industry. The participants of the EMPRC are decision-makers from industry, economy and science.

As there are limited sponsorship opportunities available on a “first-come, first-served”-basis, poten-tial sponsors are requested to act quickly. Given the current economic situation, a non-profit organization such as ours depends more than ever on support from the industry, in order to make this event another success for the global indus-try. We also regard this assistance as a positive reaction to our conference and as an acknowledge-ment of its importance to industry. We would like to ask you and your company to support the EMPRC. We would appreciate direct financial contributions. As we need the financial support for covering the costs incurred in the pre-paratory stage of the conference – the payment of registration fees is anticipated at a later date – we would appreciate an early receipt of your donation, if possible. You will receive an invoice for your support including the value added tax.

Essen Through the Ages Stagnation – a city like Essen doesn’t know the meaning of the word: it has already undergone far too many transformations. Its history begins circa 850 AD. This was the year when Altfrid, who later became Bishop of Hildesheim, founded a nunnery for ladies of the Saxon nobility. Its ministry and later, its power, can be seen in the Domschatzkammer (collection of cathedral treasure) today and the most famous exhibit: a golden Madonna that dates back more than 1,000 years and is the oldest three-dimensional representation of the Virgin Mary in the Western world.

Even in those times, the black gold that would ultimately make Essen one of the world’s most im-portant centres of the coal and steel industry was slumbering underground. The name ‘Krupp’ was inseparably linked to this. What began approximately 200 years ago in Altenessen during the year 1811 with Friedrich Krupp’s cast steel factory was transformed by his son Alfred into the largest steel corporation of the 19th century. Coal and steel made Essen into a major city but even this era didn’t last forever. By the time the Zeche Zollverein, the ‘most beautiful colliery in the world’ closed in the year 1986, at the very latest, it was time for a structural transformation. Essen not only became a modern service provider and economic metropolis but it also received the title ‘Cultural Capital of Europe 2010’ on behalf of the entire Ruhr region. The jury thereby acknowledged the gradual transformation of places where miners once went about their daily business into venues for art and culture. Symbol of this industrial culture is the tower of the Zeche Zollverein colliery which, along with its attached coking plant, was designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 2001. A further developmental step was taken with the designation of ‘Green Capital of Europe 2017’. The greenest city in North Rhine-Westphalia receives the title for good reason: former sewage canals are rivers teeming with life today and old factory railway tracks have been turned into well-developed cycle paths. But Essen, home to 580,000 people, is much more than this. It’s a shopping city, a university town and science city and also a trade fair and congress centre. And also in the future it will remain true to one thing: transformation. (Text: Ina Will, Photos: Peter Wieler; EMG – Essen Marketing GmbH)
