JUNE 23: THE MOST HOLY BODY AND BLOOD

OF CHRIST (Corpus Christi)

Readings: Gn 14:18-20/1 Cor 11:23-26/Lk 9:11b-17

In our gospel of the feeding of the five thousand,

there is an allusion to the Eucharist: Jesus looked up to heaven, said the blessing, broke the bread and fish, and gave them to the disciples. Today these are still the action of the priest as he confects the Eucharist. The line that struck me in today’s Gospel is that they all ate and were satisfied. The hungry will be filled. What are we hungering for? Do we desire to receive Jesus? The Lord longs to fill us, to fulfill our desire for him. Let us open our heart today and not be afraid to ask him to come to us and transform our lives.

Page 4: June 23, 2019 Holy Family Church

Note From the Pope,

Pope Francis continued his series on the biblical book, the Acts of the Apostles, explaining the 12 apostles' unity in prayer.

Pope Francis said their unity was a witness to their love and their union with the risen Lord. He prayed for unity today to overcome pride and divisiveness.

Dear brothers and sisters,

In our catechesis on the Acts of the Apostles, we have seen that the Church’s evangelizing mission begins with the resurrection of Christ. As the disciples, together with Mary, waited in the Upper Room for the fulfilment of Jesus’ promise of the Holy Spirit, they were united in prayer.

From the beginning, the Church appears as a communion, a community, the People of God. Christ’s choice of 12 apostles shows the continuity between the Church and the people of Israel. After the defection of Judas, the Apostles were conscious that his place in the 12 had to be taken by another. Guided by Peter, the community as a whole joined in prayer to discern the Lord’s choice of Matthias.

Jesus had told his disciples that they would be known by their love for one another (Jn 13:35). The visible communion of the Apostles was their first form of witness to the Risen Lord and his saving love. May we too bear witness to the reconciling power of that love by our unity, which triumphs over pride and divisiveness, and creates from diversity the one People of God.

Upon all of you I invoke the joy and peace of our Lord Jesus Christ. God bless you!

Note From the Pastor,

This saying good bye to all of you is not easy. Malone is more than two hours away, so getting here or there is a big deal. I have really been blessed to have been part of your journey of faith for these past many years. I have buried your parents, married you, baptized your children, anointed your loved ones and been overwhelmed by your faith. Six years ago when I celebrated my 25th anniversary and I spoke to my brother priest, I said much of what I want to say to all of you now. I sincerely thank each and everyone of you for your prayerful support. Any good I have been part of has been because I allowed the Holy Spirit to work through me. I really just got out of the way and let the Lord work through me. I am reminded of St. Paul’s words to us reflecting on Luke’s gospel “I am a worthless servant. I have done only what the Lord commanded”. I hope I have used those gift that the Lord has given me to proclaim well the Good New of Jesus Christ. I know I am not perfect and have from time to time done and said things which have upset some, so I sincerely apologize to anyone I have offended. Your patience and prayerful support has made me a better person and priest, so I thank you again for your encouragement and thoughtful advice over the years. Please continue to pray for me and those people I am called to serve. Know that I am praying for you and your new pastor, my much younger classmate Fr. Mickey Demo. He is a great person and a great priest and he won’t be me. He will bring his may wonderful gifts and talents to this great parish, and I know you will show him the same warm welcome you gave me so many years ago. God Bless You. Fr. Steve

CHURCH HISTORY CONTINUES

St. Patrick’s Church on South Massey Street in Watertown was completed in 1856 representing the Irish Catholics of the city. The French population stayed on Factory Street until Our Lady of the Sacred Heart Church on W. Lynde Street was built in 1878. Meanwhile, the population of Watertown was increasing due to our papermaking industry. The Diocese of Ogdensburg was established in 1872 and oversaw 65 churches, 38 with resident priests and 7 parochial schools. In 1895, a new parish was established to serve the eastern neighborhoods of the city. Father Michael R. Burns was appointed to the yet unnamed parish.

ROCKIN' IT FOR BILL BOAT CRUISE: The 2019 boat cruise will be held July 13th. The boat will depart from Alexandria Bay promptly at 7:00pm and will be returning at 10:00pm.
