Hunger Walk - Support Food Pantry at FirstBethlehem Request from Pastor James Kellerman, First BethlehemLutheran Church, Chicago

Once again I will be participating in the Greater Chicago FoodDepository's (GCFD) Hunger Walk on June 26. This is a greatopportunity for us to raise some funds for our food pantry at FirstBethlehem Lutheran Church in Chicago. We are able to get foodfor our pantry at a greatly discounted price through GCFD--usually we pay less than half of what it would cost us to buy theitems at a place like Aldi's. Thus, we have found the GCFD anexcellent organization to enhance our efforts to feed the hungry.

The nice thing about the Hunger Walk is that whatever funds weraise go completely into our account with the GCFD. Thus, yourdonation isn't going into a general operating fund for the GCFD,but will be credited directly to our account for whenever we buy groceries from them.

Thank you for your support and for getting the word out.

Lutheran Couple in Need of AssistanceRequest from Pastor Thomas Spahn, Interim PastorBethel Lutheran Church, Gurnee, IL

We are working with a member family that is indire need. They are a 58-year-old couple, married for 39 years, and are facing a financialcrisis. He lost his manufacturing highmanagement position 35 months ago and theyhave consumed all of their 401 retirementinvestments and stocks. In the past year he hadmajor reconstructive surgery for skin cancer.

Now they are on the verge of losing their home, unable to use their maxed out credit card, haveborrowed against their life insurance policies, arebehind on property taxes and have medical billsthat have gone to a collection agency. If hisminimal health insurance coverage is lost, he

may be uninsurable in the future.

They both eagerly serve on committees and boards of our congregation and volunteer

for many church-related activities. The congregation is helping the family in every waythat we can but their needs are greater than we can do alone. If anyone is moved todonate to help this family get back on their feet it would be a tremendous blessing forthem.

Homeless Family with Three Small Children inDesperate Need of Assistance!Requested by Rev. Michael Graham,Emmanuel Lutheran Church, Aurora, Illinois

This family has had financial difficulty for the past two years that Ihave known them. They moved from Joliet and are able to work onand off. A year ago the mother had fairly good and stableemployment, but was let go, and the father works construction jobswhen anything is available. Since last November they have beenhomeless and living in transitional housing at Hesed House, thelocal homeless shelter. The mother was pregnant at the time they moved into thehomeless shelter.

The baby was born April 6 with severe complications. She was rushed to LutheranGeneral for surgery and put into Neonatal Intensive Care. She has difficulty swallowingand her larynx collapses. She has to be tube fed.

Before the baby was released from the hospital, there was an outbreak of Tuberculosisat the homeless shelter and the county health department will not allow the baby backthere. It could be several months before this situation is cleared up.

Currently the father and two boys (ages 3 and 4) are staying at the shelter, but themother is with her mother but is not allowed to be there because of public housing rulesand also the grandmother has medical and emotional problems that make it undesirableand not adequate to care for the baby.

Immediate need:A place where the mother and baby can live temporarily, probably a few months at least,so she can care for the baby with her medical needs. Best would be a place where thehusband and two boys could also stay, that way the mother could care for the boys aswell when the father is able to work.

Long term need:Financial assistance to pay medical bills and expenses to allow them to move into anapartment.

This young family is in a desperate situation. Any help that can be given to them wouldbe such a blessing as they work to put their lives back together and move from beinghomeless.

If you know of any available temporary housing please call LCC at 866-455-6466 oremail [email protected]

Historic St. Matthew Makes An Urgent AppealRequest by Rev. Julio A. Loza, Historic St. Matthew LutheranChurch

Historic St. Matthew Lutheran Church, after 138 years of Christian servicein Chicago, faces the overwhelming task of having to comply withexpensive building repairs imposed by the City's Building Department;especially at a time when our nation faces a stagnant economy. St.Matthew, with its commitment to feed the homeless and unemployed, finds it very hard, if not impossible, to have the funding required for thisawesome task. At St. Matthew, we have an uphill struggle ahead of us.Driven by God's love, we make an urgent and special appeal to pray for

our ministry and help us to raise at least $30,000 to continue to feed the hungry and

LCC Emergency Assistance FundLCC gets requests daily concerning people who need assistance, and it isincreasing because of the current economic times we are living in.

LCC works through our churches to provide assistance by making theneed known - and dollar per dollar we give the money to a church to helpthe family or individual. However, we receive some requests that areemergencies, and money is needed that day or the next day and we can'talways get the need out in our weekly email newsletter first.

Would you consider making a gift to our LCC Emergency Assistance fund so thatwhen these emergency needs occur we can help (through our churches) quicker? This isan important way for the Body of Christ to share the Mercy and Compassion andProclamation of Christ.

Help LCC Purchase a Much Needed TruckLCC continues to supply food, clothing, furniture, and other needed items to families inneed through our churches. In the past we havedone most of this with donated vans andtrailers. As the needs increase, this is becomingtoo costly to operate. We also need a truck topickup items for Disaster Response. We wouldlike to purchase this truck to more efficiently dothis.

One of our volunteers has a 2003 FordRockport box truck that they are willing to sell to us at a great price. The truck has lessthan thirty-thousand miles on it and we can have it for $10,000. This would be such ahelp for us in our ongoing ministry of non-cash items! Could you help us purchase thistruck. LCC does not believe in going into debt so we will only purchase this if we canraise the money. Can you help us in our ever expanding ministry of helping those in needwith the Mercy and Compassion of Christ through churches! Thank you for all yoursupport!
