We have exciting news for WTVP viewers! This summer your programming options will expand signifi cantly, giving you more opportunities for entertainment, remote learning, staying informed, exploring our world and inspiring creativity. It’s one of our most signifi cant programming expansions, and it’s all in response to viewer input and the needs of the communities we serve.
CREATE TV AND WORLD ON SEPARATE CHANNELSInstead of one channel airing only half the available daily programming on Create TV (morning) and World (evening), each will have its own 24/7 home. That means twice the home improvement, gardening, cooking and travel shows of Create TV, and twice the news, documentaries, business, history and in-depth reporting of World.
YOUR INPUT MAKES A DIFFERENCE!Members and viewers like you told us you wanted access to the full slate of Create TV and World programs. Up until now we have been limited by technology. Recent upgrades, funded by several major donations, allow us to broadcast up to fi ve channels simultaneously.
A NEW CHANNEL FOR ENHANCED REMOTE LEARNINGIn conjunction with area school districts, WTVP is planning for a fi fth broadcast channel dedicated solely to remote learning. WTVP REMOTEwill be funded by educational entities and will be accessible to all students throughout our 20-county broadcast area, even those without internet or cable TV connections. Content will be from the PBS digital learning library; with some being locally produced meeting the specifi c needs of our area students. Watch for more on this development soon.
THANK YOU TO OUR MAJOR DONORS!None of these enhancements would be possible without the generous support of several major donors, including a signifi cant gift from Sid and Flo Banwart. Longtime local philanthropists and supporters of WTVP, Sid and Flo have a special interest in improving the lives of children. Their visionary support creates new educational opportunities for all young people. CEFCU will also be collaborating in these efforts to serve the community with both content and fi nancial backing.
YOU WILL NEED TO RESCAN YOUR TV ON JULY 1If you receive the WTVP broadcast signal over the air you will have to “rescan” your television or converter control box to pick up the new 47.4 signal (Create TV). It only takes a few minutes. Using your remote, just choose SCAN or AUTOTUNE from your TV or converter box control menu. Questions? Contact WTVP at 309-677-4747 or check out wtvp.org.
Stay tuned and st ay connected!

PRESERVING ILLINOIS PRAIRIESAN ORIGINAL WTVP PRODUCTIONTHURSDAY, JUNE 4 7 PMPreserving Illinois Prairies takes viewers on a geological journey beginning more than 8,000 years ago when changing weather patterns and glacial forces shaped a magnifi cent, rolling landscape thriving for thousands of years. When European settlers arrived, there were more than 22 million acres of Illinois prairie. All but a few thousand acres had been drained and cultivated or urbanized by 1900.

WTVP 47.1 HD
Kids and parents will remember the past few months as the time when school moved from the classroom to the living room. The internet has become the channel of choice for distributing educational content to students. The trouble with this is not everyone has access to the internet or even a computer. This means thousands of low-income urban families and rural residents were almost completely cut off from instruction after the governor’s fi rst stay-at-home order.
I have written before about how WTVP PBS bridges the “digital divide” by reaching virtually every one of the 200,000 households in a 20-county region with our broadcast signal. In the next couple of months we are planning another huge step toward an even more equitable remote learning model. We’re calling it WTVP REMOTE, a fi fth broadcast channel funded by educational entities and major donors like Sid and Flo Banwart and others and it is dedicated solely to distance learning resources. Some of the content will be from the PBS Digital Learning Library; most will be locally produced to meet the specifi c needs of our area students. You can read more about WTVP REMOTE elsewhere in the Program Guide.
As a public media organization whose purpose is to serve the needs of the community, we know this is the right thing to do. We are looking forward to the opportunity to have an even greater impact in our communities through education.

We have several exciting program schedule changes to announce. For regular viewers of BBC World News, WTVP has taken steps to lessen interruptions of this program during pledge weeks. Beginning in June, BBC World News will move from our main channel to the World Channel, while retaining its original time slot of 10:30 p.m.The World Channel is carried by all area cable companies and is accessible over the air on WTVP 47.3.
WTVP’s locally produced At Issue with H Wayne Wilson, which has been live for the last two months focusing on the COVID-19 pandemic, will now stay in the 8 p.m. Thursday slot followed by Illinois Adventure. This will allow the station to increase At Issue to one hour when needed without forcing viewers to remember to tune in at an earlier time for the special editions.
Join us this June for Downton After Dark. Starting on Monday, June 8, WTVP will give viewers a chance to re-visit the beginning and end of the popular Downton Abbeyseries. Episodes will air at 10 p.m. except on June 12 and 15, when they will begin at 10:30 p.m.
PBS broadcast rights for Downton Abbey will expire after June. It will then move to pay cable services. Here is a chance to sit back with a brandy snifter or a cup of tea and re-enjoy the fi rst and last seasons of this wildly popular historical drama on WTVP.
Changes like these are never made in a vacuum. Programming and schedule choices are based on input from members and viewers like you. Our goal is always the same: the quality programming you and your family want, when you want it. As always, we appreciate your continuing interest and support.

NOTE FROM THE CHAIRMAN
ANDREW A. RANDChairman, IVPTC Board of Directors
WTVP members and viewers love to offer opinions on programming. In fact, we encourage it. Members, underwriters and fi nancial supporters are the engines that makes things happen at WTVP. When we listen and take action, the station refl ects the values of the communities we serve.
With this in mind, I am pleased to announce that, beginning next month, you will be able to tune in to 24/7 programming on Create TV and World. Viewers and members have been asking for this enhancement, but up until now we did not have the technology to make it happen. Now we do, thanks to generous gifts from major donors like local philanthropists Sid and Flo Banwart. CEFCU will also be collaborating in these efforts to serve the community with both content and fi nancial backing.
What’s most important about this change (besides the signifi cant increase in quality programming available each day) is that viewers, members and major donors came together to make it happen. WTVP survives and thrives when all of these elements are part of our actions today and our vision for the future.
Speaking of the future, we can also look forward to a fi fth broadcast channel dedicated solely to remote learning. Once again, this venture will be the result of public need being addressed by fi nancial resources.
You’ll be hearing much more on this development soon. In the meantime, we’re listening.

Science is powerful! Hero Elementary, a new multiplatform animated PBS Kids series, will help spark a love of science among kids nationwide; when premiering June 1 on WTVP.
Hero Elementary is a school for budding superheroes, where kids learn to master their innate powers, like fl ying and teleportation, while exploring science along the way. The launching series will give children ages four to seven important tools to help them solve problems by encouraging them to think and act like scientists, igniting their natural curiosity. Hero Elementary also showcases character and social-emotional concepts such as kindness, empathy and commitment to working together to solve problems.
“With its unique, fun and informative STEM, literacy and social-emotional learning curriculum, Hero Elementary is sure to be a heroic hit with kids, parents and teachers alike,” said Linda Simensky, Head of PBS KIDS Content.
The stories in Hero Elementary center around a diverse group of super students, led by their quirky and enthusiastic teacher, Mr. Sparks. The team works together to help people, solve problems and try to make the world a better place. When their imperfect powers aren’t up to the task, they look to their other powers – the superpowers of science – to help them investigate, observe, make predictions and fi gure out a solution.
The science curriculum in Hero Elementary addresses crucial components of children’s learning. The ability to develop and test ideas, ask questions, predict and observe skills known to contribute to learning in other content areas, such as literacy, language development and critical thinking. Each episode will include two animated 11-minute stories with accompanying interstitial content.

*Headline words from the offi cial state song, Illinois, lyrics by C. H. Chamberlain.
“O’ER THY PRAIRIES VERDANT GROWING…”*
WATCH THE PREMIERE OF THEWTVP ORIGINAL PRODUCTION Preserving Illinois Prairies
Local documentaries have been a hallmark of WTVP since its conception. Each year at least one of the productions looks at an aspect of our environment, its history and the impact of humans. Our newest offering, Preserving Illinois Prairies, will premiere Thursday, June 4 at 7 p.m. on WTVP HD 47.1. The production is made possible by the Backlund Foundation.
ARE WE STILL THE PRAIRIE STATE?When Europeans arrived at the Illinois Territory there were more than 22 million acres of prairies stretching across the state, some with grasses growing to the height of a horse. Today only pockets survive across the state.
Shot last spring and summer at locations across the state, this new WTVPdocumentary explores the natural forces that created the different types of prairies covering our state. Above and below the rich black soil is a complex biosystem supporting a variety of wildlife such as bees, birds and monarch butterfl ies.
PRESERVING NATURAL BEAUTY AND DIVERSITYPreserving Illinois Prairies looks at efforts retain the remaining prairie lands and the work being done to reclaim and expand the native landscape for future generations to study and enjoy.
This new production is just one of several documentaries about Illinois’ natural history produced by WTVP in recent years. Others include: The Illinois River, a two-part series on wetlands and sedimentation in the Illinois River valley, and Nature Returns to Emiquon, about the successful reclamation of farmland to natural wetlands.
IF YOU LIKE WHAT YOU SEE…Locally produced content like Preserving Illinois Prairies is another example of what sets WTVP apart from other local media. If you like what you see, please support our efforts with your generous membership, underwriting and sponsorship. www.wtvp.org
