Practical Examinations in Colombo for the year 2018/2019 were successfully conducted in the fully-equipped new building. This year too practical examinations will be conducted in the same venue.

President’s Message

Annual Christmas Get-together The Christmas get-together was held on the 21st of December 2018 at the IWMS Auditorium with the participation of examiners, receptionists and office staff.

New Year 2019 On the 1st of January 2019, boiling of milk and lighting of the oil lamp were followed by prayers at IWMS premises to mark the New Year. Regrettably, Avurudu celebrations were cancelled on the 22nd of April due to the situation prevalent in the country at that time.

Dear fellow members, I hope this message finds all our members and their families safe in these troubled days. Our prayers are with the affected families in this hour of grief, to overcome this tragedy. It’s with great pride we inform you that we will be celebrating 60 years of service to the children of our nation in February 2020. On behalf of the Council and Examinations Board, I extend our sincere appreciation to all the teachers who have travelled with us through this journey in promoting the arts and language skills

amongst our children, nurturing their talents and encouraging them to be efficient and effective future leaders of our motherland. My sincere thanks to our founder members, the qualified panel of examiners and the staff for their commitment and dedication in this journey of earning the reputation of being the premier and the oldest examining body of Sri Lanka. The climax of our exams and the most important event in our calendar are the Prize Awarding Ceremonies which were held at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium in the month of March and the final Ceremony at the BMICH in April. It’s with deep regret we inform you that we were reluctantly compelled to cancel the “Teachers’ Day” scheduled in June due to the prevailing situation in the country. We are pleased to state that we have successfully completed the first session of theory exams which were postponed and have already commenced our practical exam sessions in Colombo and the outstations. Lets bring all Sri Lankans closer together through music and speech, with your continued support.

This year we conducted 12 Prize Awarding Ceremonies at the Sugathadasa Indoor Stadium, Colombo 14 on the 16th, 21st and 30th of March 2019. The final Prize-Giving was held at the BMICH on the 6th of April 2019. Over 12,300 candidates received their awards at these ceremonies.

Teacher’s Day The Council of IWMS decided to call off Teachers' Day this year in view of the tragic events which occurred in our country on Easter Sunday.

Shramadana

Members of the staff, along with the receptionists, organised a Shramadana on the 10th of May in preparation for the commencement of practical examinations for the year 2019. We thank them very sincerely for their effort in keeping the office premises and equipment clean and orderly.

Course conducted at the University of Colombo

This year, Speech Examiners conducted a three-month course in Spoken English and Communication Skills

for the non-academic staff of the Colombo University. At the end of the course, the participants made

presentations to demonstrate the knowledge and guidance they received as a result of participating in the

course.

Staff News Farewell We bade farewell to a senior staff member, Mrs. Anoma Swarnamala, who resigned after 22 years of service due to personal commitments.

We welcome Ms Shalini Subasinghe (Storekeeper), Ms Dulani Liyanage (Examinations Unit) and

Wasantha Silva (Office Aide) as new staff members at IWMS.

Chairperson’s Message

Dear Teachers and Members,

It gives me great pleasure, to pen these lines for the Newsletter of the Institute

for the year 2019. I’m grateful to the President, Council, Examinations Board,

Our dedicated panel of Examiners and Our dedicated and motivated Staff

Members who have worked tirelessly to ensure the smooth functioning of all

matters related to examinations.

It has not been an easy task to commence exams for this year but with the co-

operation of all and the efforts of all the teachers, we have been able to schedule

exams and hope to continue without a break.

I’m also happy to state that the teachers have been issued Registration Cards with a Registration Number

which you can refer to, whenever you want something clarified.

Theory Examinations – April Due to the tragedy which occurred on Easter Sunday, Theory Examinations in Colombo and the

Outstation centres had to be postponed. Consequently, examinations which were scheduled for the 27th

and 28th of April were postponed to the 8th and 9th of June. We thank the Principal of Isipathana College,

Colombo 05 for providing us the school to conduct our examinations.

Theory examinations in the Outstation centres will be conducted on the 29th of June.

The Examinations' Board wishes to thank the Principals of schools and the Coordinators for their

assistance in the smooth flow of IWMS examinations. We sincerely hope that they will continue to grant

permission to conduct our examinations at their schools.

Practical Examinations

Practical examinations for the year 2019 commenced on the 12th of June with prayers at the IWMS

premises.

Outstation practical examinations commenced on the 22nd of June and look forward to serving you

with commitment.
