Early Release Day

All schools in the York Region District School Board are committed to improving student achievement and well-being. On Thursday, June 27th, 2019 an early release day will take place to allow elementary teachers and support staff to take part in meetings during the afternoon of that day. These meetings will allow for school staff to engage in culminating activities regarding the review and revision of the School’s Improvement Plan as well as important year-end and transition activities that support student success. As has been our practice in the past, students will attend school during the morning of Thursday, June 27th, 2017 only. Students will be dismissed early that day at 11:30 a.m. Arrangements will be made to ensure that students who are normally bused to and from school will receive transportation at this time. Parents/guardians whose children attend after school child care should make appropriate arrange-ments to address this change in schedule. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the office.

There’s Still Time: Summer Institute Program Looking for summer learning and fun activities for students entering Senior Kinder-garten to Grade 8? Summer Institute offers academic, recreational and athletic programs and activities with intentional links to the Ontario Curriculum. The pro-gram runs for six weeks during July and August. It is offered at 11 school sites across York Region.

For more information on dates, programs and locations, please visit YRDSB’s Summer Institute Page (http://www.yrdsb.ca/Programs/summer/si/Pages/default.aspx). Families can register online, as well as in person or by mail. Registration is now open.

Even with the summer just around the corner, the work we do over the summer months remains espe-

cially important, because our continued accuracy with anticipated enrollment helps us better plan, and

optimistically, minimizes the need to move students across classes (’reorganize’) in September. We’ve

been especially fortunate over the past four years not to have had to reorganize classes, though it is im-

portant to recognize this is always a possibility in any given year, especially as enrollments decline over-

all in the community.

We would ask our community for its ongoing help in this work. If you

know you will be moving out of the area in the months ahead, please

let the office know as soon as possible, to help us be accurate with

our enrollment estimates. Similarly, if you have a child who will be

joining us at the school for the first time in junior kindergarten and

have yet to register, we would ask you to do so at your earliest con-

venience. And if you meet someone moving into the community, en-

courage them to register sooner rather than later!

Thank you for your support with our school planning.

Summer is a time for rest and relaxation, but that doesn’t mean you can’t have fun with math. There are numerous ways to embed math into everyday summer activities. Here is a list to get you started:

Monitoring temperature

Outdoor scavenger hunts

Gardening

Cooking

Grocery shopping

Budgeting for a Trip

Packing suitcases/Trunk

Scheduling

Mapping

Keep engaging in mathematics activities throughout the year. Happy summer!

Throughout the summer, students should keep their minds active, and one of the easiest ways for us to support this is by encouraging our children to read a variety of books for pleasure.

We wanted to remind our community that in addition to our sizable school library, Bayview Glen P.S.

families have access to various on-line collections. Bookflix is a sizeable online resource you can ac-cess with the user id dsbyork and the password dsby7692. Please consider using this excellent re-source when reading with your children at home throughout the year, or encouraging them to read independently on a computer or tablet (and of course, encourage them to read physical books too!

Does your child speak a different first language? Then read in that language, too! Unite for Literacy is a free multi-platform website that contains dozens of early reading books across a number of themes, as well as a narration feature that will allow students to read or be read to, making it a worthwhile

home activity for early readers. While this is quite similar to other book repositories, Unite for Litera-cy also provides multilingual narration alongside the English narration, where your child might follow along the text with English narration and first-language translation, enabling them to work on reading skills and learn the language of instruction simultaneously.

If your child enjoys reading and learning on-line, here are some other popular early literacy related

sites he or she can access: Starfall, Storyplace, Kidsreads, and Funbrain. Happy reading!

Bussing Eligibility

Did you know that students’ bussing eligibility changes throughout their school career?

Your child’s eligibility to ride the school bus may change according to their grade and distance from home to school. Below are the provisions for eligibility identified in the School Board’s Transportation Policy #680:

All YRDSB students in Grades JK-3 who live within 1.2 km of their school are not eligible for transportation

All YRDSB students in Grades 4-8 who live within 1.6 km of their school are not eligible for transportation

All YRDSB students in Grades 9-12 who live within a transit served area are not eligible for transportation.

To view Board Policy #680 Student Transportation, please visit www.yrdsb.edu.on.ca. For more infor-mation about bus transportation and to determine your son/daughter’s eligibility please visit www.schoolbuscity.com.

… And some reading, too!
