PRESIDENT’S MESSAGEby Leslie DeGagne

Neighbours are great—they are there to give you a cup of sugar when its needed, watch your house when you are not there, and be company when needed. Good neighbours play vital roles in in our lives and their value is sometimes taken for granted. We have all seen the bad television shows where the nosy neighbour is tak-ing advantage of knowing who lives where on the street and has to insinuate themselves in all aspects of their neighbour’s life. This is just that an overblown image that makes people laugh so they will watch the show. We may not always get along with every neighbour, but we also don’t get along with our siblings all the time either. Living with others is what we do as humans and being a good neighbour is just one way to make your life more fulfilled, it is how we build community.

The Calgary flood a few years back was an example of how neighbours work together to improve the lot of others. The legacy left behind was a day dedicated to neighbours. The city recognized the value of people stepping up to help those in need and created Neigh-bour Day to not only remind us of the devastation but to give people a chance to get to know their neighbour and have some fun. This year we celebrate on Saturday, June 16th and like last year TGCA is firing up the barbe-cue and inviting our neighbours and members to come and get to know us. From 11am until 1pm we will be grilling hamburgers and hotdogs and we want to see all our neighbours come on over and share their ideas of community with us.

Bring a plant and help beautify the garden, come in and get to know what activities we provide and see the area that the new playground will occupy by the end of

October. We will be giving tours of the building and are happy to answer any questions that you may have. It is a busy weekend as Father’s Day is Sunday but getting to spend time with a good neighbour is a great thing to do.

Speaking of dad, why not bring him down and watch a soccer match or two in our lounge? We will be show-ing the World Cup on the big screen starting Friday June 15th and we welcome all to come in and enjoy the event together. A burger and a beer while watching good sporting events is a great way to spend time with Dad.

While on the subject of things upcoming, don’t forget that Stampede is around the corner. We are in the pro-cess of planning a fun event for July. Right now, we have breakfast planned thanks to the Booster Club and a vintage car show thanks to Dale Oleshko. Mary Lacoste is busy looking for other volunteers to help out if you would like to get involved call the office and we will get you in touch with the right person. Hope we see all our neighbours in June and don’t forget to do something special for your father.

PUBLIC SERVICE REPORT

Recycle DepotFor anyone who was looking for the Recycle De-pot during our typical May long Saturday time slot, you would have discovered it had been cancelled. I ran a piece in the May Horizon about why we had to back away from it this year and expressed the hope that it would not be the end. Please see that article online for details. Just as an update; the of-fice has received multiple calls of disappointment about this development and we are very cognizant of the recognition for the service the Recycle De-pot provided to people. As previously mentioned if you want to see it become a reality again why not volunteer to help make it happen? You can email me or call the office with your contact details.

Neighbour DayThis became a thing in 2014 to honour the service between citizens during the 2013 flood event. TGCA was pleased to participate in that inaugural year with the Tuxedo Park Community Association whose then President was a driving force in 2014 to create a city-wide day of celebration and recog-nition.

It’s fair to call “Neighbour Day” a “made up” holiday/event, but in truth aren’t all holidays initially? In further honesty, TGCA floundered a bit in 2015 and 2016 with what to do with this day as other com-munity associations took the ball and successfully ran with it. Last year things improved however. We did a free barbecue, a planting event in the front flower beds and married our extremely popular Parade of Garage Sales to Neighbour Day. Hopeful-ly this year building on that we will offer all those components as well as do a “Jane’s Walk” style tour of the TGCA facility and possibly grounds where we will highlight all we have to currently offer and some of the projects we hope to achieve in future. There are also small grants available from the city for individual block parties etc. You can email Tan-nis at [email protected] for details. Also check our Facebook page for updates as we ap-proach Neighbour Day which this year is June 16.

CYCLISTS

&@#$! Cyclists!

Q: I am fed up of bikes sneaking up behind me and riding at top speed on the pathways! Can you make them stop?! (We could ask the same question about people in cars speeding as a rule, rather than as an exception, but alas, this column is too short to fix all the world’s problems).

A: I can’t make them stop, no – but I can try…

HEY BIKE-RIDING FOLKS! THIS BEHAVIOUR IS NOT OKAY!

So here are some friendly reminders:

People on bikes:

1. Being late does not give you carte blanche to be a jerk.

2. MUPs have speed limits (20km/hr)

3. In Calgary, all bikes are required to have a bell. FYI: It is not a decoration. USE YOUR BELL.

3a. If a fellow path user cannot hear your bell (ear buds, disability, screaming baby/barking dog) it is still YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to avoid them.

People walking:1. When you hear a bike bell, move to your right. This is Canada after all, and overtaking happens on the left.

1a. If you cannot hear a bike bell (for whatever reason) I suggest you stay on the far right of the path…

2. Try to keep your dog/child/stroller/toys etc. on the right-hand side of the yellow line (yeah, I know… just do your best).

Remember, mes amis: No one is a mind reader. Caution, kindness, and courtesy. And if someone does a thing that you don’t like, odds are it was not a calculated move aimed at making your life miserable, but an honest mistake. We all make them. So be magnanimous, I can virtually guaran-tee that you will feel better being nice than being an ass.

À la prochaine, mes amis. Until next time.

COMMUNITY RELATIONS REPORT

On March 24th we held our Annual Easter Caper in the Thorncliffe Room. We were sur-prised at the amount of people in attendance and will most likely need the Main Hall next year.

Children and their parents were happy to have the Canadian Rabbit Hopping Club and their rabbits perform for us once again. They were followed by Magician Richard Rondeau who put on a great show.

The party ended with a visit from the Easter Bunny and the chance to have your child’s picture taken with the bunny. The children all received a goody bag, juice box and an Easter cookie.

Thanks go out to the volunteers at this event.

Until next time.

58th Cub section has had a busy winter season they have been working on learning about methods for starting fires and how to repair stoves, so they can get their fire and stove permits. We have had different ad-ventures during this winter, snowshoeing in the Kanan-askis, tobogganing and winter camping. Scouting is all about adventure and experiencing new things, for most of the Cubs and some of the new Scouters this was the first time they had been camping in the winter, and for a couple of Cubs it was the first time camping away from their family. During the camp the Cubs set up and slept in tents, learned about ice safety, hiked to a lake, ice fished, cooked hotdogs over a fire, roasted marsh-mallows, practiced fire starting with flint and steel. The Cubs are getting ready for a big scouting gathering called Cuborama where 500 cubs from across the city will be getting together for fun, camping and games. A couple of cubs will be going to a summer scouting camp for a week. Scouting is all about adventure.
