_____________________________________________________ Donald T. Critchlow, professor of history and Director of the ASU Center for Political Thought and Leadership at Arizona State University. The Center's mission is to promote a greater understanding of the foundations of democratic society through undergraduate education, scholarly research, and civic involvement. Dr. Critchlow is the author of twenty-three books, including most recently Republican Character: From Nixon to Reagan (University of Pennsylvania Press. Scheduled December 2017) and Future Right: The Forging of a New Republican Majority to be released by St. Martin's Press in May 2016. He is the founding editor of the Journal of Policy History. He has appeared on C-SPAN, NPR'sTalk of the Nation, and BBC World News.

President’s Message

Hello RWOP Members,

The month of May has been busy! Our May 15th luncheon featured ten impressive and uplifting scholarship recipients who helped us with our Pledge of Allegiance, Prayer, and in singing God Bless America. Four of the students presented their plans and aspirations moving forward. What a great start to a fully packed agenda! May 15th is Peace Officer's Memorial Day, we were proud to honor our law enforcement where many attended our luncheon from the different agencies in Yavapai County. We heard a heart wrenching account of an ambush where Stephen Edgar (VIP) was shot in the line of duty. Thanks to God's grace, Mr. Edgar is with us to share his incredible story. These programs do not happen without months of work and follow through. Therefore, I would like to thank Debra McVey and her team, Julie Pettit and Sherrie Hanna for a great and engaging May luncheon.

April 28th at Las Fuentes, our forum hosted six of the scholarship recipients who were given the opportunity to shine in a panel discussion format. The Scholarship Team put them through their paces and Steve Blair, Councilman and radio

host, participated as well as had each student on his radio program. It was an uplifting and heartfelt program.

If you missed it, you missed a fun event on May 11th! Our Thursday Night on the Town featured a Presidential Trivial Pursuit game created by Pam Jones! Divided up into four teams, we answered some thought provoking and sometimes difficult questions. It was a hoot and a time to just have fun and laugh with friends! I won't tell you which team won as it is not nice to brag!

May 18-20, thirteen RWOP members attended the Spring AzFRW meeting in Flagstaff. The speakers were fabulous! Karen Fann gave an informative presentation on Senate bills and what they mean to Arizonans. Two authors presented very highly charged subject matter that was riveting and informative. Federation meetings were held, business was done and there was networking and camaraderie shared by all! Thanks to all for their hard work in making this successful meeting possible!

I will leave you with this last thought as I would be remiss not to mention our incredible President Trump. Against all odds he is making a difference as he begins his efforts to fight terrorism. He met not only with powerful leaders in the world on his first foreign tour but he offered them a plan to save themselves and their people from terrorist that only want to destroy the fabric of the world and their respective countries. He didn't instruct others on how to live, run their countries or how to comply with a culture different than their own. He asked them to unite and fight the enemy we all face. He did it with grace and was presidential and most of all he didn't apologize! American leadership in the world is back!

Caring for America Caring for America will spotlight Prescott's CCJ - Coalition for Compassion and Justice at our June luncheon. For over 17 years CCJ has been a catalyst for change in our community, giving a "hand up" to those less fortunate with a range of services and programs. This May, CCJopened "The Little Tree House" to help low-income families with children work toward their goals of self-sufficiency. This new facility offers a fun, safe place for children to play and read, while allowing their parents to research work opportunities, take on-line classes or look into social services using on-site computers. Much needed and appreciated are donations of...Diapers - Wipes - Low/no sugar juice boxes - Shelf-stable milk boxes - Gasoline gift cards - New/gently used children's books - School supplies. And of course, cash or your check (made out to "CCJ") is always welcome!

Americanism - Pam Jones

Edward R. Murrow once said: "We are in the same tent as the clowns and the freaks - that's show business." Even though Murrow recognized news as just another form of entertainment, he stayed true to his responsibility to report the facts. As a result, many believe that the golden era of journalism began with Murrow in the 1940's and ended when Walter Cronkite signed off in 1981.

Back then we had only thirty minutes of plain news. There was no commentary, talking heads, editorial comment, guesswork, or partisanship. It was like Joe Friday's: "Just the facts Ma'am." We trusted these men. So much so, that many historians credit a Cronkite special on the Vietnam War as the reason Lyndon Johnson dropped out of the 1968 presidential race. As Johnson stated at the time, "If I've lost Cronkite....I've lost Middle America."

Those days are long gone. The news media has simply become another tentacle of the political octopus, strangling the free exchange of ideas and opinions. No longer do we get actual facts; we now get facts from unnamed sources to

support a selected narrative. The goal is to manipulate the viewer's opinion. Proof is found in the manner by which the mainstream media treats President Trump as compared to the way it treated President Obama.

This is best illustrated by a joke I read: 'President Trump and the Pope are on a boat when the Pontiff's hat blows into the

water. Trump says he will get the hat and proceeds to walk across the top of the water. The next day the headlines read: 'Trump Can't Swim.' Mr. Murrow was right - the news media is in the same tent as the clowns and the freaks.

Legislature – Sherrie Hanna

On May 10th, with the end of legislative session 2017, LD1 Legislators Karen Fann, Noel Campbell and David Stringer wrapped up an exceptionally productive year for Yavapai County.

Their top four budget priorities included the return of Highway User Revenue Funds for county roads, the return of Yavapai County's share of lottery money, a substantially reduced county contribution to the state for juvenile detention, and additional funding for rural schools. All of these priorities were largely met in the final budget. The reversal of county monies swept by the state during the recession will amount to over $3 million in additional funds for Yavapai County.

Senator Karen Fann is proud of her bill banning teen drivers from texting while driving. The close vote in the House received key support from Reps. Campbell and Stringer.

Noel Campbell, who heads the House Transportation Committee, initiated a discussion to reform the gas tax that funds highway construction and maintenance. Although his bill failed to gain traction this year, he showed determination in starting a discussion we all know needs to take place.

Freshman Rep. Stringer is proud of his role in increasing school funding and expanding Empowerment Scholarship Accounts to include all Arizona families and children.

All in all, a great year for Yavapai County and our State Legislators.
