From the Rector

Dear Friends, WhileonholidayonOrkneywevisitedoncemoreoneofmyfavouriteplacesontheislands,theItalianChapel.(Aphotographoftheinteriorofthechapelisonthecoverofthisissueofthemagazine.)Itisatestamenttofaithenvisionedandcreatedby the Italianprisonersofwaron the islandduringWWII. Without achurchof their ownas theybuilt theChurchill Barriers, theydecided to forgooneoftheirNissanhutstoconvertit intoachapel,everythingwascraftedoutof items they had to hand and the art was prayerfully added, includingdeceptive trompe-l'œil and chandeliers made out of corned beef tins. Afterspendingthedayinhardlabourbuildingthebarrierstheythengaveupanyresttoworkonthechapel, forhavingaplacetoworshiptogetherhadbeenvitallyimportanttothem.Hovering above the altar is the dove of the HolySpirit. Captivesas theywere,even if itwason thebeautiful Orkneys, the symbol of freedom in ChristmusthavebroughtconsolationtomanyahomesickItalian.When Jesus ascended into heaven he told thediscipleshewouldnotleavethemcomfortless.TheHolySpirit,hisSpirit,wouldnowbetheirguideashehadbeen.Eversincethefirst Pentecost, which we celebrate on 4th June this year, the Church hasremembered the day that the Holy Spirit first descended on the embryonicChurch. Thoseprisoners can teachus that faith spurredonby theHolySpiritcanachieve remarkable things, even in the faceofoddswhichmight seem tosaynothingorlittleispossible.As I sat in that chapel oncemore, Iwondered if there had been someof theprisoners who had be nay sayers voicing concerns about the futility of it all.Whetherothershad thought that things shouldhavebeendoneadifferently.Building the Church has never been an easy task, the disciples got it wrongcountlesstimes,evenwhenJesushimselfwasstillintheirmidst,andtheywouldget itwrongagainevenwith theHolySpiritas theirguide. TheChurchneedstheguidanceoftheHolySpirit,however,countlessgenerationshavestruggled

withdiscerningtheHolySpiritfrompersonalwill.TheChurcharguedinfavourofslaveryforgenerations,infavourofwomennotgettingthevote,infavourofawifebeingahusband’sproperty,thelistofthingsthechurchhasgotwrongislong,however,stillwemuststrivetofollowtheHolySpirit’sleading.CorrectingthemistakeswhentheyarerevealedandputtingpersonalfeelingsasidewhentheHolySpiritnudgesinotherdirections.AstheScottishEpiscopalChurchmeetsinGeneralSynodanddiscusseswhetherornot itwillmakechangestothecanonstoallowforequalmarriagestotakeplacewithinourchurchestheguidanceoftheHolySpiritisverymuchneeded.Please, regardless of your own personal views on this subject, pray for thosemeetinginEdinburghfrom8th-10thJune,thatGod’swillwillbedone. Prayforthosewhowillhurtregardlessofwhichwaythevotegoesandforourbishopsastheyleadthechurchonwardfromtheresultofthevote.

Ayman Jarjour Concert Aworld-renownedclassicalguitarististoplayaspecialconcertinMilngavieonSunday,June11.AymanJarjourwillbeperformingfreeofchargetohelpraisefundsfortheworkofMédecinsSanFrontières[DoctorsWithoutBorders]inhisnativeSyria,andthroughouttheworld.Theinternationally-acclaimedmusicianis a dedicated supporter of the charity which provides medical care forthousands of people caught up in the violence of his war-torn country. Agraduate of the famous Juilliard School in New York, Ayman Jarjour hasperformedsoloandwithorchestrasinmanypartsoftheworldincludingSyria,Belgium, Lebanon, Egypt,Malta, Jordan,Germany, Tunisia, Sudan, Turkey, theUS and the UK. Ayman has been described as a ‘remarkable virtuoso’ whoseplaying can leave listeners ‘utterly charmed and extremely contented’. HisMilngavie concert has been organised by Milngavie Refugee Action Group[MRAG].AspokespersonforMRAGsaid:‘Thisisarareopportunitytohearaliveperformancebyoneoftheworld’sgreatestclassicalguitaristsandweareveryprivileged that he has agreed to play here in Milngavie.’ Médecins Sans

General Synod TheGeneralSynodoftheScottishEpiscopalChurchtakesplaceinStPaul’sandStGeorge’s,Edinburghfrom8thto10thJune.Synodpapersareavailableon-lineattheScottishEpiscopalChurchwebsite,ifyouareinterested,andyouwillalsobe able to hear the Synod live from the site. Due to the discussion on theMarriageCanontherewillalsobeTVcamerasthisyearandtherewilldoubtlessbecoverageontheScottish,ifnotnationalnewsofthedebateandresult.The bishops have already produced draft guidelines should the changes bepassedatSynodandthoseguidelinesareavailablewithintheSynodPapers.Ifthe proposed changes go through they will be discussed at the Vestry’s Julymeeting.

• Money from the Lent Lunch was earmarked to aid the resettlement ofrefugeesinourcommunityandtheproceedsfromtheLentBoxeswillgoto the same cause. East Dunbartonshire Council is expected to resettlefourfamiliesandfourunaccompaniedchildren,thefamiliesfirst,

• Holy Week services, with participation from Roddy Hamilton of New

Kilpatrick, were well received. Some of our All Saints congregationattended daily, others once or twice. ABC (Association of BearsdenChurches) serviceswere poorly attended – thiswas disappointing but inlinewithpreviousyears.PalmSundayandEasterDay serviceswerewellattendedbyourcongregation.

• Plans for the Table Top Sale, to be held on June 3rd, arewell advanced.

Sadly, there has beenno interest in theOpenGardensDay, planned forSeptember 2nd. If no interest is forthcoming this event will have to becancelled.

• All Saints will, by default, be responsible for the maintenance of the

CommunityDefibrillator.• DateofthenextVestryMeeting:Monday,12thJune2017.

JohnBrookerAn Ecumenical Musical First.

OnabusymusicalweekendwhichhadfeaturedthedisparatetalentsdisplayedontheEurovisionSongContest,AllSaintsestablished itsownnewanduniquemusical event. This was the Choral Evensong on Sunday 14th May whichcombinedthevoicesofourownChoirwiththoseof choristers from New Kilpatrick and St. JamesPaisley. The joint forces were rehearsed anddirected by our own Peter Christie and wereaccompanied by Chris Nickol, the organist fromNewKilpatrick.TheServicewasledandconductedby Kirsten, but to add to the Ecumenical themethe Sermon was given by the Rev. RoddyHamilton. He delivered a stimulating address onhow we should obey the command of Jesus ‘toloveourneighbours’throughgivingservicetoothers.

ThelargemixedcongregationfromthetwoBearsdenchurchesclearlyenjoyedthe wonderful singing, particularly of the Anthems. It also provided ourPresbyterian friends with some insights into the mysteries of the AnglicanPrayerBook. I justhope they realised that thiswasnotournormalpatternofServiceoneverySunday,butmightbetemptedtojoinusagainifandwhenitisrepeatedinthefuture.Thosefortunateenoughtobepresentonthisoccasionwillhopethatwillbethecase.

Congregation News Baptism of Annella Louise Bingham

AnnellaLouise,daughterofEleanor(néeStack)andAlexBingham,wasbaptisedonApril 30thonboardHMSDuncan.Theship’supturnedbellwasusedasthe font and Annella’snamewill be inscribed onthebell.

Eleanor is the command-ingofficerofHMSDuncanwhichwillbeoperatingastheFlagshipoftheNATOfleetintheBlackSeaduringthesummer.

The following Sunday, in their local church, Annellawas welcomed into the congregation and presentedwiththebaptismalcandle–saferthanaliveflameonthedestroyer!Funeral of Nessie Grogan TheserviceofthanksgivingforthelifeofNessiewaswellattendedbyfamilyand

friends on 11th May. The format was arranged by Nessieherself: hymns,readings and a request to sing out, andKirstin said at the end that Nessie would have beenpleasedaswehadsungsowell.

Shehadbeenamemberofthechurchchoirformanyyears and music gave her great joy, but sadly herdeafness in latter years spoiled her pleasure andisolatedherinmanyways.

Nessiewas a great flower arranger and amember of the local club formanyyearsandinfactstartedmanyofusoffindoingthechurchflowers,encouragingustotryourhandatitwithlotsoflittletipsetc.

Herfaithwasthemainstayofherlifeandafterherownfamilycameherchurchfamily and theMothers Union. She worked tirelessly for it locally and in thediocesevisitingthesickandalsokeepingusallgoingwiththeprojectsandaimsoftheMothersUnion.

Wewill allmiss her but her timehad comeand the last 2 years havebeen astruggleforher.Wewillkeepherinourheartsasanexampleofagoodlifelivedthinkinganddoingforothers.

Wednesday Lunch News

AswehavecometotheendofanothersuccessfulLunchGroupyearitisgoodtolookbackonouractivities.Itiswonderfulthatweareabletousethechurchpremises for such a worthwhile cause. To achieve outreach by giving peoplewhoarelonelyaplacetogoforcompanionshipandfellowship.Duringthislastyear we have served over 700 meals, ofwhich approximately one third were tonon All Saints members. Our menu hasbeenexpandedsothatwenowalsohavehomemade cakes and biscuits and a“coffeeshop”forladiesfollowingtheirtaichiclasses.As events we have had Harvest Lunch,cake days, flower days, apple days, FoodBank donation days, a Scottish quiz,speakers on diverse topics such as SpainandtheScottishlanguage,andacraftsalestable.Wehavebakedanddecorated107Christmascakes,hadaChristmasPartyfor70peoplewithmusicfromSusanandJohnHarrington,andadelightfulendoftermlunchwithmusicfromPennyandGeoffHaydock.Wedidnotsetoutwiththeintentionofraisingfunds,butanotherfruitfulyearhasmeantwehaveraised£3413forgoodcauses,£650ofwhichhasbeengiventotheChurchfortheVestry’suse.

Anupdate toourpreviousarticle regarding theBoysBrigadenational Chess and Masterteam competitions. You mayremember that the boys of 1st Bearsden had been crowneddouble Scottish Champions andhad earnedplaces in theUKnationalfinals.First upwas theUK chess final on 28thMarchhostedby theAirdrie Coatbridge andDistrict Battalion. The four finalistswere 1st Bearsdenand7thEdinburghforScotland,1stCheslynHayforEnglandand1stArdstrawforNorthern Ireland. It wasextremely tight but 1st Bearsden (made up of Fergus, John and Alistair) weredeclaredtheUKchampions.Saturday8thApril saw the4man teamofFergus,Ross,JohnandGregheadingofftoBelfastfortheMasterteamNationalfinal.Itwasgoingtobea longdayastheymetupatGlasgowAirportat6.00am.Therewere6 teams in the final 1st Bearsden and 1stPolmont for Scotland, 1stGuildfordand1stCheslyn Hay for England and 4thNewtonabbey and 1st Ardstraw forNorthern Ireland – so two old adversariesfrom the Chess final! The 2 rounds that teams could prepare for in advancewere Bible Knowledge (Mark 13-16) and BB knowledge (BB Gazette Autumn2016) the remaining rounds were General Knowledge, Sport, Blockbusters,Anagrams, Famous Landmarks, History, Logos and Faces. Having won theScottish finalbyamerehalfpoint they triumphed in theNational finalwithascoreof80pointsbeating1stArdstrawintosecondplacewith76pointsand1stCheslynHaywerein3rdplacewith73.5points.InrecognitionoftheirachievementofbeingcrowneddoubleUKchampionsthisyear a motion was filed in the Scottish Parliament by Gil Paterson tocongratulatethem–MotionnumberS5M-05386ifyouwanttolookitup.Thisfollows a previous motion lodged by Fulton McGregor (S5M-05150)congratulatingthemontheirChesswin.
