Independence Coffee, Del Sol Food Company win 2017 ‘Small Business of the Year’ Awards
At the Small Business Forum hosted in Brenham on June 7, two local businesses received a presti-gious honor, having been selected as Washington County’s Small Businesses of the Year for 2017.
The Small Business Forum featured an impressive line-up of informative speakers and ex-hibitors, and there was a crowd of over 100. Awards were pre-sented by the Washington Coun-ty, Burleson County and Grimes County Chambers.
In Washington County, the first award (business size 1-25) was presented to Independence Cof-fee Company. Owners Ragan and Christi Bond were present, along with many of their staff. (Inde-pendence Coffee has graciously donated their coffee to this event for the past two years.)
Independence Coffee gives generously to many local orga-nizations in the community in-cluding Adam’s Angels–Serving Families Who Face Childhood Cancer, The Baylor Park Project, The Simon Theatre Project, and Brenham High School Special Needs Program.
Their involvement doesn’t stop with donations to good causes. It includes a plan to better the local community while establishing a footprint in the national and glob-al community sectors through the GoTexan, Fair Trade and Whole Trade Certifications. As they grow, so will their focus on giv-ing back to those in need.
The Washington County Chamber applauds Ragan and
Small Business of the Year (1-25 employees) Independence Coffee Company.

Brenham Floral Co. New Owners Are Committed to Maintaining Tradition of Quality and Service
Business Spotlight
Mary Grant Avina and Meg Grant purchased the Brenham Floral Compa-ny from longtime owners Debbie Wolt-mann and Destry Pohlmeyer just in time for Mother’s Day. Mothers themselves, the pair of sisters who live in Chappell Hill and Burton respectively, plan to car-ry on the quality design work and ded-icated commitment to their customers that Debbie and Destry brought to the business for so many years.
Owning a flower shop has been a lifetime
dream for Meg, whose first career was as a magazine journalist. Mary, formerly a re-altor, property manager and banker, brings her business acumen to the partnership, aptly titled Sisters’ Next Chapter.
Mary and Meg are excited to launch this second career, and expect Brenham Floral Company will continue to bloom under their new ownership.
Brenham Floral Company is located at 2630 Highway 36 South in Brenham. Phone: (979) 836-3566.

Geiger Press Tour continues to generate publicity
Valuable publicity for Brenham and Washington County results each year from articles that travel writers produce after visiting our area on press tours conducted by Geiger & Associates PR agency.
The Chamber-CVB last hosted a tour in November 2015. The most recent article resulting from that tour is a 10-page feature about Washington County in the April issue of Texas Highways. According to Geiger PR officials, the advertising equivalency for that amount of space in Texas Highways totals nearly $75,000. If you haven’t seen the article, call us at the Visitor Center and we can email you a PDF to read (979-836-3696).
Entitled “Washington County Ramble,” this 10-page article in the April issue of Texas Highways covers of a number of tourism ele-ments in both city and county.
Annual Photo Contest now under way

“Leading Ladies” at Unity Theatre
In this hilarious comedy by the author of Lend Me A Tenor and Moon Over Buffalo, two English Shakespear-ean actors, Jack and Leo, find themselves down on their luck. When they hear that an old lady in York, Pennsyl-vania, is about to die and leave her fortune to her two long lost English nephews, they resolve to pass them-selves off as her beloved relatives and get the cash. But when they get to York, they find out that the relatives aren’t nephews, but nieces! Romantic entanglements abound, especially when Leo falls head-over-petticoat in love with the old lady’s vivacious niece, Meg, who’s engaged to the local minister. Meg knows that there’s a wide world out there, but it’s not until she meets “Maxine and Stephanie” that she finally gets a taste of it.
