2016 Ringing the Bell Survey Report

The 2016 Ringing the Bell Senior Survey was administered to graduating seniors between April 20th and May 9th. Overall, 154 out of 188 expected graduates participated in the survey, representing an 82% response rate. Key Findings • 47% of graduates were qualified to “Ring the Bell” by the time of graduation. Qualifications

required for “Ringing the Bell” include a job offer, graduate or professional school acceptance, military service, Peace Corps volunteering, and other research/scholarship appointments such as a Fulbright.

• One-half of the Class of 2016 planning to work after graduation had accepted or were offered at least one position by Commencement, a three-year high.

• The overall graduate school/professional school acceptance rate for Class of 2016 graduates was 92.5%.

• Nearly 90% (89.6%) of the Class of 2016 indicate future plans to pursue graduate study. • Nearly 60% (58.8%) of the Class of 2016 report international experiences, most commonly

involving Global Awareness courses/programs or a semester/year abroad. • Two-thirds (66.7%) of the Class of 2016 held one or more internships while at Agnes Scott, and

71% report participating in mentored research or creative projects. Just over 90% of respondents report participating in either an internship or mentored research.

Seventeen (11.0%) respondents noted that their primary activity in Fall 2016 will take place outside the US – activities include the Peace Corps, graduate school, travel, employment and Fulbright research. Community-Based Research Projects Working with Jasmine Heath and the Fernbank Science Center to study geological samples which are potential ejecta from the Chicxulub impactor Worked through AIM - Aid for Inmate Mothers Surveys for capstone classes Programming Board- Music Committee Member Sociology/Anthropology Club- Secretary My research with the bioinformatics class involves collaboration between my partner, my classmates to compare results, as well as undergraduates all over the country. Also for my research at Emory, there are several collaborators throughout the Emory campus that I needed to network and collab with My research site was here at Agnes Scott College. In Intro to Business Management, we had a group project where we went to a nonprofit organization (Decatur Cooperative Ministry), conducted interviews, job analyses, and research on each job position there. We then created, and presented to the director, a proposal of our ideas and plans/steps for how DCM could be more efficient and successful overall. In Business Organization, I would with the ASC Athletics Dept. to improve fundraising. I researched a local high school that assisted with data collection in my senior project. I participated in the Genomic Education Partnership and annotated a portion of Drosophila species genome. I coordinate a KIDS GA event at Morehouse School of Medicine. I created and aided with setting up stations for the kids, the decorations and the food and beverages, amongst other things. I assisted a student with her research on online dating populations I applied this experience with the CDC and the YMCA in a faculty-mentored independent research project where I assessed the utility of the Health Belief Model and the Socio-Ecological Model to examine Latin Americans’ barriers and facilitators to enrollment in a diabetes prevention program. Were Latinos with prediabetes not participating in the intervention because they underestimated the severity or their individual susceptibility to diabetes? Or did their exiguous participation stem from structural and interpersonal barriers? I sought to answer this and partnered with the Latin American Association to recruit participants. I devoted the semester to conducting focus groups in Spanish and analyzing the resulting data through the iterative process of thematic coding. I became more conscious of participants’ challenges with the English language, reliance on public transportation, economic limitations, and social marginalization, all of which revealed a significant level of disempowerment. A key part of translational research is communicating findings back to the people who matter; in this case, that meant advocating for the YMCA to hire a bilingual lifestyle coach to teach the course.
