Market Review

Surpassing market estimates, India’s Real GDP came in at

7.9% for Q4 FY16, higher than 7.2% growth witnessed in the previous quarter. While growth in industry and services sector remained comfortable, rebound in agriculture sector comes as a respite.

The FY16 growth numbers were fairly on expected lines as anticipated by the Government in its advance estimates. Recent unusual surge in inflation to 5.39% in Apr-16 has curbed most expectations of monetary easing in the June policy. Against this backdrop, with rural demand being the centre focus of development in the economy, the government’s measures aimed particularly at the farmers come at an opportune time.

INR ended the month of May at 67.23 against the USD.

Indian broader indices outperformed most of the peers in the month. Sensex and Nifty both were up by 4.14% and 3.95% respectively.

In the corresponding period, FIIs were net buyers in Equity segment worth around 2578 Crores and were sellers in Debt segment worth 5171 Crores respectively.

Mutual Funds were net buyers in Equity to the tune of 6328 Crores and in debt net sellers up to 1092 Crores.

» Children’s Education

» Buying a House/ Car

» Children’s Marriage

» Planning a Leisurely vacation

They can be as short as few Months or may even trend across years. The key parameters before defining goals are:

» How Much money is required? (After adjusting for inflation)

» How much time is there to reach the goal?

Check out Income vs Age graph for various goals of an individual.

IMPORTANT CONCEPTS TO UNDERSTAND BEFORE INVESTING

Investment universe has tons of financial products adding up every now and then. The focus is more on which product to choose rather than how/why to choose. Let us check five important terms in investment which you ought to understand before opting for an investment.

Inflation

The rate at which the general level of prices for goods and services is rising, and, subsequently, purchasing power is falling is known as Inflation.

This can be best explained by Dosanomics, as suggested by our beloved RBI Governor Mr. Raghuram Rajan. With high inflation and high interest rates, a pensioner who invests 100,000 rupees could buy the same number of dosas with the interest at the end of the year as he could at the start. But if inflation came down, even with a lower interest rate, the same pensioner could buy more dosas each year with the return on his investment. When inflation is 5.5% but the interest rate you are getting is 8%, you are earning a real rate of 2.5%, which means 2.5% more dosas.

It is also popularly known as the time value of money, which is the principle that a certain amount of money today has a different buying power (value) than the same currency amount of money in the future. The value of money at a future point of time would take account of interest earned or accrued over a given period of time.

CPI (Consumer Price Index)

A measure that examines the weighted average of prices of a basket of consumer goods & services, such as transportation, food & medical care.

Story of The Month

In the dusty streets of a large city lived a beggar procuring alms and rice daily from passersby. Most of the days he was unable to gain enough food for a meal. At night, he slept under the sky with only a rag to cover him. His life was difficult, but he had grown used to it over the many years.

One day, the beggar heard that the Emperor was coming to town for a visit. “I am sure the generous Emperor will see the state I am in and grant a generous gift. The richest of all men will bestow some sympathy and relief on me in a manner that would undoubtedly surpass the paltry givings of the regular citizens”, he thought.

He made plans to seat himself along the route the Emperor will be traversing, so that the Emperor does not miss to notice the beggar. He gathered all his belongings and sat on the street.

The royal caravan finally approached and stopped right in front of him around mid-day. While the beggar had expected no more than a little gift from the Emperor’s servants, he was speechless when the cavalcade halted beside him, and the great ruler himself emerged in front of him.

THE EMPEROR AND THE BEGGAR

You get the best out of every situation when you give the best of yourself. Only by giving you are able to receive more than you already have.

The Emperor approached the beggar, shook the poor man’s hand, touched him gently on the shoulder and looked into his eyes and said “Kind sir, may I have a little gift of rice?”

For a moment, the beggar didn’t understand what the Emperor said. The Emperor motioned to his bowl which had some rice. “Can you please spare some grains of rice?” the powerful man insisted.

The beggar could barely believe what was happening to him. He had only a handful of grains. He knew he could not deny the Emperor’s request by any means. He reluctantly counted five grains of rice and dropped them into the hands of the Emperor.

The Emperor thanked him and shook his hand once more and went on his way. Confused, hurt and angry, the beggar watched the caravan disappear.

That night, while he was cleaning his rice for his dinner, he noticed something glinting in his bowl. He looked closer and a thrill shot through him when he dug out a tiny gold nugget out of his bowl.

The gold nugget was enough for him to buy him a few months off the street.

“There must be more of it” he thought and started to sift through the rice in search of more gold. He found four more pieces of gold nuggets inside his rice bowl.

As he stared down at the small fortune in his bowl, it dawned on him: there were five gold nuggets. One for each grain of rice he had offered the Emperor.
