The Glory of Bhakti

Bhagavan Sri Krishna Himself states in the Gita that there are four types of devotees – the distressed, the person who desires prosperity and achievement, the devotee who seeks knowledge and the knower (Jnani) himself -

Many misunderstand that Bhakti has no place in the Upanishadic philosophy of Advaita. Bhagavan Veda Vyasa’s son Sri Shuka is a great example of a Jnani endowed with Bhakti. Maharshi Shukha’s status is such that even when we study Vedanta, His name is the first that is taken as the illustration of a Mukta – the liberated one – MegkeÀes cegkeÌle: JeeceosJees cegkeÌle:. Yet, He expounded Bhagavatam to Maharaja Parikshit with utmost devotion delighting in the exposition. Thus, even Jnanis, who revel in the Self, remain naturally and unconditionally devoted to Bhagavan:

Such is the greatness of God and Bhakti towards Him. May all develop Bhakti and attain Shreyas.

What is the 'WHEN' of Astrology?

ThE ASTrologiCAl world has to strive its best to find most scientific and acceptable answers for some

of the questions posed to it by many of the inquisitive and investigative clients. There are, of course, some challenges before our astrologers. one is the enigma of twins having diverse fates. Twin births interest astrologers as much as geneticists. The tatwashodana theory propounded by dr. Bh. Satyanarayana rao and the study of the concepts of naadi subdivisions can help those who want to do research in this direction. Many cases of time twins, like those of george iii of England and one Samuel hemming, with identical birth date (4th June 1738) and time of birth, who got married on the same date on 8th September 1761, with many identical events in life and finally died on a same date of 29th January 1820 due to similar causes, one ascending the throne, while the other starting an ironmonger business, as narrated by John Anthony west and Jan gerhard Toonder, can be of interest to our nascent students. The second is about induced births. This has now become more common. we have to ponder over whether such babies will have a different character, had they been born naturally. The third is about mass tragedies and whether all those involved in such tragedies must have the indications of death, astrologically. A lot of systematic and scientific investigation is called for in these directions to vindicate the cause of astrology, which can be done only by an authoritative body or university, devoted to this noble science.

Astrological thoughts must be subjected to logical and critical analysis. This is one area where almost everyone claims to be an authority of the subject and world-famous. The grocer dispensing Aspro for a customer complaining of headache cannot be a doctor, though he succeeds in bringing instantaneous relief to his customer. Similarly, every other person professing knowledge of astrology cannot be taken to be an astrologer though some of his procrastinations

may come true. Mathematical skill is important in achieving effective procrastinations and an astrologer, not adept in mathematics can fail miserably. Mihiraachaarya overemphasizes this qualification in detail, in his Samhita. The author of Prasnamarga says that the astrologer must be 'anekahoratatatwagjna panchsiddantakovida.' individual assertions and expressions, on personal convictions, bereft of scriptural support, cannot be any solution for astrological conundrums and riddles. Perhaps the academic recognition of astrology as a discipline can enhance its credibility and keep the charlatans at bay. Some universities have already included astrology in their stream of studies. This can help the students to study this ancient science in a systematized way.

let us remember the famous quote:

A child is born on that day and at that hour when the celestial rays are in mathematical harmony with his individual karma. His horoscope is a challenging portrait, revealing his unalterable past and its probable future results. But the natal chart can be rightly interpreted only by men of intuitive wisdom; these are few.

The message boldly emblazoned across the heavens at the moment of birth is not meant to emphasize fate — the result of past good and evil — but to arouse man’s will to escape from his universal thraldom. What he has done, he can undo. None other than himself was the instigator of the cause of whatever effects are now prevalent in his life. He can overcome any limitation, because he created it by his own actions in the first place, and because he possesses spiritual resources that are not subject to planetary pressure.

we have to reconstruct the true history of the ancient Bharat to help our younger generation to understand and appreciate the heritage of this mighty land and the achievements of our ancients.

let us hope that this golden day is not far away.

Datta vijaYananDateertha Swamiji

(Sri Datta Vijayananda Teertha Swamiji, the junior pontiff of Datta Peetham, referred as Bala Swamiji by Datta devotees is born in a traditional Brahmin family on 14th January, 1977 in Mysore. The boy named Harsha Vardhana Sharma had his Vedic education in Sri Ganapathy Sachidananda Veda Patashala. He entered the Mysore Ashram in the year 1985 and studied the Sastras and the Vedas. While serving Guru, he acquired the M.A. degree in Sanskrit. In 1999 he received mantra initiation from His Holiness Sadguru Sri Ganapathy Sachchidananda Swamiji. In 2004 he received the orders to become an ascetic (Sanyasa Deeksha) and was announced as the spiritual successor of Avadoota Datta Peetham on 30th May, 2004. With collosal knowledge of the shastras Sri Swamiji has been interpreting Vedas in simple language to influence many lives. He observes Chaturmasya Deeksha every year.

In addition to the above, Sri DattaVijayananda Teertha Swamiji conducts various other social and spiritual activities. In the year 2014 during the sacred period of Chaturmasya Deeksha Sri Bala Swamiji discoursed on the Yoga Vashista. These discourses are brought to you, as a series of articles. Due credit is given to Smt. Hira Duvvuri and Miss Madhu Gopi, both sincere and dedicated devotees of Datta Peetham, for translating and editing the discourses from telugu to english.Yoga Vasishta is one of the greater spiritual texts and is said to be the conversation between Lord Sri Rama and Sage Vasishta. This text goes into much details of the subtle intricacies of the mind and is said to answer all questions that arise in one’s mind.)

description of the pilgrimage undertaken by Sri rama – 3rd sargacommences.

Jeevanmukti…Sri rama stated that he felt a desire to go on a pilgrimage. After the completion of studies at gurukula, as per

tradition, the parents are offered obeisance by Sri rama and his brothers and permission is sought from them to go on a pilgrimage to seek the grace of god. The pilgrimage centers are visited and also the ways of the world are comprehensively observed. Thereafter, tradition calls for listening to discourses on Vedanta. This sequence of observances is described here.

in this sarga of Yoga Vasishtha, there is a mention that Sri rama had the darshan of Sri Subrahmanya at the pilgrimage center of Swami Malai. Therefore this indicates the antiquity of Swami Malai.

i urge every one of you to have darshan of lord MarakataSubrahmanya who is called JnanaSkanda. he is a manifestation of spiritual knowledge. he is of the form of Sattva. his spear,Velayudha has only one sharp point, encompassing the combined forces of all the three points

of a Trident. Ekagra means one-pointed. it is also called the Saktyayudha and Sulayudha. in him, all the three gunas merge and he is of the form of Sattvaguna. his spear has a single point signifying one-pointed concentration by which he grants us spiritual knowledge. Therefore he is called JnanaSkanda.

Yesterday (in the May 2015 issue of The AeM) we mentioned that the qualities of a Jeevanmukta (self-realized) soul were enumerated briefly in the last verse. It explains that being ever contented is an attribute of one who has attained enlightenment. Many people are always insecure about the wellbeing of their families and fail to achieve a state of contentment. To attain the state of Jeevanmukti, god’s grace and perfect spiritual knowledge are required. it is only by god’s grace and by the grace of Sadguru that a person acquires an interest in Vedanta. To acquire such an interest, Sri rama intended to go on a pilgrimage.

Sage Bharadwaja requested Sage Valmiki to explain to him in detail how Sri rama obtained liberation, and how, being in that state of perpetual contentment and unending bliss, he carried out all the affairs of the world. The reason he asked is that this information would help him also to attain perfection in Karma Yoga and Jnana Yoga and thereby experience eternal bliss.

We tend to question what benefit there is for us to know that someone else has attained liberation. To answer that question, Sage Valmiki is presenting this information here.

Bhramasya…here begins the actual science of Vedanta. it is a little difficult to grasp. Our intelligence does not quickly absorb this concept. it is always said that this subject can only be known by personal experience. The bliss that is obtained by this experience cannot be measured by an outside instrument or yardstick. Each individual’s own experience of it is the only true testimony for it. Until the experience comes to us, we have to keep striving and listening to Vedanta. we will know that we have attained it only when we ourselves have the experience of that immeasurable joy. No person can certify or testify for another.

Sage Valmiki is now presenting the highest reward of this science, which is the toughest subject ever to be taught,

and the manner in which this subject should be learned and applied in one’s life, in an easily understood manner. Therefore, let us first listen completely to what he has to say.

This world is illusory.Analyse it with a scientific mind. No two persons see the world the same way. how is it possible to describe the world? how c a n one determinedly say that the world is such

and such? it is based on each individual’s personal perception of it. Each person’s experience of the world is different. No two

persons see the same things in this world. People, who can see, see the world a certain

way. Those who are blind perceive it differently. People of different ages see

the world from their own different perspectives. if the world were of one fixed state, then everyone should see it the same way. But it is not so.The horrible picture that the world presents to a poverty-stricken man and the luxurious way this same world appears to a prosperous man are totally different. An enlightened

individual knows that the world does not even exist. A yogi perceives the world in a different manner. A sick person’s view of the world is different. Each individual’s

world is absolutely different from another individual’s view of the world.

Four blindfolded men, who do not know what they are being presented with, will give four totally different descriptions of an object. when they feel an elephant with their hands, each describes the different parts of the animal differently. one feels the leg and calls it a pillar. one feels the tail and says it is a snake. one feels the trunk and describes it as a banana tree trunk. one feels the ear and says it is a large flat container used to separate grains. when you put all the descriptions together, you may end up with the conclusion that it is an elephant that they are describing.Similarly, like the blindfolded men, each of us has our own different perceptions of this world. it does not appear the same to any two persons. That is enough to convince us that this world has no definite substance to it. its nature is based upon each one’s perception of it. god does not create this world. You and i create it as per our own tastes and preferences.

Bhramasya …A child, a deluded individual, and an ignorant person will declare that the sky is blue.

Page 9: June 2015 the aem

June 2015 7 The asTrological emagazine

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

No one has painted the sky blue. Science tells us that the sky is colourless and it merely appears to be blue for certain reasons. At a certain time, the sky appears totally black. At another time, it is filled with light. Again it becomes black. To a colourless sky the mind attributes different colours and features; it is the mind that gives different features to this world also.

Apunasmaranam ...what can be done about this situation? it is clear now that the world as we see it does not really exist. it is clear that we have fabricated our own separate, differentiated worlds in our own individual minds. Now, what can be done about it?what gives happiness to one, gives sorrow to another. Every object in this world has something undesirable about it. how to overcome this problem?learn to see your Sadguru or Paramatma in everything that meets your eye. Then you will eventually have a vision of Truth.

Sage Valmiki gives a simple solution. Just don’t think about it. don’t burden your thoughts with it. if you wish to study the science of Vedanta, then, the best policy is not to think about the nature of this world, its origin, its ways, or any such details.

whatever study you are focusing on at any given moment, if the mind wanders away from it, you will not have the concentration required to grasp the subject. This is everyone’s experience. learning about Paramatma/Supreme Soul is the same as learning about oneself.

There are some people, who, instead of minding their own business, are always concerned about the evil nature or the wicked doings of others. There are two negative results that are triggered by this. The first is that their own spiritual pursuit gets disturbed. The second is that they fail to see anything positive in their surroundings. Therefore, the advice given here by Sage Valmiki to Sage Bharadwaja is to simply be indifferent to this illusory world. it is best not to think about this world. That is one quality of a Jeevanmukta or liberated person.

Drisyaad…why should one ignore the existence of this world? it is because, until the preoccupation with the world is given up, liberation is not possible.it is not enough to simply ignore what we dislike. it must be remembered with the strongest conviction that whatever is visible or perceived is certainly going to be destroyed sooner or later. it is not permanent and hence, it is not the Truth. Until you learn to shut out this world from your view, it is not possible to experience the Paramatman. it is not possible to become liberated, to become a Jeevanmukta. As long as the awareness of the world is there, it is not possible to

attain liberation. Therefore, pursue this spiritual practice of shutting out the world from your mind.

what is the subject taught in Vedanta? in any story, there is a hero, a heroine, a villain, and their associates, and some theme is conveyed through the story. here, the subject matter is Paramatma or Supreme Soul. here, the idea that you are being taught by another is also an illusion. This subject can only be self-taught. what you teach yourself is Vedanta.

what is this? don’t i know myself? do i not know my own hometown? do i not know my own name? do i need you to teach me these things? Am i that stupid? i know who my friends are. i know who my enemies are. when questioned deeply as to when and why these persons became your friends or enemies, and what the relationship was with them before then, your arguments will lose their strength. The Vedanta scholars will make you poke yourself in the eyes with your own fingers with their probing questions.

(Dialogue between Vedantin and non-Vedantin…) You say you know about yourself. My name is so and so. You identify yourself with the name given to you. That is where the teachers of Vedanta will

trap you. Where did you acquire that name? They gave it to me at the naming ceremony. What was your name before then? They called me, ‘little one’, ‘baby’, ‘darling’

or ‘sweet child’. Are those your names? No. My parents merely used those terms of

endearment to address me or to refer to me. What happened to those names? They were given up because I got a regular

name. What about before you were given those

endearing names? Did you not exist? No answer. How can you say that you are your name? Hm. Yes. Now that I think about it, I have

to agree. I did not like my name and so I changed it. I shortened my name because it was too long. Therefore, I cannot be my name, because I kept changing it myself or others kept changing it.

Slowly the truth begins to dawn on us.

Page 10: June 2015 the aem

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

8 June 2015 The asTrological emagazine

we get trapped because we are unwilling to see the truth as it is. our nose was small when we were babies. Now the nose has become big. The fingers were tiny. Now they are long. You say that the baby was i, and yet, that baby is not i. what i am now, is the real i.

But this person is constantly going through a change. how do you then define the individual? Soon the skin will be wrinkled. Are you the young you or the old you?

When you were in the mother’s womb, was it the real you? But you were then invisible.

No. I am what I was when I was born after spending nine months inside the womb.

What were you when you existed in your father? My form was very subtle. What about before you entered into your father? I existed in an even more subtle form mixed

in water, food, and so on. You accept that you still existed then, although

not visible to the naked eye. Before that where were you?

I was a part of the Sun’s radiance. What was your form then? I don’t know. What about before you were a part of the Sun’s

ray? Did you have an existence then? Yes. I did exist. I was perhaps all-pervasive.

I was perhaps none other than Paramatma.

The name, the body that have been acquired by us, we mistake as our very own identity. That ignorant concept we have to discard.if you have managed to even capture a hint of this fresh concept that is enough for you, now, to embark on the study of this subject. Slowly this will get developed. A tiny spark is sufficient for now. Just two flint stones are sufficient to generate the fire of knowledge.

Just understand for now that what is visible to you as the world is an illusion.do not have the wrong notion that you alone are truth and the rest of the world is false. You are the laboratory in which you carry out the entire experiment to arrive at the final conclusion of what Truth is. The internal experiments are crucial. External study and research are not going to yield you any useful results. once you succeed in your internal research, there will be no need for any external research after that. All that exists is within. Because everything exists inside, it is projected outside for you to perceive with your senses.Without giving up ignorance, without placing firm faith

in this science, one cannot gain knowledge. Unless you listen, and you believe, it will not come to be experienced.

if you are given a brand new car and the keys to it and are asked to turn on the ignition and drive, unless you have the faith in my words and do as you are told, you will not go anywhere. The car will simply remain unused, get rusted and rot. You have to have faith, you must pay attention, and follow the instructions to gain the experience.

First you must empty the vessel and clean it. Then if you place milk in it, the milk will not spoil. So, the first step is to sweep out all the misconceptions from your mind. we have studied the examples of how children say that the sky is blue, but the well informed know that the sky is colourless. They know that the colour blue that appears in the sky is an optical illusion. Similarly, the illusion that ‘I’ am ‘the body’ should be first removed. More useful examples will be given as we proceed. There is no other method than to study this science to gain the knowledge that we seek. There is no other way for us to reach our destination.

we build a barrier around ourselves. we have to break the barriers and we must experience the wide expanse of the world. we must broaden our outlook. we are told to acquire knowledge about god. we are told that the Puranas teach us about god and that learning the stories of god will earn us spiritual merit and the grace of god.

This creates a belief in us – ‘i am separate from god’. What is the benefit to me in learning about God? I learn about a few attributes of god and then i am told that god has no form. he has no name. he cannot be seen. Then, we are told that god is everywhere. And going even beyond that, Vedanta, which aims to bestow the greatest reward upon us, says, “You are Paramatma”.

Vedanta is the highest science and the only science that makes such a bold declaration. is it possible to get any more powerful than that? The reason that the enlightened ones succeed at whatever they attempt to do is because of this limitless power which they have tapped. They have no desires. But should they have any desires, the five elements will be at their service eager to fulfill all their wishes. If the five elements are their subordinates, then is it any wonder that thousands of people flock behind them? Such is their power. But, once they reach a certain level, they will have no interest in wielding such powers.

This science is called SaareerikaMeemaamsa. You have limited your capacity to your body as its boundary. This is not the right perspective. You are without boundaries and barriers. You are Paramatma, says Vedanta.

JUPiTEr ENTErS lEo in the second/third week of July 2015. deva guru (Jupiter) enters the house of Surya (Sun), his friend. Jupiter

signifies wealth, wisdom and children while Sun signifies godliness, political power, positions of autority, health and father. Jupiter is the lord of northeast whose primary element is water while Sun is the lord of east to which the primary element fire is attached, Sun being an Agni planet. Jupiter and Sun represent Satwa guna (pious nature). in terms of royal designations, Jupiter is said to be the Prime Minister while Sun is said to be a King or Monarch. Jupiter's tenure in leo (for an year is important from the Vastu point of view. Caring for the primary element water and fire (electricity) can better your health, give you more happiness (and prosperity) and create harmony not only with your children but also your elders.

Every water area should have the adjacent earth landscaped and every garden should be activated with water. This is the basic principle that earlier texts tell us. Activation of water in the right areas of the garden can placate disturbed thinking involving financial matters while activation of earth by way of landscaping can iron out discord and disharmony. in essence every landscaping with proper use of water can create harmony and financial wisdom.

Udaka (Water)Primary ElementsVastu basically gives importance to the placement of the primary elements of nature — water, fire, space, air and earth. Proper location of the water element in the site or building can add to financial stability and better health — physical or

otherwise. different types of water usage can be considered — potable water, waste water, storage and storm water. Potable water is water suitable for human consumption and is generally referred to as drinking water that normally is supplied by the city’s corporation or municipality. waste water is the domestic water from bathroom fixtures (such as basins, showers and baths), laundry fixtures (such as clothes washing machines and

laundry troughs) and kitchen facilities (such as sinks and dishwashing machines). Storage refer to underground and overhead water tanks, pools, fountains, etc. Storm water refers to rainfall collected from roofs and ground levels that can be harvested for potable use too.

ApplicationA north facing house can have the supply (water meter) in the northeast. If you use water purifiers for drinking water, have them on the north (or east) of your kitchen or pantry. whether it is the bathroom or the kitchen or the pantry, have the water taps in the north or east while showers in the bathroom can be in the west such that they drain out from

the north. Underground tanks can be positioned in the northeast, away from the corner preferably to the north as a first option and east as a second option. They can be shaped rectangular but can also be circular shaped, like the wells of yesteryears. overhead tanks can be in the southwest of the building away from the corner preferably to the west, as the first option and south as the second option. Create a fountain, pool or pond to the north or east of the site. rain water harvesting can also be made Vastu appropriate. rain that falls on your roof and the ground is regulated through pipes to flow into a storage area that has a filtration set-up. This filtered water moves into an underground storage tank in the north or east and can be used as drinking water throughout the year without dependence on the minimal water supplied by the corporation or municipality.

CautionNever ever activate water in the form of swimming pools, fountains or underground tanks in the center of an area — site, structure or room. water areas in the southwest also are a definite ‘no’. water imbalance in these two areas can clutter relationships that may lead to disintegration of the family or business.

Electricity Board Pole and Electrical Power PanelYou draw power into your site from this public pole. Power for a south facing house can be drawn from its east pole while for a west facing house power can be drawn from the pole to its north. For a west oriented house position the panel on the west wall more to the north. Never have the panel boards to the extreme corners.

Backup generators, UPS and ComputersFor north facing residence, generators can be more to the west. within the home have the UPS either in the southeast or northwest rooms of the building. Use computers looking into the north or east. Their cpus can be to the west and south. Never ever have the power sharing plug units (needed for printers, cpus, scanners, etc) near your feet.

Fridges, Air conditioners, Electrical and Electronic Gadgets

Fridges can be in the dining room in the southeast or northwest corners so that they open either to the north or to the east. Air conditioner units can be placed on the east or west walls of the respective areas more to the south and north respectively. EMF and PregnancyNormally, a lady’s basal body warmth is higher during pregnancy. it is, therefore, advisable for the lady to keep herself away from and being too near a television, a computer or any Agni gadget (that emanates electrical or electro-magnetic energies). Foetal damage can occur if the mother or the foetus does not cool down quickly after the temperature of the core rises. Certain Finnish studies have revealed manifold increase of miscarriages in women using computers.

Concluding, never have elevators and escalators (air generating and fire activating) in the center of an area — site, structure or room. Fire areas in the southwest and northeast are also a definite ‘no’. Imbalance in these areas can contribute to health hazards relating to lower spine, muddle conjugal relationships and create sibling rivalry too.

ThE oVEr-rUliNg ProVidENCE has created all things. Stars, which rule the destinies of the nations,

human beings and the markets, are his creation.

i shall try my best to lay before you the cardinal principles of Forecasting Prices of Shares in a way so that a mere reference to raphael's Ephemeris of the year should show you when you should expect rise and fall in values of Shares. The Zodiacal signs and the longitudes of the planets, as given in raphael's Ephemeris, should be taken in consideration.

The whole Zodiac is divided into twelve divisions or houses. They are : (1) Aries or Mesha; (2) Taurus or Vrish; (3) gemini or Mithun; (4) Cancer or Karak; (5) leo or Shingh ; (6) Virgo or Kanya ; (7) libra or Thula ; (%) Scorpio or Vrishchak ; (9) Sagittarius or dhan; (10) Capricorn or Makar , (11) Aquarius or Kumbha and (12) Pisces or Meena.

Each zodiacal sign is ruled by a planet. Aries and Scorpio are ruled by Mars ; Taurus and libra by Venus ; gemini and Virgo by Mercury ; Sagittarius and Pisces by Jupiter; Capricorn and Aquarius by Saturn; Cancer by the Moon and leo by the Sun. Besides the above planets there are (1) Uranus or herschel, (2) Neptune and (3) Pluto. They have been lately discovered by the western Astronomers and they are not assigned any house lordships. dragon's head or rahu and dragon\s Tail or Kethu are also included in the list of the planets.

There are two motions of the planets: (1) direct, (2) retrograde. when the planet goes forward without stopping e.g., from Aries to Taurus, its motion is said to be direct. when at times, they slow down their speed, stop and proceed backwards for a time e.g., from Taurus to Aries, their motion is said to be retrograde or Vakri. The Sun and the Moon have always direct motion and rahu and Kethu have always retrograde motion. All the other planets have direct as well as retrograde motion during the year.

T. g. Butaney, B.A. (hons.), S.T.C.d.

Below are given the distances of the planets fron the Sun and their periods of revolution :

Besides the above planets, the Moon is at a distance of 2,40,000 miles from the Earth and goes round it in 27 £ days. rahu and Kethu live for one year and a half in each zodiacal sign.

Following are the different classifications of Zodiacal Signs.

1st Classification according to Sex:1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, 9th and 11th zodiacal signs are odd or male signs.

2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 10th and 12th zodiacal signs are even or female signs.

2nd Classification according to Elements:1. Aries, leo and Sagittarius are Fiery signs. They show

quick changes in prices.2. Taurus, Virgo and Capricorn are Earthy signs. They

show slow changes in prices.3. gemini, libra and Aquarius are Airy signs. They show

sudden changes in prices. 4. Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces are watery signs. They

show steady changes in prices.

3rd Classification:1. Aries, Cancer, libra and Capricorn are Movable signs.

They show very quick changes in prices.2. Taurus, leo, Scorpio and Aquarius are Fixed signs.

They show slow changes in prices.3. gemini, Virgo, Sagittarius and Pisces are Common

signs. They show slow changes in prices.4th Classification according to Fertility and Barrenness :1. Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces are

Fruitful or Fertile or Bullish (Teji) signs.2. Aries, gemini, leo, libra and Aquarius are Barren

or Bearish or Mandi signs.3. The rest of the zodiacal signs are Moderate sign^.From the above classification of the zodiacal signs, I put down below the results of my several years' research work in Commercial Astrology. if you carefully digest the nature of each Zodiacal Sign, you will have conquered the grand Secrets governing the rise and fall in prices of Shares traded on the Stock Exchanges of the world. You are therefore requested to pay your most earnest attention to what follows in the following paragraphs. i have purposely put all things in detail in the simplest English possible so that even a lay man, having little knowledge of English, might understand the whole subject with ease and apply the theories explained below to the Share Market with confidence.

1. Aries :—is a Male, Fiery and Movable Sign. it is a highly Bearish or Mandi sign in which very quick changes in prices occur. in short there is runaway Mandi in prices of Shares.

2. Taurus :—is a Female, Earthy and Fixed Sign. it is a Bullish or Teji sign but prices rise steadily and slowly because of its Earthy nature.

3. gemini :—it is a Male, Airy and Common sign. Besides that it is a double-bodied sign capable of upsets in prices. it is a Mandi sign. But because it is an Airy and double-bodied sign, therefore sudden rises and sudden falls in prices are very likely.

4. Cancer-:—it is a Female, watery and Movable sign. it is a Bullish or Teji sign in which prices of Shares rise handsomely and quickly because of its movable nature. This is the surest and the most dependable Teji sign.

5. leo :—is a Male, Fiery and Fixed sign. it is a Bearish or Mandi sign. Prices fall steadily and at times quickly on account of its Fiery nature. This is also a dependable Mandi sign.

6. Virgo:—is a Female, Earthy and Common sign. it is neither a good Teji sign nor a good Mandi sign. it should be termed as Moderate sign.

7. libra :—it is a Male, Airy and Movable sign. it is a sign in which sudden and quick changes in prices are likely. generally it is a Mandi sign, but one should be very careful in sensing the trend of the market because sudden and quick changes in prices are likely because of its Airy and Movable nature.

8. Scorpio .—it is a Female, watery and Fixed sign. it is a Teji sign but prices improve in a slow and halting manner to tax the patience of the operators.

9. Sagittarius:—it is a Male, Fiery, Common and Fertile sign. Besides that it is a double-bodied sign. it is a Teji sign but capable of upsets in prices, many a time.

10. Capricorn :—it is a Female, Earthy and Movable sign. There is : some improvement in prices but it is not a dependable sign.

11. Aquarius :—it is a Male, Airy and Fixed sign. it is generally a Mandi sign but sudden rises and falls in prices are likely because of its Airy nature.

12. Pisces :—it is a Female, watery and Common sign. it is a Teji sign but improvement in prices is gradual and slow.

Now let us see which planets indicate short and which planets indicate long lines of Bullishness (Teji) and Bearishness (Mandi).

a) The Moon is the fastest planet; therefore its effect is short-lived. daily Forecast is mainly due to the effects of the Moon. its greatest effect is felt in the last degrees of the sign (21 to 30).

b) The Sun transits each zodiacal sign in one month. Therefore its effect lasts for one month ; but its greatest effect is felt in the first degrees (zero to 12 degrees) in the sign.

c) Mercury transits each zodical sign in 17 or 18 days. it retrogrades three times a year. when it retro-" grades, it lives there for about 60 days. its effect is felt throughout the sign.

d) Venus transits each zodiacal sign in 25 to 26 days. its great effect is felt between 12 degrees and 23 degrees of the sign.

e) Mars transits each zodiacal sign in 45 days. its greatest effect is felt between zero degree and 12 degrees of the sign.

f) Jupiter transits each zodiacal sign in one year. it is a slow-moving planet, therefore it indicates long Teji and Mandi lines. its greatest effect is felt between 12 degrees and 23 degrees of the sign.

Page 16: June 2015 the aem

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

14 June 2015 The asTrological emagazine

g) Saturn transits each zodiacal sign in 21/2 years. it is a very slow-moving planet ; therefore it indicates either a long Teji or a long Mandi line. its greatest effect is felt between-21 degrees and 30 degrees of the sign.

h) rahu transits each zodiacal sign in 11/2 years. it is a slow-moving planet, therefore it indicates either long Teji or long Mandi line.

i) Uranus or herschel transits each zodiacal sign in 7 years. it is a very slow-moving planet. it is a planet showing very sudden and quick changes in prices either for fall or for rise.

Now you should know when you should expect great changes in prices of shares. one planet, either in Teji sign or Mandi sign, does not influence the trend of the Share Market in one way. if planets are evenly distributed in Teji and Mandi signs, narrow fluctuations in prices occur under bouts of buying and selling. But when two or more planets are in Teji sign and the rest of the planets are in moderate signs, prices of Shares improve steadily. if there are four or more planets in Teji sign, there is runaway Teji in prices- if there are two or more planets in Mandi signs and the rest of the planets are in Moderate signs, prices of Shares fall steadily. But if there are four or more planets in Mandi signs, there is runaway Mandi. But if two or three planets are in Teji signs and two or three planets are in Mandi signs, prices fluctuate both ways under bouts of buying and selling.

Aspect. —An Aspect means a certain distance between the planets. The important Aspects are (1) Conjunction, (2) opposition, (3) Square and (4) Trine. let us see their effects on Share values.

1. when the conjunction of two' planets takes place in Taurus, Scorpio, Sagittarius, Pisces and Cancer, prices of Shares rise. But if it is a conjunction of slow-moving planets e.g.. Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, rahu in Teji Sign, it indicates a long Teji line in Shares. if the conjunction takes place in Cancer, every day witnesses prices of Shares soaring to higher levels and on many a day there is "runaway Teji " when the influence of the Moon is healthy for rise.

2. when the conjunction of any two planets takes place in Mandi sign, prices of Shares fall. But if it is a conjunction of slow-moving planets, it indicates a long Mandi line in the Share Market. if the conjunction takes place in Aries, every day sees Share values drifting to lower levels and on many days prices fall in a "runaway" manner when the influence of the Moon contributes to fall.

3. when the opposition of the planets is from Aries to libra, from leo to Aquarius and vice-versa, there is good fall in values. when it is an opposition between slow-moving planets, it indicates a long Mandi line in Shares.

4. when the opposition of the planets is from Taurus to Scorpio, from Virgo to Pisces, from Cancer to Capricorn and vice-versa, there is rise in prices of Shares. But when it is an opposition between slow-moving planets, it indicates a long Teji line in Shares.

5. when there is Square (90 degrees) aspect between two planets, generally there is fall in values after rise at first. But when it is a Square aspect between slow-moving planets, fall in prices lasts for a long time.

6. when there is Trine (120 degrees) aspect between two planets, generally there is rise in prices after small initial fall. when it is Trine aspect between two slow moving planets specially between the planets in Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, the rise in Share values lasts for a long time.

Many kinds of Shares are traded on the Stock Exchanges. irons, Textiles, Jutes and Coal Shares are some of the important shares traded on the Stock Exchanges of Bombay and Calcutta. let us see in detail how their prices rise and fall.

Iron and Steel SharesMars rules iron and Steel. (1) when Mars either transits Aries, gemini, leo, libra and Aquarius or becomes retrograde in them, prices of iron and Steel Shares fall. But if at that time, Mars is opposed by some other planet from the opposing zodiacal sign or makes a conjunction with another planet in these signs, the fall in values of Steel and iron Shares is pronounced. The conjunction has the greatest effect on Steel and iron Shares in Aries and leo. (2) when Mars either transits Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius, and Pisces or retrogrades in these signs, prices of Steel and iron Shares rise. But if at that time, Mars is either opposed by another planet from the opposing zodiacal sign or makes a conjunction with another planet in the above signs, there is good rise in prices of Steel and iron Shares: in Cancer, the rise in prices is very pronounced. if there is trine aspect between Mars and the other planets specially Jupiter, there is good rise in prices. (3) Apart from Mars, when the other planets at least two or more transit Teji signs, prices of all sections in the, Share Market appreciate and there is sympathetic rise in the Steel and iron Shares. But when two or more planets transit Mandi signs, all shares decline in values and sympathetically prices of iron and Steel Shares also fall.

The Basics

EACh NAKShATrA hAS 4 PAdAS, and there are 27 Nakshatras; hence, there are a total of 108 Padas.

The Moon in the natal chart of the girl can reside in any of these 108 Padas. Similarly, the Moon in the boy’s natal chart can reside in any of the same 108 Padas. hence, a total of 108^2 = 11664 possibilities exist. The NCT gives the Kuta score of each NakshatraPada with every other NakshatraPada. Kuta scores are arrived at by 12 factors, each contributing some points to the overall tally. The total amount of points to be gained is 36. The 12 factors are dina, gana, Nadi, rasi, grahaMaitram, Vasya, Varna, Yoni, rajju, Sthreedeergah, Vedha and Mahendra. For a relationship to be compatible, a minimum of 21 points is required.

it is seen that the lowest match between any two NakshatraPadas is 2 (e.g. between Uttarabhadra 1 and Chitta 3), the highest is 35 (Mrigashira 1 and rohini 1), and the average Kuta score is 20.13. This average is not calculated as (min+max)/2, which would yield 18.5. instead, this average is calculated as the sum of all the Kuta scores divided by the total number of possibilities. Since there are 108 NakshatraPadas, and all 108 can be matched against any of the same 108 Padas, a total of 108^2 = 11664 possibilities exist. if we were to sum the Kuta scores of all these possibilities, i.e. Aswini 1stPada with Aswini 1stPada + Aswini 1stPada with Aswini 2ndPada + Aswini 1stPada with Aswini 3rdPada and so on, and then divide this sum by 11664, we get 20.13 as the average. A total of 6027 (approx. 52%) pairs of Nakshatras have a Kuta score less than 20.13 and the remaining 5637 pairs have a Kuta score greater than 20.13.

The Nakshatra in which the girl’s Moon is located is compared with the Nakshatra in which the boy’s Moon is located, and the corresponding Kuta score is noted. Most astrologers recommend a score of 21 Kutas to deem two Nakshatras as compatible (i.e. more than the average).if the minimum of 21 points is not obtained, then it is likely that the astrologer will advise against the relationship.

The IssueThere is more to a relationship that mere “happiness”. Also there are many factors that should be considered in the matching of charts (such as kujadosha, longevity, mutual disposition, Navamsa analysis and presence of yogas to name a few) and not just the Kuta score. There is much that contributes to a relationship breaking down, and a low Kuta score could be only one of them.

however, for the purpose of our discussion, let us consider “simple” fulfillment as the aim of a relationship, and also the Kuta analysis as the only means of matching charts.

This would then raise the question whether 21 is indeed a valid minimum to conclude to charts to be compatible. As mentioned before, this number seems to have been determined by the overall average, but needs to be reconsidered.

Almost 44% of all pairs of Nakshatras(5144 pairs) have a Kuta score of more than 21. This would mean that nearly half of the world’s population is compatible with an individual (as per the Kuta score). But is that true? it could be debated, because if that were the case, we would not be having so many relationship breakdowns, divorces, separations and heartbreaks in our society today. when i study the charts that have come to me, i see that although

[An Outline and Disclaimer - This article re-looks at the Nakshatra Compatibility Table (henceforth “NCT”) that is used for matching of charts in Vedic Astrology, and questions the minimum score used in the matching of charts. Although the NCT is not the only indicator of compatibility between charts, it seems to provide some insights on what the minimum score should be. The term “relationships” is used, rather than the term “marriage”, since the NCT can be used for matching all forms of relationships between couples (dating, live in, extra marital, etc.) rather than only of *married* couples. The term “relationship” in this article does not include any other family relationship, such as that between father and son, between brothers, between mother in law and daughter in law and so on, even though the NCT could be used for these relationships as well. ]

Page 18: June 2015 the aem

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

16 June 2015 The asTrological emagazine

the Kuta scores is above 21, couples have not been fulfilled in the relationship.

The question that is usually posed to an astrologer is whether an individual is compatible with another individual. The answer is usually based on which horoscope matches better with that of the individual. This seems to presuppose that the individual has toenter into a relationship with another individual, and the question whether or not the individual must be in a relationship at all, seems to be bypassed. People usually don’t ask whether it is in their best interest to be in a relationship; rather they presuppose that they haveto be in a relationship, and then ask the astrologer whether they are compatible with the person or not. i am hardly, if not ever, asked whether what would be in the individual’s best interests, whether to be single or to be with another.

i believe that we need to increase the minimum Kuta score that determines whether the charts match. we need to examine whether the individual would be fulfilled in a relationship, and pronounce that none of the charts presented will fulfill an individual if that is so the case. we do not need to succumb to the pressures of the client and deem a chart to be matching with another, if that will not bring an increased sense of contentment and wellbeing than if the individual were to be alone. The decision that is to be made during the reading, should be whether the individual is better off being single, or in a relationship with another person, rather than whether the individual should enter into a relationship with one person or the other viz. whether a relationship is beneficial for the long-term growth of the individual, or whether he/she is better off treading the life’s path alone.

But what is the minimum Kuta score that must be considered?

The Alternative ApproachA closer observation of the NCT reveals that any Nakshatra when matched with itself yields 28 Kutas. i.e. when we match one NakshatraPada with itself. if there existed another individual who was born on the exact same date, time and place of birth as oneself, and if we were to test compatibility between these two persons, then the Kuta score will be 28.

looked at differently, this could also implymatching self to oneself. it is an indicator of the default level that a person operates at, when he/she is by himself/herself.This is the bar, which could beused to compare all other relationships with. it does not mean that everyone operates at exactly the same level. rather, it will help answer the

question whether being with another person, will yield a higher level of fulfillment than being with oneself. And for this to happen, the Kuta score needs to be higher than 28. if on the other hand, the number of Kutas is less than 28, then it can be argued that the person is better off being by himself/herself.

The number of combinations where the Kutas score is greater than 28 is far lesser than the number of combinations with 21 Kutas or more. only 5.34% of matches are more than 28 (i.e. 623 combinations), a drop from 5637 pairs of Nakshatras with 21 Kutas or more. This means that the chances of finding a match with >28 Kutas reduces from 48% to a mere 5-6%. Examples of some combinations with >28 Kutasinclude: Aswini 1-4 with Bharani 1-4, Aswini 1-4 with Pushya 1-4 and Punarvasu 4 with Pushya 1-4 among others

The number of Nakshatra Padas that any given Nakshatra matches with varies from Nakshatra to Nakshatra viz. not all Nakshatra Padas have the same number of matches. For some Nakshatras there are fewer matching Padas, than for others. And this varies for girls and boys. A detailed statistical analysis for each nakshatra is given as an appendix. it will be seen that for some NakshatraPadas have no possibility of obtaining more than 28 Kutas. For example, if the boy’s Nakshatra is Krittika 1, Chitta 1-2 orMoola 1-4, then there is no NakshatraPada of the girl that can yield a Kuta score of more than 28. Similarly for the girl, Krittika 1, Aslesha 1-4, Chitta 1-2, Swati 1-4 and Moola 1-4 have no matching NakshatraPada that gives more than 28 Kutas. it can be debated whether these individuals are better off being single, since any relationship can be said to reduce their level of wellbeing than what they would have by staying single.

ImplicationsThe point i am trying to make is that astrologers need to reconsider the minimum Kuta score they prescribe. 21 Kuta points is a very low minimum. Many couples have been experiencing relationship issues, and astrologers need to raise the bar and ensure that individuals have a higher chance of a fulfilling relationship. One way of doing so, is to take 28 points as the minimum Kuta score, since that is the score obtained when any NakshatraPada is matched with itself. in case this is not obtained, then it is perfectly okay for an individual to be single and tread life’s path alone.

The Next StepsAt the time of writingthis, i don’t know what relationships with a score of greater than 28 look like. what the level of harmony in these couples would be, the kind of

Page 19: June 2015 the aem

June 2015 17 The asTrological emagazine

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

relationship that will manifest. it could be a relationship where the couple nurtures each other by their presence, rather than deplete and drain each other. it could be one where the relationship stands the test of time, but in a positive and wholehearted way, rather than force one to be in the relationship against all odds. it could imply that the couples are harmonious with each other in all matters of the relationship. The nature of such relationships is what needs to be studied further.

relationships form the backbone in indian society today. Marriage seems to be the single most sought after event that all parents wish for their children. At the same time, india is experiencing a changing landscape where relationships are concerned, with many couples exploring different forms of relationships, and many also calling off a relationship if they don’t feel fulfilled. Finding astrological solutions to ease the pain of relationships will go a long way.

apparent time at lanka on February 18, B. C. 3102 which also happened to be the date of the lunar crescent and of the first day of the Tamil month Chitra, when the Sun was in the heart of the nakshatra revati so with the Canaanitish peoples hebrews, Phoenicians, Moabites and Edomites the New Year commenced with the heliacal rising of Chitra. with the ancient Chinese too, the year opened with the dawn rising of the sieu Chio "the Spike of Corn" (Spica). The invasion of the lands of Sinner by the Amorites in the 24th century B. C. resulted in the amalgamation of the ancient Canaanitish calendar with the vernacular which commenced with the New-Moon whose mean position occurred eight days after the date of the vernalequinox. in consequence of this the Babylonians, and later the hebrews celebrated two New Year's days ; the original (civil) commencing on the 1st, Teshrit at the New-Moon of autumn and close to the date of Chitra's heliacal rising, and the ecclesiastical commencing with 1st Nisan at the New-Moon of spring. The hypsomatic year B. C. 780 is rendered doubly distinctive in that the New Moon of the 1st Teshrit "New Year's day" fell on September 29, which was the actual day of Spica's heliacal rising at Babylon and Kalakha. Also the 1st Teshrit fell on a Saturday the Sabbath day. hence it was a great Sabbath.

Professor Van der waerden discovered that the Neo-Babylonian Planetary Texts for B.C 210-100 placed the vernal-point in Aries 3° 30' as compared with the ecliptic for B. C 101—100 astron); those for B. C. 100-130 placed it in 4° 10' and those for B. C. 110-00 placed ) at in 5° 20'; the mean position being in Aries 4-20.

The Egyptian demotic Planetary Texts covering the years B.C. 15— A. d. 11 (Berlin Papyrus P 8979) give the position of the vernal-point at the commencement of Augustus' reign (Actium epoch) as Aries 4°; while

those covering the years A. d. 71-132 (Strobart demotic Tablets) give the longitude of the vernal-point at the commencement of this period as Aries 2°.

if the sidereal longitudes of the vernal (or autumnal) point as derived from the hypsomatic year, the epochs of Naburiannu and Kidmnu, the mean position of the Neo-Babylonian Texts and the Strobart Tablets are graphed the resultant " curve " is revealed as an almost faultless straight line that runs diagonally across the paper (See Fig.) confirming not only the authenticity of the hypsomatic date but that the ayanamsa was measured from Spica in Virgo 29-0 (or Aldebaran in Taurus 15-0) as the fiducial star.

Calendar of Esnehin the religious calendar, known as the "Calendar of Esneh" found inscribed on the southern inner wall of the facade of the Ptolemaic Temple of Khnum at Esneh, mention is made of three separate festivals of the New Year. The first fell on the 1st day of the 1st month of the season Akhet (1st Thoth), the second styled the New Year's day of the Ancients fell on the 9th day of the same month and the 3rd on the 26th day of the second month of Shemu (26th Payni). The festival of the 29th day of the Moon is also recorded as happening on the 20th day of the fourth month of Shemu (20th Mesore).

The native Egyptian year was one of 365 days with no provision for the intercalation of leap-days. in consequence the calendar receded one day in every four years (tetraeteris) in respect of the Julian year returning to its place in that year after a period of 1460 years, known as a sothic cycle. Accordingly this moving calendar was variously styled Vague, wandering or receding.

But the Egyptians also acknowledged a fixed calendar, which commenced with the heliacal rising of Sepdet, the "Arrow" star, otherwise known as Sothis, Sirius or the dog-star, the brightest star in the heavens. during the Ptolemaic period this star rose on July 18 (Julian) for

Page 22: June 2015 the aem

the latitude of Memphis—the lanka of Egypt. Equating the 3rd New Year's festival as that of the rising of the " Arrow " star, July 18 would make the 1st day of the native calendar tally with September 26th. New Year's day of the native calendar only fell on September 26th during the tetraeteris B. C. 137-134 inclusive (right within the Ptolemaic period). The actual year must have been B. C. 137 for in that year there was a New Moon on August 13th B. C. 136 and the 29th day would fall on September 10th, which was the 20th day of the last month (20 Mesore). hence the Esneh calendar commenced on September 26, B. C. 137 and ended on September 25, B. C. 136.

The second festival of the New Year, the New Year's day of the Ancients fell on the 9th day of the 1st month which equates with october 4th, Julian, and in the year B. C. 137 for the latitude of Memphis this was the precise date of the heliacal rising of Spica (Chitra). here we have monumental evidence of the highest importance that the calendar of antiquity commenced with the dawn rising of Spica. if further testimony is needed it will be found in the smaller of the two zodiacs of Esneh where Spica, symbolised by a large figure of a Sphinx having the head and breasts of a woman and the flanks, claws and tail of a lion (Virgo-leo) is seen ascending in Virgo crowned with Re', the rising Sun. Over the figure of the lion in both the Esneh zodiacs as well as in that of the Temple of hathor at denderah, the hieroglyphic ideogram 'seshed ', meaning the "last" will be seen in the form of a meandering snake. For the Egytians Virgo was the first of the constellations and leo the last, and this seems to have been so from the most remote times. Accordingly Spica was read as being in Virgo rather than at the beginning of libra.

Theban Star Calendarswhen we push further back into Egyptian monumental records we come across the famous Theban Star Calendars of the ramesside kings (20th dynasty). in these calendars Arcturus and Spica form the constellation of the Mooring Peg with the point in Spica. it is called mnit (Menyet). in all the celestial diagrams from the XViii dynasty down to Roman times that adorn the inside of coffin lids or the ceilings of sarcophagi i sis, the mother of the gods is shown as an erect female hippo potamus, styled hesamut, "Mother of the Cord". in her hands she holds Menyet, the Mooring-peg to which is attached a cord stretching from Aka, the "hoof" of Meskhetyew "Bull's Foreleg". This constellation is identical with Ursa Major " great Bear " and the hoof-star is Benetnasch, (Eta Ursaj

minoris). in B. C. 2791 Benetnasch and Spica formed their conjunction in right Ascension 9h. 18m. 32s. culminating at apparent midnight on March lst when the Sun entered the constellation of Sr-t (Seret) the " Sheep" (Aries). Benetnasch's declination was then N74° 54' and Spica's N 14° 19' a difference of over 60°, hence an arc of a great circle of the sphere passing through them and produced in both directions divided the heavens in twain, cutting through Thuban (Alpha draconis) the, then, Pole Star, and at right angles to Sirius. According to the generally accepted chronology this was the time of the iV dynasty, the age of Seneferu, Cheops, djetefera, Chephren and Mycerinus the great pyramid builders.

one of the most important ceremonies in the foundation of Egyptian temples was known as Pedjeshes (Pedj = "to stretch", Shes="a cord ") and it forms the subject of one of the chief monumental ornaments in the temples of Abydos, heliopolis, denderah and Edfu. The reigning pharaoh and a priestess, personifying Seshat, the goddess of- writing proceeded to the site, each armed with a golden mallet and a peg connected by a cord to another peq. Seshat having driven her peg home at the previously prepared spot, the king directed his gaze to the constellation of the Bull's foreleg. having aligned the cord to the hoof as seen through the visor formed by Seshat curious head-dress he raised his mallet and drove the peg home, thus marking the position of the axis of the future temple.

As the result of his review of dr. gunter-Martiny's work on the survey of Assyrian sancturies Professor P. V. Neugebauer discovered that all the Assyrian temples, from B. C. 2930 to B. C. 603, whose foundation dates were recorded, were orientated at dawn on New Year's day to the point of intersection with the horizon of a great circle of the sphere, passing through Benetnasch and Spica, exactly the same circle that figured in the Egyptian ceremony of the Pedjeshes. There can be no doubt that for the ancient peoples of Egypt and Babylonian and Assyria Chitra (Spica) was their marking star.

The names of the zodiacal constellations accord with the nature of the events that attended their acronychal risings in Egypt, or what is tantamont to the same thing when the Moon was full in them. Thus after sunset on midsummer's day, the stars of Capricorn rose. The goat on the mountain top symbolised the Sun's maximum elevation on midsummer's day. in the Egyptian zodiacs Capricorn is shown with the tail of a fish because it was at this time

the waters of the Nile began to rise and the river became more plentiful with fish. Aquarius, represented by Hapy, the youthful god of the Nile pouring out water from his two urns on to the two lands of Egypt rose at eventide when the Nile commenced to overflow its banks and spread over the lands. The evening rising of Pisces found the whole of Egypt turned into a vast sea brimful of fish when the only transport was by means of boats. The acronychal rising of Taurus found the waters of the Nile had so far receded to permit the oxen being yoked and the lands ploughed. it was during the winter rising of Cancer at sunset that the great festival of the re-Birth of the Sun, on the day of the winter

solstice occurred. The Egyptians symbolised the month by Kheper, the scarab, god of re-birth and transformation. it was also the season of the sowing (" seizing ") of seed and the Babylonians symbolised the month by shittu the " Crab " burying itself, like a seed, beneath the sands. Just as the hornedgoat (Capricorn) on the mountaintop betokened the Sun's maximum elevation at the summer solstice, sp the Crab, one of the lowest placed of animals indicated mid-winter when the Sun was at its lowest elevation. The acronychal rising of Spica, " the spike of corn" in the constellation Virgo fittingly, coincided with the commencement of the harvest ; while that of the rising

Page 24: June 2015 the aem

www.astrologicalmagazine.com

of libra witnessed the harvest being weighed, sold and stored. The evening rising of Scorpio ushered in the deadly Khamsin, bringing with its pestinential hot sand storms hordes of scorpions to infest the land. with the Nile easily fordable and the harvest secure, the losing of the military Sagittarius found the Egyptian army ready to set out on foreign expeditions.

An examination of any of our modern graeco-roman staratlases will show that the four successive constellations Capricorn, Aquarius, Pisces and Aries are represented as being amphibious if not entirely aquatic in form. Capricorn appears as a goat-fish, Aquarius is but the Greek variant for happy, the god of the Nile. At the feet of Andromeda swim the tethered fish (Pisces) while beneath the reposing Aries lies Cetus the Seamonster. when the Moon was full in these constellations (or when they rose at sunset) which happened during the summer months of July, August, September and october the Egyptian inundation was in full swing. The representations of the con stellations are but hieroglyphic ideograms in which can be read the whole story of the Egyptian inundation. But they bore no correspondence whatsoever to the Euphratian inundation which took place in spring.

The names of the regents or gods associated with the Egyptian sothic months—those commencing with the day of the heliacal rising of Sirius at Memphis—afford an interesting sidelight to the astronomy of ancient Egypt. The Egyptian Calendar of 36'5 days comprises 12 months of 30 days to each month with the remaining 5 days — the Epagomenas—tagged on to the end of the year. The regents are of considerable antiquity and will be found on the celestial diagrams of Senmut (XViii dynasty), the Karnak clepsydra of Amenophis hi (XViii dynasty), and the celestial diagram of ramesses ii (XiX dynasty) ; that is about the 16th and 15th century B.C.

The above (See Table on page 21), Julian dates of commencement of the fixed sothic months remain constant for B. C. 4000, 3000 and 2000. in B. C. 1000 they advanced by one day and in A. d. 1 by two days.

it will be noted that Ptah is the regent of the 2ud month during which the Sun passed through the constellation Virgo. Ptah, one of the oldest of the Memphic gods is usually shown seated at the potter's wheel fashioning the egg of the world. he was the god ' par excellence ' of the workshop, of sculpture, engraving and handicraftmanship generally. The greeks likened him to their god. hephaestus or to the roman Vulcan. Astrologically these characteristics are precisely those traditionally associat ed with the constellation Virgo.

House of GebThe Egyptians regarded the earth as the "house of geb", the underworld of darkness as the " house of Seth " and the visible heavens as the " house of horus" (the Sun). in the diagram of Senmut the legend for the third month runs " heaven together with its stars are hathor (i.e., the house of horus). in the great temple of the goddess hathor at denderah her head marks the place of the lagna or Ascending degree. in the "Calendar of the Ancients " this would be the first month of the year.

Three regents are listed for the fourth sothi.c month. The word Ka could mean a phallus, a bull, or a ghost or astral body dependent on the determinative. here no determinative is given. it is the month when the Sun passed through the constellation Scorpio and in zodiacal melothe-sia Scorpio is held to "rule" the generative organs. incidentally the determinative for a bull was a phallus, and in the late period the phallus came to be the common symbol for the opposite con stellation Taurus. The lioness headed goddess Sekhet typified the scorching heat of the Sun which was particularly' intense in Egypt during this month. in the circular zodiac of denderah Sekhet in the form of a lioness is seen beneath the constellation Scorpio trying to quench her thirst.

The association of the ithyphallie god Min, armed with the flagellum is unusually appropriate to the 5th month, corresponding to Sagittarius. in graeco-roman astrology Sagittarius is portrayed as the trainer of fiery animals or as the teacher curbing rebellious boys, the latter being represented by gemini, the twin children. it is a curious fact that more sadists are, born during the Sun's passage through Sagittarius and more masochists through its passage of gemini than at any other period of the year.

The "great Fire" regent of the 6th month, corresponding to Capricorn is also highly signifi cant. Capricorn is the hypsoma (exaltation) of Mars and in roman astrology Vesta, goddess of the Flame was assigned to this constellation. Manilius the roman astrologer of the Augustian period writes about Capricorn in this wise:—

"But sacred Vesta guards they fatal fire, And thence 'tis guess'd what minds they rays inspire,Contracted goat; by thee that art's infus'd Which fire assists, and where a flame is us'd ; By thee the miners burn the womb of earth,And see the place of metals fatal birth : By thee they melt ; by thee they work the mould, Refine, and stamp it into mighty gold ". According to Phaladeepika. among all the lagnas, the Moon's lagna (Chandra lagna or the sign in which the Moon is posited), is most important for assessing the effects of transits (Gocharaphalam). it is, therefore, imperative to make predictions about effects of the transits of planets through various signs from the sign occupied

[Hypothesis: Transit of Saturn is reckonedfrom New Moon position, transit of Saturn 8thhouse from Sun/Moon/Mars/ Mercury. The role of Naidhana Tara brings traumatic events and loss of lives and property.

by the Moon. however, agood practice will be to examine the transit from Moon sign(Mathi), Sun sign(Kathi), lagna (vidhi), dasalord and transit of Saturn over natal grahas.

when Saturn transits the house owned by his enemy it is called ‘deena’ – an unfriendly house. Saturn in Scorpio is considered transiting his enemy’s house. As Mars and Saturn are unfriendly, Saturn will obviously behave in an awkward manner in Scorpio.

As per the conventional transit Saturn in the 8th house is considered very unfavorable. it is known as ‘astamattushani’ .The 8th house is house of misfortune, loss of lives, depicts mortality, acute financial loss, disasters, misfortunes andunexpected events. it also depicts natural catastrophes including strikes by intruders or subversive elements. Cyclones, heavy flooding, disruption of flow and burst of dams.

Scorpio as watery sign, it is fixed sign where Moon gets debilitated. The owner Mars owns the house of Aries and Scorpio, Aries is a sign for debilitation of Saturn. it is classified as occult as 8th house rules house of soul and thus deals with longevity.

Stellar transit planets are said to do better during the transit in the 2,4,6,8 and 9th star reckoned from the Moon. Some astrologers opine such a stellar transit should also be observed from lagna, Sun and even the dasa lord. A further extension of these may be necessary to analyze mundane events based on current happening.

Textile Mills Shares, Jute Shares and Coal SharesVenus rules Cotton and Textile Mills Shares; Mercury rules Jute Shares; and Saturn rules Coal Shares. The rules enunciated in the above para regarding Steel and iron Shares should apply to Textile, Jute and Coal Shares also in toto. You have to substitute the word " Mars" with "Venus" in case of Textile Mills Shares ; with" Mercury " in case of Jute Shares ; and with "Saturn" in case of Coal Shares. only in case of Jute Shares, please take note of the following two facts : (1) when Mercury is combust i.e., asta in Aries, leo, libra, gemini and Aquarius, prices of Jute Mills Shares fall after first good rise. (2) when Mercury is combust i.e., asta in Taurus, Cancer, Scorpio, Sagittarius and Pisces, prices of Jute Mills Shares rise.

let us recapitulate the important factors governing the rise and fall in prices of Shares.

1. observe whether the majority of the planets are in Teji signs or in Mandi signs. if the majority of the planets are in Teji signs think that improvement in Share values would soon ensue. if the majority of the planets are in Mandi signs, think that decline in Share values is knocking at the door of the Share Market,

2. See whether one or two major slow-moving planets like Mars, Jupiter, Saturn and rahu transit Teji sign or Mandi sign. if two of the above planets are in Teji sign, then expect good Teji in Share values. whenever the Moon, the Sun, Mercury and Venus transit Teji signs during these periods, good rise in prices of Shares takes place. But if two or more planets transit Mandi signs, good fall in values of Shares should

take place, whenever the Moon, the Sun, Mercury and Venus pass through Mandi signs.

Again when the planets oppose each other from Teji signs e.g., from Cancer to Capricorn, from Taurus to Scorpio and vice-versa expect good Teji in Shares. if the opposition is between slow-moving planets, it should prove a long Teji period. But if the opposition proceeds from Mandi signs i.e. Aries to libra, leo to Aquarius and vice-versa, it should prove a good. Mandi period in Share values.

Again observe if there is Square aspect between slow-moving planets. if it is formed, the decline in Share values should be steady. if there is Trine aspect between slow-moving planets, think that Share values would improve. But if this Trine aspect is between the planets in Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, one should expect handsome rise in Share values alround.

on the day the Moon transits Aquarius, Aries and leo, the Share values would decline on those days provided the longitude of the Moon is not between 16 and 18 degrees of those signs. Between these degrees, the Share values rise though the Moon is in Mandi sign. They are very sensitive degrees causing rise in Share values in Mandi signs.

on the day, the Moon transits Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces, Share values appreciate. if there is sudden fall due to other factors, prices recoup to the opening levels after first fall.

i have great hopes that if you study what has been said above with care, you will be able to apply these theories with ease to the Share Market and be pleased to see that they yield you at least 90 per cent, correct results. (FOR)

You have to find yourself. You have to discover yourself. You have to search for a lost object where you have dropped it. it is useless searching for it elsewhere, saying, “o there is light there, so i will search for it there.” it is foolish to do so. No matter how hard you search, you will not find it anywhere else except where you have dropped it. it is like a woman wearing a very lightweight necklace and looking for that same necklace all over the world, not realizing that it is right there adorning her neck. She and all her friends frantically searched for it. Finally, another friend, upon inquiring what they were all searching for, pointed to her neck, and said, i see it on your neck. is that what you are all searching for? Yes!!! You thought you had lost it and everyone else also thought that you had lost it, and all of you are searching for it feverishly, she exclaimed.Similarly, we are searching for ourselves. Finally, Sadguru comes and shows us that we have the answer within ourselves. That job Sage Valmiki is doing for us here. That friend is Sadguru. The answer will be found only when you search within.

Andhakasura searched for Siva everywhere. he did not find Him anywhere. Finally he called out, “Siva, where are you? Come and appear before me.” Siva tore open Andhakasura’s stomach and came out. i am right here, he said.

Until we let go of this world, we will not find ourselves. We try to attract everyone else in this world, but we ignore our own existence. it is only when we stop searching outside and when we begin to look for ourselves within ourselves, that we will succeed in experiencing liberation.

Next, Valmiki gives us the means.

Until one gets enlightened, the effort must continue to cleanse oneself of sins, to serve Sadguru, and to keep listening and pondering over this subject. one must continue to dispel doubts and earning spiritual merit.

Sacheha …if you listen to it fully, and practice it completely, you will attain the result. Tatvamaapsyasi – Tat TvamAsi. There is no other way.

in Sri Swamiji’slife history, what did Sri Jayalakshmi Mata say to Satyanarayana when he asked her repeatedly, “who am i?” For that one question, you yourself have to find the answer. It is a search that each person has to make on his or her own.

what does the hasta MastakaPrayoga by Sadguru do? it empowers you to obtain the required spiritual knowledge. By that gesture, he removes all the hurdles in your path when you embark on that search. But, after receiving such grace, if you do not contemplate, if you do not do the required sadhana, if you choose to remain idle, you will gather hurdles in your path once again. The path that has been made smooth by Sadguru has to be used by the seeker to attain liberation. That is what is suggested here in a subtle manner. others can show the way, but they cannot show you to you. You have to discover yourself. it is not something that can be given to you. it is not something that can be purchased. it is an experience that you have to strive to achieve for yourself. if you do not put in the effort, it will elude you. At least listen to discourses such as these and then deeply churn the subject in your heart. Until your experience is complete, do not allow your persistent efforts to become slack.

Jagadbhramoyam …it will come to your experience that even this illusion of the world does not exist. A middle school student would have learned that the sky is really not blue. So, easily that misconception leaves him. Similarly, the illusory nature of the world also will easily become apparent to you if you put in the required effort.

Drisyam …what is being seen is not real. The sense organs are supplying this data to the mind and it is the mind that is receiving this illusory input and clinging to it. we mistakenly attribute strength to the sense organs and give them credit for bringing us all these experiences. in the process we forget the role of the mind. in reality, it is the mind that rules. it eagerly receives the input from the senses and hoards them all.

Tie a thread to each of five small stones. Place them in a circle. Bring all the five threads together and tie a larger stone with them and keep the larger stone in the middle of the circle. Now begin wetting the five small stones. You will notice that the threads which absorb the water from the small stones will pass on the moisture to the larger stone in the middle, making the large stone wet.

You have to clean the mind. You have to clear from the mind all the collected debris, which you have gathered through the sense organs. You must refrain from collecting new data from the senses. The method for this is to begin

to see Sadguru in everything that the senses perceive. or see the Paramatman in everything that the senses bring in. You have to acquire that state. That state will reward you with the fruit of bliss called liberation. Brahmananda will be attained. That is what this Sastra grants.without attaining this capacity to free ourselves from the burden carried by the mind, even if spiritual practice is carried out for a million births, you will not experience that transcendental bliss. You have to remove this burdensome luggage from your mind. when V.i.Ps travel, they do not carry much luggage. wherever they go, they will have all the necessary comforts provided. They do not need to carry their bed sheets, toothbrushes, and so on. The enlightened ones travel through life like that without carrying any mental baggage. The ignorant ones are caught in this deep ditch called worldly entanglements and find it impossible to get out of the pit. They keep struggling there endlessly going round and round making futile attempts.

when an animal gets trapped in a ditch like that, sometimes knowing that it is going to die there anyway, some people keep shovelling dirt into the ditch to bury the animal to shorten its misery. A clever animal under such circumstances, will step over the dirt at every stage, and using the shovelled dirt as steps, will eventually get out of the ditch to level ground. like that, we should use using the same earthly dirt that gets heaped upon us by us cleverly, to pave the path to help us get out of our rut.

A very important point is said here. we say that Paramatma is eternal, pure, and without beginning or end. Now, if each of us attains that knowledge ‘i am Paramatma’, then what happens to this world? what happens to all the ignorant people who remain without the enlightenment that i have received? only a person with incomplete understanding will ask this question. A liberated person will not ask this question. But we have to give the ignorant man an answer.Just as Truth is eternal, illusion/Maya is also eternal. Just because you became enlightened, it is not required that everyone in the world should also simultaneously get illumined. You need not worry about it. if you are hungry and food is available, you should eat it. You need not sit there at such times and worry about all the hungry people in the world and refrain from eating your food. No one does that. Just because your hunger is satisfied, it does not mean that everyone else in the world is going to feel full. You may get enlightened. But ignorance that is illusory may remain in this world.

in the case of Krishna or Sadguru, when they consume food saying, “Brahmarpanam”, all hungry beings get satisfied. This story is also told. That is because He is

of Brahma Svaroopa. Before taking a meal, when the Pranahutis are offered, it is a prayer that all those in the world who are unable to earn food, should also be fed. By the power of your prayers, their hunger will be satisfied. Not everyone has the resources to engage in Annadana. Many have just enough to feed themselves. For such persons to gain spiritual merit, this offering of daily prayer for the satisfaction of hunger of all others is a good option. This is within the means of everyone. it costs no money.

Unless ignorance is removed, spiritual knowledge will not be gained. The power to destroy ignorance and to bestow knowledge is contained in this sacred work, Yoga Vasishtha.

Aseshena …A question arose in the mind of Sage Bharadwaja. There are many scriptures in the world that claim that liberation may be obtained by the performance of Upasana. Many are under the false notion that Upasana is easy. But performing Upasana is not easy. Upa+asana means to remain close to god. we may choose to stay by him. But he should allow us to remain close to Him. This process is very difficult. Saayujya, Saalokya, Saameepya, and so on. After much effort, only some who have a great amount of accumulated merit from previous births may obtain result. Someone like dhruva had great merit earned in his past lives that granted him easy success.

To listen to Vedanta Sastra filled with stories to remove the contamination from the mind, to practice the teachings, is easy. it is a smooth journey that will reach you to your destination without any strain. This takes you along in small easy stages, step by step with no frustration. That is the specialty of Yoga Vasishtha. The other method does not come with any guarantees. This method assures success.

Ksheenaayaa…Examples are a plenty in this work. once, the odors stuck to the mind are removed, freshness is enjoyed.

in a kitchen, the cooking odors stick to the draperies and the moment you step into the room, the odors begin to bother the nose. once the draperies are given to the cleaners and come back smelling fresh, you feel much better.

Just because you like fragrance, can you bathe in a tubful of perfume? Excess of anything is unpleasant and harmful. No matter how thick the snow cover may be, once the sun begins to shine during the spring season, the snow has no choice but to melt. Even glaciers melt. Similarly, once, with the acquisition of knowledge through meaningful

Page 29: June 2015 the aem

examples, when our inner odors of ignorance are removed, Truth will disclose itself with certainty.

Next, Sage Valmiki explains that Sri rama requested permission from his father to go on a pilgrimage. The reasons given by Sri rama for wanting to go on a pilgrimage are also enumerated. King dasaratha felt very happy to hear this wish expressed by his son. he gladly gave his consent and sent his four sons on an extensive pilgrimage with the required entourage. They visited several places in the himalayas such as Badari, and Kedar in North india. They visited Nepal, Afghanistan, several shrines in South india, all the oceans, and sacred rivers such as ganga, Yamuna, Saraswati, and Chandrabhaga, and returned home. The pilgrimage cleansed their hearts.

in the MarkandeyaPurana, a pilgrimage is referred to as Kriya Yoga. Yoga in the form of any action is Kriya Yoga. Kriya means action. Visits to the ashram also count as a practice of Kriya Yoga. Seeing guru and listening to guru is also Kriya Yoga. After the description of the pilgrimage, the 4th sarga begins where the story takes a different turn. we will discuss all of that tomorrow.

First column gives the English dates and next to it the names of the regional months and dates. The ending moments of Tithi, Nakshatra, Yoga and Karana are given in the 24 hour clock extending to 30 hours.

of the Nityayogas, Vishkumbha, Parigha, Vyatipata, Vajra, Vyaghata, Vaidhruthi, Sula, ganda and Atiganda are generally spurned for auspicious events and they are marked in red in the Panchanga. Vydhruti pervades from 346º40’ to 360º and Vyatipata from 213º20’ to 226º40’ of the sum of the Nirayana longitudes of the Sun and the Moon. Vydhruti and Vyatipata punyakaala are observed on the day when the yogas prevail for 1½ hours or more, when Sraddha is performed by the astute. These two belong to the shannavati -96- Sraddhas ordained for a householder. Considering the astronomical implications, the Sayana Vydhruti and Vyatipata days are also indicated in the Panchanga. The auspicious Amritayoga and Siddhayoga and inauspicious Maranayoga and Prabalarishtayoga come under Amirtaadiyoga scheme and are different from the Nityayogas.

The Karana is the half of the Tithi. They are mainly classified as Sthira - fixed or immovable and Chara or moveable. The Chara Karanas are seven in number and the Sthira are only four. The fixed ones are inauspicious. They are Sakuni, Chatushpada, Naga and Kimsatugna. The seven movable Karanas are in their order, Bava, Baalava, Kaulava, Taitila, gara, Vanija and Vishti (or Bhadra.) Among the movable Karanas Vishti or Bhadra is considered to be of dreadful. The forbidden Karanas are marked in red for easy identification.

We have most of our religious observances pegged on to the Tithis. Pournamipooja Chandradarisana, Sankataharachaturthi Vrata, Shastivrata, Ekadasi Vrata and Pradosha are specially mentioned in the Panchanga. Pournamipooja is done in the evenings on days the full Moon is prevalent. Chandradarisana is observed on the evening on the day when the crescent Moon appears for the first time in the west after the Amavasya. Chaturthi of the Krishnapaksha or Bahula Chaturthi of every month is known as Sankataharachaturthi. The evenings of Sukla and Krishna Trayodasi days are specially observed as Pradosha Vrata days.

12 hours of the day and 12 hours of the night are divided into 8 sections each having duration of 90 minutes or 1½ hours each. The seven Upagrahas kaala, paridhi, dhooma, ardhaprahara, yamakantaka, indrachaapa and Maandi take over by turns their ruler-ship of the seven sections, each day, leaving one to rahu. The period ruled by rahu is called raahukala which is generally considered inauspicious. The timings of the ruler-ship of raahukala for the seven weekdays are furnished in the table below.

The timings given are for days when the sunrise is 06.00 AM and sunset 06.00 PM. For calculating the exact duration of the period of raahukalam, on any day, the duration of the daytime must be ascertained first and that has to be divided by 8. The result

For example take a Sunday having the sunrise at 06.20 AM and sunset at 05.40 PM. The duration of the daytime will then be only 11h.20m.., or 680minutes. divided by 8 the sectional value will be only 85 minutes. raahukala generally for Sunday is from 16.30 to 18 hrs. in this case raahukala must therefore be only
