Gardening by the Book

Daylilies are the perfect perennial. They are hardy and low-maintenance in a wide range of cli-mates and grow well in almost any soil and light conditions. Many perennials bloom in the spring before the daylily season. Adding daylilies ex-tends the flowering time for the whole planting. The extraordinary selection of colors, textures, fra-grances and sizes of the plants make them favor-ites of many gardeners. Daylilies: The Perfect Perennial (Storey Pub., 1991) provides advice for both novice and experienced growers. Beginning practical infor-mation details how to choose, grow and maintain daylilies. Popular types include dwarf, double, fra-grant and ruffled. Pest control advice is given. Cut flower arrangement tips are included. Horticultur-ists will be interested in the chapters on starting new plants from existing ones. Lewis and Nancy Hill share their wisdom and experience of more than 40 years of growing daylilies. Large color photographs of individual flow-ers are the highlight of Daylilies for the Garden (Timber Press, 1999). Australian author Graeme Grosvenor includes tips on photographing the plants. History, cultivation, maintenance and prop-agation details provide comprehensive infor-mation. The list of recommended varieties is divid-ed into large-flowered, small-flowered and minia-ture plants. A discussion of companion plants is an added bonus. The descriptions and explanations of classifications are informative. Contributing authors, each an expert in a specific aspect of daylily gardening, make The Daylily: A Guide for Gardeners (Timber Press,

2004) invaluable to growers. Various types of hy-brids are detailed along with advice for growing. Details of exhibiting daylilies in shows along with names of award winning plants are of interest to the more experienced gardener. Pest and disease control are given although the genus is known for minimal problems. The history of the modern day-lily makes informative reading. The Gardener’s Guide to Growing Daylilies (Timber Press, 2002) is a practical guide for gar-deners and collectors. Organized by color, the A-Z directory within each group has descriptions with growing hints for each flower. Special chapters on miniatures, spiders and exotics are all included. Planting companions and schemes are added fea-tures. British author Diana Grenfell gives ac-counts of daylily collections worldwide. The New Encyclopedia of Daylilies: More Than 1700 Outstanding Selections (Timber Press, 2008) has close-up photographs which are accom-panied by the description including the color, size, pattern, bloom season, and parentage. This refer-ence is for the nursery professional, hybridizer, designer or enthusiast, who works to explore the plants’ potential. Descriptions also include awards won from the American Hemerocallis Society. Mary Moore Tulsa City-County Library
