Suede over-the-knee boots Suede adds texture, and over- the-knee boots create a great city-slicker look if you wear them over fitted trousers with a chic, sheer-sleeved top. Metallics and embellishment These glamorous finishes are an excellent way to take a simple dress from day to night. Just add metallic or embellished heels and big, statement jewellery and you’re done! Bright colours and bold prints (left) or retro details, like steel heels, are another way to go. And keep an eye out for embroidered shoes and boots. They have a heritage feel, which is romantic when worn with a silk-chiffon dress or a loose kaftan layered over a knitted polo neck, as seen in my new winter collection. 2 Invest in a classic winter shoe… Black, patent-leather pumps are effortless, elegant and easy to wear, and they work throughout the year. 3 … And in the must-have boot A point-toe boot with a block heel and high-shine finish is perfect this season. 4 Look out for this when buying shoes A poorly made shoe will bend or come apart after a couple of wears, so always check the stability of the heel. Look for rubber on the heel and sole, so that you can walk with both safety and ease. And pay attention to the lining. A synthetic lining can become very painful to wear, as it will not absorb moisture and it won’t allow the foot to breathe. Rather look for a shoe with a leather insole and smooth lining wherever the shoe touches your foot. 5 Avoid this trend Toe shoes – those rubber ‘barefoot’ athletic shoes. They really have to be the worst-looking things a woman can put on her feet! And if looking ugly weren’t bad enough, they also sound awful when you hear them coming down the street. 6 Take care of your shoes, so they last and look good for years and years, like this Try to avoid uneven surfaces, like cobblestones and gritty paving, as this can damage the heels of your shoes. If this does happen, make sure that you get the rubber replaced immediately, as it’s easy to do now before the heel lift wears down and the rubber becomes rough and uneven. Proper storage is a must if you want to prolong the life of your shoes. Protect them from dust by keeping them in shoe bags. And invest in a good shoe rack, as this maintains the proper space between each pair of shoes, and saves them from damage.
