LODGE HISTORY ANDCHARTER DAY DINNER

It was 1868 when Lincoln was in its infancy when the following announcement appeared in the Nebraska Commonwealth newspa-per:

A.F. & A.M. – All Masons in good standing, who wish to participate in the formation of a Masonic Lodge in this town are hereby requested to attend a meeting for that purpose at the Masonic Hall on Friday, March 6th, 1868 at 1 o’clock p.m.

It was reported that a large number of brethren attend that meeting. Cyrus Carter was elected Worshipful Master, S.B. Linder-man, Senior Warden and John Cadman Junior Warden.

The following article appeared in The Acacia:

“Lincoln Lodge No. 19, A.F. & A.M., was first convened under dispen-sation on the 12th day of May, A.D. 1868, in the upper rooms of what is now known as Lahr’s hardware store on North 10th Street in the City of Lincoln, Nebraska, with Bro. Henry s. Jennings as its Worship-ful Master, Rev. Henry T. Davis as Senior Warden, Hugh W. Merrill as Secretary and Severin B. Linderman as Senior Deacon, Bros. Walter J. Harris, Charles C. Cook, Westcott R. Field, Alfred L. Palmer and John Cadman also being in attendance. At that meeting the first Tuesday evening in each month was selected as the regular meeting night of the Lodge and which has been observed until this time.”

2014 Nebraska Grand Chapter

“Stars Across The Prairie”

Dear Masonic Family,

Wow! What an enthusiastic and fun year the “Stars across the Prairie” Eastern Star Grand Family had traveling across our beautiful state and attending the various Masonic activities.

It has been a pleasure for me to represent Nebraska Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star this past year. The first por-tion of the 2013 – 2014 Grand Chapter year was spent meeting Past Grand Master Tom Hauder and Lady Ann at several activ-ities --- Masonic Eastern Star Band Camp and Shrine Bowl Parade; Grand Assembly for the International Order of the Rain-bow for Girls; Grand Bethel for Nebraska Job’s Daughters In-ternational; DeMolay Conclave; Masonic Charities Golf Tourna-ment; the Alzheimer’s Walk in Omaha and Grand Lodge just to name a few. What fun we had greeting everyone and especial-ly enjoying the ENTHUSIASM of our Youth Groups.

In February, I attended Grand Lodge and witnessed the Installation of a dear friend, Grand Master Joe McBride and Lady Lori. Again, we met at Grand York Rite and then in May at our Grand Chapter Ses-sion. I was pleased to welcome

Joe and Lady Lori. I was hon-ored to have Grand Master Joe sing at the opening session of Grand Chapter. I also served on the Board of the Masonic Eastern Star Home for Children with both Tom Hauder and then Joe McBride. It was an honor to represent Nebraska OES by serving on the Board as Worthy Grand Matron.

On Wednesday evening of Grand Chapter, everyone was entertained by the children from the Masonic-Eastern Star Home for Children. Their fan-tastic rendition of American Baseball songs was outstand-ing. Again, note the enthusi-asm. Don’t we wish that we could bottle up this enthusiasm and take it to our Lodge and Chapter meetings! Again on Wednesday evening at Grand Chapter we were pleased to initiate five members from our Youth Groups – one from Rain-bow, three from Job’s Daugh-ters and one DeMolay. There were to have been nine origi-nally but due to finals, District Track meets and a work sched-ule, things just didn’t work out. There are four chapters that will be able to initiate these young members into our Order. Please join with me in welcoming our newest members.

Thursday was a special day as we honored our members of 50 years or more. What a joy to greet each of them and get a special hug. When you add the total number of years of devo-tion to our Order, the numbers are OUTSTANDING!

Thursday evening, May 15, 2014 was the Installation of the 2014-2015 Grand Chapter Of-ficers as they began their “Mu-sic of the Stars” Grand Chapter year. I know that they will enjoy every minute of their travels as those of the 2013-14 Year. Con-gratulations!

Fraternally and Star Love,

Bethel 5 held their election of officers at our April 26th meet-ing. Congratulations to the new line officers for the next term:

Honored Queen – Belle Senior Princess – Grace Junior Princess – Ashley Guide – Brittany Marshal – Chelsea

After the meeting, put our best foot forward to see the crazy socks we wore for the day.

Then we enjoyed a Fast Food lunch event. Clues were given and the girls had to guess where we were going. Our main course was at McDonalds. Fries or onion rings were at Runza. Our favorite drink was from Burger King and we ended with dessert at Zesto’s. What a fun event, and the day was beautiful.

Our highway clean – up for Sunday, April 27th was postponed due to the weather. We used the scheduled time to meet at the Ma-sonic Temple and practice for Grand competitions.

Our Associate Guardian and his family, attended the HIKE event at Mahoney State Park on Saturday, May 3rd. It was a beau-tiful day for the walk and presentation. It appeared that the tower was the favorite place to be.

Bro. Roger Stanley noticed that the American Flag flying over the 16th & L street Lodge building was looking rather tat-tered and worn and decided to take action. He has purchased and donated a new flag for the Lodge building.

We will be retiring the old flag and raising the new flag on Thursday, June 5 just before our business meeting at 6:45 pm. This ceremony will be open to anyone who wishes to attend.

COMING EVENTS

Our June business meeting will be held on Thursday, June 5 with a pot-luck dinner start-ing at 6:15, the flag retirement and new flag raising at 6:45, and Lodge opening at 7:00 pm.

We will be voting on two petitions and that will probably result in Degree work for the month of June.

The making of a Freemason consists of a continuing course of education, of training, and of char-acter forming. While it may be accepted that it is an innermost desire, followed by obligations that makes one a member of the Craft, yet in a truer form and better sense, a man is naver a Freemason until he truthfully and loyally lives up to his obligations. And he cannot do that until he understands them, and eventually knows their scope and real meaning.

Freemasonry can very well be divided into many phases. Its landmarks, its customs, its consitu-tion and its laws, just to mention a few, if studied and mastered, can provide a more interesting course for the Master Mason seeking Masonic knowledge. Its historical background can provide in interesting program of investigation to the Member attracted to a desire for research.

One peculiarity about Freemasonry is that it will stand investigation. The deeper the research, the more extensive the knowledge of its hidden art and mysteries, the more highly it is appreciated. A member of the Craft who merely takes his degrees in a listless, careless sort of manner, and then remains as just a spectator at Lodge meetings, may hold to the opinion that Freemasonry differs little from other societies. The the contrary, the Master Mason who delves deeply into Masonic literature takes a lively interest in every part of the Ritualistic and Lodge Work, and learns the origin, meaning and moral bearing of its symbols, cannot possibly fall into such an error. To him Freemasonry has a refining and elevating influence not to be found in the ordinary run of organizations.

The philosophies of Freemasonry, when discovered and then accepted and practiced, provide that simple but profound solution to the problems of human relationships. May it be accepted that Free-masonry is a way of living to the Master Mason who is interested enough to appraise and value the wealth that is his, and his alone, by virtue of his Masonic Membership.

The best informed Master Mason is the Master Mason who reads and studies. Consequently, if we want Freemasonry to be of practical usefulness and cultural attainment, we, as Freemasons, must not neglect our Masonic reading, our Masonic studying and our research for more Masonic Light.

During the Entered Apprentice lecture, the new Mason is introduced to the jewels of the Lodge when he is told there are six such jewels, three immovable and three movable. These “jewels” are not precious stones as one might imagine when first hearing the term jewels, but rather refer to their value to the operative builder in conducting his trade.

In the United States, the Immovable Jewels are the square, level, and plumb. They are deemed immovable because they belong to fixed positions in the lodge, the East, West, and South. The three principal officers of the lodge who sit in these positions wear replicas of these operative tools. The Master wears the square as a symbol of morality. The Senior War-den wears the level as a symbol of equality while the Junior Warden wears the plumb as an emblem of upright living.

One might ask why these emblems are considered immovable when in fact the officers who wear these jewels move about the lodge room and do not remain stationary. Perhaps they are considered immovable in that they are assigned to a specific officer of the lodge and, in that sense, they are permanently assigned to the East, West, and South.

The square, level, and plumb are indeed important and valuable tools for the builder for without them, he cannot carry out his trade. For the Freemason, these tools become symbols related to building our moral selves. This point is brought home in the Fellowcraft degree where the plumb, square and level are introduced as the working tools for the degree.

A plumb is a string or cord with a free-swinging mass attached to the end that when held will come to rest perpendicular to the horizontal due the gravitational forces. This allows the builder to ensure he has erected a beam in the proper manner, that is, perpendicular to the surface. As such, the plumb is a symbol of right, uprightness, and proper social and mor-al behavior. It is unlikely that a wall can stand for long if it is not erected properly or is not straight. It is also unlikely that a Mason who does not lead an upright life can be of value to his fellow man or to our fraternity. The plumb stands for righteousness before God and man and becomes a standard by which we can test our morality.

A square is an instrument having two arms with straight edges meeting in a right angle. As a symbol the square represents morality and virtue. The concepts of morality and virtue should guide all our actions before God and with our fellow man. We must look into our hearts and ensure our dealings with others are conducted in a virtuous and moral manner. When we “act upon the square” we are telling the truth and dealing honestly with the other person. Morality is very difficult to define yet we should be able to recognize morality, or the lack thereof, based upon the standards of God. Each man must look deep within himself to set those standards and principles by which he lives.

The level is used to prove horizontals in operative masonry. In speculative Masonry the level is a symbol of equality indicating that all men have the same duties to God and the same responsibilities and rights before his fellow man. Equality does not mean that all men are equal in skills or abilities but rather that all men should be treated with respect, dignity, and understanding. We are all individuals, yet we should be a universal brotherhood before God where men can achieve mutual respect and understanding regardless of their differences.

The Entered Apprentice lecture tells us that the square teaches morality, the level equal-ity, and the plumb rectitude of conduct. Symbolically, as Freemasons, we are building a spir-itual building that requires hard work and effort throughout our lifetimes. We must build a level foundation based upon an understanding of the equality of man before God. Upon this foundation we build our moral standards that guide our dealings with our fellow man while always striving to walk uprightly before God.

Perhaps the monitorial explanation for the working tools of a Fellowcraft Mason is a fit-ting way to close this discussion.

“The Plumb is an instrument made use of by operative Masons to raise perpendiculars, the Square to square their work, and the Level to lay horizontals; but we, as Free and Accept-ed Masons, are taught to make use of them for more noble and glorious purposes; the Plumb admonishes us to walk uprightly in our several stations before God and man, squaring our actions by the Square of Virtue, and remembering that we are traveling upon the Level of Time, to “that undiscovered country, from whose bourne* no traveler returns.”

* Bourne = boundary or destination.
