One habit that I have been hearing a lot about lately is the habit of going to church that is, being in worship on a regular basis. It turns out that some have gotten out of the habit. Several have said, “I don’t know why, but I have gotten out of the habit of going to church.” Church attendance is a healthy habit. One of our young adults, a man not quite 21, just told me the other day, “I feel great when I come to church. It gives me a warm, tingly feeling deep inside!” One of our older adults commented to me recently: “If I miss church on Sunday, it just feels like the week doesn’t go right.” If you have fallen out of the habit of going to church, I personally want to invite you back ! We don’t say it enough: “We miss you!” And more importantly, God misses you; God longs to meet you in corporate worship! He wants you to make meeting Him in worship a regular part of your life. Regular church attendance has many benefits; here are a quick few: 1. Going to church provides us with a great foundation for living life. 2. Going to church provides us with spiritual strength. 3. Going to church provides us with a number of caring friends. 4. Going to church provides us with opportunities to serve God by serving others. 5. Going to church helps us to grow closer to God. Give Me Something to Eat 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’ 37 “Then the righteous will answer him, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry and feed you, or thirsty and give you something to drink? 38 When did we see you a stranger and invite you in, or needing clothes and clothe you? 39 When did we see you sick or in prison and go to visit you?’ 40 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.’

-Matthew 25:35-43

God has been working in the community around Locust Avenue in Clarksburg. UM Temple recently started handing bags of soup, crackers, and

applesauce to the children of our community every Friday. The very first week we handed out 35 bags, and it has continued to grow each week. Last week we went out

into our community and handed out 84 bags to the children. Praise God!

This has been a good ministry for two good reasons. First, we get the opportunity to give someone a meal that they might not have. Second, it gets the people in our church out to meet the community. This has been such a blessing because we are making a difference in the lives of the people around us. We have seen some of the children come to Sunday School and Church. They are so appreciative and thankful.

I have seen a transformation in the past month and a half in our church and our community, and it’s God at work. The church is reaching out and being the hands and feet of Christ and what a difference it has made. Plant a seed of hope somewhere today! As Matthew West says in his newest song-DO SOMETHING!

God’s Big Back Yard Children’s Worship – ages 4-12 – Sundays – 10:00am

God’s Big Back Yard is a place where children learn to worship God in their own way – on their own level. They learn about Loving God, Loving Others, and Serving the World.

Children begin worship with about 15 minutes of playtime – getting all their energy out.

Children write their prayers on the prayer board each week during play time. We pray for each other, for family members, for pets, for things we have heard about in our community and our world. When playtime is over, we gather for singing with Ms. Susan, taking a mission offering, practicing our monthly memory verse, and prayer – led by one of the children. They are anxious to pray aloud.

Children are then divided into two age groups for the bible story and discussion time.

Minutes-Duff Street United Methodist Church Council Meeting – May 12, 2014

Present: Pastor Brian, Pastor Dustin, Pastor Marybeth, Bob Hemingway, Carolyn Green, Tyler Spear,

Ireta Kirby, Jim Eakle, Don Phillips, Bob Fowler, Don and Patty Davis, Roberta Kennedy, Doris

McIntyre, Susan Seders, Tom Plemons

A guest Bonnie Starkey, with the WV Annual Conference Lead Team, spoke and interviewed our Council

on the many things we do as a U M Church.

Bob Hemingway led devotions, “Expect The Unexpected”.

Bob Fowler – Finance Secretary distributed the April Cash Journal (we have already paid more on

utilities this year than all of last year). Everything is paid – up to date.

Carolyn Green – Food Pantry, the City had the Postal Service food drive on Saturday, our Food pantry

received 45 boxes of food. She passed out a Recommendation from Staff Parish Committee. We will

seek applications for a Church Secretary. Also a sample ad for the position, and Job Description. Don

Phillips made the motion to change the Bereavement Policy to read three days. Passed.

Doris McIntyre – UMW, the Mother’s Day Banquet was held on Friday, everything was very nice, food

was delicious, all proceeds going to “Relay for Life”. The UMW will have a Coffee/Tea for all women

on Sunday morning May 18. On Sunday, June 8 we will have a Salad Luncheon with all proceeds going

to help send kids to summer camps.

Marybeth Chien – Associate Pastor – after trying to have a meeting to set up Vacation Bible School and

only Marybeth, Larry Smith and Carolyn came it was decided to have a two day VBS, it will be July 11

and 12. We will be taking the children to the Library and to the movies this summer. We are having

major issues with Nursery-care. We had a room full of children and only 1 paid person. We now have l

leader and 1 assistant. A discussion was held on getting someone else to help in the Nursery. Carolyn is

going to make an application and Pastor Brian will pass them out after church. This Sunday, May 18 is

our Community Meal. We have money set aside but no leadership. Doris will ask Friends of God Circle

if they can do it this time. Bob Hemingway has volunteered to head it up every other month. Carolyn

will help.

Don Phillips – Trustees, We have been offered first refusal on the property by the parking lot. The

Council wants the Trustees to get an appraisal of the property. The Trustees and the inmates from

Prunytown, moved the shrubs from around the Multi-Ministries Building to the open lot. They also

cleaned and waxed the floors in the Sanctuary, with the help of Mary Adkins and others. The Trustees

will power wash the building and look into painting the Side-wall.

Tom Plemons – Hospitality, everything is going fine.

Pastor Dustin – Had a letter from Amy Shanholtzer, about a Camp – radical discipleship (to get a deeper

Relationship with Christ) Possibility of getting Mikki McMichael to go. The church will pay half of the

cost. Jim Eakle’s suggested Dustin speak to the congregation, then we take an offering. Every Friday

evening the Temple gives out bags of soup, crackers and applesauce to the children and youth. The first

week they gave out 30 bags, now they give out 60. Kids are starting to come to church.

Pastor Brian – we sent a delegation from Duff Street to the UM Temple to see about going to the Temple

for the 11:00 o’clock Traditional service. It was a very positive meeting. We now have a Building

Relay for Life News

The Relay for Life Team has been quite successful this year due to the kindness and support given to us by the members of Duff St. UM Church and surrounding areas. So far this year we have raised $7485. And still have 3 months to go until the final count in August. Our team is made up of some fantastic people who truly believe in what we are doing (and we have a lot of fun, too). Personally I am so blessed and proud to be part of this group. Our big celebration is coming up soon. It will be held at Bridgeport High School on the night of June 6. Starting time is around 5:00 and the survivor’s walk is usually around 6:00. Our team will have lots going on in our booth – baked goods, balloons, craft items for sale, tacos in a bag (if you don’t know what this is, come and find out), and lots more. We will be giving away a WVU basket and a Beach bag – both are filled with many items. See one of our members to find out how you can win. PLEASE COME OUT ON JUNE 6 AND SUPPORT YOUR RELAY FOR LIFE TEAM. THANK YOU SO MUCH!!!

If you are a woman…

Who finds meaning in her church and is drawn to its fellowship,

Whose life is packed full of activities and obligations,

Who struggles with loneliness or a sense of failure,

Who juggles jobs and family, and tries to be faithful to both,

Who seems overburdened with the traditional woman’s role of care giver,

Who feels she has gifts which are wasted or underdeveloped,

Who wants to be accepted for who she is,

Who needs a supportive community to affirm her own sense of purpose and

commitment to God…
