PRESIDENT’S REPORT
My report this time has to focus on the U3A 2014 Qld. State conference of which we were the hosts. As your President, you made me so proud - U3A Redlands District was an inspiring influence as delegates gathered in the Redlands from all over Queensland and interstate and we crammed as much as we possibly could into three absolutely wonderful days. The weather was kind to us and I’m sure our visitors saw the Cleveland region at its very best on Monday – a Life in Australia talk by Brad Monk, Whittaker McNaught Group, on the aged care changes this year and then a scenic tour of some historical sites around Cleveland. Thank you to Aveo Cleveland Gardens Retirement Village for allowing us to have lunch there before moving on to Ormiston House and a guided tour followed by their renowned high tea. That evening Noci Italian Restaurant on the harbour was very busy as some of us gathered for an informal evening of pizza and a glass of wine. Tuesday morning dawned and it was the official opening of the Conference by our Patron, Mayor Karen Williams. Our theme of “Our Beginnings – Our Vision” was carried through 2 days of enlightening and often humorous talks on life back in the 1980’s through to the current day. We talked about U3A foundations and what sort of future we are looking for as U3A sets objectives for the next 10 years. Those of you who attended, I know there would have been several special “light bulb” moments for you and I thank you very much for the warm welcome you gave our visitors and the way you mingled with them, enjoying their company and they yours. It was truly a REDLANDS RENDEZVOUS from which we can learn and savour our own memories. I hope there will be photos on our website gallery quite soon including some from our Conference Candlelight Dinner at the Courthouse Restaurant. Remember you can download the ones you would like to keep. None of this would have been possible without the huge support we received from our sponsors – Thank you to the Redland City Council, Griffith University, Renaissance Retirement Village and Uplift Tours & Travel and the many local businesses who gave us donations and in kind support. Also, a big thank you to the U3A Redlands Management Committee and Conference sub-committee - Doreen Hill for preparing the Event Programme, Jean Howell for preparing the Dinner Menu card, Freda Charles for organising the refreshments, Iris Murray for organising the pre-conference tour, Laraine Gonchee for handling the administration, Denise Kolcze for being our Conference M.C. and all our members, far too many to name, who helped in so many different ways. Finally a special thank you to Margaret Ward and our U3A Choir who sang so wonderfully on the second day. It was inspirational.

GRUBS (Greater Redlands Ukulele Band) There has been a changing of the guards at GRUBS. After a number of years, Jan Buchanan and Lenore Flanagan have stepped aside as tutors (they are still here - just taking it a little easier). With over 50 regular members a larger venue was also required, so we moved to the main Uniting Church Hall in Passage St, Cleveland, for our regular Tuesday sessions. Recently, by popular demand, a decision was made to run our regular sessions through the school breaks (except Christmas). Another new move was to establish a Facebook page (GRUB'S Greater Redlands Ukulele Band). This was created, and is maintained by Laurie Dyer (one of the tutors). On the performance front the group has been active with shows for Legacy Week, a cruise themed show for the Uniting Church and a number of shows at local retirement villages in the area. As this article goes to print we are looking forward to the 'Redlands Ukulele Festival’, at which we will be performing with a number of other bands. If you are interested in playing ukulele, please feel free to drop in at any of our regular sessions and check us out. We are an intermediate group but beginners are always welcome. (Bob Foster) A BEGINNERS UKULELE GROUP will start on Thursday for term 3rd. (Jan Buchanan) BEGINNERS LAWN BOWLS - Kenneth Carroll is starting this class on Tuesdays.

The English Plural !
We'll begin with a box, and the plural is boxes,
But the plural of ox becomes oxen, not oxes. One fowl is a goose, but two are called geese,
Yet the plural of moose should never be meese. You may find a lone mouse or a nest full of mice,
Yet the plural of house is houses, not hice.
