EAST BAY CHAPTER
EAST BAY BANTER
BY: Ken Rogers
Hi from East Bay,
May was a busy month for our chapter. On May 3rd
we
met at the Hilton Hotel in Fremont to cruise to San Jose
for the Silicon Valley Cruise. We met up with everyone at
Pep Boys parking lot, on Stevens Creek Blvd. There was a
good turnout of F-100’s and vintage vehicles. A number of
stops were planned and participants would draw a card at
each one to go towards making up a poker hand. The
final stop was Saratoga Springs for the BBQ, awards and
raffles. Good run Silicon Valley. We really enjoyed this
day.
On May 10th we had a good show of F-100’s at the Old
Town Niles Show. Livermore Chapter members, Nancy,
and Jose joined East Bay for a good show. We had great
weather, and a fun day. Robert and Ruth Martinez
received an award for best truck.
On May 17th some of our members attended the Classic
Cruisers U.S.A. Show in Newark. There were a lot of great
cars that were there. A free breakfast was served at Dino’s
Diner, and was enjoyed by all.
Chuck Arroyo, a long time member of Shades Of The
Past car club in the East Bay area, recently passed away.
Chuck always had something funny to say, and kept
people laughing. For many years, his club put on the
Martins Beach Run, which was enjoyed by many folks. We
will miss Chuck at the car shows. R.I.P. Chuck, and keep
them laughing.
Are you planning to attend the North-South Run this
year? We sure hope so. This well planned event is one
you won’t want to miss, and will not forget. Check it out.
August 15 thru 17.
See you at Port City’s run, Cruisin’ The Grove, on June
1st.

ANNUAL SILICON VALLEY CRUISE
By: Jim Dillinger
Once again the Silicon Valley Chapter has hosted one of the South Bay’s premier events for special interest vehicles. On
Saturday, May 3rd
, they held the annual Silicon Valley Cruise, a driving event that combines cruising the Silicon Valley with a
whole bunch of other hot rods, customs, and restored vehicles, stops along the way that are of interest to the participants, a
chance to win a large selection of great prizes, mingle with good friends (old and new), and have a sumptuous meal.
The day started at the Pep Boys Auto Parts store on Stevens Creek Blvd. in the Santa Clara/San Jose area. All of the Bay
Area Pep Boys Stores have very
recently added a “Speed Shop” area to
their stores, and this store wanted to
have the cruise started there to help
spread the word about this new
addition. They also donated a bunch of
raffle prizes and goody-bag stuffers.
The morning of the cruise, Pep Boys
also provided an E-Z Up for the
registration area, and supplied donuts
and coffee for all the participants. The “speed shop” manager, Jason Anderson, selected Mike Guerreiro’s 56 Ford pickup as
his favorite vehicle, and presented Mike the trophy commemorating that choice.
At about 9:00 AM, everyone hopped in their hot rods and caravanned over to Campbell Auto Restoration & High
Performance Center, better known as CAR. There, owner Tom Dillard gave everyone a tour of the facility and spent some
time explaining everything about their operation.
Presenting the detail to which they go to build or
refurbish the cars they get in there was an eye-opener
for a number of people. It helps us understand why it’s
so expensive to build (and own) a “show quality car”. At
the conclusion of the shop tour, Tom selected Gary
4
Bohn’s 56 Big Window as his favorite vehicle. Gary is also the person who stepped up to sponsor this year’s run by donating
the funds to provide run t-shirts for all the entries and sponsors.
Leaving CAR, the group moved on to a parking lot at West Valley College in
Saratoga. This stop provided an opportunity for everyone to stretch their legs,
check out all the cool vehicles they had joined up with for this cruise, and give
Gary Bohn, as the run sponsor, time to choose his favorite entry. His choice was
a very sharp 32 Ford 3 window coupe hi-boy (sorry, I didn’t get the owner’s
name).
From West Valley College, it was off to Savannah-Channelle Winery in the Santa Cruz Mountains. There, everyone was
directed to park up on a bluff overlooking the winery, where they would also have a great view of the surrounding hills and
valleys. There was an older estate style home on the bluff that had its bottom floor converted to a tasting room area,
complete with a patio overlooking the beautiful scenery. Everyone took the opportunity to kick back, sample some of the
wines, and continue to get to know some of their fellow cruise members. It also gave the winery’s owner, Mike, and the wine
maker, Mark, the chance to check out all the vehicles, and select their favorite to be presented the trophy sponsored by
Savannah-Channelle. Their selection was a fantastic 1926 Ford Model T 2 door sedan, owned by Don Yegge, that had a
number of subtle little touches that were really neat, and helped it to stand out in the crowd.
After spending some very enjoyable time at the winery, it was a short drive part way down the mountain
to Saratoga Springs, a picturesque area in the woods, with multiple picnic areas, a play area for the kids,
some RV camp sites, a creek meandering through it, and some very large BBQ pits, one of which supplied
a huge BBQ lunch for all the cruise participants. If anyone left the park hungry, it could only be from lack of
availing themselves of the great food that was served. There were even plates seen that probably needed
two people to carry them back to the tables.
After everyone had the chance to stuff themselves, it was time for the raffles to begin. As it’s been for the
last couple of years, there were fewer prizes, but of a much higher quality and value. One of the favorites
was the chance to win one of the bottles of wine sporting the Silicon Valley Cruise artwork on the label.
These have been a part of the prizes for the last four years, and there are a number of people who make a
point of trying to win one for their collection.
5
After all the raffle prizes were awarded it was time to see who would win the 50/50 raffle, as well as who would be the
lucky winners in the poker run. The 50/50 was won by a first-time participant with the Cruise (again, I missed his name). He
made a point of letting everyone know that this was his first event with hot rodders, he drives a 2014 Corvette, and that he’s
never had so much fun with cars. He promises he’ll be back for more next
year.
The best poker hand prize of $50 was won by ex-Silicon Valley Chapter
member Greg Leonard. Greg swears that everything was on the up-and-up,
but there were some who questioned how he could be a two time winner
(he won last
year’s poker
hand as well).
He promises that
if he wins again
next year he’ll
donate the
winnings to
charity (perhaps he’ll consider donating to my “truck fund”). We
didn’t get the name of the winner of the of the $25 “worst hand”
winner, but we’re sure they were happy.
Several more trophies for ‘Favorite Vehicles’ were awarded
while at Saratoga Springs as well. The Manager’s Favorite,
selected by their weekend manager, was given to Bill Burnett for
his awesome 31 Model ‘A’ coupe hi-boy. The big-block Chevy in this car sounds awfully impressive, through its open
headers, when it’s fired up.
California Drywall, a San Jose area contractor, was one of the contributing sponsors for this year’s cruise. One of their
executives, Brian Bowles, just happens to be the grandson-in-law of Silicon Valley Chapter members Gary & Kathy Bohn.
Since he was unable to attend the event, Kathy stood in for him and selected Ben Lopez’s 47 Ford four door sedan as
“Brian’s Choice”. Kathy said that the second she saw the car pull into the Pep Boys parking lot earlier in the morning, she fell
in love with it. Apparently it has something to do with some youthful memories it sparked for her.
6
Another event sponsor was Rudy’s Plaster Masters, a local stucco contractor. The owner, Tom Rudy, is an avid hot rodder
who comes from a family background of gear-heads, and he wasn’t able to make it to the cruise as the result of having to
deal with some medical issues, so “Tom’s Choice”, selected by this writer, was awarded to an immaculate 51 Chevy 2 door
sedan. Sometimes a car with relatively few modifications can be done so “just right” that you have to keep coming back for
another look. That’s what this car was to me. I simply couldn’t get enough of it, even though it’s still powered by an inline six,
and has no significant changes other than stance, paint, and wheels. The owner’s had to leave early, so the trophy was
accepted by their friend. (Here we go again…..more names I didn’t get!!)
The final contributing sponsor was the South Bay Piping Industry Union Local. Silicon Valley Chapter member, Paul Oller
is one of their members. He also does some teaching for them, so he ended up being the one who selected Vern Solberg’s
super nice 50 Ford F-1 as their “favorite vehicle” trophy.
This story would not be complete without recognizing the generous people and sponsors that make it possible to put this
event together without causing our chapter to go bankrupt; Gary Bohn, Rudy’s Plaster Masters, the South Bay Piping
Industry Union Local, California Drywall, and Pep Boys Auto Parts (San Jose store) all deserve a huge “THANK YOU”. We
would also like to thank Kevin Villa and his friend for diligently ensuring that we had a picture of every vehicle entered.
Michelle Guerreiro spent the entire day circulating through each of cruise stops to photograph the people, the stops, and the
activities. Most of the pictures used for this article were taken by her. Michelle Leonard, and her friend John, worked tirelessly
throughout the day to ensure all the participants got to draw a card for their chance to fill in a winning poker hand. We would
like to acknowledge the help and support of all the Silicon Valley Chapter members and their wives for all their hard work as
well. Last, but not least, thank you to East Bay Chapter and Modesto Chapter for their generous donations. If anyone was
missed here, blame it on my “oldtimer’s disease”, not on any lack of appreciation. An event like this requires many people,
doing many things, and we need and appreciate you all.
We hope you’ll enjoy a few more pictures from the cruise, and don’t forget to mark your calendars for May 2, 2015, for the
8th Annual Silicon Valley Cruise. The chapter has already started working on putting that together, and you won’t want to
miss it.

Researchers for the Massachusetts Turnpike Authority found over 200 dead crows near greater Boston recently and there
was concern that they may have died from Avian Flu. A bird pathologist examined the remains of all the crows, and, to
everyone’s relief, confirmed the problem was definitely NOT Avian Flu.
However, during the detailed analysis, it was noted that varying colors of paint appeared on the bird’s beaks and claws. By
analyzing these paint residues it was determined that 98% of the crows had been killed by impact with trucks, while only 2%
were killed by impact with a car.
MTA then hired an Ornithological Behaviorist to determine if there was a cause for the disproportionate percentage of
truck kills versus car kills.
He very quickly concluded the cause: When crows eat road kill, they always have a lookout crow in a nearby tree to warn
of impending danger. They discovered that while all the lookout crows could shout “Cah”, not a single one could shout
“truck”.

Modesto Happenings
By:Bob Hansen
We were invited by Jennifer Mullen from Modesto Convention and Visitors Bureau to attend a small car show and
festivities commemorating the 100th anniversary of the UC Ag Extension. Jennifer often mans a booth at our shows to
promote Graffiti activities in the area. She has been a good source of publicity for our shows over the years. Attending were
John Walsh with his ’56 Ford truck, Bob Hansen with his ’67 Mustang, Carl Piercefield with his ’62 Ranchero, Wayne King
with his ’56 Vicky, and Russell and Eunice Holland with their ’38 Ford truck. It was held at the County Ag Center in Modesto
and drew a nice crowd and interesting mix of booths and attendees, ranging from 4-H to most of the Velvet Creamery Misfit
Car Club.
Our 21st Annual Back to Graffiti show is coming up soon – June 13 and 14 at the Fruit Yard. Members of our chapter have
been scrambling to get the flyers out. Tom Tomberlin and John Walsh have covered a lot of local area shows, and everyone
has pitched in to get the word out. From the looks of our pre-registers, we are going to have a great turn out – up 33% over
this time last year! Extended forecast is for mid-80’s – perfect car show weather. Would like to see all of you in our sister
chapters at the show. Should be a nice day for an outing. Goodie bags are looking great again this year and trophy donations
have far exceeded our expectations.
We are also gearing up for Summer Bash in July. Our mega-raffle is going to be spectacular!
Several from our Chapter are looking forward to attending Port City’s Cruisin’ the Grove in June at Oak Grove Regional
Park in Stockton. Look forward to seeing friends and enjoying the sun and festivities. Hope to see you there!
Who’s Working on What Tom Day reports his ’29 truck is painted. It’s a beautiful 2-tone copper and will be out for show later this summer. He was at
9
the tire store this week picking up some 10 inch slicks mounted on traditional American mags. He is still waiting for special
order Cokers in traditional white wall for the front.

A wife asks her husband, a software engineer, "Could you please go shopping for me and buy one carton of milk, and if they have eggs, get six." A short time later, the husband comes back with six cartons of milk. The wife asks him, "Why did you buy six cartons of milk?" He replied, "They had eggs."

Nothing this month from Port City Chapter, but then they’re a very small chapter and they’ve been super, super busy putting
the finishing touches on the “Cruisn’ The Grove Run”, held on June 1st. If you possibly can, be sure to take it in.

FOR SALE: 1956 Ford vintage and classic F-250 4 speed with what appears to be OVERDRIVE. I acquired this truck with
the intention to fix it up but that didn't work out. I don't have a garage or adequate place to work on it. So here's your chance
to pick up a very solid truck for restoration or customizing.
Has California title registered through Jan 2015. Includes a new factory repair manual and truck cover.
The body is virtually rust free (some surface rust) with some bondo. VERY solid cab, doors, fenders, hood, frame. Looks like
the cab floor might have been replaced or sandblasted. It has the original seat and gas tank which are not pictured here.
Front bumper is missing, though readily available, and the rear bumper was customized. The bed has been lined with
aluminum panels.
It doesn't run and has a Lincoln engine which appears to be an optional engine of that era. Some heavy duty trucks have a
13
Y-Block which where for both Ford, Mercury and Lincoln. From what I understand these were hot rod motors of their time.
The casting number on the intake manifold shows it is a ECU series.
The transmission is a full synchro 4 speed with letters OD in the middle of the shifter knob which should mean it has
overdrive. The brakes feel like they still work. Lots of original parts still on the truck.
It has an 8 lug rear end installed which probably wasn't stock, since I'm guessing it is a 1 ton rear end and this is a 3/4 ton. I
do know where I can pick up a rear end out of a 1957 1/2 ton if need be. Also installed is an auxiliary gas tank underneath
the rear of the bed. It is a very sanitary installation.
Has most of the original dash parts and the cab is in good condition. The hood has been modified which for an original
restoration would need to be changed back but for a rodder would be perfect in that it slides and tilts forward - no head
banging. Information: Bill Manning @ [email protected] or www.myhistorydvd.com or 619.980.0769
