Potentate’s MessageDear Brother Nobles,

Well, it is hard to believe that the year is almost half over. Man, does the time fly by when you are having fun!! We have been having fun this year and I hope you are taking part in it.

All the functions we have had this year have just been spectacular. Each one of our major functions is the responsibility of one of the Divan members and each one of them has planned and executed a major event this year. Each of them has just been over the top good. Each of our Divan members is due a tip of the Fez for a job well done—so far.

Each of them still has at least one major event this year for which he is responsible. These include, but are not limited to, the June Ceremonial, Noble’s Birthday Party, Hospital Benefit Days (formerly known as paper sell), Coronation Ball, Chili Cook-off, and Children’s Christmas Parties. The Divan invites you to attend these and other functions to see how we are doing.

I also want to express my heartfelt thanks to all the Nobles of Egypt Temple for your support of the East/West Shrine football game, our Super Bowl Party in the Oasis, our Memorial Service, the Potentate’s Ball, our Parades, and most especially for your support in making this a banner year for our Shrine Circus.

Now I am asking for your help with membership. We are off to a pretty decent start but need lots more petitions to have a really successful membership year. Egypt always rises to the occasion and I know we can do it with membership.

One Heartbeat Nobles,

Joe Joseph T. Osborne Potentate

Chaplain’s CornerWe all enjoy meeting with our friends and catching up

during our meetings and festivities. In fact one of the best parts of being a Shriner is having so many friends!

We all need to be particularly intentional about intro-ducing ourselves and including new men in our con-versations especially during our two Ceremonial Week-ends.

It was just three short years ago that I was fortunate enough to have two men who introduced themselves and took me under their wings and escorted me to their club meeting rooms and showed me around. I don’t remember all the people I met but I do remember the feeling of being included which as the commercial says was “priceless”. I felt included, important and valuable! I wanted to come back. I wanted to get more involved with this great bunch of guys who were interested in ME!

Let’s all make an extra effort to walk up to a new face and say “Hi”. Sometimes I embarrass myself and find out the man has been a Shriner for years—but that’s OK. Other times I make a new friend—someone whom I can look for and more importantly will look for me when he comes back.

Involvement and commitment to our Temple begins with you and me—it begins with a smile and a firm handshake and the warm welcoming words of “Hello, I’m glad you’re here my name is.......

We Need Your Help…When you are ill or facing hospitalization, we want

to know. If one of your fellow Nobles dies, we need to know. Call the Shrine office 813-884-8381 (Hillsbor-ough) or 727-443-7597 (Pinellas) and talk to Reggie at ext. 300 or Rosa at ext. 305. They will make sure that the Chaplain is notified of the situation.

Cover Story:EGYPT SHRINE CIRCUS!

What a fabulous 2011 Circus! The 46th Annual Egypt Shrine Circus came to town on April 14-17 and what a great event it was. Thank you to all the Nobles and Ladies who made this event so special for over 4,000 children who would never have been able to attend a Circus if it wasn’t for you - Shriners.

The shows were thrilling with the stilt dancers, Coco the clown, high diving daredevils, globe riders, the el-ephants and especially the Shrine Clowns. The weather was beautiful, and our concessions and the Carnival made this year’s Circus truly spectacular. Thank you to all the Clubs and Units for making the Circus fun and memorable for so many people.

As the 2011 Circus is now in the history books. We are happy to report that this years’ Circus exceeded everyone’s expectations. Ad Sales and Circus Daddy donations were over the top, with a new midway and entrance Unit Concessions were very profitable, Sales of the Circus Books were great, and the Bike donations were a big hit with the children. Thank you for a very successful Circus.

Success just does not happen, people make it happen and our Nobility once again stepped up in making this event a success. As we wind down the Circus office for 2011 and finish the renovations and new upgrades we would like to say a big “Tip of the Fez” to all who helped

and supported the Circus. Remember, Clubs and Units Commission Deadline

Shrine Club NewsHERNANDO COUNT Y SHRINE CLUB

By Noble Ray C. Stoner

The Easter social was well attended, even though some of the snowbirds have returned north. We’ll miss them and look forward to their return in the fall. Sally and Roy were the entertainment and as usual we enjoyed dancing and line dancing. The entertainment for May will be Short Notice during the social on May 17th.

It is with sadden hearts that Hernando County Shrine Club mourns the passing of one of their most active members, Jack Marine who passed away on Monday, April 18. He will be missed.

Thanks goes out to all the cards, prayers, phone calls and visits during the recovery from quad bypass surgery by the president, George Knauer along with well wishes to 2nd VP Larry Hawley for a speedy recovery from double by-pass surgery.

HIGHLANDS COUNTY SHRINE CLUBBy Noble Jerry Higginbotham

Greetings from the Ridge: Highlands Shrine Club recently hosted our first annual golf tournament which was very successful. There were 14 foursomes and it appears to have made approximately a

$1,000 which we are told is very good for the first time. Ill. Sir Past Potentate Chuck Oakes spoke dur-ing the dinner hour and explained what the Shrine and Shrine Hospitals are all about. It was a great day and we plan to make the golf tournament an annual event. A special thanks to Noble Sam Wilkin and his committee for a great job and all of their hard work. .

The club has also established 4 locations on our grounds for motor home and RV parking with 50 and

30 amp 110 volt electrical hook ups for visiting Ma-sons and Nobles who are passing through or visiting.

The parking and service will provide accommodations for our brothers at a reasonable cost on a donation basis. With the departure of our northern Nobles and vaca-tioning Nobles, plans are underway for the months of June, July and August to combine our Board Meetings and business meetings together on the 4th Wednesday of the month. Rather than serving dinner during these month’s it will be a drink and desert night. Then back to the regular schedule in September. Also, during these three months, the socials will be changed to casual fun nights, on the 2nd Saturdays of these months.

There will dinner, fun games, cards, darts, etc. so it

should be a great evening for the nobles and ladies who are remaining at home during these summer months.

Plans are also underway for special festivities on Me-morial Day, July 4th and Labor Day. The Club will pro-vide hotdogs and hamburgers and the Nobles and ladies will be asked to bring their favorite dishes and desserts to share. These special holidays will be fun times to cel-ebrate with our fellow Nobles and Ladies. Our regular activities will continue with coffee & donuts Wednes-day mornings,

Friday darts, Saturday morning $4.00 breakfast and flea market, etc. Nobles and ladies, if you are in our area during any of these activities, you are welcome and invited to come and participate.

In closing, isn’t it great to be a Shriner!!

HUMIDOR CLUBBy Larry Wright

The Havana cigar factory today is much as it was when the art of cigar making was standardized in the mid-19th century and the production of cigars became industrialized. There are only eight factories making handmade cigars in Cuba today (compared with 120 at the beginning of the century). The names of the facto-ries were all officially changed after the revolution to what were considered more ideologically sound titles, but most of them are still commonly referred to by their pre-Revolutionary names, and still display their old signs outside. The best known are H. Upmann (now called Jose Marti), Partagas (Francisco Perez German), Romeo Y Julieta (Briones Montoto), La Corona (Fer-nando Roig), and the elite El Laguito, which originally opened in the mid-1960s as a training school. Each fac-tory specializes in a number of brands of a particular flavor. The Partagas factory, for instance, specializes in full-bodied cigars, producing six brands including Bolivar, Ramon Allones, Gloria Cubana and, of course, Partagas. Factories also often specialize in making a particular range of sizes.

The procedures in the various factories are essentially the same, though the size and atmosphere of each fac-tory differs. The grand El Laguito, for instance, is an Italianate mansion (built in 1910) and former home

120 medium-sized cigars (though exceptionally skilled rollers can make as many as 150) a day, an average of four to five minutes for a cigar. But the average for the Montecristo A size is only 56 cigars a day. Some star rollers, such as Jesus Ortiz at the H. Upmann factory, can do much better: he can produce a staggering 200 Montecristo As a day.

The torcedores work an eight-hour day, usually six days a week, for around 350-400 pesos ($350-400 at the official exchange rate) a month. They are allowed to take home five cigars a day and can smoke as many as they wish while they work.

There are seven grades of worker in the Havana fac-tory, the least experienced rollers (in grade 4) making only cigars up to and including the petit corona size; those in grade 5 making corona size and above, and those in grades 6 and 7 (the latter consists of a handful of star rollers) making the difficult specialist sizes such as pyramides. The skill of the roller is reflected in the eventual cost per inch of the cigar. The smaller sizes are, in other words, cheaper than the larger ones.

Using colored ribbon, each roller ties his or her cigars into bundles (all of the same size and brand) of 50. Most of these bundles (media ruedas, or “half wheels”) go into a vacuum fumigation chamber, where the cigars are treated against potential pests. A proportion of each roller’s output is also taken to be checked for quality.

The man in charge of quality control at El Laguito, Fernando Valdez, tests a fifth of each roller’s daily output (though only 10 percent of cigars are checked at the Partagas factory) according to no fewer than eight different criteria such as length, weight, firmness, smoothness of the wrappers, and whether or not the ends are well cut. Later, cigars from different batches are actually blind tasted by a team of six catadores, or professional smokers, themselves rigorously examined every six months, who must assess qualities such as a cigar’s aroma, how well it burns, and how easily it draws. The importance of each category varies accord-ing to the type of cigar. When testing a fat robusto, for instance, the flavor is paramount, but in the slim pana-tela size, draw is more important. There is a standard for each type of cigar. The catadores do their tasting in the morning only, smoking about an inch of each cigar, and refreshing their palates with sugarless tea. By the end of any given week, every roller’s work will have been tasted.

After being removed from the vacuum chamber, cigars are held in special cool cabinets (escaparates) for three weeks, in order to shed any excess moisture acquired in the factory and settle down any fermentation that is

of the Marquez de Pinar del Rio. It is located in three buildings in a swanky residential suburb. The rather gloomy three-story Partagas factory, on the other hand, which was built in downtown Havana in 1845, is rather more down to earth. Laguito was the first factory to use female rollers, and even today the majority of the 94 rollers there are women. The 200 rollers at the Parta-gas factory, the biggest for export production, turn out 5 million cigars a year. No matter which factory you go to, the walls of all of them display revolutionary slogans and portraits of Castro, Che Guevara, and others. Other slogans announced “La calidades el respeto al pueblo” (Quality is respect for people) or “Tu tambien haces calidad” (You have to care about quality).

It has been estimated that a handmade Havana cigar goes through no fewer than 222 different stages from seedling to the finished product, before being ready for distribution. And the care and expertise shown at the factory is not only crucial to the final appearance of the cigar, but also affects how well it burns and what it ac-tually tastes like. Not surprisingly, apprenticeship for the task of roller is a lengthy and competitive process, taking nine months. Even then, many fail, and those who succeed are confined to making small-sized cigars before being allowed to graduate to the larger, generally fuller-flavored, sizes.

The cigar rollers, or torcedores, work in large rooms where the old custom, dating from 1864, of reading aloud from books and newspapers continues to this day. The radio is also switched on, from time to time, to bring the news and important announcements. The worker who acts as reader (lector), selected by his peers for his expressive voice and literacy, is compensated by a small payment from each of the rollers, all of whom are paid piece work, according to the number of cigars they produce. Each roller is responsible for seeing a ci-gar through from the bunching stage until it is finally trimmed to size. The ready-blended combination of filler leaves and binder are prepared in advance by each roller and pressed in wooden molds of the appropriate size. The use of molds started in around 1958, before the Cuban revolution. As a result, the cigar rollers, sit-ting at benches rather like old-fashioned school desks, each start with a quota of filler appropriate to the size and brand of cigar being made that day. Everything is concentration: errors are costly. But the atmosphere is cheerful, the torcedores taking great pride in their work. If a visitor enters the room, the rollers greet him by tap-ping their chavetas in unison on their tables.

There are as many as 42 handmade cigar sizes made today, and a good cigar maker can usually roll around

14 • June 2011 • Sands

taking place. A cabinet might hold up to 18,000 cigars, all kept under careful supervision.

When they are ready, batches of 1,000 cigars from a particular brand and size are sent in wooden boxes to be graded according to appearance. The cigars are classi-fied into as many as 65 different shades, and each selec-tor must be familiar with all of them. First the selector takes into account the basic color of the cigar (hues giv-en names such as sangre de toro, encendido, colorado encendido, colorado, colorado pajizo, and clarisimo), and then the shade within that particular color category. The color grader then puts the cigars into transit boxes, making sure that all the cigars in a particular box are the same color. The darkest cigar is placed on the left of the box, and the cigars arranged according to nuances of shade so that the lightest is on the right.

Once the cigars are color-graded, they go to the pack-ing department, where bands are put on. The cigars are then put in the familiar cedar boxes in which they will be sold. The packers also watch out for cigars which have escaped the quality control department. Once the final box is filled, the cigars are checked again, and then a thin leaf of cedar wood is laid on top of them.

The box is then sealed with the essential label guaran-teeing that it is a genuine box of Havanas or Habanos. The word “Habanos” in red on a chevron has been added to boxes since 1994.

The practice of making handmade cigars is essentially the same wherever they’re made, but in the Dominican Republic, for instance, the arrangement between bunch-ers and rollers is sometimes different (the jobs usually being separated). The large, modern American-owned factories of the Dominican Republic have state-of-the-art quality-control methods, using machines (at the bunch stage, as well as later) to check suction, and thus how well a cigar will draw. Despite this, other manufac-turers still prefer to do everything by hand, particularly checking for gaps in the bunch, which will make a cigar overheat. In the Philippines, there is a method of rolling in which leaves are spiraled around two thin wooden sticks which are removed when the cigar is wrapped. On May the 25th Cesar Blanco of the Los Blanco Cigar Company will fully explain the entire growing process at our Humidor Club’s steak dinner being held at the Oasis Lounge.

NEW PORT RICHEY SHRINE CLUBBy Noble Edgar Kennedy

The rumor that the Keystone Kops were asked by Buckingham Palace to advise them on how to throw a really great party is only half true. It is up to you to figure out what half. Obviously the duke of somewhere was at the Prisoner’s Ball and reported back to White-hall. We did offer however to use the Paddy Wagon to take away the bride and groom from the Abbey just like we did for “DJ” and Bridget. Those royals really have no imagination.

We did however show up at the Easter Egg Hunt and gave rides to the only royals that count-our kids. This is always one of our favorite events that are looked forward to every year. The finely tuned Paddy Wagon will make it possible for us to show up for the Temple events.

The golf tournament has been scheduled for August 4th at MacDill AFB. There will be plenty of prizes and good cheer to go around. Full details will be available in the next issue of the Sands. Just talk to someone who played last year and we’re sure you pick up your bats and head to the first tee.

A police officer walked into an apartment where a woman was laying on the floor and a man with a 5 iron was standing over her. “Is this your wife” he asked. “Yes”. “Did you hit her with the golf club?” “Yes”. “How many times” asked the officer. “Five or six-no put me down for a five”!

“Keep your cool and don’t forget to feed the meter. Move along or I’ll have to give you a ticket!”

We realized a great income from ticket sales and donations, largely due to the efforts of Noble Dick Pierce, who brought in a record $855.00 all by himself, and this before the Brunch even started! If more Nobles could make an extra effort to sell extra tickets or procure donations, we could even exceed this income in the future. Then Noble George Banes and his kitchen help, which included much of Egypt’s Divan, managed to keep up with the demand. Noble Charlie Harper, being new on the job, ran an outstanding din-ing room, especially with the crowds of customers that showed up. And of course, we have to give credit to Noble Larry Sturniolo, General Chairman of the whole thing, who, after going through the recovery of a bad fall, made his usual superior effort. We all were pretty tired but happy by days end.

As Noble Jack Winkler is departing Sun City Center to live in Nevada, Noble Barry Lea has volunteered to step into the position of Club Quartermaster. He will now be in charge of procuring shirts, jackets, ties, badges, pins and other items used or worn by the Nobility and Ladies. A big job and we all thank Noble Barry for his cooperation and help.

Since the last report, two new members have been added to our roster. As you see Nobles Jim Hiller and Barry Myers, meet and greet them to get acquainted.

With the Snowbirds gone for the summer, monthly luncheon attendance is down a bit, so perhaps our ranks could be swelled by someone you know or in your neighborhood that might join our club. All of us should be constant membership Chairmen to help reverse the membership trend of recent times. Applications are available from Secretary Noble Gerry Munger.

KEYSTONE KOPSBy Noble George Jesky

YES, if it is free the Shriners will come! The mail-ing we wrote about last month resulted in 15 Shriners and their Ladies joining us for the picnic. This gave us the attendance we were used to having only five short years ago. In addition to the pulled pork sandwiches we served spicy sausage, onions and peppers and chicken

tenders all from Gary Taylor’s Pit Boss. There was a goodly supply of appetizers and desserts prepared lov-ingly by the Ladies of the Club. One indicator of the graying so our Club is there was still about ten pitchers left in the keg. As of this writing we have added five new members which says to me the effort was well worth it. Kudos to Keith Hatfield and Charlie McKenzie for their hard work. The best part of all was that the entire event was free to all. Sometimes a free lunch pays for itself. (I got that line from Yogi.)

The snowbirds have flown and we will settle down to our friendly close gatherings at the VFW. As usual we invite all Shriners who belong to Clubs that are dark in the summer to join us. We meet at VFW Post 10167, 4619 Bartelt Road in Holiday. The social hour starts at 11:00 am and the food appears around noon time. To ensure good attendance we have barred Keith from telling the Bible salesman story at any meeting. Try us you’ll like us!

Make sure that your chaser is not a trooper. Here’s to you, Walt.

DIRECTOR’S STAFFBy Noble Steve Jones

The year is going by quickly. We have had our Corn Boil. when it was all said and done, our event was a success. Great work for those that were able to help out, we all come together for this and the fellowship is always great. The Circus concession was a success as well. Thanks to all the brothers who could help out, especially Nobles Terry Gosnel and Don Pierson. They were the backbone of the whole operation.

This month we have our Ceremonial from June 3rd to June 4th. We have a good program in store for the can-didates. Noble Director John will for sure hand out as-signments for the Ceremonial. This is our time to shine and show the candidates what “The Staff” is all about. Come July, the Imperial Session is in Denver, CO.

As we close, remember all of our military people over-seas, they are deserving of all our prayers and thanks. By the way, thank our retired military as well. They have given their time as well.

God Bless you and your families.

FUN N’ FROLICBy Noble J. Lee “Smurf” Cornett

It is that time of the year, our northern friends have gone home to be with family and friends and we are here enjoying Florida at its finest. Hot days and warm steamy nights, life is good! Your clowns have been busy the last month and there is no slowing down in the fore-cast. Balloons up to the “Joeys” who made the trip to FSCA, most were on their first trip to a competition. These Rookie clowns had a fun time and represented the unit in true form, great job!

Besides the FSCA, the unit attended the Out Patient Fishing Tournament and various other unit functions, the Directors Staff Corn Boil and LOH BBQ dinner to name a few. Let us not forget how important it is to sup-port the other units and clubs in the Temple, when pos-sible. They rely on our support as we rely on theirs. The Spring Ceremonial is the first of June and the events seem to slow down a little, not! Keep your eye on the Boss Clowns messages as the calendar is changing daily.

Remember, if it’s not fun, don’t do it!

HIGHLANDERS PIPES & DRUMSBy NobleEd Smoak

Greetings from the Highlanders Pipes and Drums: We hope this month finds you and yours blessed by the graces of our Lord. If anyone would like to experi-ence a wee bit of Scotland please bring your family to our 2nd Annual Tartan Games, to be held at Hooper’s Hollow on the 27th of August. We will have Scottish Games Competition, games for adults and children as well as a chili cook off and other food; beer and other beverages will be in good supply. We will have mu-sic for you throughout the day and yes, we will have some bagpipes and drums thrown in for good measure as well. You will find our prices extremely low, truly

a nicely planned day that the whole family can enjoy and afford.

The Florida Shrine Association weekend will be held next weekend and by the time you read this article it will be but a fond memory. We hope and trust that all of our Egypt competing Units will again bring home the gold. I am sad to say that there has never been competi-tion for the Pipe and Drum Bands, so we sit as the ugly sister and watch as the rest of the Egypt Units show off their awards. We have been doing this for many years and are tired of sitting in the shadows, so this year My Vice President Bill Newton, Pipe Major Steve Andrews and myself are going to FSA in an attempt to take charge of setting up competition for the Pipe Bands for next year. We have the expertise and also the connections in Dunedin and can get qualified, impar-tial, certified judges for the competition, all we need is the cooperation of the FSA leaders; please keep your fingers crossed for us.

One of our snare drummers, Robert Mc Donald who is currently a Navy Officer serving in the Navy Reserve is to be congratulated as he has been given a new as-signment as the Company Commander of an Engineer Company stationed in Jacksonville Florida. His Com-pany is scheduled to deploy next June. We will contin-ue to pray that won’t happen. This appointment is good for him, but bad for the Highlanders as he spends many weekends in Jacksonville overseeing his company and is not able to play with the band. We fully support him however and are proud and pleased to have him as part of our Unit, thank you Rob for your service and that of your troops. While discussing the upcoming Ceremo-nial which will be honoring our military, we discovered that all of the members currently in the Highlanders are either active military or are military veterans; interest-ing.

In an effort to allow more members to attend our practices, we have temporarily changed our practice night to Thursday evening at 7:30 pm; our stated meet-ing will remain the second Tuesday of each month. If any of you would like to learn pipes or drums, please visit us on Thursday evening. If you just want to visit we would love to have you stop by for a drink. We have non-musical positions as well, so come on out and join us even if only to see what we do. Don’t forget to keep our Troops in your prayers and pray for their safe and timely return. They finally got Osama so I am sure the troops are celebrating as are most Americans. I will pause today and toast them for the fine work they do; maintaining freedom is no easy job. Until next month may God bless you and keep you safe.

Highlanders, continued.....

LEGION OF HONORBy Noble Nicholas A. “Nick” Schneider

It seems the Spring Break has finally smiled on Egypt Shrine and the Legion of Honor. Not a single long hot “parade” the entire month! But not to worry, the LOH was, and is, “Still Standing Tall”! Nine Circus perfor-mances with no less than NINE Legion of Honor Nobles present at any one performance to proudly Present the Colors. There were a few performances with more than that. “Well Done”, and a Proud Salute, to you all.

Military Appreciation Day, Saturday, April 30, 2011, dawned bright, clear, and just breezy enough to be com-fortable. Egypt Shrine Legion of Honor presented four outstanding members, for the in-line uniform inspec-tion. All looked picture perfect, so a big thank you all. Then, the Legion of Honor was entrusted with present-ing Our Nation’s Colors, placing ten members in the Color Guard. All marched and saluted proudly, as the national Anthem sounded with the cherished sounds for all Patriotic Americans. The Color Guard then contin-ued through the parade grounds to kick-off the Parade of Units.

Following the Parade, much camaraderie and good food was enjoyed by all. Once more the Legion of Honor wishes to thank the Aides Corps for a job well done.

PHARAOHSBy: Noble Bill DenBleyker

Greetings to all: By the time this issue is your hands we will have competed at FSA and results should be in next month’s issue. We have been practicing with eight motorcycles for last few months. Hopefully, everyone had a great time at FSA this year in Palm Beach Gar-dens. Although I haven’t been an active member the team looked great at our last few practices. We did have a couple of fender benders this year.

On behalf of our director and me we would like to thank all the riders and Pharaohs who came out for the military, law enforcement and firefighter appreciation day April 30th. We all appreciate the work they do day and day out. Also, thanks to the nobles who supported the Easter egg hunt and the Circus.

A few dates to remember Flag Day Sunday June 14th at the Tampa Masonic Center. We are proud of or coun-try so let’s show it by displaying the flag at our homes. June19th is Father’s Day hope all of my fellow Nobles have a great day. This is the time for the ladies to take us out or cook our favorite meal. Remember to read the Sands so you don’t miss out on any events. A lot of fun events are scheduled so pay attention.

We have been practicing a lot and James is getting the team ready for the Imperial Session in Denver. James and Jim Rocha you have done a great job getting the team ready for July. This will be a six man team at Den-ver.

Remember brothers if you know a person that loves to ride invite them to a meeting we need to recruit new members to take the place of folks who “retire” from the unit. We have several weeks of practice to get ready for Imperial please try to make each practice.

‘Till next month remember the children in our hospi-tals and keep the rubber side down. God Bless. Don’t forget Jill as she has been providing great meals for us. Pharaohs good luck in Denver.

Get ready for the Spring Ceremonial on Saturday June 3-4, 2011. Please get your petitions into the of-fice today! And a special thank you to all the Provost Guard members who supported the Shrine Circus. Over 22 members worked at our Circus this year. We had an excellent turnout of Nobles and everyone enjoyed the “Greatest Show on Earth”.

RITUAL TEAMBy Noble Dwight Brown

Greetings Nobles! For the New Nobles who join our caravan on June 3, you are likely reading this because you found this SANDS magazine in your New Nobles packet. We hope that you enjoy the Ceremonial Friday night. This is a return to the old days when we presented the Ritual on Friday night, and then you visit the hospital and experience the hot sands on Saturday. We hope that you will become active at our Shrine Center. There are many different Units and Clubs seeking new members. The Ritual Team is also in need of new members. If you find that you enjoyed the Ceremonial, then come join us! We have roles we need to fill, and some have few or no lines to memorize!

Your officers have other BIG news to share with you. Illustrious Sir Joe Osborne and the Elected Divan have de-cided to allow the Ritual Team to return to the Membership Room, which is on the south side of the Stu Lang Activity Building just west of the Director’s Staff Room. Those of

Provost Guard, continued.....you who have been with us a while will immediately rec-ognize it as the OLD Ritual Team Room, which we first held alone, then shared with the Egyptians, until leaving there for the Sheik’s Room behind stage. Stop by during the Showcase of Units and help us greet the new Nobles! Everything old is new again!

We will be dark for June, July and August. Our next meet-ing will be Thursday, September 1st at 7:30 in our new room! If you see the Illustrious Sir and the Elected Divan members, be sure to tell them ‘Thank You’ and give’em a hug! They’ve earned it. Thank you, Illustrious Sir Joe!

THE RITUAL TEAM NEEDS YOU!Please call Len Whalen at (813) 486-4939 or Wayne Da-

vis (813) 238-6993 for more information. In addition, we are already looking forward to the Fall

Ceremonial! We need new Nobles to initiate. We all know a man that would make a good Mason and Shriner. Get that man a petition!

WHEELS ASSOCIATIONBy: Noble Bill DenBleyker

Greetings to all: By the time this issue is your hands we will have competed at FSA and results should be in next month’s issue. Hope everyone had fun and enjoyed them-selves.

As the colonel of the wheels I would like to thank all the riders and Units who came out for the military, law enforcement and firefighter appreciation day April 30th. We all appreciate the work they do day and day out. Also, thanks to the nobles who supported the Easter egg hunt and the Circus. It was great to see the Trikes, Clowns, Tin Lizzies and other units supporting this event.

A few dates to remember Flag Day Sunday June 14th at the Tampa Masonic Center. We are proud of or country so let’s show it by displaying the flag at our homes. June19th is Father’s Day hope all of my fellow Nobles have a great day. This is the time for the ladies to take us out or cook our favorite meal. Remember to read the Sands so you don’t miss out on any events. A lot of fun events are scheduled so pay attention.

At our meetings the subject of membership has come up and any wheeled unit that parades is invited to join. The Divan has offered to help recruit members and brothers with Divan members in attendance it’s a great way to have our voice heard. Bottom line in a military way …we are looking for more members. We need to recruit new mem-bers to take the place of folks who “retire” from the units. All of the wheeled and parading units need members.

Till next month remember the children in our hospitals and all the personnel who care for them.

God Bless.

Tampa’s historic momentTAMPA, Fla. — Eight-year-old Josalyn Kaldenberg has a new “bionic” arm thanks

to Moffitt Cancer Center surgeon G. Douglas Letson and Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa.

On Tuesday, Letson performed the first expandable total humerus replacement in the Unit-ed States on Josalyn. “This is a first-of-its-kind procedure using a Stanmore expandable en-doprosthesis in the United States with huge results,” said Letson, head of Moffitt’s Sarcoma Program who is a consulting staff member with Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa. “Josalyn is a piano player, and our biggest goal is to have her back to playing the piano again. Kids are amazing, and I’m confident that Josalyn will be playing again soon.”

Facing the prospect of having her right arm amputated, Josalyn and her parents found new hope through Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa and Moffitt. Josalyn, from Wood-ward, Iowa, was diagnosed with osteosarcoma of her right humerus in December 2010. She has received oncology treatment in Iowa, but everywhere she turned, she was faced with amputation. Her parents researched options to keep her arm. “We kept searching for alter-natives because we needed to know we did everything we could,” stated Josalyn’s mother, Heidi Kaldenberg.

Letson performed the 7hour and 46min surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa, where Josalyn is recovering this week. The collaboration of Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa, which provides expert pediatric orthopaedic care for children regardless of a families’ ability to pay, and Moffitt’s Sarcoma Program enabled Josalyn to have this groundbreaking limb salvage procedure.

“Bringing together the medical expertise of both Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa and Moffitt has changed the life of this young girl,” commented Shriners Hospitals for Children®-Tampa chief of staff, Dennis P. Grogan, M.D. Josalyn lost most of the muscle in her right shoulder when Letson removed the tumor. She’s expected to experience significant weakness in the shoulder and some weakness in the elbow, but she’s thrilled to still have her arm. She will begin aggressive physical therapy in about two months and will eventually have her prosthetic lengthened with minimally invasive surgery as she grows.

Shriners Hospitals for Children® is a pediatric health care system of 22 hospitals dedicat-ed to improving the lives of children by providing specialty care, innovative research and outstanding teaching programs. Children up to age 18 with orthopaedic conditions, burns, spinal cord injuries, and cleft lip and palate are eligible for care and receive all services in a family-centered environment, regardless of the patients’ ability to pay. Shriners Hospitals for Children® relies on the generosity of donors to deliver this mission every day.

In Print: St. Petersburg Times, Monday, April 4, 2011

This is a picture of my first motorcycle. I was 18 when this was taken. It is a 1930 Harley-Davidson 74-cubic-inch flat head. I rode it for several years and then started stunt riding at Plant Park Fair Grounds and race tracks during racing intermissions. I was a motorcycle officer for many years. I worked with the Tampa Police Department from 1945 to 1968 when I retired. I stopped riding in 1998. I wore out two Indians and a Harley or two. I graduated from H.B. Plant High School. I am now going on 92 years and going strong. Somehow I “acquired” the name Wild Bill. Maybe it was because I cleaned out a bar in Ybor City when I walked a beat.

Doesn’t Bill look great! I saw this in the St. Petersburg Times and had hoped to get in the May issue but we had lots to include in May so here’s the article. Noble Bill is a member of the Provost Guard Unit and has been a member of Egypt Shrine since June 15, 1991 so I guess the June issue was the appropriate issue after all. Our warmest wishes to Noble Bill and his Lady Ada.

How do I copy pictures from the Sands issues posted on our

website?

This question comes up from time to time, so here’s how:

First, go to the website at http://egyptshrine.org. Navigate to the isue you want to copy from.

Left click on the picture you want to copy, it will turn a “blueish” color.

Press the “Ctrl” key along with the letter “C”

On a blank page or text of an email, click on any spot and press the “Ctrl” key along with the “V” and the picture will appear. At this point you can click on it and by using one of the corner “handles” you

can resize it.

You can also select “text” “ads”, etc, anything that “highlights” even entire pages. Just place the cur-sor in the upper left hand corner of what you want

to copy, hold down on the left click button and drag is across the items you want to copy. They too

will then be “blueish” in color. Call me if you have any trouble.

Arizona does not remember when she started noticing that her ears protrud-ed too much, she just remembers that she never pulled her hair back without wearing a headband and has always been self-conscious about her ears.

“People started to make comments a few years ago,” said her mom, Steph-anie. “We’ve thought about this sur-gery for two years. It was a hard deci-sion for us to make. No one wants to think about cosmetic plastic surgery on a young girl.”

Arizona’s family knew a young boy who had the same surgery at Shriners Hospitals for Children® – Cincinnati, so in addition to talking with them, Stephanie thoroughly researched her options and got second opinions. “We met with several doctors in the area, but knew our best option was with Shriners Hospitals for Children®,” said Stephanie.

“Probably no other physical character-istic indicates a need for plastic sur-gery than protruding ears,” said Kevin Yakuboff, MD, FACS, FAAPS, chief of plastics at Shriners Hospitals for Chil-dren® – Cincinnati. “Even if the ears are only mildly distorted, protruding ears can lead to self-consciousness and comments from other children.”

About Ear SurgeryWhen considering otoplasty, parents must be confident that they have their child’s best interest at heart. A positive attitude toward the surgery is an important factor, especially when the patient is a child or adolescent. When it comes to otoplasty, conventional wisdom is the earlier the better. The surgery is relatively simple, as the surgeon makes a small incision behind the ear, in the natural fold where the ear is joined to the head. The surgeon removes the necessary amounts of cartilage and skin required to achieve the right effect for the patient. The risks are minimal to this surgery. There will be a thin white scar behind the ear after healing. Children are generally seen once prior to surgery by the medical team in Cincinnati. Surgery can be scheduled often within 8-12 weeks after the first appointment. After surgery, patients are seen in 7-10 days with one or two follow-up visits after the first post-op visit.

Ear surgery makes it possible to correct a flaw that can often undermine one’s self-confidence. By changing how you look, this surgery can help change how you feel about yourself.
