THE NEWSLETTER OF THE SYDNEY DIVISION OF ENGINEERS AUSTRALIA JUNE 2011
The Road AheadI love living in Sydney. I love how it’s an urban sprawl of pockets of micro-cities which are culturally dense, and where you can go for any type of culinary delight. But, simply put, the traffic is driving me crazy. Every day I commute to work along one of Sydney’s busiest roads. I travel from the north to the eastern suburbs, and to tell you the truth, I avoid the Harbour Tunnel like the plague. I think the tunnel is a significant engineering achievement. However, I do personally believe that it probably should have been built with more than just two lanes heading each way – a slight oversight I guess on the population growth in Sydney (construction on the tunnel commenced in 1988). But as a result, as I travel to work I think about the state’s infrastructure.
The new state government recently announced the formation of Infrastructure NSW, which is headed by the former State Premier – Nick Greiner. I definitely think that he has a tough road ahead. If you think about it, infrastructure includes everything from roads and rail to schools, hospitals, shopping centres, airports, and electricity. It is intertwined with the social studies of population growth and movement, industrial and urban development, and city planning. The fact is, in order to get our infrastructure back on track, this will be a team effort with people from many different professions working together to make it happen. And it will require significant investment from both state and federal levels, as well as bipartisan support.
But what I think it needs, is a visionary. Someone to look at not only Sydney, but also the state, in a big-picture sort of way. As a starting point, I hope that Infrastructure NSW looks at the
Infrastructure Report Card which Engineers Australia published last year. The report card found that the state’s infrastructure is generally in average to poor condition, and reviewed transport, water, and energy, and listed recommendations for the consideration of the public and the state (you can see the report card here: http://www.engineersaustralia.org.au/ircnsw/).
I also hope that we look into and push innovative solutions to the problems that exist. I recently saw an article which showed a Chinese innovation of a bus which allows cars to pas underneath. We only need to look at our Asian neighbours and their train networks to realise the potential of what can be achieved with respect to transport, and yet still push beyond that as our needs, population distribution, and landscape are significantly different. We also need to make sure that the plan encompasses the growth of the state and the country as a whole, and that it is a plan which reaches well beyond just a few years and far into this century. In the meantime, I’ll go back to battling Sydney traffic.

Deputy President’s CornerIt’s time for the engineering profession to stand up and deliver, to be proud of what’s been achieved, be prepared to innovate and embrace change, while always planning and communicating the way ahead – engineers are one of the few professionals which ‘make it so’.
Yet, the nature of engineering is so diverse. Apart from the geographical Divisions within Engineers Australia, there are at least 8 Colleges spanning the range of engineering disciplines, and a multitude of Groups, Panels, Technical Societies and Committees which have been formed by volunteers to bring focus and relevance to all aspects of our profession.
It’s time to renew your Membership with Engineers Australia. But did you realise that you have an opportunity to participate beyond your basic membership by joining a variety of Technical Societies, such as the Risk Engineering Society for example. Dual Membership discounts are also available, including for those who are members of IPWEA – membership of which is open to any engineer involved with Public Works Engineering, and not just those who work for a Council.
If you haven’t done so recently I’d encourage you to visit the EA Website (www.engineersaustralia.org.au) which now includes a live listing of the various events and seminars that you can register online to attend.
If you would like to get involved in shaping Engineers Australia and its various groups, please make contact, and help to make it so.
Brendyn Williams BE(Civil)(Hons) MIEAust FIPWEADeputy President, Engineers Australia Sydney Division
PNG Engineer accredited by Engineers Australia as Stage 1 Assessor for IEPNGIn 2009 Engineers Australia signed a MOU with the Institution of Engineers of PNG with an underlying agreement that both associations would collaborate to progressively enhance registration standards of engineers and procedures in PNG. In this context IEPNG will now adopt the Engineers Australia Stage 1 Competency Assessment system for applicants wishing to join their organisation and will therefore need the services of a competent assessor to perform this task. Mr Sen Hugo has received training from Sydney-based Stage 1 Assessors and has been formally accredited as Stage 1 Assessor for the Institution of Engineers Papua New Guinea (IEPNG) with effect from 28 April 2011. Mr Hugo, a past President of IEPNG, holds a BE (Civil) from the PNG University of Technology as well a Post Graduate Diploma in Earthquake Engineering.
Dr Guy Beaubois Stage 1 Assessor, Roland de Broglio Stage 2 Assessor, Sen Hugo Stage 1 Assessor for IEPNG, Steve Finlay Executive Director Sydney Division, Dr Maurice Allen Stage 1 Assessor.
ENGINEERS SYDNEY JUNE 2011 3
NEWS
Young EngineersEngineers Australia has been hosting many events throughout the year to highlight and underscore the Year of Humanitarian Engineering. I have had the privilege of attending several of these events, however quite often I have been left wondering how I can get involved. That was until YEAS held the event Get Involved: Be the Humanitarian Engineer last month where 3 exceptional speakers shared their stories about humanitarian engineering work that they have fulfilled and are continuing to develop. As I sat there listening to each of the speakers I became aware of what was required to get involved! Just do it! A shining testament to this mantra is Corinna Grace, a young engineer who quit her steady, well-paying job here in Sydney and setup Project Seres (http://projectseres.org), an organisation whose aim it is to educate communities in Central America about climate change and how they can adapt to ensure the continuance of a sustainable existence. Through the use of innovative engineering and by listening to the needs of the community, Corinna and her team at Seres have empowered hundreds of people throughout the region, allowing them to secure their own futures.
For those who aren’t quite ready to quit their job there are plenty of other ways to get involved. For instance, Engineers Without Borders (http://www.ewb.org.au) offer many opportunities for young engineers to apply their technical and problem solving skills to shorter term projects that have real and tangible humanitarian outcomes. Further many engineering companies have very close ties with not for profit organisations that work full-time on helping communities throughout the developing world. Interestingly, it has been shown that these companies that support humanitarian causes are seeing greater success throughout their business due to an increased number of inspired and motivated engineers who want to make a difference. So for those who are dreaming of it and passionate about it, get involved and JUST DO IT!
On the YEAS front, coming up on Thursday 7 July, YEAS in partnership with Davies Collison Cave is holding the annual Young Entrepreneurs Workshop. This event has been running for many years now and always proves to be an amazing night. This year we have assembled some of Australia’s most successful entrepreneurs who will share their experiences on how they made their ideas a reality. As always there will be insight provided by innovation and commercialisation experts on how young entrepreneurs can maximise their prospects and deliver their ideas to the world. So put this one in your calendars and ensure you register quickly so
that you don’t miss out. For more information and how to register check out our website below or find the event on Facebook.
As part of Australian Engineering Week, YEAS in support of Engineers Without Borders (EWB) will be holding our annual Trivia Night at the Lowenbrau in The Rocks on Thursday 28th July. This is great evening of trivia fun and you will also get the chance to learn a bit about EWB and what they do. For more information on the event and how to register, check out our website and Facebook.
I hope to see you at one of our events soon!James Bencke
YEAS Chairperson
If you are interested in getting involved or learning more about YEAS please email our secretary Patrick James at [email protected]. For upcoming YEAS events please visit our website at www.engineersaustralia.org.au/yeasyd/ or join our Facebook group: Young Engineers Australia Sydney.
Illawarra/Sutherland region newsThe Illawarra/Sutherland Regional Office was invited to participate in the Smith’s Hill High School Careers Afternoon on Wednesday 23 March. The Regional Office was one of 39 exhibitors participating and generated much interest from the students in Years 10, 11 and 12 and their Parents. Giving me a helping hand was Emelia Fabris, Drew Clements, David Gilbert and Jane Smalley all YEA-I Committee Members.
The Regional Office was also invited to the Illawarra Credit Union Careers Expo held on Tuesday 10 and Wednesday 11 May at the Illawarra Credit Union Sports Stadium. A total of 5,000 students from 25 Illawarra High Schools as well as High Schools from the Southern Highlands and Shoalhaven attended. The most popular Engineering Disciplines were: Mechanical, Mechatronics, Civil and Mining. Helping out from the YEA-I Committee were: Emelia Fabris, Drew Clements and Richard Peters.
On Wednesday 30 March Chris Hadenham (ISRG Chair), Jon Thompson and Peter Nasta presented the Engineers Australia Illawarra/Sutherland Region Excellent Awards to the winners at the TAFE NSW – Illawarra Institute Faculty of Trades and Technology Graduation Ceremony, which was held at the Master Builders Club in Wollongong. The Winners were: Zeljko Horvat – Engineering Advanced Diploma, Wesley Hockey – Electrical Engineering Diploma, David Mansfield – Mechanical Engineering Diploma and Mark Hulme – Civil Engineering Diploma and Overall Winner of the Engineers Australia Shield. Each winner received a trophy, certificate and cheque for $300.
Dom Figliomeni, Port Corporation CEO presented a seminar on the Port Kembla Outer Harbour Development on Wednesday 13 April at the University of Wollongong to 69 members and guests. With the recent development of the Inner Harbour at Port Kembla for new trades including the car import business for NSW, Port Kembla Port Corporation is now looking to the Outer Harbour to further expand trade opportunities.
Dom gave an overview of the Master Plan for the Outer Harbour
development including terminal and berth layouts and trade types. In addition a Rail Master Plan is being prepared as rail transport will be the primary land transport mode for the development. The objectives of this plan and the way options are being approached were also touched upon.
The Young Engineers Australia – Illawarra held a Workshop on Resume Development, Networking and Interview Techniques on Tuesday 12 April at the University of Wollongong. Guest Speaker was Graeme Hodder, Senior Associate from 360 HR. Graeme has been presenting these Workshops for many years, giving expert advice and useful tips. A total of 35 members and guests attended.
The Young Engineers Australia – Illawarra Young Professionals Evening was held on Wednesday 4 May at the Lagoon Restaurant in Wollongong with 94 members and guests attending. The Event was sponsored by Douglas Partners, BlueScope Steel, Hatch, Wollongong City Council and BHP Billiton Illawarra Coal. Guest Speaker was Jonathan Pelham, Associate from 360 HR who spoke on the Importance of Networking.
On Wednesday 11 May, Dr Mike Dennis, Research School of Engineering at the Australia National University presented a Seminar on Solar Currency – Opportunity & Imperative to 53 members and guests.
There has never been a greater imperative to critically review the way in which energy services are provided to us. Amongst a suite of technologies challenging the status quo is solar energy.
The presentation began by discussing progress in mainstream solar energy
including concentrating solar thermal power and photovoltaics. Some emerging technologies were then presented, including solar air conditioning, system integration and export of solar energy. The presentation concluded by proposing some future energy scenarios for Australia.

ENGINEERS SYDNEY JUNE 2011 7
NEWS EVENTS
Valemus Autumn Engineering School 11-15 AprilThe Valemus (Lend Lease’s Infrastructure Business) Autumn School is an Engineers Australia Sydney Division initiative. With the support of Valemus, NSW ‘Engineering’ Universities and participating Rotaries it was successfully run for the second time this year in April. The major aim of the Autumn School is to give NSW high school students a better understanding of what engineering is and how it works in everyday life.
With an estimated shortfall of 25,000 engineers by 2012, the Autumn School is a resource to ensure that young people have engineering in the forefront of their minds when looking at career options.
During the week-long program the Autumn School students met and interacted with professional engineers employed by government, private companies, researchers and academics from a wide range of engineering backgrounds. They gained valuable insight into career opportunities available to men and women in engineering. Visits to industry provided a valuable opportunity to gain first hand experience in the role of professional engineers in a wide range of activities, including the management of major projects. The students learnt about the role of professional engineers in society and different disciplines within engineering.
The Valemus Autumn Engineering School brought together 50 Year 11 and 12 students from the Sydney and some regional NSW areas. Some of the students were funded or partly funded by Rotary and their high schools.
Valemus Autumn School students attended lectures and demonstrations at the University of Sydney; University of New South Wales; University of Technology, Sydney and University of Newcastle.
Site visits the students attended included Qantas, RailCorp, Sydney Water – St Mary’s Water Treatment Plant, Hunter Expressway and Varley Group.
Another significant program inclusion was the Careers evening where students had the opportunity to meet and talk informally with a broad range of engineers. Guests included – Ian Craig, Dusko Bajic, Andrew Bagnall, Jeremy Capodicasa, Tim Cook, Adrian McRae and Sally Gillbert.
In response to the Survey Report question of “do you think you will
go on to study engineering”, the response was overwhelming with 98% responding YES, with mechanical and mechatronic engineering identified as the discipline the majority of the students wish to study at university followed by civil.
The Valemus Autumn Engineering School was a great success and we look forward to running the event again next year and seeing an even greater interest in the program and the field of engineering.
Our sincere thanks are extended to Valemus (Lend Lease’s Infrastructure Business) for their sponsorship, Rotary Clubs for their financial assistance to some of the students, the participating Universities, the people who made the site visits possible, Careers Evening guests and last but certainly not least the students who all contributed in making The Valemus Autumn Engineering School 2011 a wonderful success.
