Body and Blood of Christ 2

Pastor’s Corner…Today we celebrate the Feast of the Body & Blood of Christ, known by many as “Corpus Christi.” Every Feast Day of the Church serves to instruct and remind us. I believe the Church puts this Feast of Corpus Christi in front of us each year to help us appreciate all the more, the wonderful gift of the Eucharist.

At every Eucharist we experience Christ’s love for us poured out upon the cross - an experience of the saving grace that continues to flow from Christ’s cross and resurrection – a foretaste of the promise of heaven and everlasting life with Christ. In every Eucharist Christ unites himself with us, Body, Blood, Soul and Divinity, to strengthen us, to live in us, to love through us, to unite us as members of His Body, the Church. Every Eucharist is a call to become what we eat. Our sharing in the Eucharist is a reminder that we’re on a journey toward the complete and endless sharing with Christ at the eternal banquet of heaven. May today’s Feast instill yet a deeper appreciation for the gift of the Eucharist.

This Feast always has a special place in my life. It was on the Feast of Corpus Christi that I celebrated my First Mass as a priest! It’s always a day of gratitude for me. I’m still in awe that the Lord uses this instrument to offer his Sacrifice and feed his people with his life in Holy Communion.

One of the things I heard time and again when we were closed and under the stay-at-home order was that people missed going to Holy Communion. Yes, we had Mass online and folks were so grateful, but many told me that not being able to go to communion was a real void for them. It echoes the words of the Psalm 42: “As the deer longs for running streams, so my soul is thirsting for you, my God.” It’s been great to see more people slowly coming back to Mass, they realize how much they missed it and being away instilled a greater appreciation. For those in a high-risk category who are still not comfortable gathering in church, they so appreciate the opportunity to receive communion on Sundays in the parking lot. It’s great to witness so much love for the Eucharist in our Nativity community. And it’s also wonderful to witness the many ways that receiving communion is translated into works of mercy and service and being the Body of Christ for others.

This Friday celebrates the Solemnity of the Most Sacred Heart of Jesus. You may remember the story – It was 17th century France, Jesus appeared to Sister Margaret Mary Alacoque. It was a time when many people saw Jesus as distant from their lives. They were not receiving Holy Communion. Some were feeling entirely cut off from God. Jesus showed himself to Margaret Mary as she knelt in adoration before the Blessed Sacrament. Jesus appeared wearing his heart exposed, aflame with love for all people. He asked Margaret Mary to help others understand how personal His love for every person. The devotion had a deep impact in the life of the Church, resulting in greater realization for the need for prayer, more frequent reception of Holy Communion, greater realization of Christ’s presence with us, the conversion of sinners, peace in families, the promotion of Gospel love –“love one another as I have loved you” and reinforced final perseverance at life’s end and the hope of eternal life.

The message and devotion of the Sacred Heart is as applicable and needed as ever! Perhaps during this month of June, look at the image of the Sacred Heart and hear Jesus tell you how much he loves you, and in turn, tell him how much you love him! “Jesus, meek and humble of heart, make my heart like unto Thine.” We have included the Litany of the Sacred Heart in this bulletin, page 7, for part of our prayer this week.

Please keep our own Jim Mullin and the other candidates in your prayers as they will be ordained Permanent Deacons next Saturday. May the Spirit of Jesus, who came to serve and gave the great example for us when he washed the feet of his disciples, always live in them and be their model for ministry.

Sacred Heart of Jesus unite each of us and our families in your love.Have a great Week!Fr. Mike

Connecting GraduatesConnecting your graduates to Campus Ministry is Incredibly important now. Life, as your high school seniors have known it, feels canceled this year. With spring sports, proms, senior trips, awards and recognition ceremonies canceled, our Catholic students are feeling down and defeated. As uncertainty continues to build, we want you to remember one thing: Your students future is not canceled.

It is still important to connect your students to the campus minister at their chosen college so they can connect with other students of the same faith. With Newman Connection, making this happen is easy.

High school grads, please send your name, college choice and email or cell to Liz Hagen at [email protected] to get connected to your Newman Center.

New Parish AppThe parish has a new app available for download. If you had the old app, it is obsolete, so please delete it and download the new one!

The app is a great way to receive notifications, find daily readings, give online and more. You DO NOT need the app to watch Mass.
