Whether as statues or on
stained glass, the image of the
Sacred Heart of Jesus can be
found in churches all over the
world. Jesus looks down, one
hand extended out and another
pointing to a heart wreathed in
thorns and glowing with light.
In the Sacred Heart, we see
both the sorrow and the joy of
the life of Christ, who became
one of us out of love. "Jesus
knew and loved us each and
all during his life, his agony,
and his Passion and gave him-
self up for each one of us: He
has loved us all with a human
heart" (CCC 478). In the In-
carnation, God becomes man.
Jesus experienced the fullness
of humanity, including its suf-
ferings. June 8th is the Feast
of the Sacred Heart. We re
member all that Jesus endured
for us.
We also remember why
he endured it -- out of love.

SACRAMENTS
Today the Church celebrates the mystery of Christ’s life-giving presence among us in the Eucharist. In the first reading
we read about ratifying a covenant. In biblical times a covenant between two parties created a bond as close as a blood
relationship, committing the partners to one another’s welfare. The ritual of sealing a covenant involved a sacrifice that
shed blood, expressing a willingness to give one’s life for the other. In Exodus, the altar represents God and the sprin-
kling of blood on both the altar and the people signifies a new relationship and commitment; they are now members of
one family.
The second reading focuses on the self-sacrificing blood of Christ, mediator of a new covenant, in which Jesus through
his death, offers himself to God. He thus forms a new relationship between God and believers, one nourished by his own
forgiving presence. Through his self-sacrifice, we Christians have new life, divine life that sustains and nourishes our
relationship with God.
In the Gospel, Mark also implies a New Covenant sealed by a new sacrifice. He places the supper on the day that Pass-
over lambs were sacrificed and refers to the “blood of the covenant.” He thus suggests that Jesus’ life-giving blood
brings both a new relationship to God and new freedom. This is a freedom from slavery, sin and death. The “blood of
Christ” offers new life with God and one another, given in every Eucharist.
Take, bless, break and share. The four-fold action is at the heart of what the Church does when we celebrate the Eucha-
rist. Through the power of the Holy Spirit, bread and wine are transformed into the Body and Blood of Christ and we
who receive it are empowered by the same Spirit to be Christ to the world. Today, as the Eucharist is celebrated around
the world, we all continue to share in this life-giving covenant between God and humanity!

Some Church Humor:
The children were lined up in the cafeteria of a Catholic elementary school for lunch. At the head of the
table was a large pile of apples. The nun made a note, and posted on the apple tray: "Take only ONE.
God is watching." Moving further along the lunch line, at the other end of the table was a large pile of
chocolate chip cookies. A child had written a note, "Take all you want. God is watching the apples.

The Body and Blood of Christ – Faith has many impor-
tant facets that are effective in our lives. Prayer and wor-
ship connect us to the God who created us and who daily
gives us purpose and provides for us. Times of community
and fellowship unite us with our family in faith to realize
that we are not alone on our journey of love with God.
Outreach and charity put our faith into action so that we
can be the hands and heart of Jesus in the world and pro-
vide for the needs of others. Yet, at the heart of our faith,
its essential foundation, is the gift of God himself to his
people, the Eucharist. The Eucharist is the memorial of
God’s great act of love for us, the death and resurrection
of his Son, Jesus. The Eucharist is the Body and Blood of
Christ made truly present so that we might be nourished to
do the work of God in the world. The Eucharist is the
source of our life as people of faith and that to which we
return all that we have received in thanksgiving to God.
Inspired by this Feast of Corpus Christi and as we journey
On Mission for The Church Alive! may our love for the
Eucharist increase so that our faith may remain strong in
the midst of change. Visit onmissionchurchalive.org to
learn more and to stay informed.
