LEARNING AT A GLANCE! GRADE 1 & 2

A Boatload of Fun MRS. MCDONOUGH

This week our class went on an outdoor

scavenger hunt to look for signs of spring!

Students noticed trees budding, flowers

growing, ice melting and grass getting green.

They were very excited to find signs of

animals waking up and returning! We found

birds' nests, saw geese flying back north,

uncovered bunny dens, got amazing videos of

hummingbirds and noticed more active

squirrels. We’re all waiting patiently and

holding our breath for baby animals!

KINDERS

Welcome to the World!

MRS. WILLIAMS & MRS. COSSETTE

Special Delivery!

Kindergarten students were very busy

this week writing letters to residents at

the Evanston Grand Village long term

care facility. It was explained that

many of the residents have not been

able to have family or friends visit for

a few months now. Students have

learned that these letters will make

those that receive them feel loved!

Some students included paintings and

drawings and even pictures of

themselves. Stay tuned…in a couple

of weeks we will share the letters

being read! Way to go Kindergarten!

Grade 1 and 2 students have been

creating and testing boats out of

materials they can find around the

house! Our creative kiddos made

boats out of lemons, tinfoil,

cardboard, sponges and more. After

that they experimented to see how

many coins their boat could hold and

how sturdy it was in the water.

GRADE 2 & 3

Our Little Authors! MRS. MARSHALL

The Grade 2’s and 3’s completed their novels and

made such excellent stories! The children drew

creative title pages and added beautiful illustrations

to their work. Each child made a video where they

read their story and shared the pictures. All our class

videos were put on our google classroom so that

everyone in our class could listen to their friends’

books. The effort and enthusiasm about this creative

task has been really inspiring and so many children

said, ‘’I LOVED writing my own story!”

Way to go everyone!

Tanbridge Kinders have been hard at work this spring learning about life

cycles of plants, insects, and animals. Over the past month they have been

video documenting the incubation of 5 baby ducks and are very excited to

announce they have all hatched, healthy and amazingly adorable! Please meet

Chunk, Georgina, Ollie, Nuts, and Lincoln… 5 little ducks that love to swim,

cuddle huddle, and play with Hank the dog. It’s been such a fun experience

for our kinders to watch them hatch this week, and watch their personalities

develop as they grow.

GRADE 4

Paleontology & Cards & Plants, Oh My! MRS. GOODWIN

Well it’s truly been a busy couple of months in Grade 4! As we head into

the

GRADE 5

New Novel Study

Begins MRS. KRISTON

We started our final novel study of the

year in Grade 5 this week! We are

reading The Sky is Falling by Canadian

author, Kit Pearson. The main character

of the novel, Norah, is adjusting to a

new life in England, and eventually

Canada, during WWII. We have had

some great discussions relating our

current life changes to Norah’s

experiences.

GRADE 6

A Story of Bravery and Loyalty

MRS. ALI

GRADE 7

The Grateful Journal

MRS. CASHION

In grade 7, we’ve been reading the inspirational novel “Freak the Mighty” and have had many

lively discussions over google meets. Students take on a role every week as a “Summarizer”,

“Literature Luminary”, “Connector” or “Question Master”. Each of these roles looks at

different aspect of the story, and each week, a different student leads the discussion. It has been

incredible seeing how the students have thoughtfully engaged in these literature circles, each

bringing their own unique perspective and personality into the discussions. Hopefully, many

future book clubs are inspired from this experience!

It’s hard to believe it’s June already! Our Grade 4 class has been so busy learning

online about Waste and Our World, and how we can reduce, reuse and recycle. We

have also been learning about Alberta’s amazing fossil heritage. Friday was Fun Day,

and we made Community Care Cards to send to a seniors residence in McKenzie

Towne to brighten our elderly community members. We also made a chocolate cake

in a mug! I am so proud of all my students, this hasn’t been an easy couple of months

and I miss you all very much, but I know that everyone has tried their best and

worked very hard to adjust in this difficult time.

The Grade 6’s just started reading Deborah Ellis’s exhilarating

novel, The Breadwinner. This award-wining novel is about

survival, family and friendship during the Taliban’s rule in

Afghanistan.

Students have been participating in some very intense discussions

about the rights of women and children during this time and have

been sharing their thoughts and ideas using their designated

literature circle roles.

GRADE 5

Pet Peeve Poetry MRS. KRISTON

Every morning, the Grade 7’s complete a journal entry describing 3 things they are

grateful for. Then each person shares one thing from their list with the class. We

have been doing this since April 6- that’s 8 weeks and 120 grateful items per

student and 960 grateful items for the whole class! From trampolines and bike

rides to warm cups of tea and fridges full of food, we have learned that in spite of

tough circumstances, there’s always something to be grateful for.

PAGE 3

For the month of May, Grade 5 students learned about different types of figurative language as part of their poetry unit. After learning about

similes (comparisons between two unlike things) and hyperboles

(extreme exaggerations), students wrote poems about their pet peeves

using those types of figurative language. Not surprisingly, the most

popular pet peeve this year though was related to the COVID-19 situation! Students were very creative in expressing their annoyance

with their chosen pet peeve through figurative language. A simile or

hyperbole from each of their poems are pictured to the right.

GRADE 8

Grade 8’s Get Their Feet Wet with Marine Biology Projects MR. MCCOLL

Grade 9

TGIF!

MS. FOSTER AND MRS. THOBEN

Grade 9’s have started a new

unit in Science learning

about Electricity. Chris

Chiasson was generous

enough to join us during our

Google Meet last week and

Culinary Arts in Your Very Own Home! Looking for a tasty and refreshing treat that is easy to make? Try these healthy fudgesicles! Tag Tanbridge if you make

these delicious treats! We would love to see some of you in action…either making or eating them

Every Friday afternoon, the Grade 9’s gather online for ‘Fun

& Games.’ This time is a great opportunity to try and gain a

small sense of normalcy and some bonding time away from

their academics with their classmates and teachers! The

teachers look forward to organizing it each week and to see

who will rise to the top in each different game. Students

have enjoyed games of Pictionary, Scattergories, Uno,

Charades, and Code Names.

PAGE 4

This month the Grade 8’s will be ending off their water unit by

showing their creative side. Each student is developing a funny but

factual magazine cover and article which explores the ecology of a

marine animal. We are hoping to showcase these magazines in the

Grade 8 classroom at the end of the year!
