This is music as old as the hills themselves, a melting pot of Irish, English, and Scottish tunes that permeated Appalachian culture and rural America, based on field recordings of old-time and Appalachian singers.

Chris BRUBECK: Danza del Soul (premiere) • Michael GANDOLFI: Line Drawings (premiere) • Lukas FOSS: Central Park Reel

“‘Line Drawings’ was inspired by the improvisational fluidity of Picasso, but the resulting emphasis on melodic counterpoint also made for music in the spirit of Bach … [they] gave the piece a crisp, objective surface, but also found pools of gentle melancholy when the tempo eased.” — Boston Globe (live performance review)

This debut album contains two world premiere recordings. The first, “Danza del Soul” for mixed sextet, is by Chris Brubeck. Chris bears one of the most distinguished names in American music as the son/collaborator of jazz musician and composer Dave Brubeck. This piece is quite theatrical and jazz-inspired; it is “soul music that goes dancing” according to Boston music critic Steven Ledbetter. The second world premiere recording is “Line Drawings” in five movements by Michael Gandolfi. He notes: “None of my pieces is tethered to a precise Picasso drawing, but they are written in the spirit of the Picasso works: concise, clear, written with a sense of immediacy and sureness of stroke, light and airy.” Both pieces were performed to great acclaim at the Tanglewood Festival in August 2010.

J.S. BACH: The Well-Tempered Clavier, Book I

“I decided not to record this work until my 50s.” So says Abdel Rahman El Bacha, the distinctive and accomplished pianist—and winner of the Queen Elisabeth International Competition by a unanimous judgment in 1978. This milestone by J.S. Bach requires a certain maturity, and for El Bacha the time has come. Playable in all CD players. For optimal sound, use compatible surround sound system.

Sergei Edelmann: piano

SCHUMANN: Fantasy in C, Op. 17 • Arabesque in C, Op. 18 • Symphonic Etudes, Op. 13

“Sergei Edelmann is a Byronic piano player. There is a virtuosity and glitter to everything he touches … His playing was marked by velocity, a prismatic sense of tonal color, and a charged athleticism that was often very exciting.” — New York Times

Sergei Edelmann released numerous recordings for RCA before taking a long hiatus from the recording market. Now, he blazes dramatically back with a series of splendid recordings for TRITON! Playable in all CD players. For optimal sound, use compatible surround sound system.

Ludwig Güttler is one of the most famous trumpeters of our time: a sensitive and highly diversified

musician. Together with Leipzig instrument maker Friedbert Syhre, he has developed a corno da caccia that

can be played with a trumpet mouthpipe or mouthpiece. To bring this instrument, its sound, and its history to

new listeners, Güttler presents three CDs to which he has personally contributed valuable booklet notes.

George Frideric HANDEL Alexander’s Feast

Ludus Baroque/Sophie Bevan: soprano/Ed Lyon: tenor/William Berger: bass/Richard Neville-Towle: conductor

HANDEL: Alexander’s Feast (complete oratorio)

Handel’s musical illustration of Dryden’s Alexander’s Feast, first performed in 1736, was a critical and popular success. Twice a year some of the UK’s finest baroque players and young vocal soloists come together in Edinburgh’s Canongate Kirk to give sell-out concerts of the great works of Bach and Handel. Ludus Baroque’s appearances are unmissable events in Edinburgh’s calendar. Now, for the first time, listeners from further afield can experience the vibrancy of their festival-fuelled performances in this their debut recording. Alexander’s Feast is the perfect showpiece for the vitality and abandon of Ludus Baroque and their rising-star soloists.

Following their highly acclaimed recording of the 16th-century John Taverner, Duncan Ferguson and his Edinburgh choir turn their attention to one of the 19th century’s compositional giants. This sequence of motets—among them several little-known gems—is a testament to Bruckner’s profound Catholic faith, and these performances blaze with fire and fervor in the vast cathedral’s icy acoustic.

BACH: Toccata and Fugue in D Minor

Jonathan Carney comes from a unique musical family background. As all six members of his family graduated from the Juilliard School in New York, music was a constant influence from an early age. After leaving Juilliard, where he studied from the age of eight with Christine Dethier and Ivan Galamian, Jonathan moved to England on a Leverhulme Fellowship Award and continued his studies at the Royal College of Music in London. Before being appointed Leader of the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, he toured the Americas and the Far East as a leader and soloist with orchestras from Europe and North America. Jonathan has been the concertmaster of the Baltimore Symphony Orchestra since 2002.

Royal Philharmonic OrchestraJames Lockhart: conductor

BEETHOVEN: Symphony No. 2 in D Major, Op. 36 • Symphony No. 8 in F Major, Op. 93

James Lockhart, born in Edinburgh, began his professional conducting career as assistant to Nicolai Maiko with the Yorkshire Symphony Orchestra and later became assistant conductor of the BBC Scottish Orchestra. Following a period in continental opera houses, he was on the music staff of the Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Sadlers Wells Opera. Later, as a member of the conducting staff at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, he was awarded the Solti Scholarship for the most promising young British musician. His first major appointment was in 1968 as the Music Director of the emergent Welsh National Opera, and during his five years there he set the company on the road to international recognition. There followed another prestigious appointment as Generalmusikdirektor of the Staatstheater Kassel, where he became the first British conductor to hold such a position in a German opera house. He has toured in Canada with the BBC Welsh Symphony Orchestra, and in the US he has conducted the San Diego Opera and English National Opera during their historic visit to the Metropolitan Opera, New York.

MOZART: Piano Concerto in D Minor, K. 466 • Piano Concerto in B-Flat Major, K. 595

Ivor Bolton was educated at Clare College and the Royal College of Music, followed by a year at the National Opera Studio, which coincided with his appointment as conductor of the Schola Cantorum of Oxford. He served as the Chief Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra and is long established as one of Britain’s most active and versatile conductors, both in opera and concert. In addition to his post as the Chief Conductor of the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, Bolton served as the Music Director of English and Glyndebourne Touring Opera companies. Following a performance of Cosi Fan Tutte at the Aldeburgh Festival, his performance was described by The Times as having “a quality and standard of truly Mozartian musical understanding; Ivor Bolton conducted with both eloquence and authority.”

Mariaclara Monetti studied piano with Sandro Fuga in Turin and subsequently graduated from Benedetto Marcello in Venice. She was awarded the Gold Medal in the Viotti International Competition, and has participated in a number of other competitions with similar success. As both a recitalist and soloist with leading orchestras, she has a busy career performing throughout Europe. She has performed with the London Symphony Orchestra at the Barbican and given a recital at the Purcell Room, both greeted with much critical acclaim.
