Parents and Citizens Meeting The first meeting for Term 3 is scheduled for Tuesday next week. Once again, the meeting will be conducted over Zoom. All families are invited to attend. A link for the meeting will be emailed closer to the time.

School Uniform As the cold weather continues, a reminder that Pennant Hills High School has plenty of school uniform options for our students to keep warm and well.

The school jacket and/or jumper worn over the school’s white shirt with a white undershirt are perfect protection for wind and cold. There are also PHHS scarves available for purchase.

Hoodies, tracksuit pants, leggings and beanies/berets are not part of our uniform.

Once again, thank you to all families for their support in ensuring our school uniform is strictly adhered to.

PRINCIPAL’S REPORT

Year 8 into Year 9 Subject Selection Last week saw the dissemination of information to our Year 8 students regarding elective options for 2021.

Students were provided with a comprehensive subject information booklet in addition to instructions on how to make priority elective selections online.

At Pennant Hills High School we pride ourselves on the breadth of curriculum we are able to offer in both the mandatory and elective spheres. It has been encouraging to see Year 8 students carefully read the information provided and seek advice from Head Teachers and teachers, their most valuable resource. Students appear to have followed our advice in selecting subjects that genuinely are of interest and that they think they would be good at. This best practice will ultimately lead to enjoyment, satisfaction and good results.

SLC Leadership Planning Day Following the induction of the newly elected Student Leadership Council (SLC), the team for 2020-2021 have wasted no time in commencing their planning for the next year at the annual Leadership Day last Friday.

Students spent a proactive day prioritising all the activities they have decided to undertake over the next twelve months. I am looking forward to working with new SLC and assisting them in facilitating what they hope to achieve.

Thank you to Miss Morton and Mr Banyai as they ensure our student’s voices continue to be heard at our school.

Trial HSC Examinations Congratulations to Year 12 on navigating through the Trial HSC Examinations over the last two weeks.

Students conducted themselves in an exemplary manner and are now one step closer to the main event - their Higher School Certificate scheduled for October this year.

I encourage all students to seek feedback and discuss the exams with their teachers.

HSC Drama Performance Next Wednesday evening our Year 12 Drama students will perform their HSC Drama items for staff and students.

This is their final performance opportunity before the examination scheduled for later this term.

Unfortunately, families and friends are not able to attend due to the ongoing COVID-19 management and restrictions. I am looking forward to seeing the fruits of their labour.

Parent Portal As we continue to strengthen the communication between home and school, I encourage all parents

SCHOOL ATTENDANCE POLICY

Unexplained Late Arrivals The Sentral system will issue a second slip to all late arrivals who do not have a note to justify why they have not arrived at school on time. The slip will have the student’s name, class, date and time of arrival together with provision for an explanation and signature from their parent or carer. All late slips must be signed and returned to Student Reception. Slips can be placed in the Absence Notes box located on the front counter.

Unexplained absences will be recorded as Unjustified unless a note or slip is sent to the school and will appear on the students’ School Report under attendance. Amendments to students’ attendance cannot be made later than two weeks of the original absence.

Absences All student absences from school must be explained in writing by a parent or caregiver. If your child is going to be absent from school for any reason, please phone the office as soon as possible to let us know and, most importantly, follow up with a note on your student’s first day back at school.

The Department Of Education requires that an explanation for absence MUST be provided to the school within 7 days from the first day of any period of absence. We are required to record as unjustified any absence not supported by a note from a parent/caregiver. A medical certificate is required for consecutive absences longer than 2 days.

Holidays and travel outside of school holiday periods need approval from the school if the time away from class exceeds four school days. A form can be obtained from Student Reception for all extended leave. This must be completed and returned with a copy of travel documents ie. tickets or itinery for each student applying for leave.

Please contact Student Reception on 9473 5000 if you have any questions.

STUDY SKILLS HANDBOOK NEWSLETTER TIP FOR AUGUST

Making the Most of Your Learning Learning is not just what you do in the classroom. Study is not just what you do the night before a test. Both of these are ongoing activities that are enhanced by the correct pre and post activities. See which of these 5 P’s you do.

PREPARE: This is the stage where you ensure you have all of the materials you need for learning and have completed any pre-tasks such as reading sections of your textbook in advance or any other activities your teacher asks you to complete prior to the class.

PARTICIPATE: Engaging in your learning is the best way to start to embed it in your memory and ensure you understand. Having the opportunity to discuss and interact and complete different styles of learning activities really helps your brain to process what you are learning.

PLAN: Take the time to look at the assessments for the course and plan when you will start, work on and complete tasks. Anytime you are asked to complete work for class, plan when you will do it and even better write your plan into your diary or online planner.

PRACTISE: One of the best ways to learn is to do practise questions. When you apply what you have learnt to actual questions, you will engage retrieval and cognitive pathways in the brain and reinforce your learning and uncover areas that need extra study.

PINPOINT: After a test or assessment is returned to you, celebrate your successes but also use it to pinpoint areas of weakness. This allows you to then spend time building your strengths in these areas without the pressure of an exam looming.

AN EXTRAVAGANZA OF CAPA

The Creative and Performing Arts (CAPA) Faculty are always endeavouring to provide students with opportunities to showcase their talents.

Term 3 is traditionally full of drama performances, music soirees and of course the well renowned CAPA Festival which includes the very popular Visual Arts Exhibition.

As previously advised, the 2020 CAPA Festival has been cancelled due to the management of current COVID-19 restrictions and our inability to complete works during the lockdown period. The other performances however have forged ahead with some alterations to their regular processes.

Below is a list of events scheduled for the remainder of this term. Although families and friends are not permitted to attend, we encourage all students to support our performers by giving them an enthusiastic audience to play to.

Wednesday 19 August 5.00-6.00pm - Year 12 HSC Drama present Individual Projects - performances in Room 203 followed by viewing of their designs in Room 214. Staff and students invited;

Friday 4 September 1.20-2.00pm - Year 12 HSC Visual Arts Body of Works viewing - in Rooms 4A4, 4A5 and 4A6. Staff and students invited.

CELEBRATING OUTSTANDING CAPA WORKS cont’d from front page

Year 11 Visual Arts Students are currently working on their paintings titled "Lounging in the lounge room". Making the extraordinary out of the ordinary, they took photographs of their lounge room and included family, friends, pets, interesting viewpoints, etc.

Year 11 are studying Modern Art this term, and have chosen a Modernist Artist to influence their painting styles and colour schemes. They have four more weeks to complete their paintings and are working with great enthusiasm as they learn new painting skills and are inspired by the techniques of their influencing artist.

Janelle Dennis, Head Teacher CAPA

7VA7 Photograms Over the last two weeks students in 7VA7 have been creating an animal inspired negative with ink to produce a photogram in the darkroom . On Wednesday, they were able to go through the process of developing their photogram. The students thoroughly enjoyed the experience of working in a different learning environment.

CATCHING UP ON PASS

Last week, Year 10 students studying pass (Physical Activity & Sports Studies) participated in an NRL coaching session run by NRL NSW.

The NRL coach ran students through critical aspects surrounding the role of being a coach which will prove very helpful for them later this term, when they create and run their own coaching session for classes in Years 7 and 8. The session will be an important practical component of their coaching unit.

Alyce Smith, PASS Teacher

DUMPLING MAKING LESSONS

Ni hao! (Hello!)

Last week, Years 8 and 9 Chinese classes had a special lesson to train them on how to become master dumpling chefs. During the session, students learned different ways of wrapping dumplings and created their own special ways to fold the dumplings into various shapes, such as triangles, roses, stars and rectangles.

Students mastered the skills of making awesome dumplings and are ready to become professionals! The best chefs got a chance to be hired by Ms Li’s and Mr Thai’s Good Dumpling Restaurants.
