    DESCRIPTION OF JUDGING METHODS

This judging method is the traditional system whereby all exhibits of the same lot number are presented simultaneously tthe judge. The judge evaluates each exhibit but is permitted to give a maximum 25% ribbons within each group (blue, rewhite and pink.) Exhibitors do not need to be present for this type of judging.

All exhibits within a lot number are presented simultaneously, evaluated and awarded ribbons as in Danish judging, but texhibitor or their representative must be available to present the exhibit. The judge asks questions pertaining to the exhiband awards ribbons accordingly, without regard to Danish system percentages.

This type of judging allows for more flexibility on the part of the judge and the exhibitor. Exhibitors bring all their exhibin that department to be judged at one time and talks to the judge about the exhibits. Exhibits are not compared with otexhibits in the same lot number, but judged on their own merit. The judge may award the ribbon and premium which heshe believes is appropriate without regard to Danish system percentages.

    ADDITIONAL INFORMATION ON FACE-TO-FACE/CONFERENCE JUDGING

What if an exhibitor can't be present at their face-to-face or conference judging?Exhibitors who cannot be present for their judging must contact the department superintendent ahead of time. Ipreferred that another exhibitor sit in for that person's discussion with the judge; however, a leader or parent mayin if necessary. There is no automatic penalty for exhibitors who are not present for their judging. It is up to eacjudge to determine how the exhibitor's absence will affect the placing awarded.

What happens to the exhibits after they are judged? All exhibits remain at the fair after pre-fair judging so the department displays can be prepared prior to the first dof the fair.

When are State Fair and Merit Award selections made?During pre-fair judging, judges will set aside some of the blue ribbon exhibits for further consideration. After alexhibits have been judged, the judges will select the State Fair and Merit Awards from those exhibits that have bset aside.

    FACE-TO-FACE JUDGING SCHEDULE

    2010 ROCK COUNTY 4-H FAIR

GENERAL QUESTIONS YOU MAY BE ASKED

    DURING FACE-TO-FACE JUDGING

What do you like most about this project?

What do you like least about this project?

What have you learned in this project?

What would you like to learn more about in this project?

Where did you get the idea for this exhibit?

Where/how did you learn to make this exhibit? Who helped you?

What was the easiest part of making this exhibit?

What was the most difficult or challenging part of making this exhibit?

What would you do differently if you were to make a similar exhibit again?

The Child Development Department lists specific information the exhibitor will need to know about his/her exhibit. If you are exhibiting in thisdepartment, check page 70 of the Fair Premium Book for this information.

OTHER FACE-TO-FACE JUDGING TIPS FOR EXHIBITORS

When talking with the judge, sit up straight and speak with confidence. You are talking about yourself and your exhibit, so you should knowyour stuff!

Look the judge in the eye when talking with him/her. Eye contact is a very important part of effective communication.

If you don't know the answer to a judge's question, it's better to admit it than to make up an answer.

Face-to-face judging is meant to be an educational experience, so don't be afraid to ask the judge some questions about the exhibit or project ifyou want to.

Be courteous and polite at all times. At the end of your discussion with the judge, be sure to thank him/her for their comments.
