However, sometimes it appears that many of the individuals I read about worked really hard to make the Christian life as joyless as possible. For example, John Wesley, did not approve much of “merriment”; he once complained that conversations with George Whitfield were “often mixed with needless laughter.” In The Varieties of Religious Experience, William James talks about a French priest who decided that in order to be “holy” he must never smell a flower, never drink when thirsty, never shoo away a fly, never show disgust before a nauseating object, never complain about his personal comfort, never sit down, and never lean on his elbows when kneeling. Can you imagine equating this with holiness? “I can prove I’m holy...look at the flies all around me.” I would love to see how he handled serving in the nursery; if he could hide his disgust when confronted with a dirty diaper then he is truly more holy than I am! St. Bernard used to cover his eyes in order to avoid the beauty of Swiss Lakes because he believed a true believer would be tempted to sin through joy or pleasure. St. John of the Cross told Christians to “mortify all joy and turn not to what pleases, but to what disgusts and to despise yourself and wish that others despise you.” H.L. Mencken described a Puritan as a person with a haunting fear that someone somewhere was happy. What is so sad is that these truly devoted people missed the joy in life that comes from a relationship with God through Jesus Christ. William James wrote about the priest too pious to smell a flower, but Paul tells us in Romans 1:20 that it is through His creation that we learn so much about our God. John Wesley rebuked pastors for being too willing to “break into jest”, but Solomon, the wisest man to walk this earth, said, “A joyful heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22) and “A glad heart makes a cheerful face” (Proverbs 15:13). Not only did Jesus tell us that He wanted us to enjoy life, but He told us how in John 15: 9-11 “As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in His love, I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete”(NIV). Joy in this life comes from obeying God’s will, God’s ways, and God’s Word through our relationship with Jesus and daily submission to the Holy Spirit. When we live in a close relationship with God, joy is more than an expectation; it is a reality. Are you enjoying life? Are you basking in the beauty of God’s creation and bursting into laughter with friends? If not, take time today to pursue your relationship with Christ and let your joy be complete! For His Glory,

The

Messenger

I love reading about the “heroes of faith” who stayed focused on God’s

kingdom and trusted Him in difficult situations. However, sometimes it appears

that many of the individuals I read about worked really hard to make the Christian

life as joyless as possible. For example, John Wesley, did not approve much of

“merriment”; he once complained that conversations with George Whitfield were

“often mixed with needless laughter.” In The Varieties of Religious Experience,

William James talks about a French priest who decided that in order to be “holy”

he must never smell a flower, never drink when thirsty, never shoo away a fly,

never show disgust before a nauseating object, never complain about his personal

comfort, never sit down, and never lean on his elbows when kneeling. Can you imagine equating this with

holiness? “I can prove I’m holy...look at the flies all around me.” I would love to see how he handled serving

in the nursery; if he could hide his disgust when confronted with a dirty diaper then he is truly more holy than I

am!

St. Bernard used to cover his eyes in order to avoid the beauty of Swiss Lakes because he believed a

true believer would be tempted to sin through joy or pleasure. St. John of the Cross told Christians to “mortify

all joy and turn not to what pleases, but to what disgusts and to despise yourself and wish that others despise

you.” H.L. Mencken described a Puritan as a person with a haunting fear that someone somewhere was happy.

What is so sad is that these truly devoted people missed the joy in life that comes from a relationship

with God through Jesus Christ. William James wrote about the priest too pious to smell a flower, but Paul tells

us in Romans 1:20 that it is through His creation that we learn so much about our God. John Wesley rebuked

pastors for being too willing to “break into jest”, but Solomon, the wisest man to walk this earth, said, “A joyful

heart is good medicine” (Proverbs 17:22) and “A glad heart makes a cheerful face” (Proverbs 15:13).

Not only did Jesus tell us that He wanted us to enjoy life, but He told us how in John 15: 9-11 “As the

Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Now remain in my love. If you keep my commands, you will remain

in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commands and remain in His love, I have told you this so that my joy

may be in you and that your joy may be complete”(NIV). Joy in this life comes from obeying God’s will, God’s

ways, and God’s Word through our relationship with Jesus and daily submission to the Holy Spirit. When we

live in a close relationship with God, joy is more than an expectation; it is a reality.

Are you enjoying life? Are you basking in the beauty of God’s creation and bursting into laughter with

friends? If not, take time today to pursue your relationship with Christ and let your joy be complete!

For His Glory,

Get A Fruitilicious Life and Feel Fantastic

“The fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace,

long-suffering, kindness, goodness, faithfulness,

gentleness, self-control.”

Galatians 5: 22-23

Eating healthy is something that is becoming more

important to people and fruit is one of the best foods

you can eat. Fruits are low in calories and carbs and

full of vitamins that are fruitiliciously yummy!

Likewise the nine “fruits of the Spirit” are so

important for Christians to maintain a healthy

lifestyle and witness for our Lord. The moment you

became a Christian the Holy Spirit began a divine

work to produce Christ’s character in you. This is as

natural as the growth of fruit on a tree. How quickly

fruit is evident in our lives depends on how

completely we yield ourselves to the

Holy spirit’s activity.

How Healthy is your physical life but even more

important how healthy is your spiritual life?

“God of Our Fathers” is a great hymn that we sing often around July 4th, Independence Day.

This hymn was written by Daniel Roberts, Pastor of a small rural church in Brandon,

Vermont. He wrote it in 1876 to commemorate the 100th birthday of the Declaration of

Independence. It was sung for the first time at Brandon’s July 4th Celebration. The people

enjoyed it, so Roberts submitted it to the committee planning the Constitutions Centennial Celebration. “God of Our Fathers” was chosen

as the official hymn for the celebration and a New York City organist composed a new tune

with the trumpet fanfare that we sing today. So this Pastor who called himself “a country parson,

known only within my own small world” has spoken to people for over 100 years

through the words God gave him!

“Thy love divine hath led us in the past; In this free land by thee our lot is cast;

Be thou our ruler, guardian, guide and stay; Thy Word our law, Thy paths our chosen way.”

MINISTER of STUDENTS THE SILENT TREATMENT

“But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well.”

Matthew 6:33

Normally, you don't want to be on the receiving end of “the silent treatment”...its a punishment. But God has a different spin on the silent treatment. When we

set aside time to seek God and listen to Him, its more like a spa treatment. I can think of a million things I need to be working on: the next ministry

calendar, youth worship services, lesson prep, mailers, mission events and a never ending stream of announcements. These are not only important tasks, but the list of them grows faster than a zit on prom day. Our only hope is to start each day in silence, or make sure we take time each day just for qui-

et...just as your doing right now. You can do anything during your silent time, except for non-silent things. The point is to still your soul and listen

for the voice of God.
