July 9, 2017 10:00 a.m. Worship
No matter who you are, No matter where you are On life’s journey, You are welcome here.
Worship begins with chimes. Please silence cell phones.
Bibles for use during worship are available at each entrance to the Sanctuary. THOUGHT FOR PREPARATION “We can neither deceive God nor impose something on him. We can only slowly forget God.” ~Dorothy Soelle PRELUDE In My Solitude Duke Ellington
Gospel Trio CHIMES WELCOME Sarah Garcia * WELCOMING EACH OTHER One: O God, be among us now! Come to us and shape us, All: Extinguish our anxiety, despair and vanity! One: Leave us with nothing but your greatness, your goodness, your mercy! All: Give us these things in this hour and in every moment of our lives!
* HYMN Be Thou My Vision Red Hymnal, No. 288 Be thou my vision, O Lord of my heart;
nought be all else to me save that thou art. Thou my best thought by day or by night, Waking or sleeping, thy presence my light
Be thou my wisdom, and thou my true word; I ever with thee and thou with me, Lord; Mother and Father, you are both to me, Now and forever your child I will be
*Please stand if you are able to do so
Riches I need not, nor life’s empty praise Thou mine inheritance, now and always: Thou and thou only, Zirst in my heart, High King of heaven, my treasure thou art.
High King of heaven, my victory won, May I reach heav’n’s joys, O bright heaven’s Sun! Heart of my own heart, whatever befall, Still be my vision, O Ruler of all.
PRAYER OF CONFESSION Matt Fitzgerald Most merciful God,
We confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have said “yes” to and by what we have rejected. We have not let you be our vision; We love riches and empty praise. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. Have mercy on us and forgive us; So that we might say “yes” to you, delight in your will and walk in your ways. Amen.
MOMENT OF SILENT PRAYER WORDS OF ASSURANCE RESPONSE Red Hymnal No 33, v. 1
What a friend we have in Jesus, all our sins and grief to bear! What a privilege to carry everything to God in prayer! Oh, what peace we often forfeit, oh, what needless pain we bear, All because we do not carry everything to God in prayer.
THE BIBLICAL WORD FOR THIS DAY Carrie Bruggers Matthew 5:37 (NRSV)
Let your word be ‘Yes, Yes’ or ‘No, No’; anything more than this comes from the evil one.
Revelation 3:15-‐20 (NRSV)
“I know your works. You are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either cold or hot.
So, because you are lukewarm, and neither cold nor hot, I am about to spit you out of my mouth. For you say, ‘I am rich, I have prospered, and I need nothing.’ You do not realize that you are wretched, pitiable, poor, blind, and naked. Therefore I counsel you to buy from me gold reZined by Zire so that you may be rich; and white robes to clothe you and to keep the shame of your nakedness from being seen; and salve to anoint your eyes so that you may see. I reprove and discipline those whom I love. Be earnest, therefore, and repent. Listen! I am standing at the door, knocking; if you hear my voice and open the door, I will come in to you and eat with you, and you with me.”
* A STATEMENT OF FAITH We believe in God who has created and is creating, who has come to us in Jesus Christ to reconcile and make us new, who works in us and others by the Holy Spirit. We trust God. God calls us to be the Church, to celebrate God’s presence, to love and serve others, to care for creation, to seek justice and to resist evil, to proclaim Jesus, cruciKied and risen, our judge and our hope. In life and death, in life beyond death, God is with us. We are not alone. Thanks be to God!
(adapted from the United Church of Canada) * RESPONSE Black Hymnal No. 506, v. 2-‐3
Have we trials and temptations? Is there trouble anywhere? We should never be discouraged; take it to our God in prayer! Can we Zind a friend so faithful, who will all our sorrows share? Jesus knows our every weakness; take it to our God in prayer!
Are we weak and heavy laden, burdened with a load of care? Precious Savior, still our refuge, take it to our God in prayer! Do your friends despise, forsake you? Take it to our God in prayer! Jesus’ arms will take and shield you; you will Zind a solace there.
SERMON "Saying Yes and Saying No” Matt Fitzgerald
*Hymn You Have Searched Me Lord, and Known Me Tune: Nettleton
You have searched me, Lord, and known me! All my life is in your care. When I lie awake in evening, You are always with me there. When I rise to greet the morning in an attitude of praise, What I learn from you is humbling: you already know my ways. Lord, you know the song I'm singing and my words before I pray. You're behind me and before me as I travel through each day. You once knit me all together; You created me by grace. In your eyes, you see and love me as you treasure all my days. Lord, I try to learn your wisdom, but I cannot understand. Yet your love is all around me; I am part of all you've planned. Let me sing your praise each morning, let me serve you all day through, And in evening, make me peaceful knowing this: I'm loved by you!
OFFERTORY As Steals The Morn Upon The Night G.F. Handel
from L’Allegro, il Peneroso, ed il Moderato Elisse Albian and Kurt R. Hansen, soloists
Karina Kontorovitch, piano
As steals the morn upon the night And melts the shades away:
So Truth does Fancy's charm dissolve And rising Reason puts to Zlight
The fumes that did the mind involve Restoring intellectual day.
* FESTIVAL DOXOLOGY
Praise God from Whom all blessings Zlow, Praise God all creatures here below, Alleluia, Alleluia! Praise God above, ye heavenly host, Creator, Christ and Holy Ghost. Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia! Alleluia, Alleluia! Amen!
PRAYER OF THE CHURCH Sarah Garcia
THE LORD’S PRAYER Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name. Thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory forever. Amen.
* HYMN How Firm a Foundation Black Hymnal, No. 407
How Zirm a foundation for you has been laid, By God in the Word, in the sacriZice paid! What more can God say than to you has been said, To you who for refuge to Jesus have Zled? “Fear not I am with you, oh, be not dismayed, For I am your God I will still give you aid; I’ll strengthen you, help you, and cause you to stand Upheld by my righteous, omnipotent hand. When through the deep waters I call you to go, The rivers of woe shall not over you Zlow; For I will be with you, your troubles to bless, Delivering you from your deepest distress. The soul that on Jesus has leaned for repose, I will not, I will not desert to its foes; That soul though all hell should endeavor to shake, I’ll never, no never, no never forsake!”

ABOUT ST. PAULS Making a joyful sound in the city
Saint Pauls UCC has a vibrant history in the city of Chicago. Founded in October 1843, we are one of the city's oldest churches. In 1989 we became one of America's first congregations to
declare ourselves "Open to and Affirming of” LGBT women and men. From founding Chicago's largest provider of social services to at-risk children to starting a home for the elderly, from housing protestors at the 1968 Democratic Convention to hosting Lincoln Park's first MLK day march against violence on Chicago's streets we are proud to make a joyful
sound in the city. Most importantly, over the past 173 years we are glad to have introduced thousands of children and adults to the amazing, inclusive, life changing, uplifting love of God. We do so in worship
that is traditional, but far from conventional.
