Leadership Training
Conference 2015!
Do you love Key Club? Well, you must, because you’ve read this far! Well, what is a
better way to show off your love for Key Club than to attend a Training Conference
with people from all over New York State? Whether your favorite thing to do is meet
new people, share your ideas, come up with new service projects, or learn how to be
a better officer, all these things are offered at the 67th Annual Leadership Training
Conference. The 2015, LTC will be held at the Desmond Hotel in Albany, N.Y.,
from March 27th to March 29th. Our theme will be
Espionage/ Spies! Come be an agent of service with
us!
ICON or International Convention was located in Anaheim California
for 2014. Though it’s too late to attend this year’s ICON because it ended
almost a month ago, it’s never to early to consider going to ICON for 2015.
ICON is like Leadership Training Conference but SO much larger. ICON is
every club in the United States! ICON isn't just for the New York District
Board, it’s for ANYONE. Any member, officer, or advisor can attend ICON.
You get the opportunity to go somewhere that you’ve never been, and
meet people that you’ve never met before, from EVERYWHERE! ICON 2015
will be held in Indianapolis, Indiana for the 100th anniversary of Kiwanis!
Icon 2014 was my first experience at Icon and in California,
so you can only imagine my surprise when I arrived at the
Hotel in Anaheim to see all these people. All these people
here for Key Club!? I was speechless, and if you know me,
that barely happens. Imagine walking into a hotel and see-
ing this; hundreds of people, all different, all unique, all their
own person, but they’re all alike in one way; their way of life;
caring. I mean, that’s what brought me 2,774 miles away
from home. I can’t explain what Icon meant to me. I made
friendships that will last a lifetime. I met people who changed
my perspective on life. I witnessed random acts of kindness,
and I watched as our own past LTG, Laken Kelly was elected
Well, I’ve told you about my experience at ICON 2014, now let me
introduce you to someone brand new to the New York District!
Meet Shane Meyers from the mighty mighty Florida District. Shane
was elected International Trustee during ICON 2014. The New York Dis-
trict Board was recently informed that we would have the honor of hav-
ing Shane as our International Trustee. Shane will also oversee our sister
districts; the Illinois—Eastern Iowa District, and the Bahamas District!
Wish Shane luck for a successful service year!
Shane’s goals include
reducing the cost of future
ICON’s, preventing future
dues increases, and
improving communication
by holding conference calls
with district board members
as well as selected
presidents.
And remember,
“No Shane,
No gain.”
St. Jude Research Hospital is
one of the world’s premier
pediatric cancer
research centers. The goal
of St. Jude’s is to find a cure
for children with cancer and
other devastating diseases.
They plan to reach this goal
through research and
treatment.
Make — A — Wish Foundation is
an organization that believes that
one simple wish can change the
game for a child who has a life —
threatening medical condition. Make
— A — Wish is inspired to be crea-
tive in exceeding the expectations
of every child’s wish. Make — A –
Wish grants a child’s wish on an av-
erage, every 38 minutes. The foun-
dation serves to change the lives of
children in the United States.
The two district projects for the 2014– 2015 Service Year
are Make – A — Wish Foundation and St. Jude Children’s Re-
search Hospital. For this upcoming service year, the New York
District is pushing to spend more hours, and raise more money
for these two great projects. The goal for the service year is
65,000 hours of service, and $75,000 to donate. Each and
every club, and individual Key Clubber must put forward all the
time they can to help not only reach these goals, but go beyond
the expectations of the New York District. So, Division 24,
please make sure that you’re filling out your
Monthly Report Forms on the 7th of EVERY
month so that we can reach our goal!
The goal of the Eliminate Project is to eliminate Maternal and Neo-
natal Tetanus. Almost 60,000 newborn babies die every year from
this disease, and the mothers are at risk to pass away also. Newborns
suffer repeated and extremely painful convulsions and are sensitive
to light and to touch. The goal of this projects is to have Maternal
and Neonatal Tetanus completely eliminated by 2015. To reach this
goal we need to vaccinate about 129 million mothers and future
babies. $110 million will support the vaccines, syringes, safe storage,
transportation, and the skilled staff to help eliminate this disease. But,
we need more than money. We need the help of every dedicated
member of every Kiwanis, Key club, Builders club, and UNICEF.
Kiwanis and UNICEF in earlier years tackled iodine deficiency
disorders and achieved one of the most public health successes of
the twentieth century. Now, together, they plan to eliminate MNT
from the face of the Earth. This will help the poorest, and most ne-
glected mothers and their babies received healthcare.
The end of MNT is the beginning to a new generation of happy
and healthy mothers, and babies.
We have raised a total of $54,254,232.21, and Key Club alone
has raised $2,432,905.64! That is outstanding, and I could not be
more proud of the work we’ve all done as a team! The Eliminate Pro-
ject Committee has set a goal of $25,000 for the New York District
Key Club and so far we have raised $3,549.00! So, keep up all the
good work, and be proud to be part of such a hardworking District!
