Disciples Women Monthly Gathering Groups

Monday Evening Young Women’s Group will meet on Monday, July 2, at 6:30 pm at Newk’s @ Central Texas Marketplace. Please email [email protected] for more information.

Monday/Tuesday Evening Group-Please contact Jean Powell or Michele Ryan for details.

Thursday Daytime Group will not be meeting in July or August, but will resume in September.

Disciples Women Leadership Team Meeting The next meeting of the Leadership Team will be on Wednesday, August 1, at 5:30 pm in the CCC Library.

Disciples Women Road Trip! “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” (Matthew 11:28)

Remember the fun of road trips? Isn’t it freeing to get into the car and drive, especially if you’re with friends and sharing about your lives in the process?

The Disciples Women are taking an overnight trip to Austin (Cedar Park/Round Rock) to the Beth Moore Living Proof Live event on Friday & Saturday, July 13 & 14, at the Cedar Park Center. Beth Moore’s life-transforming Bible study will challenge and inspire each of us. As Beth explores the Bible and how it applies to real life, each of us will be amazed by her own experiences as a believer, and be inspired to magnify and strengthen our own relationships with God.

The event will be from 7:00 – 9:00 pm on Friday, July 13, and from 8:30 – Noon on Saturday, July 14.

We will need to leave the church on Friday, July 13, around 1:00 pm so that we can get checked into our hotel and grab some dinner before the event begins at 7:00 pm.

The cost for the event is $65.00 per person. There are several hotels in the Cedar Park/Round Rock area that we can stay at Friday night for around $100.00 that include free breakfast. If we sleep 4 to a room, that’s only about $25 - $30 per person! After the event is over Saturday at Noon, we can grab some lunch and head to IKEA or the Round Rock Outlet Mall for some serious retail therapy. We will return to the church parking lot around 6:00 pm with renewed minds and refreshed spirits!

Reservations for the event and for hotel rooms need to be made by June 8. If you plan to attend, please contact Michele Ryan at [email protected] or 715-7633

A word of thanks to those of you who have provided the Mallory family with a meal. The response from our church family has been heart warming. The July sign-up calendar should be available online by the time you receive this newsletter. Please let me know if I can help you. (Carol Walker, 772-7372, [email protected])

We had another "poster" birthday card for another lively 100 year old lady, Henrietta Slavik (Tom Slavik's mother). Neither Virginia Lee Stratton (104) or Henrietta Slavik (100) act or look their age. They

both are amazing!

Richard has an informative insert in the church bulleting which gives more information about those on the Care Line.

In case you wondered, Betsy Tracy sends the cards to us when we go through life's ups and downs. Helen Goddard and Eileen Conover regularly visit our members in retirement homes. They would love to have you join them.

FOCUS and Sunday School in July On Sunday Morning and Wednesday nights, we’ll be looking at some of the most interesting, fun, and sometimes weird stories of the Bible as we go through the story of Joseph and also look at the book of Judges.

Young Adult Disciples Ministry—A New Beginning! _______________________________ Sunday, July 29, after worship

There have been several young adults coming to church lately and several of you have been asking about what we’re going to do to start up a new young adult ministry! It’s time to make things happen for those of you in the 18-28 age range! We especially want this to ministry to be a place where some of our “younger” young adults feel welcome! Please join us for a kick-off lunch after church on Sunday, July 29, at Chuy’s on Hwy 6, as we dream about new things to come!

During our mission trip to Bastrop, Texas, the youth worked in the recovery process after last year’s fire. We worked for and with several families as they tried to sift through the destruction and rebuild.

On Monday we worked with a woman named Robin. All that was on her lot was debris and a slab of concrete where her house once stood. We helped her clear out weeds and other unwanted plants that were beginning to come back around her garden. We also picked up and cleared glass still mixed in with the dirt from the fire. Robin told Brenda, the director of Bastrop Recovery Center, that it would have taken her weeks to do the work that we did for her. Robin had lived in her home for 25 years, and was contemplating not rebuilding. Her connection to her home was too great and she was scheduled to break ground on Thursday June 7th.

On Tuesday and Thursday we worked with a couple named Linda Lu and Dan. They had settled in Bastrop after losing their home in New Orleans to hurricane Katrina. When Dan heard about the fire Linda Lu was at work. So, to find out more he took his keys and his wallet and drove to the corner store. When they told him how big the fire was and that he needed to leave the police had already blocked off his neighborhood and wouldn’t let him go back. They didn’t have the chance to think of what they wanted to save. As a result they lost computers with all of Linda Lu’s writing and poetry. They also lost more than $100,000 worth of inven-tory in collectibles, antiques, and art that they had found and bought over their lifetime and were going to sell off gradually as their retirement. They had just recently moved all of that stuff from storage containers around the country to their house a few months before. It was the first time it had all been in one place. We helped them clear many of the dead trees on their lot that needed to come down and were at risk of causing more damage.

On Wednesday we worked with a wonderful man named Mike. Mike didn’t know about the fire until his house had caught on fire. At that point he rushed out of the house and tried to drive away but the roads were covered. He ended up walking through miles of burning forest with his dog in his hands to Smithville. Since then his dog has died of natural causes and he has bought another beautiful dog named Saisei, which is Japa-nese for rebirth. He had already built himself a beautiful home on the plot that he had lived on for over 23 years but there was still much debris and metal all over the place. We helped him clear as much as we could off of his land in order for his house to look like a home again.

On our last day we worked for a woman named Barbara Bobbit. When the fire came she had seen the ash and soot from a distance and didn’t think anything of it. Later someone knocked on her door and told her she had to leave because the fire was so big. She had to drive for hours around the fire to get back into Bastrop to Wal-mart where her husband was working. They were standing in the parking lot for hours trying to figure out what to do next and whether they needed to drive down to find a place in Austin since all of the hotels were filled up. That’s when a family drove up and asked them if they were alright and offered them a place to stay. The family said that God had told them to drive around and look for people who needed help. The family let Barbara and her husband stay with them for two weeks until they could get on their feet. When they returned to their lot all that was left was a warped metal roof lying on top of ashes. Since then they have rebuilt. We sifted through the dirt and ground all around their house picking out the glass and metal that was still there.

It was hot, hard work, but we got to meet some great people and help them rebuild their homes and lives after the tragedy they endured. Don’t worry though, through camping, swimming, baseball with a tennis ball and pine limb, and other things, we still had plenty of fun, too.

Dear Families, Things are sure sunny here on the ark! We are super excited to have 106 kiddos on board this session. With lots of exciting things on the calendar, it’s sure to be a memorable summer!

On June 14, the entire school took to the course with bikes, trikes, strollers, push toys, and scooters to raise money for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. There was a special guest appearance by Officer Leach with the Waco Police Dept. who brought a special robot to teach us about bike safety. Not only will the proceeds from our Trike-a-Thon benefit a very special pediatric hospital, but it helps teach a wonderful lesson to our kiddos that one is never too little to make a great big difference!

The Kona Ice truck will be in our parking lot every Thursday afternoon at 2:00. It’s a great opportunity to share a cool treat with your little one at pick-up time. Part of your purchase returns to our school. Even cooler!

We will be closed in honor of Independence Day, July 4.

We continue to pack the roster for Fall! With some classrooms at maximum ratio, please hurry in to make sure your family sets sail with us for our next school year adventure!

Dear Friends at Central Christian Church, Thank you very much for your recent gift to the Family Abuse Center. Your help keeps the shelter open, rooms cool and food on the table. We could not keep the emergency shelter open without your help. Kathy Reid, Executive Director

Carmen wrote this beautiful children's book to help raise awareness about the acceptance of children with special needs. It is her hope that someday ALL children will be loved and accepted for who they are and not what they look like. I would encourage all of you who work with children or are parents to purchase this book, to share this link with others, and to help teach young children that while we all may look a little different than one another, we are the same inside and are ALL beautifully and wonderfully made.

I can see families sitting down to read this book together, to look at the pictures, to allow their children to ask curious questions, and for the children and parents to truly take a closer look...to see that ALL children have love and joy to share with one another regardless of varying abilities or disabilities. Teachers can use it in classrooms. Churches can use it in children's church. It's a great, easy to understand resource to start the conversation with young children about acceptance and love.
