husband, Dr. Kevin Wehrly, her two sons, Henry and Gus, and a veritable menagerie of lovable animals. Kristen will have plants for sale at our meeting.

Upcoming Programs

In August we continue with Glen Decker of Piping Rock Orchids who will speak about Paphiopedilums, and will bring plants to sell, and in November one of our favorites, Alan Koch of Gold Country Orchids is back. You can’t be at one of Alan’s talks and not learn something unless you sleep through every minute of it, and Alan will also have plants for sale.

Great Scott!

June 11th we made a road trip to Kansas City for the Orchid Society of Greater Kansas City (hereafter referred to as OSGKC) monthly meeting. Leon Glicenstein was their speaker and we really enjoy his presentations. Leon was one of the three partners in Hoosier Orchid Company before they closed. We’ve heard him speak several times including at the 19th World Orchid Conference in Miami in 2008. That presentation was about jewel orchids and he knew that people would want those plants after the presentation and had arranged for a tissue culture lab to ship plants for sale directly to Miami! This time we heard a presentation titled “Glicenstein’s Monsters” which included many of the crosses that Leon has made over his long career. According to OrchidWiz there may be close to 300 crosses made by Leon with some of those listed when he was with Hoosier. Many of the crosses have fun names like “Spiranthes Awful” and it is worth your time to peruse the names when you can. Leon shared the good, the bad, and the ugly as he talked about some reasons he tried crosses and which of his turned out particularly well. I noticed toward the end of his presentation that he mentioned a cross, Angraecum scottianum x Jumellea comorensis, that he did not have a photo of for his presentation. I had noticed before the trip that we had an Angraecum cross in bud and thought it might be Leon’s cross. I confirmed when we got home that we did indeed have Angellea Great Scott! We were able to send some photos to Leon for inclusion in his next “Glicenstein’s Monsters” presentation. As a plus the meeting was held at Bird’s Botanicals in the “Bat Cave” and so included some shopping. Every orchideer and/or tropical plant grower should visit “The Cave” if they are in Kansas City. Steve’s Musings!

Heat can be a problem in a greenhouse on clear sunny days even in winter, and as we move into the hottest part of summer shade and ventilation are the watchwords. At least we’ve continued to get rain into July – it raises the humidity and the cloud cover helps. Those of you who have lived in NW Arkansas for very long can remember summers with no rain from mid-June until Labor Day! With no shows until fall, naturally we’re seeing some interesting things flowering. I mentioned Cynorkis and Habenaria last month, and they continue to come into flower, including that attractive “weed”, Cynorkis fastigiata. Many of Cathy’s small Phalaenopsis and allied species are flowering, too, and we’re learning things we didn’t know about them. We had no idea, for instance, that Chroniochilus virescens smelled so wonderfully nor that a single half-inch flower could be detected from anywhere in the greenhouse. We’re attempting more pollinations this summer; we’ve always had an interest in propagating less common species, but after hearing Leon Glicenstien speak in Kansas City last month (see Cathy’s report elsewhere in the newsletter), we have renewed interest in trying some unusual intergeneric crosses, too. Time to order a lab coat from the Mad Scientist Couture line, I guess. Steve
