A grand event for Australian numismatics, held at Box Hill Town Hall from the 26th to the 28th of May, Downies Australian Coin Auctions Sale 319 was an outstanding success.

Comprising more than 4,000 lots, and therefore ranking as one of our largest ever auctions, Sale 319 was highlighted by dual catalogues. The main part of the sale encompassed a typically diverse array of material, with a spectacular variety of items from numismatics and other collectable fields consigned from all over the globe. Interest from all quarters was naturally substantial.

Bringing together the two giants of Australian numismatics, with Downies established more than 80 years ago, and the Royal Australian Mint celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2015, Sale 319 was also highlighted by the RAM’s Master Collection. A feather in the cap for our auction department, this unprecedented assemblage of ‘production standard master’ coins

created huge interest, and the results were predictably strong. Indeed, every lot was snapped up by eager collectors, with many selling way above estimate.

Sale 319 saw more than a million dollars worth of material go under the hammer, and the overall clearance rate was over 86%. Yet, never happy to rest on our laurels, preparations for our next auction are already well underway.

Silver Denarius of Julius Caesar (47-44BC) A great military commander, and among the

most famous names in history.

Silver Denarius of Augustus (31BC-14AD) The first ruler of the Roman Empire, and the

paradigm for the ‘good’ Roman Emperor.

Bronze As of Claudius (41-54AD) Claudius oversaw the invasion of Britain,

before being poisoned at his wife’s behest.

Silver Denarius of Nero (54-68AD) Perhaps the most infamous Roman ruler, notorious for

his excesses, and his persecution of the Christians.

Silver Denarius of Galba (68-69AD) Declared Emperor in June 68, Galba was murdered

in January 69 after a conspiracy led by Otho.

Silver Denarius of Otho (69AD) Reigning for only 3 months, Otho killed himself

rather than plunge the Empire into ruinous civil wars.

Silver Denarius of Domitian (81-96AD) Mad, bad & dangerous to know, Titus’ brother ruled

with terror until assassinated at the age of 35.

Silver Denarius of Titus (79-81AD) Son of Vespasian, this benevolent ruler was much

loved, and his premature death caused great sorrow.

Silver Denarius of Vespasian (69-79AD) Defeating Vitellius, Vespasian created stability

after the Year of the Four Emperors.

Silver Denarius of Vitellius (69AD) A notorious glutton, Vitellius ruled for just a few

months, before overthrown by the forces of Vespasian.

Silver Denarius of Tiberius (14-37AD) A generally capable Emperor, Tiberius’ reign was

notable for the Crucifixion of Jesus Christ.

Bronze As of Caligula (37-41AD) A cruel, depraved megalomaniac, Caligula is one
